Went to Khampa on a whim with a friend and the service was fantastic. They were very attentive and answered any questions we had. My friend and split everything that we ordered such as the spicy chicken dumplings, vegetable fried rice, and the beef turnover, and they gave us another item to try and fruit to end our meal. Living in NY, I've been lucky to have gone to many Himalayan/Tibetan restaurants. What drew me to Khampa Kitchen was that it's a NYT Critic's Pick! They raved about the Khampa Poethek, which was a unique dish for us. So 12 of us trekked to Jackson Heights to satisfy our curiosity and our tummies! Menu (shared by 4): ~ Chicken Momos ($11/8pcs): Really good Momos! I would try their Pork Momos next time. ~ Chives Paoze ($15/6pcs): these were a fave for my group. Everyone made a point to say how much they liked these chives buns. So flavorful and pillowy soft! ~ Khampa Poethek w.Beef ($19): We wanted to order this with pork but it wasn't available this day; so they recommended the beef version. This was the recommended dish by the NYT Critic's Pick! This dish is unique and not often found in other Tibetan restaurants in the area. Someone in my group said it reminded him of a chicken pot pie...but Much Better! Haha It was fantastic and the highlight of our meal. Definitely eat the crust, which was so full of flavor from the fillings. ~ Spicy Beef Hot Peppers w.Tingmo ($15): this was probably the most ordinary dish that we tried tonight. Still a great dish though! Loved the spicy kick! ~ Beef Shank Trak ($19): this was a plate of chunks of grilled, marinated beef. Very flavorful! I actually put some of this beef in the Chives Paoze, and it was a great combo. ~ Chicken Chilly w.Tingmo ($14): this was a flavorful dish also but would have been better if it were spicy. The Tingmo that came with this dish was served hot and fluffy. This is a small family run business. Customer service & hospitality were good. My party of 12 sat in a private room! Himalayan breakfast set is the highlight. Aloo curry and channa were made from simple ingredients but ended up with tasty dish. Not a fan of fried thing but puri changed my mind. Will come again to try this breakfast. Aloo dum was good since i am a little sensitive to oil it was okay for me . My friend liked it though. Momo was good. Went here a few weeks ago for the 1st time, didn't really like the food as much as I wuda thought & the service cuda been better. The server was too busy, so she left us to attend to other customers while trying to explain the dishes to us. She also prolly had trouble explaining what the dishes are in English, which obviously isn't her fault. We got veggie fried rice, mushroom soup, cucumber salad, a bun, & sweet tea. The sweet tea was barely sweet. I would say it's a misnomer. It tasted like masala chai otherwise, just not as strong, a mellowed version. I wuda preferred stronger flavor, a bit sweeter as well wouldn't hurt. The cucumber salad was my fave. It's slightly spicy, comes in soy sauce, with sesame seeds on top. It reminds me of cucumber kimchi. The fried rice comes with onion, scallion, & carrot. It's either cooked in soy sauce or someone hurriedly poured soy sauce over parts of it, resulting in an inconsistent color & taste. Some of the rice was white, some brown. That did get on my nerves for some reason. I got weird pet peeves, ya feel me? Anyway, I'd appreciate properly mixing the rice after adding soy sauce to get a uniform color & taste. It was decent otherwise. The mushroom soup tastes like canned Campbells soup except the mushroom portion is generous & the bowl of soup is huge. I liked the soup. khampa poethek is bomb !! beef momos are bomb !! chowmein and shogo sip sip are a bit different from what im used to in standard chinese fare but i might prefer these versions even more !! could taste the love and careful craftsmanship behind each dish. the butter tea wasnt my thing but it tastes literally like butter and tea so i cant complain. the waitress was amazing and very patient letting us take our time ordering and the decor and music inside were beautiful. ill definitely be back. read more

I have been to a few Tibetan restaurants in Jackson Heights. The ones that I liked a lot have been Spicy Tibet and Phayul. I decided to give this place a try with some friends. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the high rating it has on Google. This place does have some positives. The place is very clean and appears to have been recently renovated. The prices are also very reasonable with most entrees going for $9.99 to $11.99. Now, on to the negatives. The food was simply not as good as we'd had at other Tibetan places. The fried beef ribs were old. The meat was hard and rubbery and was microwaved. The momos we ate were also a bit bland compared to others we'd had. We definitely won't be back. read more

Lovely venue for some Himalayan breakfast and momos! The fried bread was delicious in combination with the curry potatoes and the onions. The beef momos had a fluffy exterior; kind of like steam char siu baos or chicken baos. You can definitely taste the butter in the butter tea. It's not a very dark tea. The butter is very prominent. The breakfast also comes with some rice congee. Tastes great when you add some the other things on your plate like the momo and the curry potatoes. Absolutely loved this hole in the wall. We ordered a huge spread of beef tongue, I would highly recommend the beef tongue - incredibly tender and covered in a numbing spicy oil. I thought it went amazingly with the pickled radish and mantou. This was recommended by the waiter as well. I also really enjoyed the beef momos. They were like bigger and beefier xiao long baos. Goes really well with the spicy sauce. Servers were also really nice - explained everything we were ordering and commented on what goes well together. What a gem! We came with a group of 4 and aren't the most familiar with tibetan food, but were pleasantly surprised with all the food we tried. We ordered: -dumplings in soup (spicy, came with bok choy) -tibetan breakfast (bento-like plate with fried dough, chickpeas, potato curry, spicy veggies, and a fried egg) -cold clear noodles (these were sooo good, it came with spicy sauce/peanuts/scallion on top) We also tried "butter tea", which we've never had before but was suggested by the host. My thought on it is that it's okay, maybe i'm not used to a savory warm beverage as much so I wasn't the biggest fan. I have to say this was worth the trip...I wandered into this place after seeing crazy mass of hordes of people at the Momo Crawl. I really enjoyed the visit. The waiter approached me when I walked in and asked me if I wanted a menu. It was a huge menu with lots of different items that were traditionally Nepali/Tibetan, and it's right next to Aroma Brazilian and it's not easy to spot unless you take a good look around. He offered me a glass of water and even had squeezed a lemon into it. That was a nice touch. It was fantastic to walk in and order a couple of orders of chicken and beef momos. I loved the hot sauce. It was kind of bitter like, but spicy and mild at the same time. It was worth it. My favorite was the chicken...with all the spices and scallions and flavor poppin'. I would definitely return and try other things on the menu. There's options for a full meal (lunch and dinner). It's worth mentioning that the waiter and the people working were friendly and understanding. FYI: It is loud in here, and it's a combination between hole-in-the-wall and nice cafe, so it's not super fancy in ambience or decor. Another words, it's not the best restaurant for reading a book quietly or having a serious talk with let's say your boss. There are a couple of people who are on their cell phones on speaker, so it's like living in someone's grandmother's house with the whole family speaking at once. ***Kind of cozy, and feels oddly close knit at the same time.*** With all that stated, I still would recommend it, because those momos are so tasty and fresh. I was craving some authentic momos, (beef dumpling) so I stopped by khampa kitchen which was recommended to me by friend, I tried the beef dumpling and ordered some blood sausage which I heard were pretty good too. Anyways long story short this was the best recommendation I ever had , one of the best juicy beef dumplings , proper beef to dough ratio, blood sausage (gyuma) was also really good, with every bite there was a burst of flavor of 5 spices, pepper , ground beef. I had some doubt about this restaurant at first. I still gave a try. I ordered beef ping glass noodle, beef momo, Chilli beef to go. Beef momo was undercooked. Beef noodle was a disaster. Beef chili was just salty as hell. I couldn't chew even small piece of beef , just totally not edible. I would rather eat rubber band. I wonder what is all the good review. Foods were sucks. Khampa Kitchen came highly recommended as one of the main restaurants I should visit during the Momo Crawl. My friend and I ordered beef, chicken and vegetarian momos. The momos were juicy. My friend said the vegetarian momo was good. The chicken momo was okay. The beef momo was the best one except we both had to spit out some fat or cartilage as we were chewing it. Tsering was our waiter and was very kind and helpful. Vaccination cards and IDs were promptly checked which made me feel safer eating indoors. No outdoor seating. Khampa is a Himalayan region that's closer to Sichuan region of China, so their food is influenced by Sichuan food as well, so their food got both Sichuan and Tibet flavors. Recommendation: Khampa poethek (savory pastry stuffed with leek), Shak trak (short rib tips), cucumber salad. read more

The inside seating area is clean and new and that does set it apart from the other Nepali/Tibetan kitchens. The server was super friendly I had the butter tea (a Little more watery than the other places) but they offered a refill of regular tea for free which was very nice of them. This has become my go-to place for delicious cheap eats in the area! They have a pretty simple menu and generous portions at very affordable prices averaging around $8-$10 each dish. My husband and I always get the dumpling soup (we get the beef option) which you can order either spicy or non-spicy - but we always get spicy. The flavors are always delicious, though I've noticed that the spice level varies with each visit. A good portion of their menu is spicy food so if you're sensitive to spicy, you will have options, but they will be limited. Other dishes we've ordered include Then Thuk, Green String beans, Spicy Tofu, Aloo Dam, and their noodle dishes. All of them are great but the dumpling soup is really what keeps bringing us back. The waiters are also very nice and patient but sometimes forget to give or refill water, which is fine - don't be rude and just ask for it. I personally like the community feel of the place - you can tell there are regulars and friends of the restaurant that frequent the place and sometimes stick around for conversation but that's never gotten in the way of service if we needed something. read more

Veggie momos, sha bhakleb (like an empanada), stir fried boy choy with garlic and a little chili peppers for heat, aloo dam (spicy potato), mushroom soup, tsampa cake (roasted barley flour dessert with light syrup and ice cream on top if desired) and a fresh, made-to-order GREEN JUICE, these are some of my favorite vegetarian things at this adorable, cozy, and delicious home-cooking style Tibetan restaurant! I discovered this place a few months ago while walking around Jackson Heights neighborhood during the pandemic. While I mostly order take-out, the ambience is warm, and the staff are friendly. The head chef and co-owner is the sweetest, nicest lady, Ms. Dechen. You can feel the love in the dishes. The food is always fresh, and the establishment is clean. Indoor and outdoor dining are available. This is the place for authentic Tibetan dishes from the Kham region. For all my vegetarian friends, you'll enjoy the above dishes. There's also spicy tofu and other veggie stir fry available. For all my non-vegetarian friends, you'll have to try the plethora of options, such as the spicy hot peppers with beef, beef Khampa Poethek (like a pot pie and a Khampa signature dish), soup noodles, and paoze (like a thicker pan fried momo) served with rice porridge. The diversity of options was daunting; ultimately chose the Khampa poethek and Liang fen. The latter had a delicate jellyfish/noodle-like texture in a slightly spicy sauce along with green onions and sliced peanuts. The made-to-order meat pie took around 30-40 min and it was served with the apex sliced across for easy access, on a swiveling plate. The pie was baked beautifully, with exquisite braiding along the circumference. Its texture was not pastry-like as I had anticipated; it was bread-y, crunchy on the outside while soft inside. It lacked flavor as it more as a vehicle for the well-seasoned contents; the beef cubes were tender and easy to scoop up. The size of the pie was robust and probably meant for 2-4 individuals instead of serving as a solo mission. Having no sharp utensils, I razed the edifice by hand, alternating between spoonfuls of beef. There were also two table sauces to help accentuate the meat- one was fiery orange and another had Sichuan pepper corns in chili oil. Worth coming back to check out other items. read more

Ate dinner on Friday evening around 9.15 pm. I ordered Tingmo aka soft white dough bread and chilly beef. Tingmo looks like frozen Chinese grocery wheat dough because it's all rubbery and hard came straight from microwave and beef is chewy too nonetheless ate all with 2 Heineken. Was very hungry working all afternoon in Manhattan and took subway all the way to the Khampa kitchen. I did hear lots of bad review from people but wanted to try my self and it was awful. If they served food like this and since there is so many Tibetan restaurant in the neighborhood they will shut down in no time. read more

Khampa Kitchen is must visit if you're Queens and in the Jackson Heights area. It's a block away from the station. The restaurant has a very cozy vibe and you get a good amount of food for the price. Also want to note that they have a lot of good vegetarian options. The mushroom soup and veggie paozi are hands down my favorite. Also, their laphing is so so good! We tried this place based on a recommendation of a Tibetan monk who apparently loves this place. My goodness, their dumpling soup arrived so minimalist looking - a clear brown broth, a few islands of white dumplings and some accents of green onion - so easy to pass up, but the flavor was amazing and after one spoonful I wished I could have this soup any time I am feeling in need of solace or restoration. It was soul stirring and calming at the same time. I have no idea how they got that broth to hold so much flavor! Equally good were the momo, the Sha Bhakleb (greaseless fried/baked empanada-like hand size meat pies) and the beef blood sausage with a warming, not searing, chili sauce. Exceptional was the sliced beef tongue in a multi dimensional chili and herbal sauce that was impossible to stop dipping the bread into. Everyone in the place but me was drinking their butter tea. This is a simple room with surprising cooking and I can't wait to work through the rest of the menu -- especially the highly touted Khampa Poethek (Meat Pie) to share that takes 45 minutes or so to prepare and bake while you wait. Really impressive Tibetan restaurant, well worth seeking out. The food is outstanding-- big portions, super-fresh ingredients beautifully seasoned, and very inexpensive for such high quality cooking. The vegetable momo really stand out, with a tasty filling of finely minced tofu and vegetables, worth a trip in themselves. The interior is attractive and comfortable and the service was exceptionally kind. The owners' attention to detail like the slightly smoky tea and salty pickled daikon served with the meal further reinforce the feeling that Khampa Kitchen is an exceptional place to eat. It's only a block up Roosevelt Avenue from the 74th St/ Jackson Heights subway station, so it's very accessible. read more

This place is about a month old, but their service and food needs improvement. I gave them two stars for trying that's about it. I'll start from the beginning. The entrance and the cleanliness of the place is satisfactory. When we sat down the waitress took away my napkin and chopstick because she said it was dirty. I thought that was odd because you shouldn't have dirty napkin or chopsticks in the first place but that didn't bother me too much until she never came back with a new set. Fine I let that go since it's no big deal when I have a spare set next to me. We ordered Beef Gya Thuk, Beef momo, Beef Sha Paleh (beef patties). Every dish we ordered needed improvement. I have been to most of the other restaurants nearby and this restaurant fell short on every dish. The beef momo tasted different, an ingredient was missing just cant pin what it is though. The beef patty dough was too chewy felt like I was working out my jaws eating one. The gya thuk is even better, the noodles they used were spaghetti noodles you buy from the supermarket. If I wanted spaghetti I would have made it myself at home. Then after that when I wanted the bill it took them 5 mins or so to get it together, mind you that there's only 3 parties in the restaurant. While waiting for my bill I see that they gave the wrong dish to the wrong table and they seemed completely flustered. Like really there's only 3 parties to take care of and how do you mess that up. So then finally we got our bill and she just stands there looking at us and waiting for us to pay. That was the most awkward situation that she has created, you never just stand there and wait for the customer to pay like ever. This restaurant needs to go under some serious improvements. read more
