You won't look out of place a little dressy but you can also just saddle up to the bar for a quick bite. And quick the service is! We ordered the tapas-like plates and they not only came out super fast but they were all mad delicious. The pork jowl had a lovely tamarind sauce, the Yum Naem crispy rice was fiery in the best way, the veg dumpling was outstanding and the truffle spring rolls were sufficiently tuffley. So filling for two, left feeling totally satiated. Also ordered the Jolean gin cocktail which was delicate and deeeeelicious. Our party of four was very impressed by the food! The Som Tum Crab was acidic and tingling spicy. The Pork Rib was on the drier side for me, but everyone else enjoyed it. We also shared the Goong Garee, Massaman Brisket, and Pad Mhee Korat, all of which were on the sweeter side and very flavorful. The Pad Mhee Korat was hands down the best Thai noodles any of us had ever had. Service was a tad lacking as we had to flag down waiters to clear our plates and give us new ones. My big bro is the only friend I have who can eat as much as me. Whenever we get together the amount of food we consume is biblical. We have been trying to expand our search for good restaurants outside of our normal stomping grounds, and decided on Tong, as it has been on the Michelin guide list 4 years in a row. 4-peat is crazy. Although, what does the Michelin man really know about food? We hopped off the L-Train in Bushwick and made the short walk to Tong, through brightly painted warehouses that you can't tell if they are occupied or empty. Bushwick is so unique. We arrived ready to EAT. We sat down and deliberated over the menu for longer than I care to admit, and decided on the following: Beef tartare, Yum Naem, Oysters, Beef Pad See Ew, Crab Curry, Chicken Green Curry, Massaman Brisket, Fried Branzino, and the Fillet Branzino. A laughable amount of food. I don't know why we thought we could eat all that. When you sit down, the servers first question is "are you guys okay with spicy food?" Big bro confidently nodded his head with a look of slight disrespect on his face as if to say "do you know who I am?!" Next thing I know he's running to the bathroom to go splash some water on his face after 1 bite of the crab curry. Food can be SPICY in here so if you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. I normally only highlight one dish to try and keep these reviews short, but this food was sensational, so imma highlight a few. Our favorites were the Fried Branzino, Massaman Brisket, and the Pad See Ew. The Fried Branzino is really what will bring me back here. It will keep me up at night thinking about how good this was. It was a Friday night in Queens, and I wanted to treat my own queen to a special date over Thai. I landed on Tong because I mistakenly believed I had unfinished business with their menu after my last visit. Well, I learned that some things are best left unfinished. What was most frustrating about this meal is that none of the bites were outright bad, but the elements were unbalanced. The pork spare ribs were tasty, but too dry; the pad khee morad was flavorful, but sweet as barbecue sauce; and the sausage fried rice was good, but cold and salty. Thai food is revered for its balanced and contrasting flavors, but Tong has damaged that reverence. Unfortunately, their service does not help their case. The host did not greet us, and our server was as cold and salty as the fried rice. Granted it was a Friday and she had other tables, she only spoke maybe 10 words to us--but it wasn't even the busyness of the establishment causing her distance as she had helpers running food and drinks. She genuinely did not care about our experience. Overall, the food's not cheap, the portions are fair, but the food was just not that good. I'm sorry to say, but Tong meets 1/3 of my criteria; thus, I cannot recommend it. You won't feel ripped off, but you'll probably be disappointed. read more

After our favorite Thai restaurant in Clinton Hill recently closed, we started searching for a place that could deliver a great crab fried rice dish. We found several recommendations on Reddit for spots in Manhattan, but they didn't offer delivery to our area. Fortunately, Tong came up a few times in the threads, and we were lucky that Uber Eats would deliver from Bushwick to our place, and we are so glad they did! The crab fried rice was definitely one of the best we've had in all of NYC. It was packed with fresh crab, and the accompanying sauce took it to the next level. We also ordered the pad see ew with beef, which was very good as well. You can tell from the menu that this restaurant aims for an authentic Thai experience rather than an Americanized version. My friends and I decided to come here in a group of 8 before going out in Bushwick and WOW was I amazed. Thai food in nyc has not disappointed me but I feel like this is truly up there. We shared many apps like the steak tartare, the taro fritters and also shared mains such as the beef pad see ew, khao soi, and the fish. What actually impressed me the most were the drinks though. The whiskey based espresso cocktail was super refreshing and light. I ordered chicken green curry which was surprisingly really well priced considering the neighborhood and this restaurants Michelin Guide status! Delicious!! Everything we had at Tong was spot on. We ordered two Thai ice teas, which were a good level of sweet, veg dumplings, the drunken noodles and the crab curry. I would probably skip the dumplings as they're nothing too special, but the rest *chefs kiss* The noodles had that wok hei (smokiness/char from the wok) and it was lovely. Good flavor, good portion and came out so quickly. The crab curry really packed a punch in flavor and spice. This was so damn disappointing. Every Thai restaurant I've tried in NYC is usually so good. Yes, some are definitely better than others but overall all experiences have been good. I made a reservation for 6pm on a weeknight but arrived earlier at 5:30pm. The restaurant was pretty empty at that point. There is a Happy Hour from 5-7, Mon-Thurs. I forget the full details but cocktails are $13, beer $5, wine (?), and $11 for 1/2 dozen oysters. From Happy Hour, we ordered the Jolean and beer. The Jolean was one of the better parts of our meal. The oysters were decent but a bit salty. I would not want to pay full price for these. We also ordered the Goi (Spicy Beef Tartare) to share as an appetizer. I have never had anything so salty AND spicy at the same time. We had one bite and asked them to remake it to be less salty and when we got it the second time, it was still way too salty. To be fair, the spicy level was notated on the menu so it was expected, but it is still really really spicy. For entrees, we had the Crab Fried Rice (5/5- this + the cocktail was the best part of the whole meal by far. Decent portion and lumps of real crab meat), and the Massaman Brisket (0/5- SO bad. Never had such an inedible entree in NYC before. This curry is supposed to be SLIGHTLY sweet but in reality it was sickeningly sweet. Like American candy level sweet. I don't understand how they cooked this??? Wanted to ask for another entree, but after asking for a new Goi decided to force ourselves to eat it. Service was also strangely terrible by the male server. I literally sat right by the door/hostess stand and when we tried to get his attention on several occasions, he would just look away. Tong was a pleasant surprise that I stumbled in upon with my party of 4. The food was very good (also beware...very spicy!) and had a lot of variety. We ordered the mocktails, which were a bit too sweet, the octopus, the crispy rice with cabbage, the khao soi, fried branzino, and the massaman beef. Extra shout to the presentation of the branzino, i thought it was very cool. You can also eat the whole fish too, because its so fried. The octopus was also very tender and flavorful, definitely enjoyed this one. Lastly, we ordered the lava cake dessert which was a tad disappointing.
