If I could give ZERO stars I would. My second time coming here. I had an electronic gift card it has a barcode on it, "oh we can't scan it we have to manually enter it. I had problems with them and the electronic gift card months ago, the young lady figured it out and it went through fine. $20 gift card, had remaining balance tried to use today for some minor screws & nuts for a project. The cashier called the manager Diego up. He is dialing some number that didn't respond. I'm in there 20 plus minutes for them to try and figure it out. The gift card system they punch in I said sir the young lady did that last time it didn't work. She did a scan and entered the pin it went through. I'm getting ticked off and the young cashier dark brown or black hair starts laughing. Yup I'm out of here. The only compliment I have is for Jose he was kind and helpful. I'm I'll do formal corporate complaint later. I don't shop here usually cause they have always been over priced but the service and technology of making it simple in 2025, this ace doesn't have it. I said I'll just leave it by the register while I get the cat litter . I was told by the cashier "NO" . There were 4 or 5 employees just standing around not busy at all . Much like many of the other reviews, my recent, two experiences with this store have been horrible. While many businesses may educate their employees on how to respectfully treat a customer, this store must send their employees to "rude" school. The person beh8nd the counter began to screech " you have to leave that bag up here" there were people standing there shopping who stopped to stare at the would be thief ( me) because there was obviously a panic abroad due to the unreleased pharmacy bag. This review and rating isn't about the store per se, not the location, people, or products. It's about a bad, out-dated non-competitive return policy. I had shopped here for years and then fell victim to the policy and started shopping at the Ace at 7th Street and Missouri. Today I was in the neighborhood and needed a few things. I'm not opposed to Home Depot or even Amazon but prefer shopping locally. I went in, got what I needed - everything is fine - but I saw the archaic return policy on the receipt and remembered why I don't shop here regularly (see the attached pic). There a number of categories not returnable. If you open the product, try it or find it's the wrong item or you don't like the way it works, you are SOL! They also reserve the right to arbitrarily refuse a return. I'm not aware of any other store that does that, their competitors allow returns, and I'm afraid they're sealing their own demise. When that happens, it won't be because customers don't want to shop there but because they've made it harder to shop there than their competitors have. So - this is a BUYERS BEWARE post! As for me, I've been reminded and I'll avoid them again. Nobody wants to hand over their precious $$ and be stuck with a product that doesn't meet their needs! read more

Absolute worst experience I've had with a business. My ac went out 5 days ago. I desperately purchased a cooling fan, that did not work at all. I had made my purchase online and picked it up in store. I also decided to grab a box fan when I got there. NOWHERE is it stated that fans are non refundable, but that was their initial excuse. I was denied any sort of refund for either of my purchases, which I came back TWO days later with (after I finally got a portable ac unit). They then tried to state that I returned the items in "poor condition". Yes my items were opened and I used them for a day, to realize they were fucking useless. I'm now out $100. As if I haven't had enough stress and costs over the last week. These people are absolute shit. Zero stars isn't an option. read more

Goodness, I've been coming to this Ace Hardware location for well over ten years, but I've never found myself in quite this situation. As this is my closest neighborhood, locally owned hardware store, I've always been willing to spend an extra dollars or two per item on the $5 screw driver, the $15 toilet fill valve, door knob, paint brush, bottle of glue, mop bucket, box of screws, sheet of drywall, plank of wood, and so on. They're not the most well stocked, and sometimes it's unavoidable driving out of the way for instant access to the home repair item you require for that weekend project when Ace doesn't carry the item I want or doesn't have a decent enough selection of the product I'm looking for. It was the convenience and local economy that I was supporting with my patronage. I recently have been looking for a small-ish rolling tool chest, and found one for sale on the internet that looked like it fit my dimensions and was a decent enough price. After some searching I found this toolbox was distributed through Ace stores as well as both the other major big box hardware stores, within a $10 difference between big box and Ace, so naturally, I came in to look at the toolbox, touch it, open the drawers to make sure it was a decent enough quality for me to not hate trying to open and close doors and drawers filled with tools. They had five or six of these toolboxes available, but nothing on display with everything hidden inside the box. I found a staff member and asked if there was anything already out of the box that I could see before making a purchase and there was none. I asked what their return policy was and they do not allow returns of tools once they leave the store. I then asked if we could open a box so that I may test the drawers and doors to be sure I would be happy with the item before I purchased it as within their policy I would not be allowed to return it and they were unwilling to open a box under the justification that the toolbox would no longer be new if the box is opened and they would have to then sell it at a discount. I asked if there was someone who could make a decision to allow the box to be opened and only the store manager could make that decision and unfortunately they were unavailable to speak with. Throughout this entire discussion, the sales associate continued to tell me how high of a quality this tool brand is and that they themselves own several toolboxes and can attest to their quality and longevity. We went back and forth a few times on the topic of how they're basically forcing me into risking a purchase of something that may or may not be a good product, I was willing to purchase under the no return policy, but I wanted to touch the product to come to my own conclusion as to it's level of quality before committing hundreds of dollars on something. Ultimately I decided that the purchase wasn't worth the risk and left the store after explaining that I could touch and feel and get a sense for just about every item in their store and making decisions to purchase these items was easy, but unfortunately I would be unable to continue as a customer of theirs due to the no return policy on an item that I simply could not make an informed decision on. I ended up finding another Ace store with the tool box on display and ultimately I was happy I didn't pull the trigger on it because I would be very unhappy having spent so much money on something that was seriously lacking in quality. Sorry Ace, unfortunately after this experience, I am simply not able to continue shopping here with such an archaic view of return policies and opening a product to show and display for customers to touch and try. read more

This is by far one of my worst experiences with ACE hardware. I will not say all of them , but this particular store is the worst, they should not be allowed to run a franchise as they give the company a horrible name & representation. The manager son of the owner was horrible on his customer service talked down to people and when it was my turn for a return, he refused to even give me the time a day, receipt or no receipt he didn't even look at me, like I didn't exist, yet gave the cashier a red light to be rude herself. I didn't not know ACE hardware had a no return policy!!!??? NOT!! Just this crappy locThe item was broken when bought a crappy Industrial bucket that was broken and with a receipt yet they said NO and the reason BECAUSE I SAID SO & my father is the owner. Here it was on a Wednesday morning, and on the way home from my vision exam, I remembered I needed some items to help me out with our gardening. The closest hardware store I could think of was Walt's Ace Hardware. Now I have to mention this, even if it means that you will be scratching your head wondering about my age, and all I can tell you is don't. Back in the 70's the original Walt's Hardware, as it was called, was located on the southwest corner of 19th Ave. and Indian School Road, just the opposite corner of where it is now. This store may have been acquired by the Ace Hardware Store chain but, let me say this, the manner in the way customers are treated hasn't changed in all these years. Meaning that they have excellent employees that are customer friendly and want to always help you. I used to stop here many times after work, even after it had moved to its current location. If they don't have what want they will gladly order it for you. Sure they want your business but, let me tell you, the way they have continued to conduct their business is no different than in years past. This is how you continue to have customers by letting them know you want to help them with whatever it is you are looking for. That is how it's done. Even my wife loves to come here, just to look around, and look around she does. This time around, found me a huge hat to wear outside to shade me from the sun. To my surprise, they even carry my lawn fertilizer that is difficult to find, and at a much better price. So I will return here for this and make a special trip. Whenever you are in the neighborhood, don't forget to stop by, you never know what you will find besides what you came here for. They run this place like a casino floor and every employee is a pit boss watching your every single move waiting for some action. The old school two way mirrored surveillance loft makes you feel like you're in the black market. All the employees are wired with ear pieces and look at everyone as a threat. I bought four screws recently and a employee near me began escorting me to the front with my screws. All I had were four screws. Just for fun I sped up to lose my tail and b-lined it down a random aisle. She got on the wire and then I hear all the radios sound off -" white male black shirt coming down with 4 screws at .24 cents a piece". Wish I was joking. I still shop here because it's closer than Home Depot and I like their pens, but it's also fun giving the employees a chance to act their authority kink out. read more

I live in between two Ace Hardware store and it takes the same amount of time to go to either one. The other one is in a nicer area and shopping center, but I ALWAYS choose Walt's. It's in a more sketchy area, but the store itself is not. Everyone is alway super knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. The main lady in charge (I don't know her name) appears to run a pretty tight ship. Walt's also has waaaaay more stock on hand and more options and available items. read more

I could not believe how patient and helpful Lorraine was!! I went in with an antique table leg in my hand needing a wing nut to replace the one on it that had been destroyed by a previous owner, and the leg can not be tightened. I couldn't find one that fit...and Lorraine came to my rescue! I won't detail all she did for me, suffice to say it was WAY beyond the call of duty!! It seems the bolt part (that's an integral part of the leg itself and cannot be replaced) had some threads that were damaged. Long story longer, Lorraine spent about 20 minutes trying things that would enable the nut to be screwed onto that bolt! She refused to give up!! She used a grinder on the end of the bolt, she cleaned the threads with something, and she would not give up! ALL FOR A 45¢ WING NUT!! Walt's Ace Hardware is the BEST! read more

I would give this place zero stars if that was possible. Buyer beware! I choose Ace Hardware Stores because I like to support these independently owned franchises and USUALLY get exceptional service. I would buy many of my smaller ticket items here because they were close to home. I needed to upgrade my Stihl Chainsaw and saw they are Stihl vendors. What a mistake to buy it here! I found out the hard way that this location is notorious for poor service when it comes to large equipment purchases. I purchased a Stihl MS251 Wood Boss from them on Saturday, and so many accessories that day like files, guides, and fuel to go with my saw purchase. I had heard that the Ace corporate standard as part of their agreement with Stihl is for them to start the machine before you leave the store to ensure that you have an operational piece of equipment. The employee, Diego, was unaware of this policy and advised me that they did not start them at the store. That should have raised a bigger red flag than it did. Since I am a fan of Stihl's quality and reliable performance, I took it home anyway, topped it off with Stihl MotoMix and Stihl Platinum bar-chain oil, ready to take it for a spin. It would not start! To the point that I even wondered if it had a spark plug and I took off the top saw cap, confirmed spark plug was present and not flooded yet from all the pulls I had tried. I tried it a few more times before I checked again to see it had flooded. Followed the manual guidance to address the flood and allowed it to sit until the next morning. Sunday I called the store who offered to try to start it this time. I walked into the store to see Diego the Ace employee who sold me the saw trying to teach him self how to start the saw from the Stihl Kiosk as I arrived. I stood back and watched incompetence at work. We proceeded out front where he stared perplexed at the choke switch and I mentioned that he had to press and hold the "trigger"/throttle at the handle to "shift" the choke into position. To which he responded, "I know." He proceeded to yank and yank on the cord and flooded the saw, but didn't know how to access the spark plug to check that it was wet or flooded. He called his manager Wes on the phone to ask him what he should do. I asked for an exchange and they said no returns or exchanges and I was on my own. They gave me the number to a Rental place. I asked that their manager call me. I left my number and went to Howard's Ace Hardware on 32nd St and Indian School. The service was night and day. They had sympathy for my plight and worked with me to get it going. After involving the local Stihl mechanic, they advised me that whomever assembled the saw had made some errors that the average user would not have picked up on. The Manger from Walt's, Wes Anderson, called me early Tuesday morning ( I purchased the saw Saturday). He asked me if I was able to get the saw started and I told him that even the Stihl folks at Howard's were kindly working with me and providing me with the quality customer service I expected from Ace and Stihl. And that I had learned the was assembled incorrectly and had they started it in their own shop before I left as is standard of Ace - Stihl sales, as I had asked, that we could have avoided this. Wes became indignant and yelled, "Don't tell me how to run my business!" He also insisted that Diego said I turned down the start up service (which I did not) and that he had me on video and audio being hostile and aggressive to his employees. I replied that those comments there revealed to me that he did not have video/audio because other than being a bit stern and frustrated, I realized their incompetence and inability to provide customer service and left. He then yelled at me to never to return to his store. Don't worry I won't. Howards Ace Hardware has earned a customer for life. Walt's Ace Hardware doesn't deserve to be classified as an Ace or a vendor of the Stihl product line. I have since learned that this type of subpar "customer service" is standard for Walt's and they have become notorious in the Stihl community for it. read more

Pretty disappointing.. one of main reasons I make a point to shop at places like Ace is because of the service you get from ​real people. I showed up 7 minutes after closing, but I called them before they closed to let them know that I was on my way and it was emergency. I needed grab something real quick, but wouldn't make it until like 606pm. ​I mean, I totally get it, they're under no obligation to help someone after they close, but when you call ahead and you walk up to the door and there's four employees just sitting in there, but all they say is sorry can't help now, it's pretty frustrating. The truthful response would have been, ​not sorry, it's not that we can't help you, it's that we won't help you regardless what emergency you have. Again, they didn't have to, but I'm just not used to a Walmart level experience at Ace. For the record if you call my place a business and tell me that you have a situation that I can help with, and all that help will cost me is about 3 minutes of my time, i would stay to help, thats how small businesses compete with lower prices of the big box stores. read more

More often than not, the duplicate keys never quite match up with the original, and are a source of annoyance to get them to work. I went to ACE as no more Home Depot for me. I ordered a 10ft Werner ladder at Home Depot, paid to have it picked up, just to get a ladder that looked like it had gone through hell and with a bend bracket. I returned it with no problem from Home Depot. Therefore, I thought to try it again and I ordered another one at Home Depot a few weeks later. Same issue. The ladder looked beaten up, was dented and wobbly. Home Depot took it back with no issue but so much of my time was wasted with every purchase in trying to find someone who could pick it up and deliver to my downtown condo. Fast forward... I searched online and found the same ladder at ACE. Called the ACE store on 24th Street but, unfortunately they didn't deliver. They assured me they only sell new ladders and not to worry about getting a ladder that looks like it had been used or was defective. They referred me to the 19th Ave & Indian School store. I called and spoke with Wes, the store manager, and he assured me all will be a great experience and they would deliver the ladders (at no charge). Wes also called me an hour prior to delivery to let me know that they were leaving the store and what time they would arrive. I received my 10ft and 8ft ladders. The delivery person was so careful and helpful. We checked them out together and they were perfect. What a great experience and took very little of my time. My hat off to ACE Hardware on 19th Avenue & Indian School and special gratitude to Wes! Finally got this off my to-do list. read more

I have shopped at the store for years with no problems. However today I attempted to return a couple of small hinges and buy a product and that was worth twice that. I had a receipt for one but it was not in the original packaging therefore they denied my return. I understand they may have guidelines. However I asked him to kindly speak with his manager. I could hear his manager speaking to him from the other room but the man refused to come out and talk to me and simply said that he was not available. I was treated like I was trying to rob the place or take advantage of the store by returning a $5 hinge. It was degrading.
