I got a classic Boston donut, but I honestly felt like there wasn't enough filling, which was a little disappointing. My friend got the bacon one and really liked it, although it didn't look particularly fresh to me. My other friend got the Oreo donut and that one was super yummy. Always a stop when I'm in town and today I had exceptional service. I placed my order and the guy was very friendly and threw in an extra doughnut "just because". Absolutely delicious! A good friend took me here for a treat and it did not disappoint! The building's decor makes you do a double take starting from the outside with the great color and mural, and it only gets better on the inside with the gorgeous chandeliers, vibrant colors, merch area, and rotating doughnut display. The late hours are a huge plus which is perfect for satisfying those late-night cravings. I opted for their vegan selection, and it was amazing! You wouldn't even know they were vegan. They have a great selection of vegan donuts but our favorite is the plain old, raised glazed and boy, did it hit the spot! I took my son here for his birthday as a new little donut place to go since I've heard such great things. We enjoyed seeing all the donuts on display and so many different flavor choices. It seemed super clean in there and staff was pretty attentive and friendly. My son chose the dirt donut and the voodoo doll one, my daughter chose the Homer and I chose some donut of the month with cheesecake flavor. The kids enjoyed it, only finished 1/3 of one each and I only took a few bites myself too. For us I guess it was just overly sweet, and we found the place to be more hypey I suppose. Even before they expanded, Voodoo Doughnuts already had a reputation around the U.S. as this killer iconic doughnut shop in Portland that had lines out the door. They were featured on Anthony Bourdain's show many years ago. For me, it was the first time that I had ever seen doughnuts with crazy toppings like cereal and bacon on the top of them. I eventually made my first visit to a Voodoo Doughnut location on a trip to Colorado. I also picked up a Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale to pair with my doughnut. Voodoo Doughnuts offers more than fifty artisan flavors including vegan options. They are known for their creative names like "Grape Ape", "Voodoo Doll", "Memphis Mafia" and "Cock and Balls". The Bacon Maple Bar and The Homer are some of their best sellers. I like that they have a menu on the outside of the building with pictures of the doughnuts on it. It allows you to decide what you want before you go inside. Voodoo Doughnuts are also known for their pink boxes and merchandise. The doughnuts are laid out on a revolving display case so that you can visually see them. Not much is better than a freshly made doughnut. We had the pleasure of staying at the hotel across the street from this new location, and stopped in multiple times during our stay! The interior is bright and pink with a bit of that classic Voodoo Doughnut flair. This is an easy-to-access shop off of Rural Road with free parking. Plus -m they're open late, which is part of the Voodoo magic. Some of the best doughnuts I've ever eaten were served well after midnight at other Voodoo locations (Portland and Austin) - so I had high expectations for this store. Some of my go-to's - like the Apple Fritter and the Homer - definitely lived up to the hype I remember. Some others, specifically the Peppermint Chocolate Crunch, were a little dry for my taste. The iconic Portland doughnut phenomenon, Voodoo Doughnuts, has open a brand new location in Tempe. The crowds during the opening few days open were completely bananas (wrapped around the block). Luckily, we were able to somehow magically order online and that made life a whole lot easier. We got a Voodoo dozen, which includes a staff-picked bakers dozen featuring some classics and some Voodoo Crazy. Plus a few other donuts that we absolutely had to try. A few of my favorite ones included the Grape Ape, Strawberry Go-tart, Vicious Hibiscus, and the Voodoo Doll. Probably my favorite part is that each Voodoo Doll Doughnut looks different and that's just super fun. You have to get one when you go to see what your spooky little doughnut doll will end up looking like. Overall the donuts were slightly sweet for my taste and the crowds were a little much. But now that things have calm down a bit after the initial buzz has kind of worn off, we'd definitely go back. I have ordered Voodoo Doughnuts through Uber Eats like a dozen times. So while I can't speak to the in person service or ambience, I gotta be honest, I don't care. The doughnuts are incredible. My absolute favorite is the maple cream. The ratio of maple frosting to doughnut to custard filling is everything I have ever looked for--I'm all about a nice thick layer of frosting, a good amount of custard, and enough doughnut to hold it up and have a presence that adds to the whole thing. The Banana Cream Pie Doughnut? I don't even like bananas, but that Banana Cream Pie donut is somehow my second favorite! The Boston Cream is solid. Great Apple Fritter and old fashioned. The only donuts that I have tried and been disappointed by were the glazed raised and a couple cake donuts--honestly I don't like the cake donuts as much so I am not factoring that into this review. I just wish the glazed raised was dependable! The glaze was wet, and the texture of the donut was just off. My test for if a place has good doughnuts is to try their old fashioned and if that's good then it sets the tone. I had the chocolate one, it was good. So a couple things to note- this location is in the heart of college town and ASU peeps are mainly who else was there at 10pm. I live down the road in north Tempe so I'm used to the campus feel, I really love the ASU area! I don't usually feel "old" but tonight it was different, I was certainly the most elder person in the store lol. Everyone looked so young to me, that's how you know you're getting older ;) Maybe it's just how it is for a middle aged chick on a Tuesday at 10 pm in a college area doughnut shop haha. So my sage wisdom is this- 1. Don't wait in a long line for these donuts. They are good but not worth wasting time over. 2. I stopped by with friends on Friday around midnight and we were happy that the line wasn't bad. We found a parking spot right at the front entrance and we saw that a lot of people had parked in the vicinity and were walking. We stood outside for about 25 minutes until we finally made it to the door. It was warm out but not too hot. My friends and I are from Arizona so the heat was tolerable but for someone that is not used to the heat, I can see how it could've have been miserable. Once inside the AC was at full blast. Tip: Maybe install some misters outside? We waited in the inside line for another 20 minutes and then it was finally our turn. We ordered 7 doughnuts in total. We tried: One sprinkle Two hibiscus One homer One Voodoo doll One plain One powder There were a few flavors that we wanted but they were sold out :( Our total was about $24 and the cashier was very friendly. She did mess up the icing a bit when handling and boxing some of our doughnuts but no biggie... The outside has three tables so we sat there for a bit to eat. (This area would be perfect with misters) None of the doughnuts were dry which is a plus. On the inside they were airy and soft and the cake textured ones were soft and moist. The icing wasn't too sweet and they all had unique flavors. Do buy a drink though because you will get thirsty! The inside is cute and the chandeliers are beautiful. The donuts at Voodoo are large. I purchased a variety to try. I was excited to try the donuts because I had heard about them before. One of my friends had visited one of their original locations in another state. Each of the cannolos have different flavors, I liked the way the sweet cream cannolo tasted. On the picture of their donuts in the store, the cannolos look like they have the different colored fillings. Of course, because this is a donut, the outside of it was soft. I think it would be exciting if it had a little bit of a crispy crunch to the outside layer of the donut. Otherwise, I would say that this was my favorite donut at voodoo. I especially enjoyed the cream filling. The filling had a clean and non-greasy buttery flavor. I also had a doughnut with Oreos on top. There are two donuts with Oreos on top, but the one that I had was the circular one without the hole in the middle that had a chocolate frosting. That one, they named "dirty old." I thought it would have a filling, because I thought it was a raised shell doughnut and not a raised ring doughnut. The one that I had was good, I could taste chocolate and Oreo. I was glad I could not taste the peanut butter drizzle. The second favorite donut I tried was the maple cream. It had a raised shell filled with Bavarian cream and was topped with maple frosting. It was supposed to have been decorated with a mustachioed face, but I couldn't really see it since the frosting all blended together. I enjoyed the Bavarian cream part of the donut the best because the flavor was good. The maple flavor was also delicious. I may have liked the Portland cream a little better with the chocolate frosting instead. Another donut I tried, was the mango tango. I didn't know what flavor it was before eating it. The mango tango has a raised shell filled with mango jelly and topped with vanilla frosting. The mango flavoring was very light, and I wasn't quite sure that it was mango. In a blind taste test, I would have thought it was some sort of fruit. This was practically the case here because I had forgotten what flavors were which in the donuts. My third favorite was the raspberry with the raised shell filled with raspberry and topped with glaze. I also tried the banana cream pie donut with banana Bavarian cream, dipped in vanilla frosting and topped with cinnamon and banana chip. I usually like Buttermilk style cakes, but didn't get it here. The voodoo doll donut looked cute. It is a raised yeast doughnut filled with raspberry jelly, topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stake. I also didn't purchase this one during this visit. The graphic on the box and the names and the styles of most their donuts are appropriate for the upcoming Halloween season. I feel like they opened their store just in time for the Halloween season. The pictures on their website don't seem to match the pictures of the cannolos on the donut photograph in their store. The other cannolo flavor listed on the website was wild berry. They were out of doughnuts at 7:15 am today. They had one worker who appeared to be in an altered state and I had to wait at the counter for four minutes before he made it from the back (after telling me several times he'd be right there). When I tried to order a dozen, he said they can't do that many--he might be able to get me a single doughnut, but they were out of just about everything. He didn't know when they would have doughnuts again and said they were making them (no offer of come back in XX minutes). I don't know what happened or what caused them to run out of the only product they sell an hour after opening. I've gone here in the past and gotten doughnuts for work and the experience was completely different (better, friendly, actual product on hand--excellent, reflecting the elevated cost that this place charges). I suspect, based on the one stoned worker who appeared to be the only one working, that they are short staffed and have let their standards slip. The kitchen area looked like a mess and the counter items were not displayed with any semblance of order. The dough was excellent the fillings let the side down Passion fruit cheesecake was an expensive donut, $4:50. Not worth the cost. Not a strong taste of passion fruit. I love passion fruit Strawberry go tart. Once more great dough and the jam was pretty tasty. I love these in Portland. But maybe they should stay in Portland. Well they kinda tasted like there were from Portland a few days ago they were pretty old and stale. 7am on a Saturday these donuts should be fresh and fluffy. Not hard and stale. Can't miss Voodoo's big pink exterior on Rural. I first noticed it on opening day as the line was wrapped all the way around the building. I opted to visit and see what all the buzz was about the following Tuesday morning with no long lines. Ambiance: Love the bright pink color, fun chandeliers, brand merch, and rotating display of unique donuts. Service: Just okay. Even though there wasn't a super long line, there was still a wait. And I don't know about y'all but after waiting in line for something, when it finally is my turn, I'm eager for a warm greeting and someone who is ready to ensure a great experience. The guy who helped me wasn't extra friendly, but also maybe I missed the memo and this is the voodoo way? ‍ A big bonus that elevated the vibe here was the music. They were bumping some old school r&b and I was loving it! Food: After getting the worker's rec, I ordered x3 donuts to get a good mix and conduct a little at home taste test. If duty calls one must I got the cheesecake donut (worker's rec), famous maple bacon bar, and strawberry bar. My husband and I split them all and we both thought they were good but not spectacular. Next time I'll try a regular glazed because I'm typically a glazed Bosa donut girl and I think that will be the true test to try their equivalent. Voodoo is such a fun new addition to Tempe on Rural.
