Probably one of the better apple fritters I have ever tasted The big loser was the old fashioned. No taste. Really greasy and over fried The rest were just average. I have ordered Voodoo Doughnuts through Uber Eats like a dozen times. So while I can't speak to the in person service or ambience, I gotta be honest, I don't care. The doughnuts are incredible. My absolute favorite is the maple cream. The ratio of maple frosting to doughnut to custard filling is everything I have ever looked for--I'm all about a nice thick layer of frosting, a good amount of custard, and enough doughnut to hold it up and have a presence that adds to the whole thing. The Banana Cream Pie Doughnut? I don't even like bananas, but that Banana Cream Pie donut is somehow my second favorite! The Boston Cream is solid. Great Apple Fritter and old fashioned. The only donuts that I have tried and been disappointed by were the glazed raised and a couple cake donuts--honestly I don't like the cake donuts as much so I am not factoring that into this review. Can't miss Voodoo's big pink exterior on Rural. I first noticed it on opening day as the line was wrapped all the way around the building. I opted to visit and see what all the buzz was about the following Tuesday morning with no long lines. And I don't know about y'all but after waiting in line for something, when it finally is my turn, I'm eager for a warm greeting and someone who is ready to ensure a great experience. I went in with low expectations because my friend used to live in Portland and said voodoo was overhyped, too sweet and basically not good. But apparently it was a good day for me or it's better in Tempe because I enjoyed my donuts. I wanted the voodoo doll, which has raspberry filling inside and looks like a cute voodoo doll but they were sold out:( The donuts were not dry, not too sweet and bigger than I expected. All yum! Donuts range from $1.50-$4.50 depending on what you choose, which is pretty standard for "fancy" donut shops. I did notice that even though I put whatever pieces we didn't finish in a ziplock bag to eat the next day, it didn't matter. They didn't taste as good. I can get away with this with other donuts but with voodoo, def eat it all the same day. I love the chandeliers, the main room and back room is open so you can see the donuts and workers making your donuts. When VooDoo Donut hit the valley I knew I needed to try! Good thing VooDoo is opened late cause my hunny and I had a sweet tooth only donuts could cure so off we went! Even though it was like 11pm the place was busy, so it gave us some time to pick out what we wanted to try. We finally had an opportunity to try the legendary Voodoo Doughnut today and we were mostly very pleased. We picked six different doughnuts to try and get a full experience. I have to say that the namesake doughnut, shaped like a voodoo doll was delicious, but the filling only went about half way. The only example we chose that were were not happy with was known as Memphis Mafia. A banana fritter with banana chunks and cinnamon and topped with glaze, chocolate chips, peanuts, and chocolate and peanut butter drizzle. It was a bit over the top and our example tasted a touch over cooked. Service was spectacular and the person who waited on us was very friendly, knew the product completely and could answer any question we asked. The draw back has to be price. Six doughnuts cost us $26.00, which is crazy expensive for a doughnut, even a special one. So, while we were pleased overall, the cost will prevent us from returning anytime soon. Last summer, I went to Portland, Oregon for work, and while I was there, I got to sample several great doughnut chains. None were more famous than the name I had heard for years: Voodoo Doughnut. Imagine my surprise when on September 7, Voodoo Doughnut finally opened in Arizona right across from where I work in Tempe. I walked over but due to the popularity of being there on opening day (and some great media coverage), there was way too long of a line, so I took some photos and came back a few days later. Fortunately, that time there was a much shorter line, and I left quite happy! Everyone working seemed to truly care about what they were doing whether they were creating the doughnut masterpieces or they were selling them. There was an obvious place to walk to remain in line but to see a bit of everything going on. There was a glass wall to see through to where the doughnuts were being made so that we could watch while in line. There were also revolving displays by the register so that we could see a finished product before placing an order. They also sold merchandise, especially with Voodoo Doughnuts being a well-known chain. It was fun to see traditional Voodoo Doughnut options along with some personalized Arizona State University doughnuts. Later, when the Diamondbacks were in the World Series, they even had special priced Diamondback doughnuts! They also have other doughnuts that appear on their menu sometimes that benefit other charities like the Dreamweaver doughnut that benefits Make a Wish, which is made with a raised yeast star-shaped shell filled caramel cream, dipped in strawberry frosting, and topped with a white chocolate drizzle and toffee bits. When I first went to Voodoo Doughnut, I only got two doughnuts but I wanted one simpler one and one more fun doughnut (with chocolate). I chose a blueberry cake (blueberry cake with glaze) and a Diablos Rex (Devil's food cake with chocolate frosting, red sprinkles, a vanilla frosting pentagram, and chocolate chips in the middle). I was served both in a huge pink doughnut box that typically held a dozen doughnuts. It made for a fun souvenir! Both doughnuts were so tasty, and I've already been back several times. I also learned later that they do participate in delivery and pick-up orders through their website and also through Uber Eats and other online ordering platforms. They had one worker who appeared to be in an altered state and I had to wait at the counter for four minutes before he made it from the back (after telling me several times he'd be right there). He didn't know when they would have doughnuts again and said they were making them (no offer of come back in XX minutes). I don't know what happened or what caused them to run out of the only product they sell an hour after opening. I've gone here in the past and gotten doughnuts for work and the experience was completely different (better, friendly, actual product on hand--excellent, reflecting the elevated cost that this place charges). I suspect, based on the one stoned worker who appeared to be the only one working, that they are short staffed and have let their standards slip. The kitchen area looked like a mess and the counter items were not displayed with any semblance of order. There is another place in Tempe that sells the worlds best fritter so I kept comparing that to this one. Did have lots of apple but just a bit overdone in the cooking in my opinion. It was a bit dry. Go Tart: A play on the classic pop-tart with raspberry jam filling. Again, the donut is dry in our opinion. Portland Cream: A play on your classic Boston cream filled donut. It had plenty of cream filling and the chocolate top was rich and good. My opinion is that this was the best one. There was a line but it moved quickly. They have a few display cabinets that spin the offerings they have. Lots of fun and quirky options for sure!
