    Generous Garnishes

If you're new to the area, put VN PHO on your "must try" list--their Pho is "4.7-Stars", arguably the best in Wenatchee! The broth on my order of "[P10] Pho Ga with Chicken", was excellent--nothing less than the full cultural version of ethnic Pho. The broth alone is the reason to dine at VN. The flavors of star anise, cardamom, coriander, fish sauce, onion, cilantro, basil--all were there! If there were cinnamon, sugar, and mint, I didn't notice. But the overall encompassing flavor of the broth was complete--traveled from nose across every taste-zone of my palate. In fact, I note that the broth can be ordered separately, imagine that. The generous plate of garnishes was totally fresh (see the pic). Particularly the amount of jalapeño and Thai basil were substantial and enough to last through the whole meal. Every few spoon-fulls of soup, I bit the lime wedge for a jolt of citrus...so good! And yes, there was more chicken in the soup than expected, but I must admit it lacked luster--not that it was old, or overcooked. I was fresh and supple...no complaint...but... ...as is typical in so many Pho restaurants, the broth is generically made (usually in one form for meat, and in another form for chicken and seafood). The protein is cooked separately and added based on which entrée ordered. In my case the chicken breast had been simmered in water with no flavorings or spices. So every bite of chicken was a side-dish to the broth. Maybe that was only a one-time error. But the chicken should be marinated or simmered with garlic, pepper, onion and cilantro, first or separately. Those are cheap flavorings--if it was my restaurant, I would add a lesser portion of a marinated chicken (and save cost doing it). There was no lack of portion-size to my Pho. I ordered the "Small" and it was still more than I could eat. I was totally satisfied, and now, only a day later, I'm ready to go back for the multiple-meat entrèes in beef broth. deserves 5-Stars.

The food at this restaurant seems that way. One dish we had was the Chef's Fried Rice. You could tell there was a premade batch of base fried rice to which they added some meat at the bottom of the plate and then put a scoop of the base rice on top. It clearly wasn't all fried together in a wok like most restaurants would do. Order a different fried rice and get different meat at the bottom of the plate with a scoop of the same base fried rice poured on top. The pho was also like a base soup which could go any number of directions depending on what the customer ordered. Pho is just the rice noodles added to the bowl plus the combination of meats that the customer ordered. Just pour the broth on top of all that and that's your bowl of pho. Unlike a pho you would find in a big city pho place you could tell it wasn't based on a typical pho broth made of beef, but maybe mostly less expensive and more easily sourced chicken or pork bones. Big city or small city, perhaps that's no excuse for not having a characteristic pho broth since we frequent the single pho restaurant in the mid-Columbia River Gorge area (with a fraction of the population) and its broth is spot on with the characteristic beefy pho flavor. The food here did satisfy the need for a decent meal. Our order of pho was wrong but it was quickly corrected. Service here was good.

I remember when her two sons took over the business, and I was delighted this August when "mama" visited on a Friday evening and sat down with me, and we reminisced together. I brought my adult son and we once again enjoyed some old favorites: Curried Beef, Combo Fried Rice, Phō, Mushroom Chicken and Salad. The signature attraction of Cuc Tran is their time-honored authenticity. Whether you eat in or take out, you can depend on the always hot and full-flavored profiles of every entrée. I know this sounds like an advertisement, but I have to give credit where it's due--every dish tastes exactly the same as every other time I've ordered it. The consistency is what keeps me coming back. This café is hidden at the rear of the entryway--you have to penetrate the storefront to find it. The locals know it well, but if you're new in town, you'll have to search the address. Once inside, you'll find adequate booth seating with large table surface areas and sauce racks with menus ready... (see pics) ...and if you're lucky, you'll meet "mama"!

Unfortunately, I was on a work trip, but I could imagine this being the first stop then walking off the food. It is on the smaller side of restaurants, but the evening I visited, there was a party of 8 seated towards the back. I'd recommend parties of 2-4 max, but they can accommodate more if it's a slower night. The service was good, nothing over the top, but nothing below average. As soon as I entered, I was greeted and sat at one of the high tops. This high top was on the smaller side, but since I was just a party of one, it was reasonable and I another high top right next to me to use as well. The food came out pretty quickly, which was nice and they were easy to reach if I needed anything. Very welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the crab Rangoon, crispy chicken Thai basil, and a Thai Iced coffee. The server recommended the crab Rangoon when I asked her which she would choose between the shrimp rolls, spicy crispy chicken wings, or the crab Rangoon. They were solid, nothing crazy, but good. The crispy chicken Thai basil was decent as well; again nothing over the top, but the right portion with some heart shaped rice to go with it. In my opinion, it could use a little more spice. I went with the medium, but it was definitely not spicy at all, so I requested the spice tray to fix that. The Thai iced coffee was exactly what I would want it to taste like. Yes, I would recommend this place. Keep the party smaller. I'll have to try another dish on my next trip out here.

Top and Jenny Rojanisthien reopened his parents' "The Thai Restaurant", renaming it "Top Thai" in April of 2025. Google Top Thai to learn their backstory. Food quality and flavors are second to none. I had Panang Curry on Wagyu Beef this evening, with a Kirin Ichiban beer. Where can you order a Wagyu steak dinner for $28? I'm an accomplished chef and I don't know how they can afford to serve that quality for that price (see the pics). Panang is the sweetest of the curries--a combination of lemon grass, chilies, coriander, garlic, cumin, and peanut in a coconut cream, elevated with palm sugar, fish sauce, and shrimp paste. My dish was garnished in fresh Thai basil and julienned bell pepper. The Wagyu beef was pull-apart--that's no surprise! But honestly, even without the beef, this was the best Panang curry I've ever had. Look over the menu--there are so many popular South Asian food options. I'm going to try the "Larb" next time. Special thanks to "Piah" my waitress who plated the leftovers to take home to Sherrie. I said to Piah, "You forgot to charge me for the Kirin!" The furniture is light duty but reasonably new. I ordered Won Ton Soup, Chicken Larb (both traditional Thai entrées), and Green Tea. The Won Ton Soup was what the Chinese would call Wor Won Ton, meaning with other ingredients, in this case chicken breast, julienned carrots, romaine lettuce and diced green onion, all in a homemade chicken broth. Indeed the chicken broth was the highlight of the entrée. The won ton noodles had no filling--just noodles. It's the pork sausage that makes the dish, maybe with a shrimp or two, but nope--this was just a good chicken and vegetable soup. The Larb was recognizable as such, but lacked several classic ingredients one would expect--crispy garlic, lemon grass, lime, mint, and peanuts. It did have the crunch of roasted rice, and a hint of fish sauce, but not enough to bind the ground chicken. And the lettuce was served as a chopped salad with carrots, not as scoops for the Larb. Overall, the meal was good, but neither were probably signature entrées of the restaurant. Consequently, I thought the meal was overpriced. And it didn't help that they charged three dollars for hot tea with the meal--complementary anywhere else! I shall have to come back and try their curries for which they claim bragging rights. Otherwise , for this 1st visit it was a 3-star experience, (which is good, right?). I will add, that the two waitresses were excellent, very attentive.
