It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

The experience was amazing. Speaking of Speakeasy! First, if you don't want to (most likely) get turned away, you will definitely need to make a reservation on OpenTable a few days before. Parking around the area was tough, but you may find a spot if you circle around the blocks. You will need to arrive early to look for parking. When you arrive, you will see the Mexican restaurant El Barrio Cantina. You will want to walk into the alley on the left, then you will see the door with a lantern on your left. Congrats, you have arrived! Knock on the door and tell them your reservation. The bar was popular. Their reservations were all full for the night. Their cocktails were amazing, creative, delicious, and Tokyo-inspired. I love their cool menu design. The bartender was friendly and made some nice recommendations. I had a Meguro River. It's creamy and pretty with floral decorations, served in a mini pot. The Okinawan Gimlet is in cool green. They even have alcoholic gummies and alcoholic shaved ice on menu. After a while, she informed us that the crispy rice we ordered was sold out. She mentioned that the bartender was supposed to let us know, but he never did. What made the experience more uncomfortable was that the bartender seemed to be giving most of his attention to the Caucasian customers on the other side of the bar. We were the only Asian customers there, and unfortunately, this left us feeling like we were being treated differently because of our race. The good food and drinks helped compensate for the poor service, so we decided not to let it ruin our evening. However, things got even more disappointing at the end. After I paid, I noticed that I had been charged for the crispy rice even though we never received it. When our server tried to address the issue, the bartender appeared to ignore both her and us, so we eventually left. I hope management sees this review and reaches out to me to address the overcharge and the overall experience. Overall, although the food and drinks were good, the service and the way we were treated left a very negative impression. Unfortunately, I will not be returning.

Fascinating! One knock -- at 5pm those windows let in a lot of sunlight. Not the moody cocktail-bar vibe yet. That's on me for going at open. Means I have to come back at night for Thursday jazz, when the $5 off runs all night. Yeah, I'll be back!

We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. Overall, highly recommend checking out this vibey vintage Taiwanese-inspired speakeasy (that my inner history nerd was so excited about), and I'll definitely be back to try their food items as well as their two other bar/restaurant concepts!

At 6pm on a Sunday evening, we were lucky to grab a spot in front. We sat at the bar which is just inside the entrance. The main room has various tables and chairs in the center, and Victorian style chairs and couches along the front and side walls. There's a small stage area in the back where they host a lot of events. There's also some outdoor patio seating and an event room upstairs. There were good mellow vibes on a non-event night, and there was good music playing. They also have some Halloween décor up. I started out with the Ooogie Boogie (Proper Twelve Apple Irish Whiskey, Manzanilla sherry, Mela apple liqueur, Luxardo del Santo, green apple juice, simple syrup, $15). This was absolutely delicious and not sweet at all. It has a few layers of crisp, slightly tart, apple flavor. You would never guess this is an Irish whiskey cocktail. She started out with the Deadly Nightshade (butterfly peaflower-infused Centanario Plata tequila, Tott's Champaigne, Crème de Violette, Van Gough Blueberry & Acai vodka, Salers gentian amaro, butterfly peaflower syrup, lime super-juice, $15). This drink is pretty large, is well balanced, and has some complexity. She loved it. We shared Jack, The Pumpkin King (400 Conejos mezcal, triplum, chipotle-pumpkin syrup, lime super-juice, $15). This was a solid mezcal margarita with a light pumpkin flavor and a hint of heat. The rim is a mix of cinnamon, turbinado sugar, and salt which was tasty. Bartender Zoe was awesome! She was so friendly, and we enjoyed discussing cocktails and various other topics with her. All three drinks were great, and a bargain at only $15. We will definitely return soon to try out some of their regular menu cocktails.

Folks should be aware this place is capable of treating you with disrespect in person, then when you mention the poor treatment in a TikTok comment, they'll respond without taking accountability and dismissing your experience. They will then ultimately block you - presumably because too many people liked your comment. You guys, that's embarrassing. You need to do better. My comment was completely respectful and an honest concern for how I was treated the one time I ventured in with a friend. Deleting feedback you don't like, customer concerns, and then further blocking those people (I hadn't written anything else. I only noticed because I clicked on the notification that someone liked my comment and saw I was now blocked) makes you look shady and guilty. I'm not a bot, and I explained a very real, possibly discriminatory experience at your bar. If anyone reading would like to know the experience: It was October 21, 2024. A Monday. I should've written this review then but I didn't have anything nice to say, and didn't want to trash this place when it seemed they were struggling due to what the bartender said. I was going through a really tough time, having just canceled my wedding about a month earlier. It was my first outing after a month+ of deep depression. My friend came to rescue me and take me out. I had been meaning to try this place since moving to Long Beach. It was fairly early in the evening, probably around 8pm or so and it was pretty slow. There was music and two couples dancing. We grabbed a table and I went to the bar to get us drinks. As I stood at the bar, some guys had come up alongside me to wait as well. The bartender looked over me and promptly took their orders. I barely had any emotion left in me at the time so I didn't care, and just waited to be next. However, I waited. And waited. And waited. The bartender seemed to be intentionally ignoring me (now the only person standing at the bar). I watched him busy himself with other drinks for the tables, for the guys, and continue to ignore me. Time ticked by and I started to wonder if I was doing something wrong. My friend kept looking over at me from the table like what is taking so long? Minutes and minutes passed as I stood there awkwardly, being blatantly ignored. After a long stretch of time, the bartender quickly said something in my direction like, "If you want to order you're going to have to go to the other end of the bar." I said, "Oh ok thank you." And walked to the other end of the bar. From this point, I was ignored and talked about (full male bar staff) without being looked at. They rudely discussed in front of me how I was standing there, and how each one of them wasn't going to take my order. It had been over a half hour at this point, and I was the only one who had been standing at the bar. It was a slow Monday night. Because I was a broken hearted loser at the time, I started to tear up. Why was I being treated like this? Am I not someone they want in their bar? Is this place not queer or woman friendly?? Why is every other person getting served, while I am blatantly dismissed? After almost 40 minutes, the bartender on that end told me he wasn't going to take my order, and I'd have to go back to the other side again. I quietly walked back over to the other side, feeling so embarrassed and just wanting to leave. It was ridiculously clear I wasn't welcome here, though I had no idea why. I remained standing there for maybe another 10 minutes. The original guy finally relented and begrudgingly took my drink order. He was standoffish at first, until he realized I wasn't upset about any of it. He started to apologize, saying he was brand new, and told me some of the staffing issues they had had that night. He seemed stressed. He recognized he had served the guys before me, and I had been ignored for way too long. He apologized again, and poured us an extra shot in our drinks to make up for the poor treatment. The drinks honestly were terrible lol, but I can only complain about so much. Plus he gave us double the alcohol, so I guess I was grateful. We left immediately after and went somewhere else. I haven't been back since. I wish I could share screenshots of my TikTok comment with the owner's dismissive reply, so you could see for yourselves whether you think that deserved being blocked. She even liked one of my reels from my page? Very odd. People are going to share the truth about their experiences at your establishment, and for you to deny that and block them is wild. You could've responded in a very different way, but you chose to be defensive and shady. That's on you.

A different server came to the table and asked the gentleman next to us to get his empty glass and she completely ignored our side. She did another round and I finally asked her to pick up the bottle that was left by another party before us. I asked her for the menu again, she brought it but she did say that I had go back up to the bar to order any additional drinks. We decided to not order a second round and head up to the terrace.

I haven't been here often, but I *was* here right around when they opened, wherein I determined that the food ranged from quality but a bit overpriced, to just overpriced, a feeling I would still hold, generally speaking. Great vibe, solid service, but maybe a little pretentiously priced (and/or it's just stupid expensive to run a restaurant in this area, granted.) And with *super* pretentiously-priced cocktails, for how relatively simple they mostly are (if I'm gonna spend $18+ plus tip on a drink, I expect Baby Gee-level cocktails.) They also had an impressive wall of craft beer on tap, but also a bit pricey, especially compared to places not on 2nd street, so there was never a particular *draw*. But then I never actually finished reviewing it, because I'm super behind. Anyway, then also not particularly recently, they launched a happy hour, which at the time, especially for this particular part of Long Beach, was pretty stupidly good, with $5 decent sized smashburgers (6 with cheese, 10 with cheese and also fries), as well as $5 craft beer, pretty much all of them, including the fancy, exciting stuff (exciting if you're a nerd like me, the barrel aged stuff, for instance). They also had one specific half hour at the time, which I'd like to immortalize as a super fun idea, where one specific cheap but craft beer was some stupid price, I think like a dollar, but since they had a whole wall of rotating craft beer, a *different* specific cheap craft beer any given day. That's not relevant at all to my current review, but it was fun. Anyway, I still didn't write a review like a year ago when I took advantage of that happy hour, though I did take advantage of it a solid couple of times. Skip forward again to just a few weeks ago, I happened to be attending an event in the general area again, an event that was going to involve more alcohol than food and for which having a happy-hour-timed dinner in the area was going to be useful, so I figured I'd check out whether the happy hour was still there, and it was. At least as of a few weeks ago, the happy hour (3-6 weekdays) was still a thing, and it had gone up a whopping 55 cents per item. Ends up being effectively ~$17 plus tip for a quality smashburger, quality fries and a craft beer, though they didn't have as *many* of the fancy (barrel-aged or equivalent) stuff as they had the first time, they did still have some, and it was still $5.55 for any beer on draft they had. So happy hour wise, that's a pretty good price for this part of the country, I'd say. Obviously only since the burgers and fries *are* also absolutely quality burgers and fries. Not quite as wonderful as my gold standard smashburger at The Stache, perhaps, but still a great smashburger. My opinion on spending almost 20 bucks for what is effectively still just an old fashioned, hasn't changed, though. :p

An Unforgettable Dining Experience at Viaje! From the moment we walked into Viaje, we knew we were in for something special. The warm atmosphere and inviting ambiance set the stage for what turned out to be an absolutely incredible night. May I also mention the background music selection was such a vibe! Anyways, our experience was unforgettable! Adrian, the manager, went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of, making us feel like right at home from start to finish. His attentiveness and dedication to hospitality were evident in every detail. We were also lucky to be served by Javier, who was not only professional but also incredibly engaging. I recently visited this upscale Mexican restaurant in Long Beach for a birthday celebration, and overall, it was a great experience. The ambiance leans romantic, with a warm and inviting atmosphere that adds to the upscale feel. The service was impressive--our waiters were attentive and accommodating, even with our large group. However, since our party was split into two tables, there was a noticeable delay in food arriving for the other table, which was a bit of a downside. As for the food, the flavors were on point. The skirt steak was well-seasoned and full of flavor. The ceviche featured red snapper as the catch of the day, and it was fresh and bright. The sea bass was cooked perfectly, and the grilled octopus was prepared well--tender, not too chewy, with chorizo on top and mashed potatoes that complemented it nicely. I decided to try Vaije last night, drawn in by the ambience. Unfortunately, I have to give this place one star due to poor service and underwhelming food quality. To start, I did appreciate how quickly they accommodated my canceled reservation, which initially gave me high expectations for the service. However, our server was inattentive throughout the entire night. I constantly had to flag down other staff members for basic requests because our server barely checked on us. He seemed far more focused on other tables and appeared annoyed when we decided to order only entrées and one full carte plate. I'm not sure why we were treated differently, but it was noticeable. As for the food, I really wanted to love their barbacoa tacos and dessert, but both were disappointingly bland, especially for the price. We voiced our concerns to a staff member clearing our plates--since our server was nowhere to be found--who said he'd pass the message along. Yet, our server never followed up. The General Manager Adrian is very knowledgeable with the menu as well as the drink selection, him ensuring that we were doing good lets me know that hospitality is a priority and also made us feel at home. Arturo our server is also a reflection of what a perfect server should be. With knowledge and exceptional service and attention to detail. He was very attentive with our table and made us feel at home. The staff in general is very attentive to clearing our plates to wiping the table. The Pan de Elote is a must try! He took the time to explain different brands, production methods, and flavor profiles without ever making it feel overwhelming or pretentious. You can tell Bailey is genuinely passionate about tequila and hospitality. His recommendations were spot on, and we ended up trying tequilas we probably never would have ordered on our own. Viaje is hands down one of my favorite spots in Long Beach at this point. I keep going back and it hasn't let me down yet. The sopes de barbacoa are the reason I can't stop thinking about this place. The barbacoa is so tender and flavorful, and they nail the sopes every time with crispy on the edges, soft in the middle. Get the sopa de tortilla too. It's rich and comforting but doesn't sit too heavy, and it's a great pairing with the sopes. Vibe is laid back, staff's always been cool, and the food comes out fresh every time. About a month ago, I had a reason to be in the area during happy hour again, so I decided to stop and try their burger. The burger is solid, though by itself, I'm not sure it's 13 bucks without fries level good. It's a good burger, and the fried mustard is great, but I didn't really taste any (advertised) plantain, nor whatever "chlorophyll aioli" is. As plated, it's like a 4/5 burger, compared to, for instance, my favorite burger place, Sideburns. It's also the first burger that seemed specifically *designed* to be eaten with a knife and fork, which on one hand really feels, in some way, to defeat the purpose of a burger... on the other hand, if you like spicy hot sauces, the extra star is for their house hot sauces, which I absolutely immediately used all three of to make a fantastic basically smash-burger ahogada. I'm pretty sure this is also the first sit-down restaurant where they just gave me sides of all their house hot sauces by default when the burger arrived, without having to ask for it, which is pretty cool of them. Their hot sauces are extremely good, all three of them. As a hot sauce lover - I would've loved more of all of them. I was there during a less busy time, obviously, and sat at the bar, so that says less, but anyway, the service was great (was great the previous time like a year ago, too.) I sat down at 5:45 (happy hour is until 6), had a food and drink order in at 5:50, burger showed at 6. (Got a second drink order in right at 6 on the dot too, of course.) There's a second add-on special for a boilermaker if you get the burger, so obviously I did that - I love that it features South American products, an aguardiente and a South American beer (I also like that that it means it's not a boring American macro beer, of course.) I also had the lulo margarita, $10 on happy hour, and great. I love learning about new (to me) fruits you don't see often around here, too. Delicious, though fun fact, it was even more delicious after I added a bunch of the lightest, creamiest hot sauce to it, lol. A non-canon modification that, conveniently, didn't require the bartender's assistance, and which I definitely intend to repeat if I'm ever back there (this is also a note to myself). Our server was also patient with our questions and attentive throughout the evening without being intrusive. We spent about 2.5 hours enjoying dinner and catching up over: Baked Brie Brussels Sprouts Steak Frites Everything was flavorful, and the entire experience felt relaxed, peaceful, and worth the price point.
