It's always packed, so I figured it had to be worth trying, and it definitely was! The restaurant is located in a great shopping plaza with an Asian market, boba shops, bakeries, and other stores, making it a fun area to explore before or after your meal. We were seated immediately, which was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant had a fun, energetic atmosphere with great music playing, making it the perfect spot for a girls' night. We started with a few appetizers: garlic noodles, Kickin Wings, and raw oysters. I didn't personally try the oysters, but my friend really enjoyed them. The Kickin Wings were my favorite appetizer! They were hot, crispy, and packed with flavor. The garlic noodles were just okay in my opinion, but the shrimp added to them was delicious. For our seafood boils, we ordered the Special Combo, which included 1/2 lb head-off shrimp, 1/2 lb snow crab, one potato, and sausage for $34.99, with the option to add more items for an additional charge. The seafood was fresh, well-seasoned, and flavorful. My only minor complaint was that the boil bag felt a little small, making it a bit difficult to really dig in and mix everything together the way I like. Overall, we had a great experience! The food was delicious, the service was friendly, the atmosphere was lively, and it was the perfect place to catch up with friends over seafood. There are so many Mexican\Tex Mex restaurants in North Texas and Mexican Sugar continues to impress. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - I love the atmosphere at Mexican Sugar. The restaurant itself reminds me of Mexico inside and out, and the different types of seating (communal, patio, traditional, cool) will give you plenty of options. But in the evening, when Happy Hour begins Mexican Sugar will fill up with tons of patrons and good energy. 1 Star. Service - The service has always been good on my multiple visits. This is a Mexican restaurant, and the staff know the menu very well. If you're not sure how something is pronounced or tastes, just ask! 1 Star. Food - There's brunch on the weekends and traditional Mexican dishes (tacos, enchiladas). On my visit on a holiday, I went with brunch and the Barbacoa Chilaquiles. This is a traditional Mexican breakfast where tender barbacoa is layered on tortilla chips along with a sunny side up egg. The result is a fantastic combination of flavors, texture, and heat. Yes, it's a slow burn, and those of you who like spice will love it. I had to finish it off with a Mexican Flan as a perfect way to cool my mouth. 1 Star. Will I Return? - Yes. I took my mom and my two sisters here to Via Real in Irving for Mother's Day brunch. I had made reservations online for the four of us prior to arriving. I looked at the brunch menu online and it said $21 per person. I thought it was such a great deal. Upon arriving, they also had the same sign up in the lobby for brunch, clearly stating it was $21 per person. We were promptly seated and the front of house was very friendly. Our server was also friendly, but not attentive. The food was mediocre at best, and much of the food that should have been hot was in reality rather cold. However, the reason I'm giving this a 1 star review is because our family feels like we got scammed. The check arrives and it shows that brunch was $38 per person, NOT $21 per person which was clearly posted on the sign at the front. I had asked my server about it, and my sister spoke with another manager about it, and we said that it clearly stated on the sign in the lobby that brunch was $21 per person. The manager did not offer any apologies, did not care at all, and simply laughed off our concern and said "oh, that's because it's Mother's Day". I then asked him why they essentially had false advertising due to the sign in the front lobby with the clearly-advertised $21 per person, and asked why they didn't take it down, and he just laughed at us, completely ignored our concern, and wished us a great day. He did not acknowledge our legitimate concern, and did not care that we just felt as though we really DID get scammed due to false advertising. You should have taken down the sign in the lobby advertising brunch for $21 per person if that was not the case, and you essentially pulled a bait-and-switch tactic. I cannot TELL you how UPSET my sisters, Mom and myself were. I have many high-end clients whom I regularly meet with here for business purposes. I can assure you that not only will I and my entire family NEVER return here, but I will tell all of my clients to never return here due to shady business practices and managers who could care less about feeling like we got scammed. It left a horrible taste in my mouth, my sisters and I were appalled, and felt very bad for the poor experience our Mom had. Avoid the sketchy business practices and mediocre food and service at Via Real. read more

We picked this spot because it was only six minutes from our concert, and honestly, it ended up being the perfect choice. The restaurant is beautiful, spotless, and designed with this New Mexico-Southwestern style that gives it a warm, romantic vibe. Fireplace going, lights low, ambiance on point -- exactly what I wanted. The hosts were friendly and welcoming. Our waiter, Hrek, set the tone for the night. Genuine, entertaining, and super attentive. He walked us through the menu, explained the chef's specials, and made the whole experience feel easy. He was also seriously impressed with how my partner ordered her drink -- gave me a nod like "well done." It was classy, respectful, and honestly a compliment to her taste and confidence. We let him know we were on a time crunch, and he didn't miss a beat. He handled everything like a pro and kept the night moving without ever making us feel rushed. The food was delicious. The only small hiccup was the carrots on my partner's plate -- she prefers them cooked a bit softer -- but her seabass was excellent. Hrek recommended the fajitas with homemade tortillas for me, and he wasn't lying... that meal slapped. So good. The General Manager, Jimmy, stopped by our table a few times and shared a little history about the restaurant. It was a really nice touch. We mentioned the carrot situation, and he addressed it immediately -- no hesitation. He even brought my partner another one of her favorite drinks, and just like Hrek, did a double take when she ordered it. He asked if she was in the industry and complimented her exquisite taste. It made her feel seen, and it added something special to the night. Overall, the experience was fantastic. Between the ambiance, the service from Hrek, and the genuine hospitality from Jimmy, we walked out feeling taken care of. We'll definitely be back. read more

The prices at this establishment do not accurately reflect the caliber of service one should expect. Having worked at several high-end venues, I can assert that this restaurant falls short in terms of service quality, especially given the prices listed on the menu. The portion sizes are inadequate, and the tables are cluttered with overpriced drink advertisements. Additionally, the table setting was improperly arranged. When charging nearly $60 for a single entrée, one would reasonably anticipate a higher standard of service, including the practice of striking a table or just replacing Flt ware that has been taken away, no fresh silverware provided after it has been used for the salad. The salad plates were not removed when the entrees were set down on the table. Regrettably, based on my experience, I cannot recommend this restaurant to others. The pricing is excessive, and the culinary offerings lack creativity. I do not intend to return. Furthermore, I was disheartened by the waitress's dismissive demeanor when she rolled her eyes at me after I inquired about the special and had questions. read more

Worst food I've had in a while. Everything was bland and tasted off, like it had been sitting around in a refrigerator before being served. The chips served with salsa had no salt and the salsa was equally as bad. Are they skimping on salt? The same applies to the dessert. Ordered the cheesecake and it was dry and chunky and tasted salty and sour. Not at all what a cheesecake should be. In fact, it's the opposite of what cheesecake should be. The drizzle of caramel on top was like cement and also had a salty/sour taste. Can't believe I wasted so much money on this stale and badly prepared dog food. If you have any kind of standards, DO NOT waste your time and money here. What a disaster. read more

For brunch, though, starting with mimosas is usually a good choice. Here they use fresh squeezed orange juice, so the taste is good. I had read the negative reviews for this place stating that wait times and confusions with orders were the common gripes. And we saw why. There were a couple of items we had to ask for more than once before finally getting - and our orders did really take quite some time to come out. The time here dragged, even sitting at the bar because the service was slow. And the bar is usually the place for fast service. The food wasn't bad - I had the eggs and enchiladas brunch plate - and funny enough, this was the first time I found myself liking the potatoes more than the refried beans, both of which are common sides for this type of food. The potatoes were done right, while the beans had some sort of weird spice to it. The enchiladas were good, but if you order the plate with cheese enchiladas to keep it meatless, be warned that the sauce is still a chili con carne. The grilled portobello tacos were a bit on the dry side, funny enough, and the sides of green beans and spaghetti squash were better, also funny. This was probably my first and last time coming here, as it just wasn't to my taste. But come on down and see for yourself if you are in the area.
