Food was delicious! So I've been wanting to come here for a while and finally decided to get off my butt and grab some Vegan food! Upon walking in, we were immediately greeted by a very nice hostess who allowed us to choose our table. Once we sat down, the waiter came over with water and menus in which we proceeded to view some of our options. All of the items looked great! I ended up ordered steamed dumplings along with "Tofu and Rice" and my mother ordered the "Chicken and Broccoli". The food was AMAZING! On top of that, there was a "salad" that was given to us that was very good. We also ordered the green tea which was good also. Overall, I really liked the food here. My favorite vegan (really, vegetarian, and vegan if convenient) swung by Veggie Heaven for dinner. We have been to the Teaneck location on numerous occasions, but this was our first experience at their Montclair branch. It is MUCH NICER! I'm not even sure if they're affiliated with each other since they don't accept each other's gift cards and their menus are different. The restaurant is much more up to date in terms of decor, and the ambiance doesn't feel like a large Chinese takeout joint. We ordered the West Lake Soup, BBQ ribs, deluxe scallion pancakes, and Bird's Nest. West Lake Beef Soup is one of my favorite Chinese soups, specifically because of the massive amount of cilantro in it. How dare they call something West Lake Soup with no cilantro in it! But still, it was pretty good, the faux ham was in interesting addition. The BBQ ribs are the same as at the Teaneck location, still not the best vegan imitiation I've had. I'm glad we opted for the deluxe scallion pancakes, because it turns out that they're more like little panini sandwiches than just a stack of pancakes. The Bird's Nest was an interesting sampler of various "seafoods" served on a potato nest. The texture of squid was mimicked very well, but the "shrimp" was a bit mushy. There are only two reasons this doesn't get the full five stars. 1. The "shrimp" they had was pretty underwhelming. It was the one time it really didn't match with the dish, so I would skip anything shrimp. 2. The place was not at full dine-in polish when we went there, but I think that's just because it was at the end of COVID and they were still in the process of reopening dine in. The kind lady over the phone asked how big my party was, and without me even requesting, set up a table for us before we arrived. Upon arrival, we were immediately directed to our reserved seats! I am not a vegetarian but at the same time, not a huge meat eater/lover. My friend--who lives in NJ and is a vegetarian bragged about how good the food is at Veggie Heaven. I wanted to find out for myself. I had the opportunity to do so this evening. Located in quaint Montclair, NJ, Veggie Heaven is situated on a corner and upon arrival, the restaurant already seemed to be hopping/crowded. The space was clean, large and bi-level. Their food is not only vegetarian, but also vegan---Chinese style (including various meat substitutes). For starters, we shared the Shanghai chicken noodle curry soup----very flavorful and delicious with potatoes, soy chicken and carrots. At $7.95, it was a large noodle bowl soup which is why we shared. For main, we chose the popular mango "chicken" which was delicious; however, the sauce thickened very quickly as the food got colder (most likely due to the corn starch). This was my only nitpick. Aside from that, it had generous mango slices as well as grape tomatoes. Our second main was eggplant with garlic sauce. I really enjoyed this selection and it wasn't oily like some stir fried eggplant dishes tend to be. It was also garnished with baby bok choy. Very good. There's the option to select either white or brown rice with entrees and we chose the latter. The service was prompt and the food arrived quickly--actually too quickly--but I suppose it's because they aren't cooking real meat. The prices were very reasonable. Just $20 each in total including tip. I'm still extremely full writing this review as the portions were generous. Honestly overrated! So, I've been here a few times, but honestly it's not all that. I had the curry chik'n which has carrot & potato in it. It was meh, just ok. I also ordered a chik'n ring which didn't really have any chik'n in it. It just tasted like little red circles of oil( red because the wrap it's in is red). It wasn't great. I was looking forward to Veggie Heaven for a while now and I have to say I was sadly disappointed. One of my favorite parts of the meal was the complimentary tea and cabbage + carrots. However, it would have been nice if they poured the tea for me. I didn't realize how heavy and hot it was and I spilled it all over the table & partially into my cabbage. I started with the vegetable soup. It was ok. I loved how the veggies were all small squared shaped, but it was mostly tomatoes. If I didn't know any better it would just be called tomato soup. If I knew that I would have gotten the miso soup. The servers were all nice, but I felt somewhat rushed and I ended up ordering the tofu curry with veggies. I wasn't impressed by the curry especially the consistency. It was gluey and not appetizing in any way. Also, the tofu was heavily fried which I wasn't expecting. I've been to Veggie Heaven a few times and have always liked the food. However, I was there yesterday and the food and service were not up to par. Usually, since the food is so good at this place, I overlook the poor service but I guess yesterday was a turning point. To start off with, it took a while to be seated. One of the customers who was waiting along with us, complained about the long wait time even though there were so many tables available. Eventually we were seated. This is when the poor service issue starts. The waiter was rushing and was getting aggravated when I was placing the order. He didn't know how to explain what the curry vegetarian chicken consisted of in terms of vegetables. Also, I asked if it would be spicy, and he said yes. We also ordered an order of the roasted chicken roll and sweet potato roll. The sushi was excellent but the curry vegetarian chicken lacked in spice and taste and only consisted of potatoes and a few carrots in terms of vegetables. We were not given any plates and the waiter never came around to check on us. Later, he came to clear the plates and in a rush, dropped a fork on my dress, which stained it. I overlooked the check given to us by the waiter and it was miscalculated. We waited around him to come by but after waiting for a while, we went downstairs and had the hostess take care of it. This was my third time at veggie heaven, and I don't think I'll be back here anytime soon. My boyfriend (who's not vegan - loves it!) and I come here at least once a month for dinner, and i come here for lunch quite frequently. They have incredible dish replications for your typical Chinese restaurant foods and quite honestly you can not tell that you are not eating real fish/meat that's why we love this place. The food is not only Chinese based they have all sorts of cultural bits to choose from - lots of American, Thai, Indian..) Honestly the name of this place says it all. My absolute favorite vegetarian restaurant, and I've been here more times than I can count. Both locations serve amazing food, but the Montclair staff has always been the friendliest and most helpful with suggestions. I've brought my non-veggie friends here before and they found it hard to believe that the food was completely meat free. This place has perfected their meat substitutions, and their use of natural ingredients always leaves me full and happy at the end of each meal. The portions are enormous and the prices are cheap, especially compared to some other high-end veggie restaurants. They have amazing lunch special deals (even on Saturdays!) and you can always expect to have left overs to enjoy again the next day. 10/10 would recommend the sesame chicken and wonton soup! 3.75 to be exact. Even though I am not a vegetarian, I surprisingly used to frequent this establishment years ago with a friend after my undergraduate classes back in the day. It does feel the quality slightly fell over the years, but it is still a solid choice for vegetarian Chinese food with "meat". I have still always had consistently good service here and I like the spacious ambiance that is inside. The "meat" options are not bad here, and it is an interesting twist eating here. The only thing that eating the "meat" here does to me is cause my mind to have confusion. I know what the texture of meat should be, I know how it is usually chewed, and while it tastes similar, it is obviously different! The dim sum and dumplings are a solid appetizer choice. Some of the "meat" such as roast pork, chicken roll, and BBQ sticks are god starters as well. As for the main entrees, my favorite dishes here are the almond chicken, pork chop Peking style, mango flavored chicken, sizzling beef with black pepper sauce, heaven crispy beef, and crispy beef with walnuts. As a random note, the shrimp platters confuse my mind the most here, since I KNOW what shrimp looks like... and the "shrimp" here looks nothing like it! After hearing nothing but wonderful things about Veggie Heaven (both here & Teaneck), I decided to take the ride and check it out. On the outside, it is the most inviting place. I walked it and was welcomed immediately. I was seated promptly, and the place was half-full at 6 p.m. I was immediately greeted with a glass of water, tea, and a little salad that was so delicious. Before I left, I took down some recommendations I saw on the site for the Teaneck place and was going to order them. But when I opened the menu, I was thrown into an internal fight of what to order. Everything looked so good. And I was hungry. I finally settled on an appetizer, an order of "Spring Rolls", and a main dish, "Double Delight Eggplant" with brown rice. The Double Delight Eggplant is a combination of soy chicken, soy shrimp, eggplant, chinese green in a spicy garlic sauce. The service was excellent. The appetizers came out quickly and boy were they yummy. Almost immediately after I chewed the last piece of my Spring Roll, the waiter came strolling out with what was to become my favorite dish I have eaten in the past two weeks. The Double Delight Eggplant was so flavorful. The eggplant was tantalizing. The "chicken" and "shrimp" made of soy was so realistically tasting that you would never know that they weren't the actual thing. I could only finish half of the dish. Such a great portion. I doggie bagged the rest for lunch tomorrow at work. I'll make those fools at work jealous with my vegetarian goodness on purpose. I passed on dessert and reluctantly drove home.
