Came here for lunch with my family and Chatni totally delivered. Their weekday lunch special (12-3 PM) is such a steal! $11 per plate, and you get to pick two veggie dishes plus rice. I let our server know the whole meal would be vegan, and he said no problem. We went with chana masala, baingan bharta, mushroom matar, and aloo gobi. All perfectly spiced! Flavorful without setting your mouth on fire (Chatni gets it). They swapped naan for roti (vegan option) and brought out the food fast. I did ask for the chutney and crackers after the meal came out -- last time they served it first, so now I know to request it upfront. No biggie to me! Everything tasted authentic, you can tell they don't cut corners. The decor has that real Indian charm too; idols, warm colors, the whole vibe. It stayed quiet during lunch which was actually nice. And honestly, lunch for two adults and a kid in Montclair for $23? In this economy?? Wild. The food looked and smelled so good we dove right in before taking photos (no regrets). Friday night. i'd just left another Indian joint that was supposed to open at 4 and i get there 4:14 and shut tight. posted on yelp and got immediate response criticizing me lol i didn't even enter the place! lol So i came to this other empty place in montclair one late Friday afternoon as the summer began with Memo Weekend. For me Memo Workend. Used to come here with my insane ex monster years ago. Food was not very good this time. Doughy cracker crusted lamb samosas and tepid white rice and unpleasant naan on the stale side. chai tea had a chewy film on top of the liquid like some sort of skin. Service was atrocious. Horrible. so bad it was almost a joke. i wanted one of the samosas wrapped for home (God knows why). Mr. Casual comes out and i kid you not: cavalierly tossed a sheet of tinfoil at the samosa. i asked "so i just wrap it myself and stuff it in my pocket?" So he left - not to get a container or a plastic bag as asked (rain) but just went in the back to get me off his non-working back with my horrid demands. place was empty. from time i mistakenly entered to time i gladly left. before that he brought out my coke - or was it? a can that said "Bro" on it. And when he sauntered out much later, post-samosa, i had to ask for a glass. I was supposed to slurp out of a can? after eating one doughy samosa and putting the dirty plate on the other side of the table, i watched as he later came to toss the rice bowl and chicken tikka marsala on the table. Doesn't remove filthy dishes (see pic) and i had to say "whoa hold on! Can i have a plate?" Annoyed, he turned to another of the all other empty tables, snatched a table off that and clatter dropped it on my table. Twenty years ago, that would have escalated to more than this post. We stepped in here somewhat randomly while we were in Montclair, mainly because someone opened the door and we caught whiffs of something fragrant and delicious. Like the famed Toucan Sam, we followed our noses inside. There are two menus here, and if you arrive while lunch specials, your server will automatically bring you the menu with the specials. I overheard a nearby table asking for 'the other menus', and based on their conversation, it seemed like they wanted the bigger portions of the dinner menus. Something to keep in mind if you're especially hungry. That said, my husband and I were more than satisfied with our lunch specials. We were given a metal pot filled to the top with rice AND a basket of four naan, each of which were branded with tandoori char and given a generous brush of fat before arriving at our table. Both were excellent eating vessels for our curries. We ordered the chana masala and the chicken tikka masala. The chickpea curry was fragrant, and while some of the chicken pieces were drier than we would've liked, the sauce was incredible. Our surprising favorite was the baigan bharta, a curry made with fire-roasted eggplant. We couldn't stop dragging pieces of naan through this tasty bowl, leaving us to nickname it thereafter the Indian Baba Ghanoush.'. Service left something to be desired. When we walked in, there was a single server who clearly wanted to be anywhere but by our table side. Interactions were kept short and curt, and there was such little warmth and welcome from the moment we arrived, when we awkwardly waited by the entrance and waited to be acknowledged. In the end, we're so glad we came in, because the food is outstanding. If you make it in time for the weekend lunch specials (which includes your choice of two entrees, rice, and naan), know you're in for a reasonably priced and decently filling meal. Finally got around to trying this place and I would say it was just okay. No major qualms, but nothing amazing. For starters, I ordered the chicken 65 and my wife ordered the Samosa Chaat--she mistakenly thought they were regular samosas. It's basically a deconstructed version with pieces of bread in a stew form. She did enjoy it very much. The flavor was quite nice on top of the basmati rice that came with it. The Chicken 65 was very good, but not as spicy as I would have liked. For mains I got the Goat Biryani and the wife got Lamb Saag. For the goat the flavor was amazing, fresh cardamom was coming through. I just wish there was more goat--the meat was tender, but overall dry. The Kamb Saag on the other hand was bursting with flavor. It had a good amount of lamb in there too. Delivery came in about 45 minutes, so not bad at all. Overall, everything was decent. Complaining about price is silly in this day and age since everything has gone up, but if you're going to charge $18 for chicken Tikka masala (again, I have no issue with that price point) you can at least include more than 6 cubic inches of chicken or maybe include a piece of plain naan. This review is for take out, so I cannot speak to a dining experience. If you are craving some Indian takeout, look no further. We have ordered a few times and the food is excellent. I highly recommend the Vegetarian Sample Platter. It came with a samosa, soup, naan, multiple dishes, and dessert. All this for $28! It really feels like a steal. And all of the food was delicious! The portions are generous, and they are not stingy with the rice like some other Indian restaurants. We've also tried Tandoori Chicken and Grilled Chicken Tikka. Both were great. I have ordered from here a few times from DoorDash. This time I order Chana masala and on the menu, it does not specify it having cashews. I am allergic to nuts. It gave me an allergic reaction. I looked it up and Chana masala does not usually have nuts. Places have to do better with specify ingredients, especially common allergies! There are many Indian restaurants to try, but Chatni gives you a delicious menu to sample that is not lacking in flavor and provides an ample amount to share. And instead of ordering naan with your meal, try the poori! The service was satisfactory. I didn't feel rushed, but well attended. The mango lassi was very thick and may prove to be too filling with your meal, but definitely worth a try. The chicken tikka masala and vegetable samosas were so good. The 5 stars doesn't even to tell how the experience was or how delicious the food was! They don't open until 1130, but greeted us in around 1110, sat us and began food service, even apologized that things weren't prepared. The decor was extremely nice, quaint, clean and very intimate, with traditional paintings and music playing. It worked for lunch and would definitely work for a nice dinner date or somewhere nice without breaking the bank. This trip was a working lunch for 2 and their lunch special was a belly buster. For around $11.00, you get a choice of 1 protein and 1 vegetable dish or 2 vegetable dishes. The food was served in these beautiful dishes, but you don't know how much food you actually have until you start to eat. It felt like a well, just unreal amount of food. They ask how spicy you want your dish, I went with the spicy because I can handle heat and it was extremely delicious. We ordered some samosas, which were homemade and are the best I've ever had, and I've had a ton all around the globe. Chicken Tikka was large chunks of chicken breast, but just tossed in an almost flavorless sauce, not chicken slowly simmered in Tikka Masala sauce. We were in the mood for Indian Food and after looking at some of the reviews for Chatni, we decided to give this place a try and ordered via UberEats. For our entrees, we got the Chicken Tikka Marsala and the Lamb Biryani with of course some Garlic Naan on the side! I really wanted to love this place but I think it was okay. Both entrees had good flavor but didn't think it was anything out of this world. I think the Marsala sauce was missing that hearty feeling it gives you and the Lamb Biryani was a tad on the dry side. I was in the mood for Indian food so I decided to try this place. When I arrived I found parking on the street. I walked in and was greeted by the man that took my order over the phone. I ordered the manchurian with gravy (medium spice). They honored the discount I had at check in and the total came to about $13. When I got home I dug in. Darn. I really wanted to find an excellent Indian restaurant this side of Montclair. The search continues. I decided to give Chatni a try one evening because I had the biggest craving for Indian food, not having had it for months. The hubs and I entered the restaurant during prime dinner hours on a weeknight. It was completely empty and one table of 3 entered mid-way through our meal. The server was polite and efficient. We got the complimentary papadum which is tasty as usual, ordered lamb and chicken entrees as well as the garlic naan. The naan was good and sufficiently garlicky. The entrees, however, were a total disappointment. The lamb meatballs were dry, dry, dry - ended up being very 'cardboardy' in your mouth - and same for the chicken. The chicken was also not seasoned at all and the sauce very bland. For a cuisine that relies on the use of vibrant, aromatic spices this was just unexpectedly boring and subpar. I honestly cannot recommend this restaurant based on the disappointing execution fo the entrees.
