Was in Montclair and stumbled upon this Thai restaurant. Basil Indian and Thai Grill is a quaint restaurant located in Watchung ave but the flavors are loud! When we walked in, the food that was cooking smelled delicious and filled the area. We were sat straight away and our food came out very quickly as well. I loved my lychee drink and ordered my pad Thai mild, to be cautious, but I definitely could have handled the medium. We were very disappointed. Our server was very sweet. The quality of food was very poor. Our dosas were very thick like rotis or parathas!! The chicken tikka were HUGE to be cut in our dinner plate - and gravy was too sweet. We ordered mild fried rice and it came fiery spicy. Just overall we left unsatisfied. read more

This is a great spot if you're craving Indian food for lunch. The lunch specials are reasonably priced and there's quite a variety to choose from. If you happen to go during the week, you have your choice of seating and you don't really have to worry about crowds. First time trying Basil Indian & Thai Grill! I ordered the non-veg dinner special for takeout for $35. I absolutely loved everything that it came with!! I've been trying to find a tikka masala that is not too oily, but also a bit thick and this is the one!! We walked into an empty restaurant at 2 pm and ordered the tandoori chicken and the salmon dish. They were apologetic to be out of the salmon, so pivoted ti the lamb stew. The chicken was delicious and so was the lamb...however, later that afternoon I felt sick and was back and forth to the bathroom. Two days later, I was stupid enough to eat the leftover lamb, thinking it was quantity that got me two dats before, but no...I had the runs for the next two days. Clearly, salmonella poisoning in that lamb dish that they kept way too long, and probably just added extra spices ti disguise that fact. When they have SO many dishes on their menu, there is no way to keep it all fresh if there's little to no traffic in the restaurant. read more

Came to Basil on a Friday night. The servers will really nice and welcoming. The restaurant is small and intimate so I wouldn't sit down with a large party. I loved the paintings all around the restaurant. For my appetizer I got tandoori wings which were very flavorful. As my entree I got butter chicken which comes with jasmine rice and garlic naan to accompany it. My friend got the chicken masala. For some reason they looked exactly the same but had a slight difference in taste. Overall the food was pretty good but i feel like ive had tastier butter chicken elsewhere. I did feel it was a little more pricier as well. We did get complimentary rice pudding which was nice. If you're in the area and are in the mood for it, I'd say give it a try for sure. read more

This is a good concept, of mixing Thai and Indian. But then neither dishes tasted that authentic. The samosa chaat was good. Otherwise you have to go all the way to Edison or Parsippany or Manhattan for chaat. The goat curry & Pad Thai were ok. The goat curry didn't seem as flavorful as other Indian restaurants in the area like Jalwa. Pad Thai was on the sweet side, and there are other great Thai places in the area. The chef/owner came out, and he was nice. The service was fine. At first the restaurant was almost empty and it took a while to take our order, but the staff was nice I wouldn't go out of my way for this. We found this place because it was right in between where we both were and seemed like a good meeting place. Yelp reviews came through for me again This place is excellent and a hidden gem. I had the chicken vindaloo, chicken satay and Roti (with no butter). The vindaloo came out spicy as requested and was a generous helping. It came with well-made rice. The roti was perfect, warm and not greasy at all. The tear and texture were spot on, as was the flavor. We were very happy with our meals and also had great service. The woman who took my order was very friendly and even offered us water while we waited for our food to finish. There are dine in tables but they can fill up quickly at peak dining hours. This time we only picked up Indian dishes: * Chicken Trio Kabab - 9/10 - I was worried it would be dry but all three types were pretty juicy, and you can taste the flavor of the herbs in the marinade. * Kashmiri Lamb Briyani - 8/10 - The rice is slightly dry, but good flavor on the meat and it's tender. * Goat Vindaloo - 8.5/10 - There were some small sharp bones, so you have to be careful eating it. The meat was basically falling off the bones because it was so tender and the stew was spicy and flavorful. * Chili Garlic Naan - 9/10 - Crispy and covered in garlic, so it's very flavorful Overall, I would come again to try their Thai dishes. The pad Thai noodles were overcooked and too soft, the lamb was tough, the lollipop chicken was mostly batter, and the cauliflower was so hard to bite through. I am always feel apprehensive when ordering from Multi Cuisine restaurants since there is a good chance that will mess up at least one order. Indian and Thai was a new combo for me, and the price was higher than what I am used to, especially Indian options, but still decided to give it a try. Thankfully, the food was pretty good, and the portion size kind of justified the price. I had ordered Biryani, Dhaba Chicken Curry, and Drunken Noodles. They all tasted good but I personally felt the Thai option tasted better than Indian. They tasted fine but something was missing. Seasoning was a tad bit bland, and Curry Sauce was not as thick as I would have liked it to be. I added some salt to bring out the flavors more but no such issues with the Noodles. As far as their Thai cuisine goes, this isn't authentic. First time, pad thai was saucy; not what this dish is meant to be. Second time, chicken dumplings and green papaya salad. The dumplings had a strong flavor of Indian spices, not at all Thai flavoring. The papaya salad was drowning in some strange sauce that is not correct and tasted like it was from a bottle. My mother and I came in for lunch on a weekday. The server was very friendly. We ordered from the weekday lunch menu which was limited. About 5 Indian option and 5 Thai options. I ordered the drunken noodle and my mother ordered the red curry shrimp. The lunch special came with a lot of food. Service was good at pick up, the woman who helped me was kind and efficient. The food itself was a bit disappointing. The samosas lacked seasoning but tasted good with the sauces on the side but not by itself. The honey chili cauliflower lacked flavor and the pieces of cauliflower were huge. This small restaurant is serving dishes that make you forget your in Jersey. My Tuesday takeout salad and noodles. I was happy to see there was a salad that had grilled corn. Grilled corn adds so much flavor to a salad but it had competition in this one. I added chicken breast and the dressing on the side. The chicken was moist and flavorful. My taste buds were happy without using the dressing. Thai drunken noodles with shrimp, were cooked in the perfect amount of oil. You can taste the spices in every bite and the vegetables are crunchy. Absolutely awful. We had been here several times before and had no issues with the Indian food, but not tonight. We started with the Chana chat, which was fine, but as for the two main dishes...the chicken tikka masala was made with tough, stringy dark meat chicken and it had no tandoori spice on the pieces. Chicken tikka masala is supposed to be made with breast meat. The sauce did nothing to redeem it. The other main dish was matter paneer...green peas with cheese. First they brought us a tasteless dish made with cauliflower, potatoes and peas. We returned it (and I know we didn't order that; the server read the order back to us and had it correct). We were then given green peas and cheese in an absolutely tasteless sauce...not any sauce we've ever been served with that dish before, and we've been ordering it in Indian restaurants for years. we ordered takeout from basil a few nights ago since we are looking for a new go to place. we decided to get our staples: lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, and naan. the service was great and the food was ready on time for pick. all the food was hot and fresh but overall we weren't impressed. the chicken was a little rubbery, the naan was super doughy, the vindaloo had too many onions and a tangy sweetness. all in all this place is okay, the prices are reasonable so if you just want classic indian food i would recommend basil. but we are going to keep looking for better places in the area... read more

Wow! I've had Indian food before and tbh it was a horrible first time experience but this place redeemed itself the food was incredibly well flavored and the service is outstanding. Best part is that they ACTUALLY listen to the order. I say that bc I asked for very mild spice in my food (I don't like really spicy foods) and sure enough it was PERFECTLY MILD. The garlic Naan bread was excellent. The tamarind chutney is quite possibly the best thing I've ever had. And for the piece de resistance...my main course of coconut protein chicken curry was unbelievably good. While it is a "hole in the wall" kind of place, the vibe here is really cool. Easy going place with with welcoming people. The girl at the front, Sujhana (i hope I spelled right; my apologies if not) was so nice and welcoming. The Kashmiri Lamb Biryani was very favorable. If you like spicy food, the hot should be good. I ordered a mild spicy level & it wasn't too hot, and next time, I will be going up a level. Just had another delicious meal at Basil. I had the channa saag (spinach and chickpeas) and not only is consistent every time but it's one of the best, if not the best in the NYC area. And as someone who's been eating Indian food for 30 years, and who lives in the city, I know my stuff. The cooking here is healthy without tons of oil, cream or sodium, which is really hard to find. The ratio of spinach to chickpeas was excellent and the chickpeas were just right in terms of tenderness. Even my wife, who typically does not like Indian food, ate a lot of my meal. I was surprised. I ordered medium spice and it had a little kick but nothing too crazy. We also enjoyed the samosa chaat appetizer and that was delicious as well. When we sat down we had some nice papadams and I requested some mint chutney which was also wonderful and we needed a couple of refills. My wife ordered the green Thai curry with chicken and it was also delicious. The curry sauce was a little thick and paired well with the rice. Lots of veggies in this and she even liked the chicken...and she's the chicken expert! The service was great and just all in all a delicious meal. This place works for us because I'm more of an Indian food guy and my wife is more into Thai. So as long as she has her Green Thai Curry she's happy. The place was busy with lots of take out orders. If you're in the mood for either cuisine, I'd give this place a try. It's a true family business. And trust me, you can even look at all my other reviews, get the Channa Saag medium spice. basil thai is a local halal thai restaurant in the heart of piscataway. and oh my god--so delicious. i decided to get multiple dishes and try bites of all of them for my meal. i got chicken dumplings, green curry, red curry, and the chicken lollipop in honey chili sauce. everything was so incredibly flavorful and yummy. however, i am used to more spicy flavor, so if you're ethnic, get it at spicy instead of medium. every dish was wonderful, but i'd especially recommend the chicken lollipop which was an absolute banger and had me licking my fingers. would highly recommend to anyone looking to eat some authentic desi-thai fusion. p.s. the menu is so huge and there's a ton of vegan / vegetarian options which i never see at other Thai restaurants! yum rating: 9.5/10 read more
