Sla Thai Restaurant - Green curry and Salmon Green Curry - Thai Near Me - Montclair, New Jersey

To start off- I have been all around Thailand and have a strong appreciation and knowledge for the culture. I am sure that is not as common in Montclair and that's why it's so packed here. The appetizers specifically are way overpriced. Chicken satay is $15 for literally the most minimal amount of flat heated down chicken. The dinner was okay. Pad Thai was not authentic. There was no mix of sweet, salty, spicy. We ordered a northern specialty curry and the noodles were overcooked. And the green curry had nearly raw vegetables that were not cooked. Curry should have meat and veggies cooked in it to get a real wonderful flavor in ALL the veggies and meat. We spent $300 for 5 people. So I can assure you we tried a ton of dishes. The dessert: lychee was from a can for $15. The can of lychee cost maybe 2.99 and they charged $15 for half the can. The coconut flan and ube ice cream was the only good thing I would reorder. It was packed too and we couldn't hear ourselves think. read more

Not our first time here but- as always amazing food and excellent service. It does get quite busy in the evening- we went on a Saturday- so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation if you want to guarantee a table. That said, everything we tried this time around was fantastic. The pork belly was especially delicious- curry has just the perfect consistency and taste and the fish was cooked to perfection! No complaints at all! read more

I cannot recommend this place enough. Absolutely adorable spot, perfect for lunch with friends, dinner date or a solo dining. The staff is so sweet and attentive, very helpful on what to pick and what's their fav. Every dish was delicious, and authentic. The baby back ribs are definitely a must order, perfect. The mussels were simple and delicious. Papaya salad was refreshing. Pad Thai was not too sweet and noodles perfectly cooked. The fried fish, flaky and flavorful. The Bamee Hang I've never had before but loved the big pieces of real crab and crispy pork. The Thai iced tea was so refreshing and perfect pairing with my meal. And to finish it off, the sticky rice and mango ice cream was the right note to end on. The ice cream was not too sweet and love the cold and warm match with the rice. Will be back for sure! read more

I saw this place on TikTok, sent it to my friend and we went the following day lol. We love Thai food! We aren't heavy drinkers so we were happy that they had so many great mocktails to choose from, though the drinks seemed to be almost cocktail prices. We ordered a mango mojito (AMAZING), sparkling yuzu (pretty good but tart), and the sunset drink (soooo tasty). We decided to get a bunch of food to share so that we could sample a bit of everything. The scallion pancake wasn't what we were expecting, but still pretty good. It was thick and fluffy like a real package. The dumplings were a good starter. The duck pad Thai absolutely stole the show. It was unanimously our favorite thing we tried that day. The crab fried rice was a close second, you literally can't go wrong with that one. The Jin yang steak was good, but my friend was a little sad that it wasn't really a good sharing portion. That seems to be a personal order, where you might want to get something on the side because it comes with a few veggies. We ordered the coconut flan with ice cream for desert as well as the sweet coconut mango rice. Although I'm not the biggest fan of coconut (my friends ordered those), they were really good. The next time I come I know I'm going straight for the pad Thai. I'd definitely recommend coming with friends so that you can share a bunch of yummy plates like we did. read more

I visited on a Friday evening with a close friend who works at the nearby university and had previously enjoyed lunch here, so we were excited to return for dinner. I made a 6:00 pm reservation for two conveniently through Yelp, and we were seated promptly. We started with hot tea and mango juice, then ordered pad kee mao and pad see ew for our entrees. Unfortunately, the mango sticky rice had sold out, so we opted for the ice cream (two scoops) served with sticky rice instead. While the interior decor and ambiance were warm, cozy, and inviting, the food and service did not meet our expectations. The flavors of both entrees were fairly average, and portions were noticeably smaller compared to other Thai restaurants we've tried in northern New Jersey. I found myself adding chili flakes to bring more flavor to my dish, while my friend felt the pad see ew leaned overly sweet. For dessert, we were told both scoops had to be the same ice cream flavor. The sticky rice itself was tinted a very bright green color, which tasted fine but was visually unappealing and felt unnecessary. Service became uncomfortable midway through the meal. While we were still actively eating, our waitress asked if we wanted everything wrapped to go. Later, around 7:50 pm -- before we had even paid the check -- another server informed us we needed to leave because another reservation was waiting. When I asked about table timing, we were told there is a strict 1 hour and 15 minute limit, which we had exceeded. Having dined extensively in northern NJ, we're accustomed to restaurants allowing enough time to order, eat, and enjoy the experience without feeling rushed. Unfortunately, the focus here felt more on rapid table turnover than guest comfort. As a result, we left feeling disappointed and do not plan to return. read more

Nice and cute restaurant! Very colorful decor! The service was great! Our waiter was nice and helpful! There's a nice vegan selection. I ordered the tofu steak and cauliflower tempura. So we've been in montclair for 6 years now and this was our go to place forever. Suddenly the decline is real. An order of spicy wings turned out soggy. The pad Thai with chicken was basic and my daughter took one sniff of her pad see ew and asked why does it smell like our dog. Gamey ain't even the word. If the weekend has them not focused fine. But I'm uhyper worried about this quality decline. read more

When my fiancée's Thai food craving hit, we decided to break from our usual routine and try SLA Thai for the first time. Ordering take out through DoorDash, we went with two noodle dishes and a classic dessert to get a proper taste of their offerings. My fiancée chose the Pad Kemao, a flat noodle dish with shrimp and eggplant. While she found it satisfying with well-cooked shrimp and pleasant eggplant texture, it didn't quite reach the heights of her favorite version from Papa Thai in Bloomfield. The flavors were good but somewhat muted compared to what she's used to, decent but not remarkable enough to dethrone her go-to spot. I opted for the Pad See Ew and was pleasantly surprised despite an initial strong fishy aroma when opening the container (likely from oyster or fish sauce). The first bite won me over with fresh, perfectly chewy noodles and that great balance of savory and slightly sweet flavors Thai food does so well. My only real complaint was the complete lack of spice, a real miss since DoorDash didn't offer spice level customization for this order. Next time I'll definitely call ahead to request some heat, because what's Thai food without a little kick? For dessert we tried the Sweet Mango Sticky Rice, which my mango-loving fiancée was especially excited about. The coconut flavor in the rice was spot on, rich and aromatic. Although some of the rice was disappointingly dry and hard, like it had been sitting for a while. The saving grace was the perfectly ripe, sweet mango that she devoured happily. I found it a bit too sugary for my taste, but then again, I'm not the mango enthusiast in this relationship. It's a dessert that would satisfy anyone with a serious sweet tooth, assuming the rice comes out fresher next time. Overall, SLA Thai delivered a solid takeout experience with some clear highlights (that Pad See Ew in particular) and a few areas for improvement. The noodle dishes showed good technique with fresh ingredients, though the inability to specify spice levels through DoorDash was frustrating. While it didn't surpass our favorite Thai spot, it's definitely a place we'd order from again - though next time I'll be calling ahead to request spice adjustments and maybe crossing my fingers for better-executed sticky rice. For a first try, it was promising enough that we'd give them another shot when we're in the mood for something different. read more

Elevated ambience in an excellent uptown Montclair location. Service is well-paced: prompt but not intrusive. A strong mix of authentic Thai dishes with some fun fusion elements. Added bonus: we went with another couple, one of whom has a severe shellfish allergy, and she could eat almost everything on the menu. No shellfish is fried in the same oil as other items, which was reassuring. We tried about seven dishes and everything was solid, though there wasn't a true standout. The thing I'd return for most is actually the Thai iced tea, which was some of the best I've ever had. Overall, it's an excellent addition to the Montclair food scene. While it won't make our regular rotation, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone in the area who loves Thai food as it's probably my favorite in Essex County. read more

There's something truly special about sharing a meal with the ones closest to your heart, especially when the experience is elevated by incredible food, welcoming vibes, and impeccable service. SLA embodies all of this and more. Naturally, we had to introduce our bestie to the magic of SLA for lunch--and let me tell you, it was an unforgettable experience. We kicked things off with the curry puffs, and it was love at first bite. Warm, flaky, and bursting with flavor, these little pockets of joy are the ultimate cold-weather comfort food. Paired with their perfectly tangy vinegar dip, this starter set the tone for an exceptional meal. The culinary journey only got better from there. From the refreshing crunch of the papaya salad to the bold, lime-forward depth of their tom yum soup, every dish was crafted with care and packed with authentic Thai flavors. The Pad Thai delivered the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and nutty goodness, while the Pad See Ew stole the show. Thick, chewy noodles coated in a smoky, savory-sweet sauce mingled beautifully with tender chicken and fresh, crisp broccoli. It was comfort food at its finest--so good, I purposely saved some to enjoy at home later. SLA isn't just one of the best Thai restaurants in NJ--it's an experience. Fresh, authentic dishes, attentive service, great prices, and a fun atmosphere make it a standout in Montclair. With parking conveniently nearby, this spot is a no-brainer. If you're looking for Thai food that's truly a cut above, SLA is it. From start to finish, every bite left us wanting more. 11/10--highly recommend! read more

We tried the khao soi, ribs, and pad see ew. Great Thai spot in this part of Jersey :). Perfect amount of spice

Was able to make a large reservation for a reunion meal with longtime friends on a Friday night. The restaurant was very accommodating with our large party size. The inside is nice and cozy with some longer tables along the storefront and smaller tables throughout. Restaurant is BYOB which is a great way to enjoy a meal. Our group ordered a plethora of dishes to share family style. We ordered chicken sate, duck noodle, crab fried rice/khoa pad phoo, massaman ribs, drunken noodle/pad kee mao with beef, and hor mok pla/branzino fillet (we thought we ordered the nam thok pla tod). The crab fried rice, massaman short ribs, drunken noodle were the highlights of the meal and would absolutely order again. The fried rice had a generous portion of lump crab. The massaman curry had the most tender braised short rib. The sticky sweet salty sauce for the drunken noodle was a classic. Wish we had ordered the whole fried fish because who doesn't like a whole fried fish, will definitely next time. Chicken sate was pretty mid, but not sure what else to expect. The duck noodles were the biggest head scratcher. The duck, noodle, and the mushrooms were good separately but the dish ate a bit odd all together with the "sauce" which was more like broth to a bowl of noodle soup. I would skip both. read more

Delicious and fresh food. Ambiance feels authentic. The only thing I noticed is that I've eaten here twice and the flavorful was different. The first time I ordered shrimp Pad Thai. The second time I ordered the vegetable Pad Thai. The shrimp Pad Thai had more flavor in the noodles than the Vegetable Pad Thai. It most likely due to the shrimp. Both times the food was good overall. Service was good and quick read more

Came here for lunch on a Sunday. We ordered glazed ribs for an appetizer. For mains, we got Gang Hung Ley (pork belly and pork ribs in curry), Kho Soi, ground pork over rice and congee. I am more of a Southern Thai girl. The curries from this restaurant seem to be heavier and there are less fresh herbs being used. Their version of Kho Soi isn't my favorite. Service was responsive and friendly. Restaurant was cute and nicely decorated. There are many Thai restaurants in Montclair and this is one of many. read more

It's cute and intimate inside and service is warm and friendly. We ordered the thai sausage appetizer/small plate (I believe "sai ua" on the menu). It was something I don't know that I've seen on other thai restaurant menus so I wanted to try it. Definitely yummy and interesting. Not sure it's an "order every time" item, but definitely a must try at some point. Besides the sausage we got a pad thai and Gang Hung Ley. The pad thai was as good as any - not too sweet. The Gang Hung Ley was another item I haven't seen before and it was a banger. Extremely tender meat in a flavorful sauce that balanced sweet and sour and savory and heat. A must-order. They do not split bills or accept multiple cards, which makes dates or dining out with friends awkward. Despite their discrimination against credit cards, I'd return! read more

My bff and I started with Kanom Jeeb and the truffle roll. Both were very good. Then she got the Khoa Soi and I got the Pad King Sod. I liked mine in its ginger sauce, but after I had a couple bites of the Khoa Soi, I liked that sauce/broth better as it had some spice to it, which gave it more flavor in our opinion. We finished ice cream--I got mango and she got coconut. It was very nice and creamy! We couldn't figure out what the clear oval things that came with the ice cream were. The service was great! Would come back a lot if I lived here. read more

This place was super cute. However let me offer you a tip on reservations, they really don't apply. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table even though our reservation was for 8. So if your planning on making a reservation don't bother, basically it's still first come first serve basis. The pork belly was soooooo juicy and tender. I would of definitely recommend this dish as it was so flavorful. It even reminded me off a Filipino fish kare kare. Pad Thai was good! You can never go wrong with ordering of Thai. Nothing stood out to me but it was good! Truffle rolls did not taste like truffle. It was good, tasted like noodles but however not truffle. Kind of over priced for this as it was $12. read more

"SLA" stands for Simple, Love, Authentic. Another meaning from the words of Northern Thailand, means an expert, knowledgeable and a specialist. They are a family of the chefs from Northern Thailand, and the food served is with fresh herbs and a balance of spice, sweet and sour, and salty, just the way it is made in their home town in Thailand. Perfect restaurant if you're looking for an intimate exclusive vibe for friends. I highly recommend to make a reservation to be safe especially on the weekends. After a long travel day from PHX to NJ, my husband and I were tired and very hungry... We were thrilled when our friend Rikki picked us up at the airport and told us that she made a dinner reservation here for later that evening. She said that the food here at SLA is some of the best, most authentic Thai food she's had, and she was right! It's BYOB, so we brought a rest nice bottle of red wine (thanks R and G) to pair with the meal. We ordered family style and admittedly, a ton of food for our party of four, but everything we had was fabulous! Soups, salads, cauliflower, pad see ew with shrimp, curry duck, and more... there was nothing we didn't enjoy. Our server was attentive and sweet and the restaurant is comfortable with a great vibe.
