I visited Charm Thai Cuisine recently, and while the vibe and ambiance were definitely the highlights of the experience, the food itself was a bit of a mixed bag. The atmosphere is great--very well-decorated and welcoming--but the meal felt fairly average overall. I really enjoyed the green curry and the red curry fried rice, both of which were flavorful and well-executed. However, the basil fried rice was a disappointment and fell below the line for me. Even the drinks, the Thai iced tea and lychee iced tea, were just okay and didn't stand out. The service was standard and the environment is lovely, but given the inconsistent food quality, it wasn't particularly special. read more

Came here on a chilly weeknight for dinner and had a good time. As it was right after the new years, the place was pretty empty. We got seated right away, hostess was nice and accommodating. Charm Thai is located on Bloomfield Ave. in Montclair, in the same location as at least two other Thai restaurants before it. I don't know whether the owner is the same, but Charm is by far the best of all of them! It was pretty cold the night we went, and so I got the Ginger Soup and added chicken to it. We shared a dish of chicken satay -- delicious, with an equally yummy peanut sauce. I know chicken satay seems to be a standard, how can you mess it up? This chicken was particularly juicy and cooked perfectly. Others in my group shared fried calamari and loved it (I'm allergic to seafood so I didn't taste it). After that, one person got the pad thai with chicken -- excellent -- and other got chicken panning curry. Really enjoyed Charm and plan to return when I'm in Montclair again! read more

Delicious Thai food! Came here on a Monday night and it was not busy. I really like the interior decors and the vibe was relaxing. For a party of two, we got the pad Thai with chicken and the Poa Taek Spicy Seafood Tom Yum to share. Both dishes came out hot and well presented. The pad thai and the volcano crispy chicken were some of my faves, they were really tasty and delicious. I usually don't like duck, but their version was incredibly flavorful. I've been searching for an authentic Thai restaurant in the area since my favorite place in Hackensack was sold. Today was my first time ordering, so I ordered a few staple items that would tell me if this place was worth going to. The gentleman that took my order was nice, and knowledgeable about vegetarian & vegan dishes. Papaya Salad - was pretty good. I would have liked more dressing and peanuts, plus there was a lot of cut up lettuce, which to me takes away from the papaya. It was perfectly spicy. Pad Thai for a vegan (no egg) - found a piece of meat in it. When there are dietary concerns, I believe food preparation should be made in a separate designated area to avoid cross contamination. Eggplant Basil (extra spicy) - included large cut up pieces of bell peppers and sliced carrots (like the way they are cut up at a Chinese restaurant). No art to the craft. The sauce was decent, not greasy, but not even a little spicy. Unfortunately this place fell short in flavor and lacked any semblance of authenticity. read more

Lovely setting along the main Montclair strip. While the appetizers are generally tasty including the curry puffs, the mains left us a bit wanting. The curries we had were a little on the diluted side, versus the richer thicker Thai red, Massaman, green or yellow curries we enjoy. The spice level was also quite muted, which suggests that one should probably request for a level that is a bit more traditional than adjusted for American palates. As for the food I felt as though there was a lack of flavor. I would go back and try different items but this experience was underwhelming for me. Saw this Thai spot the other day while in Montclair and thought I'd give it a shot. Ordered takeout. Can't complain the food was pretty good.
