6/8/26 (Update) Hunan Taste is consistently good! Myself and two friends came here on a weeknight. The restaurant is a BYOB. Indoor and (weather permitting) outdoor seating here. We shared platters of Mongolian beef, Grand Marnier chicken and Grand Marnier shrimp. The food is always very appetizing and plentiful. Service was good this evening. However, service can be off on weekends. Always best to make reservations. Even more so on weekends. Takeout is available from Hunan Taste. The restaurant has a small private parking lot. In addition, you can always park in the next door Acme parking lot. read more

I recently went back to Hunan Taste for the first time in several years, and, sadly, my experience was not as enjoyable. The restaurant's dining room was still spacious and nicely adorned, and they even had a lovely outdoor patio, though it overlooked an Acme parking lot. Our server was a delight and completely went above and beyond for us. The food, however, was mediocre. The Pork Soup Dumplings were our favorite item, as their broth and meat were extremely flavorful. However, about two of the six had holes in them, so some of the soup had escaped before they were even removed from their bamboo steamer. The Spicy Chicken Dumplings came in a generous portion of ten, but the fiery poultry inside had a strong "chicken" flavor, if that makes sense. Lastly, we had the Chicken Chow Fun, which was extremely bland and full of gummy noodles. That chicken was tender and had a better flavor, though. I just looked back at my last review to see that we had ordered the same noodle dish previously, and, while it similarly had very little sauce on it, the plate had been much more enticing back then. I also saw a bunch of gnats flying around near our table, which was not appetizing, but in fairness, it was a very hot evening. Despite our mixed experience, the dishes being delivered to neighboring tables all looked amazing. One of the most beautiful Chinese Restarants in the area! Located just off Valley Rd- It's very unassuming outside- but when you step in- the restaurant is much larger than it appears from the outside. High ceilings, gorgeous black floral wallpaper and a lovely oak podium with a white marble counter where the host seats you. Love globe light fixtures create a modem romantic vibe throughout the space. Tonight- every table had a small vase with a single fresh yellow rose. Plenty of seating. Food is wonderful- be sure to try the steamed edemame dumplings, the bang bang chicken, Prices are amazing- most entrees are about $20 (plenty of food to share) and appetizers are about $10. And it's a BYOB. There is free parking in the back. But if all the spaces are taken- you're permitted to park in the Acme parking lot next door. You can't beat it honestly. They give free crunchy fried noodles with every order! What a bonus and great foreshadow! The roast pork appetizer my bf and I were obsessed we both agreed it was prob the best NJ Chinese food place roast pork we've ever had. The rice was good and the noodles fine too! Your typical good Chinese food. Dining room is so pretty and usually packed with families. Service is quick and friendly. This is my second time here and each time we leave so full. This time we ordered the soup dumplings, string beans, chicken fried rice, Singapore noodles, general tsp chicken, and shredded hot beef. YUM! Stopped in today after making a reservation for our anniversary. Waited to get seated. Informed the front we had a reservation. Looked around at the reserved tables and they stuck us in the back corner at a table without a reserved sign. Ordered dumplings, pork friend rice and two meals, one of which was general. Started off with the wontons which were amazing! Loved both the mustard and duck sauce. Dumplings were good, presentation average. Our meals come with white rice. NO RICE was given. We ordered pork fried rice as a variation.. was super upset about ordering a meal that has white rice with it and was provided half, as what was listed on the menu wasn't provided. Almost felt robbed. Didn't bother to tell them as it was clear we weren't a priority. Pretty disappointing, given we were there to celebrate a special anniversary. Looked around the room, everyone else received rice. We wrapped up the meals and left. Had high hopes and was left with less than what we paid for and they didn't provide us with the actual full meal. Forgetting to bring rice was huge. The meals were okay. No pleased. read more

This is a great spot, we've sat down and taken to go and both experience were consistent and very good. We love the fried rice, moo shu, spring rolls, crunch wontons and sautéed green beans! This used to be my favorite spot for Chinese, but they have sadly gone down hill. We went here around noon on a Tuesday and it took about 45 minutes to be served. The fried wonton strips were stale and super hard to chew. My mom got the sesame chicken with wonton soup and egg roll. She said the wonton soup and egg roll were both delicious but the sesame chicken was only okay. She wished the chicken was more bite sized. I got the general tso's tofu which isn't on the lunch menu so I had to pay more. I was disappointed that there were no tofu options on the lunch menu. The general tso's tofu was bland but the tofu was cooked well. Service was excellent, but it didn't make up for the food. read more

I stumbled upon this place looking for somewhere to eat with outdoor dining since I had my dog with me. I was the only one sitting outside so my first thought was that no one was going to pay attention to me and service was gonna be slow if not, terrible because of it. Spoiler - it was not! It was actually the complete opposite! There were 2 ladies who were taking care of me and they were both very attentive and sweet. They both commented on my dog and asked me questions, helped with the menu and asked me if I wanted the umbrella opened too. I wasn't too hungry so I only ordered the dumplings in what was a Sesame chili oil sauce, did they blow my mind? No but honestly, the service alone would make me go back here and try other food items. And for an added bonus, they had brewed unsweetened iced tea (refillable) which is so hard to find in NJ (I'm originally from the south) its usually in a can which is gross. We ordered Hunan Taste for takeout on Christmas Eve. We got the spicy chicken dumplings as an app, General Tao's chicken, Garlic sauce chicken, and Tangerine chicken, and a side of veggie fried rice. The tangerine chicken is described as spicy, but it was not except for the bites I took with the dried chili. The Gen Tso sauce was solid but also not spicy. The pieces of chicken were a bit too large and some had breading falling off, but sauces and fry were good overall. We all enjoyed the garlic chicken and veggie fried rice. The restaurant provided sides of broccoli, wonton strips with sweet and duck sauce, as well as bags of oolong tea which was quite nice. The dumplings, unfortunately, were terrible -- super dense and hard filling, they were not tender or juicy. They were also certainly not spicy. The price is a bit steep, but we'd definitely order again. I was impressed considering the volume of takeout orders they were managing. The restaurant seems very cute inside and would definitely dine in next time. read more

After pining after this place for so long, finally made plans with a group to visit for a weekend lunch. Upon arriving into the business parking lot right off the main road, the ornate pagota-esque facade was unmistakeable. Ordered the peking duck, which came pre-sliced and pre-wrapped in pancake with scallions and hoisin. Saved the trouble of doing ourselves but difficult to appreciate the duck by itself. The duck wraps were packed like fatties, as the kids say. Also ordered the imperial chicken which was perfectly crispy and mala spicy - I'm sweating/salivating just thinking about it. There was some confusion about our order and the staff did have to re-check our table a couple times before firing the dishes so that did delay the food arrival in our bellies. My family and I have been to this place so we decided to come here. We were seated right away as we came when the place just opened. I like the environment as it is reminiscent of being in a Chinese village. Our server and his assistant servers were good, taking our order in a timely manner and checking on us once in a while. Great and attentive service! Delicious food. Off street parking in Montclair is always a plus. I went there for lunch with my daughter and three small grandsons. The server was so attentive and kind to the children. We ordered two pupu platters as well as an assortment of additional appetizers and a lunch special to share. Went here for a birthday dinner and the food did not disappoint! We came here on a Sunday night, I had read reviews that Friday night needed reservations, but thought we wouldn't need to on a Sunday, but went on a whim and called the restaurant earlier in the afternoon to make a reservation that night with no issues. Thank goodness I did, we arrived and saw 20 people waiting outside! They had a small parking lot next to it, a few spots to parallel park right outside, but there's an acme parking lot also across the street. The food was all reasonably priced and tasted pretty good! It's fun for a casual or dressed up environment. The decor isn't anything like you would expect in a chinese restaurant, but it looks nice! Hands down the worst Chinese food I have had in the NJ/NY area over the past 10 years of living here. There is absolutely nothing Hunan here - it's just a name they chose to attract ignorant Americans who may think it sounds authentic. Every single dish was bland, the twice cooked pork wasn't even edible. The meat tasted a week-old so we took one bite and almost spit it out. To top it all off, in one of the only dishes that was somewhat edible that we got to-go, I am fairly certain we found a worm in it (not positive though - look at pic and judge for yourself). I love this place. Ever since we moved into town, we cannot get enough! When we walk in we are greeted with a nurturing feel. They put much pride into waiting on us. The atmosphere was so cool. We felt very comfortable. They made us feel like we were at home. Half-Peking Duck 10/10: This was amazing. Duck is hard to do, but they got it right. Duck is known for being greasy. But this was delectable. Shrimp dumplings 10/10: Not much to say. It was great. Not doughy. Cooked perfectly. Surf and Turf 10/10: Delicate meat. The lobster was perfect. Not overcooked, but tender. We came here for a repast and chose the $60 menu. The food was excellent, the service amazing, and it was just a great time. To start, we had egg drop/chicken/corn soup, (the corn was a bit odd,) pork soup dumplings, and pecking duck, all of which were great. Then came the entrees, which included three varieties of lobster, a bok choy and mushroom plate, fried rice, filet mignon, and much more. They were extremely kind and allowed us to substitute one of the dishes for the flounder "boat" which was my grandmother's favorite. We had a time last night. We had a time! Hunan Taste was our prepandemic NYE's outing and it felt good to be back onsite last night. I love dining with my cousins because they're pescatarian and try a lot of things I may overlook. For example, my cousin had an incredible fish stew - fish lightly fried, resting in a red pepper sauce. The after kick was a pleasant and twangy surprise! My end of the table ordered tangerine scallops, general tsos shrimp, house special fried rice, dry spicy green beans (a fave!), rolls, and scallion pancakes. Although I didn't partake, everyone said the whole Peking duck was fantastic. Service was super attentive as always and our table always had what we needed promptly. We've been here maybe a couple of times a year over the past number of years. Today we just felt like the food overall quality was very mediocre across the board and the prices too high for the portions and mid level quality. We are happy to pay a premium when the quality is high but this was not it. Here's the rundown: Peking duck - 2 of 5 stars (dry, overcooked duck, we expect better when ordering this) Guilin Fish - 4 of 5 (best dish we had - very good and good portion) Veg Lo Mein - 2 of 5 (sad veggies, overcooked noodles, bland) Peppercorn Chicken - 2 of 5 (really disappointing, very bland, no peppercorn kick at all, dry meat) Mongolian Triple feast - 3 of 5 (shrimp were large impressive and delicious but otherwise mediocre dish) We had remembered a much better experiences but this one was very unimpressive, at least this time. read more

Ordered catering takeout to supplement our family's celebration for our twins' Confirmation. The Singapore meifun noodles with chicken and roast pork were delicious and plentiful as were the sautéed Shanghai bok choy and Shitaki mushrooms. I wished I took pictures so you can see how much food we had and still had leftovers (ordered to feed 10 people!). So glad to have thought to order from here. Authentic, delicious Chinese dishes. I don't usually review a takeout order, but I'm making an exception because the food was really delicious. Everything came very well packed. They gave an extremely generous portion of free crunchy noodles with duck sauce and mustard. We ordered- Wonton soup, Boneless Ribs, Chicken and Broccoli, Mongolian Lamb, Grand Marnier Shrimp, Cold Sesame Noodles, and Sautéed Bok Choy Everything was very flavorful. The dishes are more exciting and interesting than your run of the mill local takeout Chinese. And they dishes that are familiar are much better versions. The prices are higher but the quality is there. Also, the portions are very generous. You get your money's worth. We will definitely order again. read more

First time here and I have to say the food was excellent. We started with the wonton soups, Pu Pu platter, ribs and fried dumplings. If we knew the Pu Pu platter was going to have that much stuff we would have not gotten the additional dumplings. Mongolian beef was delicious. Beef with broccoli was just as good. The filet steak was good. The shredded crispy beef from the traditional Chinese menu was awesome but very spicy . (They didn't put the spicy warning on the scan menu) so they remade it not so spicy. But it was excellent both way. Sweet and sour chicken for the kids. Very large portions. All around nice place. Service was excellent. Very clean too. read more
