There are several reasons why I'm giving this such a high rating. Firstly, the food. Not only do you get a chance to try a variety of regional Indian curries, but they also offer a Seasonal 'emu of specialty selections that you may not think to try. I like that they offer these innovative or socially selections so people can try the real tastes of India. Addie talk to selection is the QUALITY! They clearly use real, fresh ingredients because I had no discomfort after our meal, which tends to be common after eating at many Indian restaurants. I am my scientific proof; food quality is top notch! The service. All wait staff were friendly and kitchen ran like a smooth operation. Given that the restaurant is a small space, it becomes more essential that staff are knowledgeable and coordinated, as was the case here. Everyone was on their A game. Space is small but charming. In Upper Montclair but not at that busy intersection. Parking is on the street, metered. Not ideal but it is what it is. Food is top notch where all the lamb is so tender it melts in your mouth. Although I wish they bring back their Goan sauce they had before closing. When it comes to service, one is treated like you're their number one priority. I would suggest they install an awning to control the draft and the chill of winter. The outside lightings could use an upgrade as it looks too gloomy. The exit sign needs to be straightened as it is dangling on the wall. I had the lamb jalfrezi which was perfectly spiced with jammy tomato sauce. My husband has a saag that was also delicious. The mutton biryani is fantastic, and I'm a huge fan of the Nilgiri, Madras, Vindaloo and Bhuna curries. This Brick Lane Curry House has fallen off. This used to be my favorite Indian spot but in my latest visit I was pretty disappointed. First they gotta get a handle on the order pick up traffic. It's not a big place I get that but it was freezing the night I came and order pick up was doing well but the door opening constantly made the restaurant not much warmer than outside. They need a vestibule or something because that hurts the experience right there. Next up the appetizer, I believe was Aloo Chaat. It came out prepared well enough but it was cold. That's fine but it should indicate that on the menu or perhaps the waiter can warn us. He did so after the fact and swapped it with my preferred Samosas. Still for me a very avoidable mistake. Next, the wait. We waited, waited and waited some more for our food. The table next to us came in arou D the same time as us and were done and drinking their wine and the food STILL wasn't out. What happened? Lastly. It just wasn't that good. I got the Tikka Masala. It was forgettable. It was tomato-y yeah, but it was missing that creamy consistency and slight kick I like. On top of that it's more expensive here than my usual spot, so what gives?? Just a lot of disappointment all around here and it's unfortunate because again, this was one of my fav.s but something happened. New chefs? New management? The Koh I Noor diamond of Indian restaurants! This cozy gem in Upper Montclair is not to be missed. The chef consistently prepares dishes from all over India without missing a beat. Brick Lane is WAY more expensive than other Indian restaurants in the area for the same quality of food and service. Price aside, I enjoyed my meal here. I ordered the Samosa Chaat appetizer ($9 - samosas topped with yogurt, tamarind and mint sauce), Chicken Tikka Masala ($20 - tomato and cream sauce flavored with fenugreek - it's not spicy), and the Mango Lassi ($5 - Indian mango milkshake) to drink. Samosa Chaat was just the right amount of spicy, very flavorful. The Tikka Masala was incredibly rich and creamy, and it was served with a generous side of basmati rice. The Mango Lassi tasted good, but it wasn't served cold at all. I'm not sure if they make it fresh but don't refrigerate the ingredients or if they made a batch in the blender earlier and it's just been sitting there. My waiter was friendly and attentive, and service was very quick. Overall, food quality is great, but is it worth the high prices? Not really. read more

This was truly the worst Indian food I've ever had. We had friends over and we ordered the chicken biryani, tandoori chicken, chicken 65, chana masala, lasuni gobi, peeli dal and moilee curry. First, the food was over an hour and a half late. When it did arrive, two of the items were missing with no explanation. And finally, most of the food was so bad that we had to throw it away. The moilee was so full of turmeric it was inedible and the chicken 65 tasted like it was made of discarded pieces of chicken which were mainly bones and what seemed like chicken feet (not typically used in indian cuisine). The dal, biryani and tandoori chicken were very mediocre and not worth the price tag. All in all a very disappointing experience. Came here for a NYE dinner with my parents and returned a week later with a group of 8. They don't accept reservations but you can call ahead 20 minutes in advanced to hold a table for that long. There is metered parking on the street but you might be in for a walk depending on when you come. They are also BYOB. My parents are vegetarian so this place was great for them because they have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. What I love about this restaurant is that you can choose your sauce from a list of 5-6 options, choose your protein and then choose your spiciness level. If you don't want the make your own option the staff can make suggestions and there are typical Indian dishes on the menu as well. We had: Goan with Paneer and Goan with Vegetables: both were delicious! The curry has a slightly sweet, fresh coconut taste but is spicy at the same time from the chilis. Madras with Paneer: This curry is very similar to the Goan but it has a tomato taste. Matar Paneer, Daal Makhani, Tikka Masala with Paneer - pretty much the same as you'd get anywhere else. A little more on the creamy side compared to some other places. Naan and Aloo Paratha: Excelleng! Their naan is super soft, fluffy and not too buttery. The aloo paratha was fried perfectly and had just the right amount of potatoes. The staff is very friendly and provides good service. I had had a very poor experience here a couple years ago but since then they seem to have an entirely new staff. I'll definitely be back. read more

If you like a sweeter sauce and like creamy nutty curry, get this one. We also got the lamb Jalfrezi curry. This is a medium spiced tomato, onion and bell pepper curry. Really good We also got the Malai Kofta. This is a great option for vegetarians. This is a vegetable and cheese dumpling-ish dish in a mild creamy tomato nut curry sauce. Its like vegetarian meatballs. Really delicious. Not spicy at all, even sweet. We also got lamb tikka masala to go and it was amazing! Now for Phhal curry sauce. We got this as a side. CAUTION. I didn't realize it was the same as the notorious Phhal dish. Well I submerged my naan in it and regretted it for 30 minutes until I broke and got a mango lassi. Its extremely hot, even for spice lovers. Its more painful than tasteful. I love spicy food, but eating a tablespoon was a mistake. This is an extremely concentrated ghost pepper (#3 most spicy pepper in the world) sauce. If you want to eat it, take a drop of it, not even a teaspoon. Only for the adventurous. Came here with my boyfriend this past Sunday and decided to rate this restaurant with 3 stars, mostly because of its terrible service! We entered the restaurant and awkwardly we were standing in the front and no one appeared to seat us down at a table for a couple of minutes while everyone else was just looking at us. Then after we were seated, it took like 15 minutes for the waitress (who happened to be multitasking everything) to take our order. She even took someone else's order that were seated after us! At this point, we were pissed and knew our food would take a long time to come out. It took about 15 minutes for our food to come out. We got lamb masala and lamb biryani rice and naan. Good thing the food tasted great and was the right amount spice level because I would have rated this place a 0! We definitely think this place is low on staff and the owner should hire more waiters, ESPECIALLY for the weekends. Also, the candle glass broke on our table during our meal and the wax spilled everywhere. We actually let the owner know and he just looked at it and said that he would just clean it up after we leave. Did not like that at all. I've been here twice. The first time we shared a chicken tikka masala. It was okay, but for $20, the portion is pretty tiny (maybe 5 medium-sized chunks of chicken, possibly amount to one full breast) and not nearly as spicy as I would have liked. The regular naan bread was pretty standard, but only complimentary with lunch. Otherwise, it's $5 a pop. The only reason we went back a second time was because I booked a Groupon Reserve to get 20% off not realizing until I went to go pay the bill that the Groupon only applied to the Ridgewood location. Apparently, there are 5 Brick Lane Curry Houses in NJ. (Side note: Brick Lane is a street in East London known for its curry houses, hence the name.) On the second go-around, we started with the basil naan bread, which emitted no flavor of basil whatsoever, but at least the color was pretty. We went with the Meat Sizzler (Lamb chops, chicken tikka and seekh kababs). It was delicious, but for $28, I was less than impressed with the portion. Same goes for the chicken bhuna (a well spiced curry where the meat is cooked in its own juices resulting in a thick and strong flavored sauce). For $20, we got the same amount of chicken as with the tikka masala. Although all of their curries are served with rice, they really trap you in to ordering the naan in order to soak up all the extra sauce. Overall, the place is cozy and the service is friendly, but not the most prompt. And the food is good, but I left both times feeling there were other Indian places nearby where I could get comparable quality at a bigger bang for my buck. read more

This is our favorite Indian restaurant. We moved out of state a couple years ago and have still not found a better Indian restaurant. We visit every time we are back in the area and are never disappointed. We had dinner there last evening and there was a problem with one of the meals. I really like brick lane although it is a bit on the pricey side. The curries are very well spiced and flavored along with good veggies and meats. The naan bread is also very nice and hot when it arrives. The most recent time I came here we tried the fried cauliflower appetizer and it was delicious. The sauce was just amazing and it was crispy too. Could not get enough of it. I also love how they give you more rice as soon as you finish the first bowl. The downside of the rice is that it is made with cream so if you are vegan or sensitive to lactose like me, watch out. Otherwise it is very tasty rice. I would recommend coming here for the lunch when it is a bit more affordable but if you don't mind spending about 25 per person for dinner then it's a good spot that's open late to boot. I can say the following: * My P'haal is the hottest curry I've ever had, but still edible. * Whatever you order will have four chunks of meat and the rest will be all sauce. * Fairly generous with the rice, but stingy with other ingredients. * You pay a lot more than you need to here. Montclair has plenty of other, cheaper, and better Indian places. I was really shocked by how expensive - over $50 for us even before tip, and that's for two curries, bread, and raita. (My lassi was free, a prize for defeating the P'haal.) I guess the laminated sheet of paper I got counts for something? And they didn't even put my name on Facebook yet - 48 hours and counting, with other updates so far. The only reason I'm rating it 3 stars instead of 2 is because I think it's fun to find a unique food challenge, and this is a place that will definitely give it to you as hot as you want.
