Service was great even on a busy Friday night with no reservations. We were bit disappointed in the food overall. The ceviche liquid was delicious however the fish was in large chunks which made it off putting. The calamari wasn't anything special, subpar. The potato patty was also underwhelming. Highly rated Peruvian food at Montclair downtown so I decided to give a try. The food is wonderful!!! It's a small place (5-6 tables) so it's better you go early or make a reservation. Parking is tricky since it's at downtown area (meter street parking at paid parking lot). Grilled octopus is really tender and flavorful, the sauce on top brings it to another level. Calamari is not the best, I feel it's cold. It's very small , all I can taste is the fried batch. I don't recommend. Arrozo Con Marisico is a must try. Basically rice soaked in seafood broth, very flavorful and soft. It comes with variety of seafood in there. Perfect portion for me. The staff is nice and attentive. Homey decorations. Clean. We picked this Peruvian restaurant for lunch on a Sunday. Street parking around the restaurant was hard to find, but luckily we got a spot in the municipal parking lot, right behind the restaurant, and on Sunday it's free. The restaurant itself was very nicely decorated, cozy vibe, got a nice bar with seats as well. Upon arrival, we got table right away, as they weren't too busy. The menu had a lot of different appetizers, tapas, Peruvian entrees, side dishes and some drinks. We ordered the crispy calamari that came with tasty sauce on the side. I looked for pictures of the salmon. I had never had fish with a passionfruit reduction, so I was intrigued. It pairs well with the asparagus and sweet plantains. Hefty amount of plantain, skimpy on everything else. I was disappointed with the portion size and the salmon was overcooked with burned skin. I think they might give you more food when dining in as opposed to takeout. They also charge a merchant fee for takeout, so I recommend ordering pickup through uber eats as opposed to takeout if you want to save a few bucks. And if we only had the Classic Cerviche, which we shared, things would be fine. Or perhaps we would have ordered more appetizers and tapas, which I saw many other diners do, things would have been good. But we ordered entrees. I ordered Arroz Chaufa, which I've had elsewhere. It's a version of fried rice with specific Peruvian spices. It wasn't bad, but it was boring and not as vibrant and fresh as I've had. It would have been a 3 out of 5. My friend ordered the Mascado a lo Macho. It was inedible. The breaded fish filet was dry, the sauce very salty, the shrimp was tasteless. My friend ended up sending it back. I've eaten dinner with her for many years, she's never sent back a meal. The staff was accommodating. She ordered another Classic Cerviche and they knocked off the returned entree off the check. This is simply unsatisfactory. Nothing this substandard should leave a kitchen. I thought about going back and trying the tapas and appetizers, but I realized I really had no interest given how bad this meal was for my friend. Plus the Arroz was mediocre. I'm honestly a little surprised at how high the reviews are for this place; maybe we just had an uncharacteristic experience, but my gut says this is a slightly inflated rating based on the Montclair food curve and the novelty/uniqueness of the dishes offered. I came here with my chum two Saturdays ago for lunch. It was empty when we first arrived but filled up pretty dramatically throughout the meal. The vibe is weird; the building very clearly housed a small diner here before, and there probably wasn't a lot they could do about the interior because of it. (And to be clear - that's a tough spot for them. I'm sure it's not easy to grab commercial real estate in Montclair these days, but because this was the spot they picked, they're kind of pigeonholed in some respects). Since Fusionista is putting itself out there as a higher-end restaurant than a diner, it's an odd look. And the minute more than two dining parties were in there, it felt pretty cramped. I did love the llama décor though; the vast majority of art on the wall and a few other accessories highlight them. Fun theme at least but this space just feels off and not very comfortable. Both of us loved the beverage situation. We thought the Chicha Morada sounded interesting and gave it a shot, which was the right call. Very refreshing with a lot of perfectly paired ingredients. It was a gamble to get a full-on pitcher but we came pretty close to demolishing it. Huge highlight and hit the spot. We were pretty hungry but the entrees looked insanely filling so we opted to hang out in the tapas/apps area. Even then, these dishes were gigantic so I can't even imagine what the main courses looked like. We split three apps, which was still way too much - two might have been pushing it. We got the Aji de Gallina Croquette, Yuca a la Huancaina and the Causa de Pollo. The Croquette was my favorite. Very tasty with good flavoring and decent moistness within. The Yuca (essentially edgy thick French fries) were good and we kept munching on them, but the sauce cooled very quickly (or was cool to begin with - we couldn't decide) and lost some points for me there. The obvious Americanized comp is cheese fries, which I don't think I'd particularly enjoy if the cheese sauce was nippy. Debatable though at least. The Yuca itself were cooked well and not soggy despite being mostly covered in a sauce. Not an insult, but it feels like something I would have loved to have eaten in college circa 2AM. The Causa de Pollo for me was the low point. The description on the menu indicated same had avocado but it wasn't evident to me based on appearance, and I didn't like the consistency of the dish or the taste. The potatoes were much softer and the mayonnaise was much heavier than I was expecting. But all of that can be attributed to personal preference - I'm sure there are plenty of people into this but it gave off too much of an egg salad situation for me. The service was pretty uneven. Our waiter was VERY nice and friendly; top marks in that regard. My chum mentioned it several times throughout our meal. But once we had our food, he disappeared and was very difficult to hail down. Some of that can be attributed to the additional patrons that had stopped by in the interim, but getting the check was a process and he seemed to get easily distracted on his way back to our table. This teeny new Peruvian fusion spot is a total gem. In a town teeming with so many different dining options, Fusionista manages to be unique both in flavors of atmosphere. They were both beautifully presented. My friend and I split the Lomo Saltado and the Arros con Mariscos. Both entrees were tasty. I preferred the flavor of the Lomo but the execution of the seafood rice dish. The steak was well seasoned but just a bit chewy. The big surprise was the dessert! Not to be missed. We had initially selected the coffee panna cotta but it turned out that the flavor that day was passion fruit. So we opted for their version of a cheesecake with passion fruit. Oh my!!! Apps/ tapas (from the tapas menu except for the ceviche) *Classic ceviche- tart and just the right amount of tang, our fish was sliced thin and grouped into little mounds, not in cubes as I usually get in other Peruvian restos. Garnished with sweet potato, fried seaweed for some crunch, and Peruvian corn. Will get again and try the other ceviches. *Mussels- steamed and garnished with yellow sauce, pickled onions and lime. The decor, overall design, and service was topnotch. unlike my other reviews, id like to convince you to please get the chicha morada cheesecake. this is a must get. its not too sweet like the drink, if anything i felt it was refreshing. oh, and its incredibly photogenic. their Charapa Ceviche is a must get. its not your classic ceviche, but the influence is there. its gentle, a hint of heat and the citrus comes through. i had the Duo Inca as an entree and it was the perfect snack. the chicken wasnt dry. it had a lot of flavor too. i would come back in a heart beat.
