The seafood chaufa was a little bland, it was almost as if the seafood was boiled and thrown into the rice. Not much flavor. Other than that all the other dishes were amazing! Excellent find, and talk about bang for your buck! Portions were beyond ample and every dish was made to perfection. Fish was perfectly crispy without being oily and slit cubes for easy consumptions. Paired with two sides which we chose the chaufa and yuca fries. The fish was tender flavorful and just delightful! Rice was really flavorful as well and fries cooked perfectly We got the 1/4 chicken because how do you not get the chicken? And it really did not disappoint you could taste the Smokey flavor and the white meat was just as tender as the dark. Plantains we're YUM and veggies were a good addition. Noodle with steak dish was equally delightful. Each bite of steak was beyond tender and the noodles were stir fried with yummy veggies for extra flavor. I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite among all the amazing Peruvian dishes produced by Leña y Carbon (formerly Qenko): There was the ceviche (the Peruvian style is objectively the best version), with a fish that was tender and light, soaking in the amazing citrus marinade. The tallarines verdes were rich and subtly luxurious to taste. The rotisserie chicken had various layers of smoky flavor and cooked to perfection, while the arroz chaufa was straightforward and delicious. It was a "greatest hits" of Peruvian cuisine, and it was all excellent and completely authentic. (I visited their Paterson location with my kids and parents, who are from Peru, and they said it was the best they've had outside of their homeland.) The service was phenomenal and gracious, while the owner, Maria, was just lovely. The decor, too, was unique and representative of an Andean vibe. Great stuff! read more

I had the steak risotto and my parents had the paella and half chicken. My only complaint about the risotto was that it was tight. It wasn't loose like a typical risotto and wasn't made with Arborio rice. However, the flavors were delicious and my parents enjoyed their food as well. The service was excellent. The food here is so authentic and amazingly fresh, I ordered a half a chicken with a salad and yucca fries, wow! The chicken was so tender and succulent and the yucca was fried perfectly! This was my first time trying Peruvian food. Let's start with the muscles. Those muscles had the best pico I've ever had. If you're sensitive to spiciness, don't get the muscles spicy. They were very hot (to me, not to those comfortable with spicyness) but they were so good I couldn't stop eating them !! The menu was so large I may not have everything labeled correctly. I would recommend if you want to try these items you show your server, like I did. I had fish that came with shrimp, calamari, egg, and a sauce. The sauce was creamy and that fish alone was so fresh and flavorful! You can get the fish with or without the head. The steak had a nice texture but could've had more flavor. The fries as well were very bland and could've used salt and pepper. I can't remember what kind of beverages I had but they were both sweet juices, I think one was guava. They were both so good. The muscles were the best thing I had here. Overall I was satisfied and I'd go back to try something else. My server was very nice and patient with explaining the menu as I had a lot of questions due to my unfamiliarity. You will find something for you here. Let me start off by saying the drink is absolutely delicious and really refreshing, I could have drank three of those. My steak was perfectly cooked and super tender and the rice was a nice addition. HELLO HIDDEN GEM OF DELICIOUSNESS. I have no idea why it took us SO LONG to try Qenko in Downtown Bloomfield. We literally live down the street and for some reason, I thought it was a to-go restaurant rather than a cute sit down restaurant that gets dim at night with little candles on the table. (it does have a to-go counter, but that's like not the vibe inside). Q'ENKO'S FOOD IS SO GOOD. We've eaten in the restaurant twice and have ordered to home once in the past few weeks. Our waiter was super nice and gave us tons of suggestions with the menu. Their roasted chicken is delicious, but we're huge fans of the ceviches and the appetizers. Date Night turned into a Disrespectful Rude Evening!!! I do not recommend this place their Papa a la huancaina was SOUR. We didn't complain about it and did not finish this appetizer. I figured they used a different cheese today or they left it out too long and therefore it tasted the way it did. We ordered a rotisserie chicken it wasn't fresh off the stick it was reheated. Still I didn't complain because I thought this was a nice spot (never had a problem before) and I was hoping to enjoy our dinner. Another issue for us was eating off of paper plates. The icing on the cake was when my husband stepped away for a little while and the waitress (the mother of the manager or owner) went to the table took my husbands seat and placed it on the next table so she could seat a family, she left me in awe because prior to that she had taken a chair from our table but asked if she could take it. Yes we had finished our dinner but we hadn't paid the bill and I was waiting for my husband so we could order dessert. Well when I told the waitress where's my husband suppose to sit? She told me we were done eating and that she needed the chair take it up with the manager. I go speak to the manager and she also said you're done eating we need to pick up the chairs. I said she took my husband's seat and we aren't done!!! The manager said you're done and we have to pick up and that's my mother like that was suppose to make a difference. The manager showed no concern after I expressed how unfair I was treated. I received not one sorry or acknowledgment of the poor service customer service. Frustrated and disrespected I turned around I told my husband just pay the bill. We will NEVER come back and that's a shame because I recommended this place to my friends and family and now I will have to tell them to stay away from your establishment. I was craving Paella but didn't want to drive to Newark during rush hour. I old schooled it and called the restaurant. I got questions and I want to purchase those red seasoned onions. Can't order those online. I know it sounded crazy but he was very polite. 20 minutes later, I arrive my food is hot and my onions were in a make me happy size container. He suggested I try two sauces I said only if their hot. They weren't hot but I eat Jamaican hot peppers. So maybe they were. The food was good but the portion was small. We the ceviche it was amazing fresh and authentic to drink we had the Maracuya drink and but the chicha morada was not great a little watery to our taste we had better ones. The 1/4 pollo a la brasa look a little over cook and very small same with the anticucho over seasoning and really dried corn. Rice for the arroz con mariscos a bit under cooked. Strange Name, Awesome food. I live in the area, and when I saw this place going up and read the sign, I couldn't make it out. "What is the name of this place?" "How do you pronounce that?" It actually annoyed me every time I walked by the place before it opened. When it did open, I decided to give it a shot, and man am I glad I did. I love seafood and peruvian cuisine. This place is great for both. The portions are not small, so whoever writes in that they have "small portions" should probably regulate their food intake better. Whenever I order from them, I have more the next day. The Jalea, Ceviche, Pollo a la Brasa, and Chaufa are all excellent. The green sauce they provide with the dishes is addictive, and I always save it for my own meals afterwards. We typically order sushi on Friday nights to celebrate the end of the week, but now Qenko is in our rotation on a regular basis. I'm still not thrilled with the name, but the food more than makes up for it. read more

OMG--I'm so glad I stopped in. This is just what the Montclair/Bloomfield area needed. I inhaled all of my food and didn't have a chance to take photos. I ordered the half chicken (pollo a la brasa) with plátano maduro and chaufa. The chicken is perfectly smoked and delicious. The maduros were perfectly ripe and the chaufa was just great.
