Great little place! This used to be a go-to lunch spot when i worked in the area. I don't work there anymore, but i still return to Vazquez for super yummy food. I have never had a bad meal. Everything is always fresh and piping hot. I've had tacos, enchiladas, migas and never been disappointed. The chips are just right and the salsa is spicy! Service is quick and polite. I used to drive all the way to south 1st street from the arboretum area just to get some decent Mexican home cooking. La Reyna used to be the ishh...totally worth the drive. Unfortunately, after like 20+ years of being awesome, they closed down..and I had nothing to replace that hole in my heart (and stomach)...until now. Vazquez restaurant is amazing! I should've known something was amiss when I walked through the doors at 6:30 PM on a Saturday night and there were only two tables occupied. This is my husband and I's go to for breakfast tacos. The food is amazing, the queso and salsa is made so delicious, and their corn chips are the best I've ever had. This was one of the few things I could eat while pregnant and I'm glad it was this. When I want to treat myself I order their melon aqua fresca. That stuff is so refreshing. I would have to say out of the Mexican Restaurants I've eaten at in Austin, this one would be my favorite. I had the steak fajita nachos and the steak was seasoned exactly how I like it. I still prefer white queso on top of my nachos- but that seems to be nonexistent in Austin. When you go inside- its a little confusing (or at least it was to us), it looks like you should go up to the counter and order but you don't. You sit down at a table and a waiter takes your order. We went here last night. We've driven by here a billion times and never noticed it. My husband adores small, "hole in the wall" Tex Mex, but I'm always a little wary because I'm vegetarian, and sometimes the message doesn't get across, and I end up sick. I tried to be nice and went last night. I was pleasantly surprised. The waitress was the perfect blend of helpful without being overbearing. I asked her if the beans were vegetarian, which usually people don't get- I mean, like, does it have pork in it, or chicken stock, etc. She knew exactly what I meant, and told me yes, honestly, it does, but here are 3 things on the menu that are totally vegetarian, and people order them all the time with success. How nice is that? That never happens! My husband loved the carne guisada. He is a huge fan! I tried cheese enchiladas, and they weren't as good as the ones we made at home, but I want to go back to try the other 2 things she mentioned, and because they serve regular old potato egg cheese breakfast tacos around the clock. The carne guisada,rice and beans were all excellent. The chips were the best I've had. The waitress was slow in bringing refills though and we were the only ones in the restaurant so I'm not sure what the hold up was. Also, they didn't seem to have any refill for the ranch dressing that we put on the side salad. Definitely not a top notch Mexican restaurant, got the crunchy taco plate and the rice and beans were good the tacos were good but the meat good have been seasoned a bit better. The fajita steak was actually really good, tortillas look like they were just bought from Walmart; queso was made with Velveeta.... And it was horribly obvious that it was made with Velveeta and not real cheese. They charge you over $2 for a drink and when they bring it to you it's not a fountain soda with free refills it's a 16oz bottle of soda..... No free refills. Ordered ice water with lemon and got charged for that even though it was not from a bottle. Seriously just go somewhere else, it was not worth the $40 we spent for 3 people. We eat Mexican food all the time in Houston and it's always authentic or at least real food, not Velveeta and store bought tortillas. read more

Ok, I've eaten at two different locations of Vazquez. This one and the other on 183. After the first experience, I was less than positive. After the second experience I was positively disturbed. This is not good mexican food. Period. It's rather awful. It's a dive worth skipping. Yelp has done me wrong. My GF's two 11 year old girls loved it. We loved it. We ended up eating here twice in the day and a half we stayed there. Went to this place for breakfast/brunch both days we were in Austin. I felt that some other reviewers exaggerated the divey-ness of this place. I mean it doesn't have fab decor or anything, but it's clean and well-lit, and the service is pretty friendly. The food is just amazing. I had the flautas, which was pieces of tortilla chips covered in scrambled eggs, melted cheese, and chopped tomatoes, onions, and jalapenos. It came with refried beans and fried breakfast potatoes. Everything was delicious eaten all together with their salsa and fresh chips. Now I'm back up in new Jersey and the closest thing to this available to me are sad-looking breakfast burritos from Dunkin Donuts. Woe is me. read more

This little gem is fantastic! I had to go to Kinkos and was referred to come here for a quick bite by the lady doing my copies. Well she was right! Delicious salsa that comes I with your own pitcher in case you run out and want to fill it up. My iced tea came out in a large glass, which I did not need a refill on during the whole meal. The Monday special is only $8.99 with an enchilada and taco and beans and rice, and it was super tasty. The place is a little unassuming from the front, but it is a really nice and calm Mexican restaurant. It's a great break from the rush in all of the large chain Mexican restaurants. I just paid $12 for chips, queso, and salsa. The tiniest little cup of queso I have ever seen in my life. It's water, it's not even milky. They clearly just melt off brand velveta with water and then sell it to people for $12. Their salsa is tomato sauce with jarred hot peppers. It has no flavor beyond being hot and you can tell it's not made with ANY fresh ingredients. It's not even salsa, it's hot sauce. I was just ripped off. I feel like someone stole from me. A good place for a quick bite and take out for breakfast tacos. They have tow rooms, tables 1-10 are in the original room, where the TV blasts Mexican shows, the other room is a little more quiet, but you still hear the TV. I feel the TV is too loud... A friend of mine recommended Vazquez a while back and I've been hooked ever since. I would give them 5 stars if they had homemade tortillas and from time to time the service is a bit "off" but I can't knock them too much for these things... The breakfast tacos are delish. They are never skimpy with stuffing them (meaning you won't get skinny taco's here). The salsa is excellent as well. Since summer started, my kids and I started going in for the full breakfast: we are in love. My new fave is the huevos divorciados. I could seriously eat this meal at least once a week. The green sauce is amazing (burns so good - lol) and their red ranchero sauce is tasty as well. My 16 yr old orders the fajitas and eggs and loves it. My 12 yr old still orders tacos (but changes up the flavors every time). And I am a huge fan of beans - the refried beans here are just as good as Joe's Bakery (on 7th street) - which in my book means they are d*mn good. The potatoes were great, they are not over cooked, very tender. The beans had a great flavor. The salsa was hot but addictive, very memorable. They had table service, but the waitress never would bring our ticket, I finally went up to the counter to ask and apparently that is the way it is done.
