This is a low cuisine Mexican restaurant so don't come in here expecting white table cloth or fancy drinks. It is not a hangout kind of place and you will not impress anyone here. No gimmicks, not a lot of choices, just darn good Mexican food. There are a lot of cheap Tex-Mex places in this area; however I find them lacking in flavor. At Vazquez, you are getting the real thing. The chips here are of the light, airy variety and the salsa has a kick. The salsa is not the fresh, colorful, watery type that is so common in restaurants today. The salsa is simple, tamato-saucy, but tasty. $2 for single tacos, $3-3.50 for gorditas, and $7.50 for dinner plates. The beer selection is small and there is no bar and only refried beans. Everything we ate was really good and blew our expectations (we didn't have much considering the location, the empty, cheap-looking restaurant). The menudo small bowl was huge and very smelly. The tripe was tender and the flavor was really good, but I couldn't get past the awful smell. My husband swears that the smell comes from chitlins ( not a traditional ingredient). I'm not a menudo connoisseur, so please let me know what it's suppose to taste like. Other than the menudo, everything we ate was super. The carne guisada was tender and flavorful. The gordita al pastor has a nice crispy texture on the outside overstuffed with pork al pastor and fresh lettuce and tomatoes. The chicharron was soft and had lots of flavor. Vazquez is most definitely a hidden jewel tucked into a small strip mall and adjacent to 183A N. I was torn between ordering the tripe or barbacoa. After an icy cold Modelo Especial (2 bucks!) and some chips and spicy salsa the barbacoa won out. Wife ordered a chicken enchilada plate. My barbacoa portion was piled high, tender and had the right amount of spice. Wife said her dinner was delicious but it had a sweet flavor that she could not identify. Empty plates showed our satisfaction with our dinner. Service was prompt friendly and our server stopped by during dinner to ensure that we never wanted for water or beer. I love Vazquez because they have good food at great prices. We usually get either tacos or gorditas which are less than $2.75 apiece. If I'm feeling extra saucy I get the special of the day. We haven't ventured too much into their menu because we like the few things we've had and stick with 'em. Our favorites are the beef fajita tacos and al pastor gorditas, or the Wednesday night special of cheese enchiladas with carne guisada, rice and beans for $6.99. The salsa packs a punch sometimes and service is generally great. They've recently taken over the frame shop next door so they're larger with more tables! We live super close to this restaurant and it looked promising for a lunch spot after we had spent all day moving into our new house. Luckily they were still serving lunch at 4PM! Their chips and salsa are pretty good and we enjoyed munching on them while they made our food. We ordered a combination plate with a gordita and an a la carte gordita. One of them was al pastor and the other one was carne asada. Their carne asada was super tender and flavorful - I was really impressed. The al pastor was good as well, but I find that most places can get this one down pretty easily. The gordita was extremely tasty and the rice and beans that were served on the side were delish (and not dry!) as well. The service was really great, and we got a warm welcome to Austin from the waitress. We will definitely hit up this place again to try something new on the menu! Update as of 2/19/2014. Vazquez has gotten a major face lift! We were excited because of the new fresh look and sat down eagerly to have our meal. That was pretty much the end of our excitement. Vazquez has two dining rooms now but they haven't figured out how to service both of them at the same time. We received chips and salsa and were able to get our drinks ordered. That was the end of it. No one came back to take our order. The waitresses bussed the tables all around us and in the next dining room, but none of them even stopped to ask if we wanted more chips. When I went up to pay for our drinks, they were surprised to find that neither of them had taken our order. Even the waitress who took our drink order and was supposed to come back for our food order seemed confused. I want all the best for this place because we like it a lot. We plan to come back to update this review. I hope, for our sakes, that Vazquez gets their ish together! I was in the mood and craving breakfast tacos. I was looking and found this place down the street from my apartment. I thought I would take a look and try them out. I tried to call but they did not pick up so I thought I would go in and order. I ordered Egg and bacon, potato and egg, egg and chorizo and barbacoa all with cilantro and onions on flour tortilla. I have to say all breakfast tacos should have cilantro and onions because it changes the taco completely and it adds great flavor to it. All of the tacos were relatively cheap but also they packed each taco. I did not have a single complaint about each of the tacos. The egg and bacon is my favorite. We've been coming here for at least a few years now, since before they expanded into two dining areas. We're overall very satisfied and are rarely disappointed. We usually do breakfast on weekends and rotate between a combination of migas, barbacoa, steak tacos, bacon-egg-potato-cheese tacos, al pastor, adobado & chicken and rice tacos. I almost always start out with my own full carafe of coffee, so no worries about having my coffee topped off. Food is always consistent and good. Occasionally we may wait on our food a little if they are super busy. We have never had a problem with the wait staff, they are always nice and helpful. Prices have gone up though since the early days we started going there. It's still pretty much our go to weekend breakfast joint. read more

Menudo is good. Here in central Texas for some reason they use cilantro in menudo and serve it with a flour tortilla. I'm from El Paso. We DONT use cilantro, nor tortillas. Use Oregano and bolillos, either toasted or not. Their menudo isn't heavily seasoned with cilantro & toast is an option to tortillas. It's really good, and great service. I I am disappointed with this restaurant for an unusual reason. I love their food, it's great, in fact it's awesome. It has just come to my attention that when I have paid with a credit card and decide to pay my tip in cash (which wait staff prefers), staff still charges me a gratuity percentage tip after I leave. After checking my statements, they've I added an extra tip on the last 4 times we've been there. This hole-in-the-wall was totally a pleasant surprise. I frequent the Drafthouse but have never seen this until tonight when we were on the prowl for good Mexican food. I will never make the mistake of driving past again. The whole menu is served all day so I can get breakfast tacos at 8pm. Never underestimate the power of breakfast tacos with a good beer after a movie. Or before a movie. Or just because. Maybe you hate movies, but you should still eat here. The GF and I had three tacos each, two sides of guacamole, two beers each ($2 beer during happy hour from 5-9) and still made it out for $30 before the tip. I almost felt like I was stealing from the folks who worked here. The waitstaff was excellent - friendly, attentive, and had great advice on food to try. Every one of our tacos was amazing (barbacoa, beef, adobada, al pastor, and breakfast chorizo with egg). The salsa is also quite spicy and not afraid to melt your face if you aren't ready for it. I haven't had food this delicious in this style since San Diego Taco closed down in my hometown of Omaha a few years ago. I can now say that I have found a successor and I am pleased. read more

Well, I had a completely opposite experience from last night. Last night, I was instantly impressed by the atmosphere and the appearance of the food at Manuel's only to be disappointed by the terrible service and poor food quality. Tonight, I decided to try Vazquez based on the Yelp reviews. However, when I first walked in, I was thinking...really? Looks like a cheap little cafe. Nothing impressive at all. When my food came out it just looked like plain rice, beans and a cheesy burrito. I guess all this is to prove that you can't judge a book by its cover though, because that burrito turned out to be pretty darn delicious. Stuffed with peppers, potatoes, tomatoes and fresh jalapeño, the only thing better was the peppery gravy. The price was pretty surprisingly good as well. Most impressive, however, was the service. The waitress made recommendations to me without me even asking, but without being pushy or trying to upsell. I never ran out of tea, and my food came out very quickly. This wasn't the best Mexi I've ever eaten, but it was good enough (and cheap enough) to warrant return visits - if nothing else for the fast service! The food is amazing! Exactly how Mexican food should be. Simple, delicious and cheap. The chips are warm, fresh and dip perfectly in the homemade salsa. In fact, it's all homemade. The service is absolutely spot-on. If you are there when Cynthia is working, you will have a fantastic experience. She is one of the owners and she really brings a family experience to our visits. That said, the entire staff is awesome, not just Cynthia. I've never had any issues with special requests or recommendations. I recommend the barbacoa tacos and the "Mi Tierra Burrito". I've been here several times with my brother, who lives nearby and eats out often. I can't have too much of the salsa b/c it's H-O-T, but who cares? Everything I've ordered has been delicious. The new decor is lovely, and the staff is very friendly. I've been dining at the Braker Lane and Reseach Blvd restaurants for years. A favorite spot for brunch. The menudo is always perfect. Great daily specials. You've got to try the salsa ranchera. Put it on anything. One time I asked to have to have the menudo put In the microwave (it was really ok, I just happen to like it steaming hot) the waitress replied, "we don't have a microwave, but I'll warm it up for you." We finally came here for breakfast after hearing about it from various friends. My husband and i ordered chorizo & egg plates and my kids got breakfast tacos. Their plates are big, we could have probably shared one plate but we happily ate our full plates the chorizo and egg had really good flavor and it wasn't greasy my only problem is that their tortillas aren't homemade their corn tortillas are pretty good but I just wish they had homemade flour tortillas.
