Staff was very friendly, welcoming and the the cafe was very clean. Quick service as well, getting all of our drinks only took about 5 minutes or so. The low review comes from the pricing, completely overpriced for the coffee. We paid $27 dollars for a Triple iced late, Blended coffee, and small single cappuccino, if you are going to charge more than the large chain coffee shops you need to have amazing coffee and this place was not better than a Starbucks or Peet's. read more

I spent $10 on a drink! $10?? I have been to lots of different coffee shops but never spent more than $6 on a latte! All i asked for was "small iced hazelnut oat milk latte." I didn't want to make a scene about the price because I wanted to see if the drink was worth the price, and it wasn't. It was just an average iced latte! The coffee is pretty outrageously priced. $8 for a blended coffee? They charged extra for whipped cream and then said tax, making it a dollar more than listed. I only came here because Cafe 4 was closed for an event. And I honestly made a mistake. They didn't provide wifi, something about not enough parking spaces? Why say you provide wifi when you don't? Definitely not coming back. Will stick to Cafe 4 or find some other local business to support that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for coffee without so much as a place to work. Like many other posts here. I just wanted to echo that this place overcharges for coffee. The math doesn't even add up! I ordered a regular latte with regular milk and my sister ordered a Almond Coconut Latte with oatmilk. It came out to $16.90. When I saw that total, I definitely made a face and the cashier noticed. He felt the need to tell me it was $1 extra for the oatmilk, which is common. However, that still doesn't explain the total. My drink was $6 max, and my sister's was $8. Delicious coffee, outrageous prices, inhospitable service, cozy atmosphere. This is the coffee shop of contradictions. You walk in, and you want to stay. But then you are greeted by a gruff barista, who offers no help understanding the menu, or any ideas of what is good to order. You feel ashamed for even asking. Then you find out almond milk is $1.25 extra, and coconut milk is $1.50 extra! You are scared to ask how much the coffee is. But you plow on ahead, and order that lavender latte. It comes out to $6.95 with regular milk, no additives! Yes, there is internet, but only after noon. No, there are no outlets. You are not encouraged to stay. "Give us your money, an arm and a leg, take your coffee, and go," is the message. While I DID really enjoy my coffee (still enjoying every sip!), it is too expensive, and I doubt I will be coming back. As a side note, I'm discovering Castro Valley is somewhat lacking in good coffee shops for working/studying. The bad: EVERYTHING ELSE There are no outlets for you to plug in to, & while one could make the argument that all that coffee shops are on the hook for is providing good coffee, the reality is a lot of people use coffee shops as secondary office/study spaces. I could've lived w/the no outlets, but getting asked to leave at 4:15pm when the shop is supposed to be open until 5pm? That's just unacceptable. We were told that the outside seating was open until 5pm, but surprise, surprise they had already put away the tables and chairs there. I have lived here forever and have never been to Valley Java! What a delightful little coffee shop! Lots of teas and mugs and related retail merchandise for purchase that was so cute! The gentleman working greeted me in such a friendly way, like I was Norm walking in to Cheers! Space was really clean and coffee was ready after a very short wait! Gingerbread Lattes are my favorite and this one, while a little sweet for me, did not disappoint! They had lots of very fresh delicious looking pastries as well! Ordered a mocha coffee, and ended up being charged $8 for it. So fine. Tried to get on the WiFi, and the owner would not give it out, even though they have WiFi. Why, I asked? Oh, we only give out the WiFi code late in the afternoon, when it gets slow business. And the coffee shop closes at 5:00p. What a RIP OFF! Typical Chinese owner. The attitude is Buy and Leave. My partner and I were looking for a place to work on a Saturday afternoon. Cafe 4 was closed, and Valley Java was nearby. On first impression, this place seemed absolutely delightful. Exposed wood decor, comfortable seating areas, and soft jazz music made for a relaxing atmosphere to work. I was immediately taken aback by the pricing. 6.95 for an ice blended coffee is overpriced even for SF standards, let alone a small coffee shop in Castro Valley. The kicker - I ordered my usual, an iced Americano. My partner ordered the ice blended mocha despite the price. I was surprised to find my bill totaled to $13. Come to find out, the cashier/owner upgraded both drinks to larges, and made my Americano a double to boot. I didn't ask for this. Both my partner and I are sensitive to caffeine, so I always order smalls, and also why I don't order doubles. I'll admit that I didn't specify single vs double (nor did the owner ask), but didn't think I needed to as singles are standard. I didn't think much of it at first. I'm one to chalk up individual instances like this to bad luck/miscommunication/honest mistakes. But I witnessed another customer suffer the same fate shortly after. This leads me to believe that these are not isolated incidents. Being rudely denied use of the establishment's one lone outlet was the straw that broke the camel's back. I can understand that smaller, mom and pop businesses are just trying to make ends meet. I'm more than willing to shell out the extra cash in support of that. Unfortunately, my lasting impression of the owner was that he was only interested in cycling us out ASAP to make room for the next customer/buck. I hope the owner will learn to run a more honest and welcoming business, instead of playing tricks to nickel and dime his customers. Do not expect to use this place as a place to study or anything. They offer no outlets to customers. The only outlet that is available is off limits because it is considered a liability. I'm using the last 10% of my battery to type up this review instead of studying because this is how bad this place is. They do have wifi available, but they do not give out the password until six hours after they open. They "welcome people to study" and what not but I guess that is only after 12pm. The owner (I assume) does not keep his and his coworkers act classy at all, cursing very loudly every one to two sentences. Lastly, they false advertise their prices. They market the hot chocolate on the menu as $2.50 for the smaller size and $2.75 for the larger size, but charged us $5.95 for it, regardless of what it said. He said that his hot chocolate was the best in town. Castro Valley needs to step up its game. We also ordered the coffee blended, which is listed at $4.75 for the smaller size and $5.25 for the larger size. We were charged $5.95 for this as well. I'm extremely dissatisfied with this place and would not come back here again. It's like what am I even paying the extra $3.90 for? it's obviously not the wifi, service, or ambiance. I lived in Castro valley for 15 years, and this is the best coffee shop in the town. They've got it all going on, and I'm just sad it took me so many years to discover. The drinks are very well prepared, and not only does it have the great coffee shop vibe inside but also a wonderful outside patio. I've driven within a few blocks of it hundreds of times and never knew it existed. I loved the comfortable seating, the genuinely friendly service, and the chill blues music playing in the background. I came in on a Saturday afternoon to have some coffee and do some work. I unpacked my things and went to order. Regular iced mocha was $7. I have never seen prices like that before. I ask who I assume was the owner why it was that much, and he says something like "our drinks are special, not like Starbucks." Part of me wanted to walk out, but I thought OK this is a small business and supposedly they sell organic, I'll give it a try. Now, I've had good coffees before. I know a place that will sell you a mocha made with fair trade beans, real chocolate and not just one of those squirters you buy at Jetro, and sweetened with local honey. All at around 5 bucks. For $7, I was expecting something like this. Honestly, the drink was crap. It tasted like cardboard and it was watered down. The chocolate was not good quality. It doesn't even compare to Starbucks. I can tell right away the ingredients were bad, something you get at a wholesale. He's not fooling anyone with his organic bs. I'm not sure if the business is struggling or what, but $7 for a drink is outrageous. I tell myself "whatever let me just get some work done and I know for next time." Then, I notice my laptop needs to be charged. I take out my plug and get up to plug it in the outlet, then they guy tells me "we don't have shared outlets." Wow, that's a first for me, even at a privately owned coffee shop. Even after spending money I can't access an outlet? Are you trying to save money on electricity? Cheap cheap cheap. I packed my stuff and walked out. Next time I want to do work on a Saturday, I'll go somewhere else. Even if it means Starbucks. This is a cozy cafe with descent quality coffee that is brewed in the morning and is self serviced in flasks. It is not suitable for working at all because the owner doesn't give you the wifi password if you go there in the morning. I was told that I need to wait till noon. Bigger problem was that they didn't let me use the power outlet to charge my laptop! First time* having Valley Java Organic Coffee & I was surprised on how pure it tastes. Salted caramel frap is my go to drink any time of day. Mine was just how I liked it. Caramel was sweet without being over powering. $6 for a small, kind of expensive but you get what you get for organic & you don't throw a fit. I personally don't mind paying that much for organic coffee. Valley Java is conveniently close to the freeway & Eden hospital which means easy access however parking can be tricky as it is shared with the bike shop about 6-7 parking slots. read more

Im not sure who the people are who love this place on yelp but this spot is weird. We shoulda trusted our gut and gone to a usual haunt but figured I would try this. Went into it with some yelp-y feelers out there. They do still hold you to the $5 minimum card charge which what is this a bar. So stingy. So since I didnt have $2.00 (small decaf is $1.95) I bought a watery medium decaf and some bar because who wants to spend $4.95 on a latte. Weird ambiance, drinks came out quick. Not a soul in the place. Inside closes at 4:30 can sit outside till 5.
