Iced Ube Latte
Michelle C.

First time stopping by since it changed over from Cafe4 to Neighborhood Coffee. The ambience and space is still the same, but they have an updated menu with more options it seems. I like that they have a rotating seasonal menu as well. This time I tried the Iced Ube Latte from the summer menu. I didn't really have high hopes since ube seems to be everywhere lately and not always executed well, but I thought this drink was actually pretty tasty and strong. I always feel like I can get work done and focus here because of how open and spacious it is. Love the view and natural light that radiates inside as well. So many tables and seating options inside and out. Bathrooms are always clean with many stalls available. Service is friendly. Great place to get caffeinated and study or catch up with friends.

I've been coming to Neighborhood Coffee for years, and it continues to be one of my favorite coffee shops. My go-to drink is the orange mocha. Even though it's no longer on the menu, they're always kind enough to make it and it's consistently delicious. The welcoming atmosphere and great service keep me coming back. Neighborhood Coffee is truly a hidden gem in Castro Valley!

Study area

Best cafe and study area in Castro Valley/Hayward hands down! The cafe has good muffins and food for breakfast while you study along with their lavender latte as well! The service was good with fast delivery so you can go to your study spot. The overall atmosphere is really peaceful with a nice view along with free Wi-Fi, charging outlets, and plenty of seating!

Almond Croissant 4.8677999 stars! Maple Latte? 4.746676767 stars

After dropping off the girls at an all-day playdate with their cousins in Hayward, my partner and I started our no-kids date at a gorgeous coffee shop. I had been to the church before, but I didn't remember the massive coffee hangout there! It's so spacious and offers plenty of seating. How long has this place been here? I wish it were closer to where I live in San Jose! I could easily imagine sitting in one of the comfortable nooks, studying or grading papers. It's also a fantastic spot to meet up or chat with a group of friends. It was definitely a nice place for a date! When we walked in, there were hardly any available seats, but the line at the counter wasn't long. We found a quiet corner to sit and enjoyed our breakfast. I ordered a hot latte with maple syrup in the name, though I can't recall the exact name. It paired nicely with my pastry. The almond croissant I ordered was delectable, with just the right amount of sweetness and flakiness. My partner enjoyed his cappuccino and savory bacon croissant. We walked up two steps to the restroom and were surprised to find more seats and tables. I wish I had noticed that area when I was looking for a place to sit. Oh well, it was comfortable where we were. The girls should have more playdates with their cousins so we can come here more often. Is it really called a "playdate" when the kids are 12 and 15, and their cousins are between 21 and 30?

Hojicha Latte

A cute cafe at the top of hill. There's a lot of open space and seating and the drink was solid! It is one of the best Hojicha latte I've had, I can taste the tea and it's not too sweet. I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu.

This play is okay. Pretty mid in terms of the coffee, though the location is super cool. I believe it's inside a church. It's cute, lots of seating and seems like a nice place for people to hang out in between services or just to do work or enjoy a coffee while catching up with a friend. Parking was great so that's a plus.

Stopped by to grab a latte and a pastry on a Tuesday morning. I ordered a salted maple latte and an almond croissant. The salted maple latte was just ok... sadly it looked better than it tasted. I wasn't a huge fan of their espresso as it left a very sour after taste, even with the sweet maple syrup it wasn't very pleasant. Good espresso should be balanced and coffee forward, and I didn't get that. Almond croissant was great, but I was a bit disappointed in their coffee. Ambience is great for studying or getting some work done.

This coffee shop is renamed to Neighborhood Coffee. Either that it was under new management or ownership. Pretty much, everything is almost the same. The menus are now hanging on the ceilings instead at the back of the cash registers making those who have vision problems to see better.

I would give it 3.5 stars! First time here and the view from the cafe is so serene on a clear day. Pretty quiet with a lot of parking around lunch time on a weekday. There was no line but was pretty busy with people studying or chatting at the tables. The area is very vast with a lot of tables. I got the seasonal graham honey latte (decaf) it was decent but didn't really taste any different or special like graham crackers what I was expecting. I also got the seasonal kouign amann which was almond and persimmon. It was a little too sweet for my liking and had a small piece of persimmon in the middle.

We needed somewhere to chill while waiting for a car repair, so walked over to Cafe 4, located within the 3Crosses Church campus, which is a surprisingly extensive non-denominational community! You can drive or walk in to their campus up a small winding hill, and there's so much parking. All the facilities look very modernized, beautiful, and clean. There is so much space inside Cafe 4, though it was surprisingly hard to find a seat suitable for our needs (away from sunlight and next to outlets). I think they could use more seating in here, though the abundant space allows for much privacy. A lot of people were studying or working on laptops. The atmosphere is very peaceful and relaxing - it was almost library-like. Cafe 4's beverage options were reasonably priced and delicious. You order at the counter and pick up your drink there. You also bus yourself, and return your mugs at the side of the counter. Our lattes came creamy, hot, and with classy latte art. The honey graham latte is popular and deliciously sweet, with the notes of honey and graham crackers. Cafe 4 also has some pastry options. If you need to spend some time waiting for something, are looking for peace and quiet for work or study, or want to visit a great and spacious cafe, Cafe 4 fulfills these needs.

4/20/25 Happy Easter
Lee D.

4/20/25 - Happy Easter. Quality/Quantity - We (my daughter) used to hang out here, back in the day. A good huge place to hang out, have coffee, study, etc. Fun and friendly people. A good meeting place. Atmosphere - See above and: Huge location in the church. Plenty of parking, except for Sunday mornings for obvious reasons. Open 6 days a week; see my pictures, Yelp, or their website. Free wifi. Service - See above. Long lines, but it moved fairly quickly. Price - Reasonable and supports the church. Owner Comment - Love your "Meet our Team" on your website! Congrats on your success since 2013.

Almond croissant and iced Americano
Jabez P.

Very nice ambiance located right next to a church/inside? Perfect spot for working/studying. There's plenty of parking and inside seating. I got the almond croissant which was very tasty & rich. Also got an Americano which was pretty good (hard to mess up) Service was nice and overall good experience. IMO one of the better spots to do work in the east bay

Neighborhood Coffee Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Neighborhood Coffee

Hi. Is the cafe for quiet work space only? Would the cafe allow a group of 4 to play mah jong in…

I would say, generally speaking, the cafe is more on the quieter side of environments. Most folks utilize headphones for any outside noise. However, there are often groups working or collaborating. Nonetheless, there may be some outdoor seating…

Can people still sit down after 3:30, but not order the drink? Not sure if the whole place closes...

The gates are open all nite long. You can stay there but it will limited to staff. We hang out there usually till 6

Hi are there extended hours at night during ice skating?

Jennifer, Yes! We will be open 3:30-8:00 with a limited menu.

Do they still have the affogato on the menu?

Hi there, currently we do not but we are hoping to bring it back soon!

Is this cafe a separate entity than the church or do some proceeds support the church?

Will Cafe4 ever go back to the pre-pandemic hours? I really miss hanging out until 6 :(

We really hope so! But for now, we'll be sticking with our 8a-3:30p.

Are you offering indoor seating during this time (Nov 2021)?

Yes! 8a-3:30p Sunday-Friday

Do they serve food for lunch?

Yes - there are a good number of items you can get on the menu at Cafe 4. That also includes during lunchtime.

Are there plans to increase opening hours to evenings and weekends?

We'll be reopening for limited hours this Sunday! Our hours for the time being are Sundays 8a-12p, Monday-Friday 8a-3:30p. =)

Do they allow the use of personal containers for beverages at the moment?

This depends on the drink! If you want to bring in a mug for coffee you're more than welcome! Something like a cappuccino or late proves to be a bit more difficult because we can't take the cup from you. You'll place the cup on the counter and we'll…

Is there still outdoor seating available?

Yes!

Does the WiFi reach outdoor tables?

Yes, it does

Is there any indoor dining at the moment?

Only outdoor seating at the moment.

Is it open with outdoor seating?

Yes! Our outdoor seating is open!

Do you allow service dogs?

Yes! Trained service dogs are allowed inside, all other dogs are allowed on our outdoor patio!

Do i have to pay extra to get the number 4 in my latte?

Hi there! We do latte art on each of our bar drinks (lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, etc.). The 4 design is typically dusted on the top of our Chai in cinnamon and Matcha lattes with matcha powder, but we'd be happy to dust a 4 design in cinnamon on…

I heard the church service takes place Sunday mornings? I really want to study here sundays so what time would be a good time to drop by with less noise and traffic? 12pm maybe?

To be honest, the cafe is consistently busy due to the fact that there are so many people daily that use the wi-fi offered there; the only caveat being they must purchase something from the cafe and they tend to only make one purchase but stay there…

Is the background music loud? Would a group of coworkers conversate easily enough?

It's not loud. There are plenty of seating areas that a group can gather to converse quietly with not much interruption. But the intercom is on when church services are in place.

Do they have gluten free pastors or bagels?

They have some sealed ones from Mariposa Bakery, like the chocolate brownie or lemon bar!

Best time to come in when there's not alot of people?

Midday lunchtime is good when a majority of the students leave to eat

The Castro Valley one is super tiny, no indoor seating and really only enough room for about 2-3 people to line up to order for the inside. It's a bit too tight in there for me. They do mostly Asian inspired pastries, mostly using croissant dough in all kinds of creative shapes and sizes. Even though many things don't fit my preference as I'm not big on savory pastries or ones that have meat in them, they do make some attractive and unique looking pastries. So I get it, why people line up for this. But I have tried several sweet type pastries and here are some notes. Custard Tart ($4/5*) Probably one of the best egg/custard tarts I've ever had. This is one of the simpler things in their display case. This is literally a flaky pastry and a well made custard filling. Most everything else in that display case is 2-3 times bigger and much more going on with fillings and decorations. I like simple pastries so this hit on my sensibilities big time. The custard was smooth and not too sweet, very Asian in sweetness. And the best part was the crust, it was so flaky, light and buttery. 10 times better than any egg tart I've had a Chinese or Portuguese bakery. Almond Danish ($7.50/3.5*) This is one of their more elaborate creations, even tho this is somewhat simpler than many other pastries they have. But this name doesn't really correlate with what I tasted, there is a lot more going on. The pastry part is in the shape of a muffin, but the texture is flaky like a croissant, maybe slightly more dense than a croissant. Then there may be a small amount of almond paste in the middle, but there were a lot more of this coffee cream. This was too big for me to eat in one sitting so I split it in half. It was decent but it definitely isn't an Almond Danish. Lol Strawberry Croffle ($5/5*) I love true Belgian/Liege waffles made with a yeasted dough but cooked til crisp in a cast iron waffle press. Not sure if this is Liege style but it carried a lot of the characteristics of one. Crisp from caramelized sugar being cooked in the exterior, nice chew in the center and garnished simply with a strawberry cream. I could eat this for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Cold Brew ($4.25/3.5*) I didn't love it, but it wasn't bad. It tasted better if drunk with one of their pastries. Alone I wouldn't do it again. But as a companion with a pastry, sure. I'll round to a fiver cuz service is usually pretty nice and efficient. And even tho 75% of the things here are too busy and complicated for me, the simple things I have tried, really schmacks. So a fandom has formed.

This place stood out because it had a lot of reviews and was close to my house. The cafe itself is small, a bit stuffy inside. There is ample parking on the side which was a plus. There were only three customers inside when I arrived. When I walked in, the first thing I was asked was, "What does your dog need" rather than a hello or good morning. I explained that my dog and I were there to order coffee, and I was told the menu was outside and that she would help me at the door. It wasn't necessarily rude, just an unusual interaction. A sign explaining the dog policy might help avoid this awkward situation/confusion in the future. Unfortunately, the coffee was the biggest disappointment. After waiting about 15 minutes, my latte tasted watered down and lacked flavor. The best way I can describe it is that it tasted like warm cardboard. I don't mind waiting for a quality drink, but this one missed the mark. I ended up going home and adding more coffee and milk to make it drinkable. I genuinely wanted to like this place and was excited to try it, but the coffee was a letdown. If you're stopping by before work, be aware that the wait may be longer than expected.

We heard that there had been some long lines recently and that the bread can sell out fast, so he went ahead of me to get in line before they opened, but he said there actually wasn't a line this time. We went on a Sunday afternoon and got two each of the regular and chili oil scallion breads. Once I got to the cafe, I ordered the banana pudding matcha latte. We sat on the bench outside to eat our bread and noticed that it tasted just a *little* like it had been sitting out for a while. I wouldn't describe it as stale, it just didn't have as soft a texture as we expected. However, it tasted absolutely delicious. I'd recommend getting both flavors if you can. The chili oil one wasn't spicy, in my opinion, it just had a kick of chili flavor. The banana pudding matcha latte was a little less successful. The pudding was great, but it just sat on top of the drink. When I mixed it into the matcha, it still wasn't coming through very strong and the drink tasted almost entirely of matcha. It was disappointing because I love banana so much. I think I'd be better off just ordering the banana pudding in the future. I'd like to come back here on a Saturday to see if the bread is a bit fresher, and I'd order the banana pudding rather than the latte.
