I am glad I went into this little cafe! It is soo nice and the barista Daniella was So kind and helpful when choosing our coffee! I got an iced coffee and a hot mexican coffee. I will definitely be back again!

I give this place a solid 3, it's pretty good, I did have to ask for an extra shot of expresso because it wasn't as strong as I like it but it was pretty good I would go back again. Just a heads up no seating and I think they don't open until about 8. Which for a coffee place seems pretty late. Right next to the library so that's pretty cool too. Service was friendly :)

Zocalo Coffee opened where Hippie's Brew once was. Limited eats menu. Usual espresso drinks. Seating outside and inside library, not in service area. Offerings: premade sandwiches, chips, snacks, espressos. Bites: breakfast burrito premade (10) microwaved. -wrapped in flour tortilla. Contains tomato, mushrooms, onions, baked potato, cheese, cilantro, spinach. Didn't taste freshly made. Cheese , 'rooms, tomato taste dominated. Sips: drip coffee (4) -nice bold, medium ish roast. 3.5 stars. Coffee worthy, sandwich not. Quantity/Quantity: covfefe good, sandwich not. Many tables available in library. Street parking possible.

I'm definitely a fan of Zocalo Coffee and had my first avocado toast at their Bancroft location in San Leandro about 8 years ago. I remember how nicely prepared, fresh and delicious along with their other breakfast items and latte. Zocalo Coffee is now located in Downtown Hayward at the Main Library. Smallish cafe with about 4 outdoor bistro tables offering: house-made pastries, quiche, grab-and-go breakfast wraps, herbed chicken salad, and turkey wraps with the usual coffees, lattes, teas and fresh-roasted Zocalo coffee beans. I've visited twice and ordered a latte and creme brulee latte adjusted for less sweetness. I was hoping to get their fresh made biscuits and caneles but sadly (for me) sell out early...not that many spots offer caneles in the East Bay so I'm always in search of... :) Both times Mimi working the counter and always friendly and helpful. Great spot and will return to support this small business. Street parking with garage available nearby.

It's not just amazing vibez I receive from the staff, it's also the latte art . The space is perfect enough to grab a quick bite and still get caffeinated. Thank you Zocalo for coming to Hayward

Eh.. this coffee shop is just whatever. Same layout and feel of the old Hippies Brew except the drinks are different. I had their Mexican spicy mocha which was way too milky and light tasting. It doesn't compare to the other Mexican spicy latte/mochas I've had at other places. Theirs lacks that cayenne spice that burns the throat, the thick rich chocolate mocha taste and texture, and that cinnamon taste. There's not much to choose from. I will say, this is a great addition to the library next door though; people can sip while watching their kids play in the children's sections of the library. I won't be coming back.

The drinks were impeccable! Normally Starbucks puts too much ice to the point were I have two sips of drink, but here the ratio was perfect. Staff were super kind and patient while I was looking at the menu and I didn't at all feel rushed. Though the place is tiny it's very cute! I really enjoyed that I could grab a drink and go into the library.

So happy to see Hayward has a new coffee shop in the downtown area! First time coming today and ordered a creme brulee latte with oat milk. Personally it was not my favorite drink but it wasn't terrible. I would still come back to try something else. Service was also great. They don't have indoor seating in the cafe but some tables/seats available outside.

Not only are the pastries some of the prettiest that I've seen but they're actually quite tasty (and not too sweet either)! Comes in a nice branded box too. Before I rattle off my reviews of the pastries that I tried I'll say that the pastries here, although laminated, have no crisp and are strictly the soft and chewy type (think Costco croissants). I prefer some crisp, but I wouldn't hesitate on returning here to try more things. - French tart: amaaazing egg custard filling. It's so milky it's almost flan-like! - Brownie fruit tart: omg prob one of my fave brownie textures; not fudgy-dry and not too-cake-like either. Nailed the custard filling as well. I'd say my fave pastry in the bunch. - Passion fruit ganache danish: deliciously tart passion fruit filling! - Sweet cheese bowtie: funny enough the sweet cheese reminds me a lot of Cheez Whiz haha (nostalgic for me) but silkier and lighter in taste. The sweet cheese is only in the center of the bowtie. - Ham & cheese: flavorful ham but could've had a little bit more of it. The cheese part tastes similar to the cheese filling in the sweet cheese bowtie. - Ube moon: mad props for ube jam actually being used here instead of just ube extract like at most bakeries that offer ube treats. I will say though that the ube filling is a bit too dense; maybe the ube jam could've been mixed with some custard to make the filling lighter. Only a couple of customers in line when I visited on a Sunday early afternoon and the display case was still more-than-half full. Okay-ish service; the lady at the cashier was primarily focused on quickly completing orders.

Just an excellent place to be!…read more A friend had heard rave reviews about their authentic Argentinian empanadas and we were so happy to come and try it out on a Saturday afternoon. Parking was busy (the lot is shared with Trader Joe's) but we managed to find a spot and head into the busy but not packed cafe. There is a large assortment of empanadas, from meat options like chorizo and chicken, to vegetarian like corn and onion, to sweet options too like apples. The menu also boasts lots of great drinks including mate tea! Lucky us, the empanadas we ordered weren't in stock so we had to wait ~10 for freshly baked ones. They came out buttery and piping hot, even with little hand-stamped letters on them so you know what you're eating, and it was so delicious. Most are about $5.50 each. Add oregano chimichurri for a bit extra if you want or pair with a tea, but these empanadas really hit the snacky spot. Lots of wooden tables with fresh flowers make Pampas a great space to chat with friends or to sit and do some work. The most standout feature was the friendly and efficient staff who seem to build connections with everybody who walks in the door. Worth a drive to Castro Valley! Especially if you bring cash for a 10% discount off a dozen :)

It has the perfect consistency and texture, so it has been on the top of my list to stop by whenever I'm in the area. We stopped by on a Sunday at noon and there were only a few customers inside. It's small but cozy and clean. I wanted to try all of the flavors - regular, chili oil scallion, and corn cheese. The regular was the best out of the other two in my opinion since it was simple but the bread could have been crisper even though it was warmed up. The other two flavors were very oily and too heavy. Glad I finally tried it, but I think I'm just going to stick to their macaroons.

It's in a corner of a very cute gourmet food hall and had a good selection of goods left in mid-afternoon on a weekday. Service is also friendly and prompt. I had to get the kouign amann because I always get one wherever I can, and also picked up a plain croissant, currant scone, and panna cotta. The KA was decent; I would call this one a diet KA because they only put the sugar on one side so it was more like a brulee'd croissant. I also have to admit that, while this shaping is very attractive, the direction of the lamination makes eating this feel like shards in my mouth. However, flavor was excellent. The plain croissant is very plain. It's decent but I've had better. The scone and panna cotta, however, were delightful. Both had lovely soft textures and wonderful creamy flavors. The scone held up for two days and wasn't even a bit stale when I finally had it for breakfast. Highly recommend this tucked-away bakery in the Castro Valley!

Seven Hills Baking Co was my first stop as I haven't had sourdough since childhood. I got their classic sourdough loaf. Even though it wasn't warm anymore it was still amazing. It was quite hard to cut into with a serrated bread knife, which I'm not sure whether that's normal or abnormal for gluten sourdough. However, the inside was lovely and soft. Nice strong sour flavor, spongy dough that was almost moist (not at all dry). I want to note on the gluten free front that seven hills baking co offers a few items which they advertise to be gluten free. Though the ingredients may be gluten free, the items are baked in the same kitchen, the same oven, and then put side by side with the gluten in the display case. Furthermore I don't believe their ingredients are all certified gluten free. Therefore I do not recommend seven hills baking co for anybody with celiac disease. Do not buy your friend with a gluten allergy or celiac these items. There is most certainly cross contact.
