Great little spot off the Coast highway. Pass by it all the time and not knowing what it was until our family tried it the other day for lunch. It was early after just past noon and no one was inside except for one patron at the bar. Walked in and to the right of the door is a model train display of what Pacifica used to look like. Great place to learn about the history. We got seated by a wonderful lady who took us to the back room dining. We were the only ones there at the time. She was very attentive and friendly as well. Did a little small talk while taking our order and once the food came out, she kept checking up to make sure we are okay with everything. Portion size was great and enough for two meals. This is a mom and pop shop, so don't expect anything fancy, they are there to serve the community and making a living for themselves. Our friendly waitress checked on us frequently and the food was amazing!! We were celebrating a birthday, so they put a candle in the fantastic bread pudding that we had for dessert. My friend and I decided to give this place a try when we discovered that one of our go-to restaurants was temporarily closed during COVID-19. The restaurant used to be a train station in the old days, and they have several pictures/models inside the place that depicts what it used to look like. We walked inside a dimly lit restaurant that was adjacent to a bar they have inside the place. To promote distancing, they only offered outdoor seating in their back patio where a handsome ferrell cat rests as you sit and enjoy the pacific breeze. We were recommended to order Crab sandwiches, as this restaurant claims it as its specialty. The crab sandwiches were $24.99 thus on the higher end of pricing. You can get a lobster sandwich at other places for this price! The sandwiches came on sourdough bread with fries and some red onions, lettuce, and pickles. They also give you some grocery-bough hot sauces that actually help enhance the taste of the crab sandwich. The sandwiches were pretty tasty, but the price did not seem to agree. I say hello can I get a table - she asks if I seen someone (a ladies name) outside ? I'm like nope! I just got here I don't know anybody here. She asks if I want to sit at the bar or in the dining area ? I say dining is fine since I have a baby (no common sense) she points to the back so I seat myself. I pick a seat all the way in the back since there was no one there - I wanted to be further from the entrance. As I sit at my table I notice how much dust is all over this place. I look at the windows and mirrors. Stains and crumbs everywhere. I waited about 5 min. I see a lady come in (the only waitress) looks like she just got to work and is running behind. She comes over hands me a menu and asks if I want something to drink I say water is fine. I ask for a high chair. I look at the menu - the prices are for places that match that kind of cost. This place gave me more of the bar on the beach vibe with over priced foods. I went the safe route because I look at their window to the side and see their pet cat ? Nothing against animals but just not cats near the food or dining area. I order a cheeseburger and grilled chicken breast. I get my high chair for baby. Sticky and dirty. I wipe it clean. As I wait for my food I notice all the table cloths are stained and have been flipped over to cover the other side. So much dried food and stains. No wonder the place smelled so stale and just not sanitary. I enjoyed my burger. But I will never come back here. This place needs a deep cleaning and a visit from the health department. The piece of grilled chicken I got was plain, thin and dry. The waitress was quick and prompt the food took about 20 minutes maybe 30? The waitress needed a smoke break while it sat in the order ready window under the lamp. She came back didn't wash hands and brought me my plate with her thumb on my fries. My first and last time here. I hope this review helps them more than anything because it isn't about the food at this point. What a gem! My son loved the model trains in the entrance. We had rib eyes and they were delicious. They have a good kids menu too - my son had chicken tenders and they looked really good. Im a local Pacifican and used to visit this establishment before covid. It was known for a decent Prime Rib dinner. Fast forward to Sept 2023. Wow what a dump this place turned into! Do yourself a favor and stay away, it's empty with no customers for a reason. I walked into the dark bar area that had a stench of old cigarette and booze soaked carpet. You are then teleported back to 1990 via the dining room decor, smelly carpets and chairs on swivel wheels. Flies everywhere landing on your drinks... At this point we realize were the only guests in the restaurant as we are seated. The wait staff takes a seat next to us and swears the crab sandwich is the bomb and French dip sandwich exactly like the prime rib. It was within the breakfast schedule yet they didnt serve breakfast on a weekend. Worse cold canned crab sandwich ever for 38 bucks ? Flavorless French Dip Sandwich...again the French get screwed. $100 later... most unfulfilling meal even at $50. Moral of the story... When you first get that gut feeling to run out the door, do it!. Sorry Vallemar Station, you run your course and need to close down. Turn over the prime location to a business that cares about customer and not just act like a Venus fly trap sucking money from unsuspecting tourists on the coast that happen to walk in. Cool fact: The Vallemar Station was originally built as a train station in 1905 which closed in 1920. The front exterior still resembles its original look from 1905. Not so cool fact: The dining room has flyers posted all over the walls; one notifying customers that they apply a non-cash fee to all purchases paid via a credit or debit card and another asking for all tips to be paid in cash rather than credit card. Not only do the paper postings add to the low class environment, they also demonstrate that the owners are CHEAP business owners who nickel and dime their patrons. Major turn-off. INTERIOR: The family owned restaurant has that small town/country-like feel. The environment is reminiscent of a cottage style eatery in Reno with super outdated furniture (the chairs have wheels at the bottoms of their legs like office seats) and dull decor. The tacky flyers taped to the dining room walls definitely add to the inelegance. SERVICE: I assume that the restaurant owner, Barbara, was the lady sitting at the bar when we arrived. She should try to smile at people if she wants to pretend that she enjoys her job. Aside from our cold welcome, service was fair. FOOD: Not bad; however, I noticed that on their website, they boast that other yelpers have said that "the clam chowder is excellent." Sure, if you like chowder as thin as broth. I would not trust that they have "the best crab sandwich on the coast," either. If you live nearby Pacifica, you don't hear people rave about Vallemar's crab sandwich; Nick's Seafood Restaurant across the street has that claim to fame...because theirs IS excellent! In short, this place is a disappointment on nearly every level. If you are hungry and in the area, go to Nick's across the street instead. Made an impromptu trip to Rockaway Beach on Friday evening, and stopped here for dinner on the way back home. We had French fries (piping hot and crispy!) and Bourbon and ginger ale to start with. For dinner we ordered jumbo prawns with garlic linguini and Cajun catfish with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Both dishes were very fresh and flavorful! Diane our waitress was efficient, and friendly enough when we made conversation. Max and Bryce the two boys who brought us food were funny! Location/Parking: Pacifica off 35; right by Vallemar School, Gorilla BBQ, and Sun Valley Market. Parking in the lot was super easy for dinner Atmosphere: Upon first entering, it definitely gives off comfortable local bar vibes with the older decor and seating. You have to walk through the bar to get to the small 12-ish table dining room seating area in the back. Menu: Lots of American comfort staples! Appetizers include fried bar comfort classics such as fried mushrooms, mozzarella sticks, as well as calamari. There are a good array of sandwich and burger staples, but my family all decided to get steak plates. Price for these steak plates aren't cheap (~$25+) but are pretty good quality, large portions, and comes with sides. Food: My family, of course, ordered lots of food to feast on. The Fried Mushroom starter was nice and crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside--a perfect bar snack! My mom ordered the Steamed Clams, which she LOVED--the clams were fresh, and she slurped them all up herself. I ordered the Teriyaki Skirt Steak and it was a hearty portion, cooked perfectly. It was savory, slightly sweet from the teriyaki, and had a great sear throughout for great flavor. I was also really impressed because the garlicky mashed potatoes were well seasoned, and the creamed spinach was rich, flavorful, and creamy. Service: This restaurant isn't one of the fine-dining service types, but are home to a small group of friendly waiteresses/waiters that are pretty friendly and cater to many local regulars.
