I was really excited about this spot and really wanted to have a great experience here. Unfortunately, I didn't have a great experience and was disappointed - mainly because of the service, the food was overall good. We made reservations for 8:15pm on a Friday night. The hostess was friendly and we were seated right away. The individuals pouring the water and serving the food were also very friendly and on top of everything. Our server was really awkward and the main problem here. He took awhile to come to our table and then we had to keep flagging him own throughout the night. We ordered our food around 8:40pm after flagging him to our table, the food came around 9:40pm and I saw the people who came after us getting their food before us, which was weird. It wasn't super busy at that point so I am not sure why it took so long. The service and the food both took way too long. Our server said sorry for how long the food took but he didn't seem sincere and didn't try to make up for it by taking anything off our bill and it's a pricier spot. When the service/food are this slow, they should take something off the bill or do something to make up for how slow it is. I really liked the cocktail I had, which was the Vajra house cocktail. My bf had the Lassi cocktail, which was okay but was hoping for more of a potent ginger flavor. The cocktails were quite pricy at $14 per cocktail so they should all be great. In terms of the food, the Goan fish curry was incredible. The sauce was complex, extremely flavorful and the fish was sautéed really well. That was the best thing I ate. We also ordered the Tandoori Paneer and the sauce was really good but I think it could have had more of the Tandoori flavor. The cheese naan was good but I was expecting more of a gruyere flavor - I did like the texture though. We ordered a side of dal and I was a bit underwhelmed. It could have been more flavorful as it was under seasoned. The pickled vegetables were quite acidic and tasty - really liked them. So overall, the food was 4/5 and the service was 2/5. read more

Such a great addition to the neighborhood. Jaun made the best drinks we've had in the city. Very unique, creative and outstanding. Nothing like the other places in Chicago. We had the Chesterfield Promontory and the Odyssey to Heaven and Hell, both fantastic. The food was very good. Food is amazing we went there for my sister birthday right before quarantine , so they had a lot of cancellations, so I was expecting better service but the service is painfully slow!!! Longer: Great stuff: -Creamy samosa: pleasure for taste buds -Perfectly done garlic naan: light texture, crispy edge, soft inside -Spicy mango lassi is fireworks -Indian porcelain cocktail not only is served with a flower, has a very pronounced rose taste -Dessert was something like creamy bubble-tea, delicious One more thing: they have Sparrow Coffee in Chemex. I visited the soft opening, there were two logistical questions, however the way management handled that is a great example of how a restaurant should handle certain situations. Also, while they still wait for the alcohol license, the place is BYOB, without a corkage fee. I guess, for me, there should be a mental note - be prepared to have cash when you go to a new place. We got the typical Indian food staples (paneer, butter chicken) although I regret not trying some of their more fusion style twists. My wife and I got the habanero mango lassi which was amazing. Fantastic food, wonderful service. My wife and I went for Valentine's Day for their soft opening and we were personally welcomed by the chef. The momos (Nepalese dumplings) were a highlight. We also got the samosas, chicken tikka masala, fish curry, saag paneer, and garlic naan and all were delicious. The pudding dessert we got was also really good. Considering it was a soft opening and we were prepared for glitches, the service was warm, friendly, and impeccable! We were so well taken care of. I consider this to be the best Indian meal I've had in Chicago, and my table thought no differently. These are the light and bold flavors I crave. I had the Alu Gobhi, which is typically a humble, simple vegetarian dish. Wow- the depth of flavor was insane! Others at the table had the Goan Fish Curry, the Tandoori Quail, and the Lamb Sahi Korma- all of which were perfectly executed. What a fantastic visit. My friends and I do a monthly dinner outing going to either new or restaurants that have become popular that we haven't been too. I've have been waiting to go here for the last few months, and it didn't fail. The only slight downside, if you want to call it that, is the Dahi Bhalla, it lacked flavor and spices that I expect from Indian cuisine. Three of us had the Heritage Goat which was extremely tender and just delicious. The sauce and spices were outstanding. One person had the Lobster Malabar Curry, the sauce overpowered the Lobster because it is so fantastic, but it really tasted great. One person, who loves fish, really wanted the Goan Fish Curry, but alas, they were out. They instead ordered the tandoori chicken, which was great, typical staple on an Indian cuisine menu. The entree that was lack luster, was the Himalayan Chicken. Spices were great but it was dry. The cocktail menu is very interesting, a mixologists dream. I had the "coolest" drink, no pun intended. They pour a cold fog mixture drink over a huge ice cube which was just fun to watch and it was delicious. They have a huge wine list, with many interesting choices. David, our waiter was great. Very attentive, knowledgeable and if I am to be frank, very easy on the eyes. I should say, all of the staff was great, the bus boys were right on point and also very personable. It's definitely not a cheap date kind of place, between 7 people, we all had about 2 drinks each, an entree, two apps and 1 desert and it was about $75 a person. This is an amazing place for the entree! Absolutely authentic. Now comes the bad part - the apps - they look nice but are very bland, do not taste good at all, completely lose the essence of Indian street food. The worst - drinks! They put a huge blob of ice, 50-60% the size of the glass in the middle of the drink. Mind you it is not the floating ice that you see in drinks, it is one GIANT ice sculpture that runs the entire length of the glass. And the drinks are not cheap! Favorite Indian spot in Chicago! They are really friendly, pretty space, and the food is delicious and remarkably lighter than other places. Huge fan. I have been a frequent customer of Cumin and Jaipur for years but this is now my go-to. We ordered the momo, tikka masala, heritage goat, dal makhani, and some garlic naan and every item was noteworthy. The portions were fair enough that we had leftovers which is always appreciated. Also, the mezcal cocktail I had (I forget the name) was great and oddly enough seemed to work well with the cuisine. Long story short, if you're a fan of Indian this is a must try. The best indian food I have had in Chicago. I'm from NYC and been hunting for a good indian place here and I finally found one. The staff and service is excellent. The food is great. The chicken tikka masala was creamy and delicious so was the goat kebabs. There are some items not listed in the menu at the restaurant but are in the delivery menu, so be sure to ask them about those dishes. It's def a must try !!!!! read more

I don't usually like eating Indian food outside of my mom's home-cooked meals, but Vajra exceeded my expectations! My family and I went during their soft opening a couple weeks ago on a Friday night. The place was packed! Although there were no cocktails on the menu, the mocktails were fantastic (try the Magnolia Garden, Mango Habanero Lassi, and the Oriental Zen!), and the 2 bartenders were phenomenal. The manager and waitress were extremely attentive to my family's dietary preferences (my sister is lactose-intolerant and my mother is vegetarian). The food is better shared so that you can try an assortment of foods, and all of it is flavorful. Our favorites were the Original Samosa Chaat, Vegetable Biryani, Prawn Curry, Chicken Classic Curry/Tikka Masala (similar to butter chicken, exactly what I was craving), with Butter and Garlic Naans to top it off. Dessert was complementary and cleansed the palate. Looking forward to ordering some takeout one of these nights and going back to try the cocktails that the bartenders were raving about soon! read more
