    Drop Off Counter - Inside
    Sharon M.

I visit this USPS location frequently because it is close to work. They have metered parking stalls in a small lot on King Street side of the building and the entrance is located on the Richard Street side. This location can be very busy because they are in the downtown area ans very convenient for those that work in the surrounding businesses. There is a kiosk outside on the same side of the entrance along with a parcel only drop box. They do have letter drop boxes on both the King Street and Richard Street sides and they are both drive up. There are a few on the Richard Street side where you can drop off from the sidewalk as well. They also have their drop off only counter inside to the right when you enter. The employees here are nice and helpful. Sometimes when it gets very busy, they have an employee at the door assisting customers and help to make some procedures go faster. If you plan to drop off mail around 9am, it gets busy with all the mail trucks waiting to get their delivery for the day. Sometimes, you can get lucky and there is no line. That's usually when right they open and after the lunch rush, but it can get busy as well...

The US Post Office is located on the right side (Merchant Street side) of this building

Historical Building in Downtown Honolulu... The King David Kalākaua Building is really beautiful with its archways. My mom used to work here many years ago before the Department of Hawaiian Homelands moved to Kapolei. I only visit this building now for the US Postal Service. Usually, I just drop my mail off in the convenient blue drop boxes on the streets. Both Richards Street and Merchant Street have drop boxes! On Saturdays, when the Post Office is closed, mail is picked up by 4:15pm. Sometimes I use the self-service kiosk on the Richards Street side of the building. The self-service kiosk makes mailing packages and buying postage stamps more There is a window open for special pick up of mail (8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday; and 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Monday to Friday) for customers who have mail boxes here. Parking in the lot on Merchant Street is metered. There's also metered street parking which is free on Sundays and holidays. Thanks to the U.S. Postal Service for their efficiency and dependability!

Put my contents in new envelope which I took to post office with postage of $4.45

Outside post office door, an employee has a stand. Post Office is limiting the number of people inside. Employee will ask you about brings you here. I told her that I need postage for my envelope. Once inside, you can go to either of the 2 lines. Employee Hiroshi asked me what was inside my envelope and envelope was based on weight. My 6 x10 inch bubble padded envelope was rejected by 4 possibilities because of the size. Envelope weighed 3.80 oz with cost of $4.65. It will be sent to my high school friend in Pflugerville, TX. A 4 x 6 envelope may have postage of $.51. He also said forever stamps will be $.55 in August. Lesson that I learned is to weigh envelope before maiiling it out.

This building was erected in 1920!

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds"--Herodotus, Histories (8.98) (trans. A. D. Godley, 1924) Let me start by saying that I'm a fan of the services and timely deliveries of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). Yes, I've heard about scandals and employment issues but I don't think that their internal issues have ever affected the quality of service that we've always had. My paternal side of the family who immigrated to Hawai'i in the late 1800s had used the independent Kamehameha V Post Office when it was located at the corner of Bethel and Merchant Streets (current home of the Kumu Kahua Theatre) until this Federal Building with Post Office was built in 1922. Because Hawai'i was still a Territory of the United States and did not gain Statehood until 1959, this "newer" building located at 335 Merchant Street became the administrative seat of the Territory of Hawai'i and Federal Building which held courtrooms and offices for the United States District Court for the District of Hawai'i. Its Mission/Spanish Revival architecture was popular during this era also matches many of our other historic government buildings in Downtown Honolulu, in particular, our Honolulu Hale (Honolulu City & County seat). In 1975, this Merchant Street Post Office was listed on the National Register of Historic Places under its original name of "U.S. Post Office, Customhouse and Courthouse" since it wasn't until 2003 when all of the federal agencies and departments moved to the new Prince Kūhiō Federal Building EXCEPT for the U.S. Post Office due to the sale of this property from the Federal Government to State Government. It was renamed to the "King Kalākaua Building" in honor of King David Kalākaua, last King of the Hawaiian Monarchy and former Postmaster General before ascending to power. Oh, let me get back to this post office which we use for its convenient location to our home, efficient and friendly workers, and enjoy walking into as we feel like we step back in Time. Due to COVID-19 safety guidelines, it is mandatory to wear a face mask when doing business here and social distancing is enforced while you're standing in line waiting for your turn. In years past, we've stood in line to mail our packages and cards during the busy Holiday Season and everyone remained friendly and respectful. Of course, we always make sure to check the Holiday mailing deadlines to ensure timely delivery. There is a metered parking lot fronting this building that is bordered by Richards and Mililani Streets and Merchant and South King Streets. Sorry, I dont know the parking fee because this Post Office is within walking distance from my home. Needless to say, this location is considered to be in our Historic Capitol District so youll also be nearby to the Iolani Palace, King Kamehameha V Judiciary Building, Hawaii Supreme Court, King Kamehameha Statue, and Hawaii State Library. If you drop more coins, you might want to do a bit more exploring of Hawaiis past. I can confidently say that we trust our USPS and hope they'll continue their great services to our Nation and the World.

One of the workers here told me there's a window open from 9-12 on Saturday, but that it's not in the main lobby. Has anyone used this weekend window before? If so, where is it?

The window is right on the Merchant side of the building. If you're parking in the metered lot at 335 Merchant, you're walking right toward it.

Though it's very convenient I really wished that they have the self service kiosk outside as it just doesn't make any sense to have it inside while it's open doesn't do it any justice. Everything is locked up so you need to grab all the boxes and envelops to pack all your items as I searched and searched for a post office but now many are locked up unless you have the code to enter I guess for PO Box holders only. Honolulu locations do close quite early for folks like me how work during the day is the biggest challenge to get there in time to grab my necessities though still won't make it to ship it since everything is locked up once they're closed. Nevertheless love this location but parking is the biggest challenge so it's a love hate relationship I have by getting things shipped on time. Thank you!

I commented to Lance that I was surprised that the line looked like I imagined what it looked like for Christmas and he said that this line was LONGER than it was during the Christmas rush‼ Yikes‼
