I don't often go to post office and send packages. Because of that, I don't know about every details for prices for each and every other carriers there are. But the reason why I choose USPS over others is because it's way cheaper than any other carriers that I've tried and even asked. Usually when I send something, I go for the cheapest but not a package that needs to be sent ASAP. I've remember asking few other carriers and they usually have plans that are only fast and expensive. USPS overall just seems to be the most popular carrier. I'm moving to Japan soon, and had to ship a lot of things back home to my parent's house on the Mainland. This was my first time ever shipping something, and I've heard so many complains about post office experiences from people, so I was a bit concerned with the process. It was super easy to run in to the post office and pick up a couple priority mail boxes. Once I packed up my stuff the same day, all I did was seal them and put my address on them. Once I got back to the post office, there was no line. The guy there was super nice, he just scanned my boxes, I paid, and I got the receipt/tracking code. The whole thing took about 3 minutes total. When I worked downtown I would always pass this post office and mailed stuff from there. My organization also had a PO box there. Old style architecture is really nice. Great customer service. They know you are waiting in line and try to speed up the process. The lines can get very long and parking is hard to find during busy times. The drop off bins are conveniently located. I think people paying their electric bill across the street park in the post office parking which is why it's hard to find parking there. read more

This is such a convenient location for those who work in the downtown area. The lines are always moving and flowing. I think the longest I had to wait was less than 10 minutes. The workers are always friendly and seem to make you feel very welcome. I love coming here for all my postal needs because it is always clean and the staff is friendly. read more

Hmm. I gave them a call and usually they are quite prompt at getting me the information I need. In this last case, I got transferred, and the person starting saying rather bluntly that I'm problematic with my pick ups- Then they shouted "OH S#!@" started laughing, and hung up. I'm sure they thought they were talking to the operator or whoever was helping me, so they were essential talking sh#& about me, TO ME then disconnected my call rather than handing me back to the operator. I understand that my pick ups might be inconvenient, but we mail large volumes of items and if they're not going to pick up, I'm happy to walk down there, but swearing and hanging up is not the way to handle the call. Also, if my pick ups are problematic, TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO rather than gossip about it. This call was a 1 or 2 star at best, but I bring it to 3 since our carrier is nice and every time I go there in person it's rather helpful and quick. read more

I agree- great people and service at this location. They really care and try hard to make the lines move fast and to give you great service. The person who manages this location has great ideas (shout out to Wiki Wiki stand!) and should perhaps be tapped to offer trainings on customer service and line management at other PO's in Honolulu? PSST. LEMME TELL YOU A SECRET. YES, I know it's a post office. YES, the workers there are very nice. YES, it is the only post office in downtown. OK. Forget the Hawaii Five-0 thing. Forget the historic stuff. Because the best, absolutely best thing about this particular post office is this: THE BATHROOM! Enter the notoriously, mysteriously, bathroom-free downtown. AKA "Bathrooms? What bathrooms? We don't have any public bathrooms in downtown...go to McDonald's or the public library. No, I don't care that there are homeless people living in the library bathrooms; you look like you can fight." DIRECTIONS: When you're walking to the post office from the parking lot across the street, you'll see in front of you a blue handicapped sign across the courtyard. Head for the sign, into a central corridor. Walk past the Hearings Office door on your left. Turn to your left, go through a non-descript doorway and walk down the hall. And there, you will find a men's and women's restroom. Large. Clean. Three stalls you can turn around in without hurting yourself. With soap and paper towels, and faucets you're not scared to touch. HOURS: CLOSES WHEN THE POST OFFICE CLOSES. Don't even try afterwards. There are locks. And security *will* engage. Sigh. Relief. Mail done, too. NOW you can get into traffic to the East Side/West Side/Kalakaua Street. Drive aloha...but consider putting down the Monster drink till you're closer to your driveway. Cheers! read more

I've worked at the United States Postal Service during my formidable years in my early 20's and learned how it all works. Nowadays, I use this post office because it's in-between home and work. My home post office is split between Waialae-Kahala and the Kaimuki post offices. While one is in walking distance, the other has the automated postal machine, where you can do almost everything without having the post office being open. I've used this downtown post office more times during the off hours than during work hours, with good reason. Thankful they invented the automated postal kiosk, especially for us people who needs to do postal business outside of normal business hours at the post office, myself included. Most of the time, my needs at this post office are met by buying forever stamps or mail something heavier to friends and family outside of Hawaii. For whatever reason why you use the post office, it's always a neat service that spans for many generations. Getting stuff from here to there takes a lot of work and to be able to spend a fraction of it to get it somewhere is great. While emails and faxes helped bring the postal service down from its former glory from the advent of the Internet, the USPS is always great for those who need to get something here to there. The counter service here is honest, adequate, and positive for the most part. Sometimes, they seem happy with their jobs, other times, they're just going through the motions. This US Postal service location is located in the urban jungle of Honolulu in the outskirts of the downtown business district, right on Merchant Street. It's central location helps many to do their postal mailings whenever they want to, especially when they have that automated postal machine and the package drop box is next to it. Postal mailboxes are on the street, so you can drop those off there. It's kind of neat when you can drive up to the mailbox and stick your hand out and drop it in without getting out of your car. There is metered parking for those doing post office business, since they offer PO Boxes at this location as well. For those of you who are like me, many bus routes come through the area, stopping across the street from the Main Library (traveling eastbound). If going westbound, stop by the State Capitol and walk a few blocks and it will be on your left hand side. I think they do US Passport services too. They accept major credit cards at the counter, as well as the automated postal kiosk, which is always a plus especially with the machine. Postal supply products can be purchased here too, such as packing tape and other packing preparation aids. For what it's worth, the experience with the US postal service is always good, even with the long lines at times, when I get to combine work assignments and can get to the post office during normal business hours. The post office retail itself isn't that large to begin with, but it just feels like a bank in more ways than one. It's organized and very meticulously clean. I do like the air condition at times, although the lack of it stems from all the customers coming and going anyway. No sense having air condition when it's wasted, But banks do that anyway. I usually enjoy my time at the post office, whether it's at the counter with a live person or at the automated machine buying stamps. It's always a neat experience. This is the second time I have gone to this post office. When someone drops off mail I'm always not there to sign for it. I live in the Punch Bowl, so my packages go to the Merchant Street location. The folks behind the window are always awesome in finding my packages and giving them to me. I know I'm using the word "always" a lot! However the customer service is awesome. I do wait a little longer for them to bring my package back from the mail run, but it's worth it. I'd rather wait and get it in person than try to schedule a delivery due to my schedule. Best customer service ever!! The post office is well-ventilated and clean with a big lobby. You wait in line to get your package or other mail service. There are at least 4 folks at the windows. It is also a beautiful and historic place. Parking of course in downtown Honolulu is something you pay for, no surprise here. But other than that, best post office I've been to. read more

For those of you who might be too young to remember, there was once a time before computers/smart phones where you had to write notes to send to a loved one or perhaps write a check to pay a bill and place it in an envelope and send it via the postal service. If you didn't recognize words like "write," "check," "stamp," or "postal service," be sure to google them or read your history book to learn about them. So before the time of computers, we required stamps to place on these envelopes to send documents and had to purchase stamps from a location such as the post office. For anyone who works downtown or in the government district, the main branch off King street is certainly a convenient option to purchase stamps or mail that parcel. There is usually a line, however the staff there are quick to push the line through and the wait times aren't insanely long. However, do plan accordingly if you wanted to make a quick trip in/out. They also feature a self serve kiosk right outside the main branch which makes mailing a package even quicker and more efficient. Parking can be a bit of a challenge, however there is metered parking right off King street in this little lot fronting the complex which is limited to 30 minutes. read more

I'd prefer avoiding most post offices because of their long lines, jammed parking lots, and pricey postage, but if I have to mail something (especially during the holidays) this is usually the one I prefer. They also have the outside automated machine if you have to mail a simple package. Not all the post offices have this. Just pay by card and your postage stamp prints out right there and drop it in the bin. Easy, no wait. If you must speak to a clerk or buy stamps, they are usually pretty quick here (despite the usually long line) and friendly. They are also nicer here than some other post offices. Parking is also metered out front, so not too bad since people are in and out constantly. So on my list of post offices visited, this one ranks higher than the others. read more

What would I do without this post office? Where would I receive my mail? Buy my stamps? Send my Christmas gifts to the mainland? Sure, there are other post offices, but not this one right in the heart of Downtown Honolulu wrapped in historic architecture and history. The staff here are so friendly even when the lines to mail stuff are super long. And, trust me, during the holidays, the lines are ridiculously long. In that case, I will use the self-serve machine outside. I have a P.O. box here as well that makes it easy for me to get my mail during the lunch hour. read more

This is the only post office in the middle of downtown. During lunch the line is really long. During the holiday season, the line comes out the door! If you need to send a package, I recommend using the kiosk outside and paying with your credit card. But if you insist on going inside and mailing your items, I suggest going around 10AM or 3PM. Received EXCELLENT and knowledgeable service from Allan at this post office. I was processing an expedited passport renewal and planned to send it to the mainland. After asking me some questions, he suggested I send it Priority to the local office, which definitely saved time and money for me. After looking over my renewal form, payment, and expired passport, he advised me to write my date of birth on the check and double-checked my renewal form for any errors. 12/6/18 mailing Christmas boxes to Japan. Costly yes but need to do it.. The cost has no factor in this review but it's all about the window postal workers. Allan helped me, what a terrific guy, postal worker he is. Always helpful and smiling. I usually get to see him so this is not just this trip. He makes recommendations on how to save money on my shipping to Japan. He makes conversation. This location really moves the line, the more the line creeps to the door, the more windows open. Same old service from the post office. They seem to have a problem with people covering other routes. They should have the filler carrier study the route before making any gross error during the day. My dad was a postal worker who worked at the old post office and at the airport. With their new computerized system they still make error. This time they forget to deliver on a day and the next day they came at 3 pm. They forget to deliver the midweek on both days. Don't they have information in the computer. I sent a priority mail envelope to Tamuning Guam on 03/17/2011. I tracked it to Honolulu where it arrived 03/20/2011. The tracing number is 03102640 0002 3847 1603. As of today 03/25/2011 the envelope has not arrived in Tamuning Guam. USPS tracking only shows it getting to Honolulu on the 03/20/2011. Where is my package?
