Mailing a letter in Honolulu, Hawaii... This Post Office is in an unusual place... Under the freeway! Yes! Really! I guess they're making good use of the space. The parking lot is right there; and there are more spaces across the street! My visit was on a Thursday afternoon. I was on my way home when I realized that I had an envelope to mail. I took the far left lane and passed everyone waiting in traffic in the next lane. Sorry! Parking was free and easy! I could have stayed in the car and dropped my envelope in the curbside receptacle at the exit, but i wanted to go in and look around. The self-service kiosk comes in handy when you are the Do It Yourself kind of person or come after hours. There were free boxes and envelopes in the corner - ready for mailing! The greeting cards and office supplies were further inside of this post office. Overall, this post office is practical, clean, and spacious. It gets the job done! read more

Here's a place that help push the envelope! This Makiki Post Office does have a love hate issues with many but it's all love from me personally. They do have plenty of parking yes even the one that's the closest to the building even when it's insane there's additional parking across the street. I actually don't come here during hours as the obvious regardless the time of year it can get overwhelming. One reason that I do love this area is that it's rather close from where I live and yes parking if you plan it well is a breeze, it's not one that's locked during closed hours with whatever is needed to access like a few others I've been to. Not sure if anyone else uses them but I do actually prefer to use the self serve kiosk to mail my packages so either way I can get my mail out and I'm able to pick up mailing boxes at anytime. RIPOFF! Re: Makiki Post Office under the H-1 on Lunalilo Street. Zip: 96826. Terrible access and parking. Lousy service. Wonder if anyone else has had similar problems with this post office. Traveling on the Mainland, mailed stuff back home to 96826 to lighten luggage. Took it to a Mainland US post office and paid $66 to the clerk at the counter. Did NOT use the self-service kiosk. On return, I got sick and couldn't get to pick up my mail for a while. When I finally did, all I got were notes saying I needed to pay another $50 to get my package. I was supposed to leave the money in my mailbox and they would deliver it. Sounded fishy. Besides, the deadline had passed to claim it. Are you kidding me? If it cost $116 to mail this package, WHY DIDN'T THE MAINLAND POSTAL CLERK CHARGE ME $116? If it cost that much, would have struggled with heavy luggage. I was in no shape to go argue with them. Besides, getting to that post office is the biggest hassle. Anyone living in that area knows that. The parking lot is minuscule and you often end up idling in the street while tons of traffic, impatiently jockeying to get to the freeway, barrel past. You can't even get through the parking lot to drop a letter in the curbside mailbox. At my age, I cannot walk without pain, so suggestions to park in the empty lot across the street are not an option. Take your life in your hands crossing the street. Never got my package. Don't know what happened to it. Did the employees open it and help themselves? Was it sent off to some unclaimed mail reseller? Wrote a letter to the head postmaster by the airport. Told me to file a claim. Wouldn't even tell me what happens to unclaimed mail. Ridiculous. My property was held for ransom and when I didn't pay their unjustified and ridiculous extra fee, they kept it. The postal service has its financial problems, but is this how they fix it? By ripping off customers? I can replace most of the stuff in that box, but why should I have to? And if I see someone out and about wearing a red Na Mea shirt with black fern print that was a gift from a good friend, I am going to lose it. Reading all the one star reviews, it seems this Makiki post office has a problem with internal theft, missing packages, damaged mail, etc. Just recalled how I ordered a 12 pack of fruit bars from Amazon and got a USPS package that looked like it had been opened. Only ten bars were inside! Another note, when I asked a clerk in another post office what happens to unclaimed mail, she asked me which post office. Before I could answer she asked if it was Makiki! Obviously, Makiki has problems even other post offices know about. But nothing is done. And I have yet to get an answer from anyone I asked in the USPS about what happens to unclaimed mail in the local area. Recommend contacting US Postal Inspectors about this post office whenever you have missing property. If enough complain, maybe something will be done? I'm considering it after reading all these other complaints. Appears I am not alone! read more

Came at 9:15am on a Tuesday morning and there was a short line of around 8 people. The line moved fairly quickly, and there was a worker taking information from each person in line about what we needed at the post office. I told her I was there to just pick up a package and she moved me to the side. I gave her my slip and she returned with my package (ID required for all package pickups). Very smooth and quick process! The parking lot can get pretty crowded fast, but there's a lot right across the street from the post office with LOTS of parking. This is my go to post office! I frequently use the self service automated machine which makes service quick. You can mail boxes and even buy postage. I almost never have to go in and stand in line unless I'm sending something certified mail. Having a PO Box here is also really convenient for me. I've always found the postal workers to be very friendly. The only downside is there isn't much parking in front of the post office, but they do have a second parking lot across the street. I wish more people would utilize this second parking lot instead of blocking traffic. read more

I recently moved and changed my address via the Official USPS Change of Address but somehow they got my Apt. # incorrect. I can see if I handwritten the changes, there might be an misunderstanding. But everything was done electronically. I had all my mail forwarded to one of my neighbors for two weeks and had to go to the nearest P.O. to change the Apt. #. Most of my mail came to me after a week but some still go to my old address. :( read more

I've been extremely frustrated with the delivery policies of this post office. When I lived in a walkup Downtown, the mailman was nice enough to deliver even heavy packages to my door. At the Makiki post office, I've been told by my mailman that his manager does not allow mailmen to go up to individual apartments to leave packages. If this is true, the manager at the Makiki post office must be a jerk because not allowing his workers to leave packages is inconvenient for the elderly, disabled, and those of us without a vehicle. I live in a secure building with an elevator. It takes several additional minutes to leave a package. Instead, I always get a phone call while I'm at work on a weekday. I continuously state that I work Monday through Friday and won't be home to accept packages. The mailman then tells me to pick up my package at the post office. I don't have a car which isn't conducive to picking up heavy packages. Also, the post office is closed by the time I get home from work. I'm only available to go to the post office on Saturdays, and if not, I'm out of luck for another week. Again, I never had this problem when I was being delivered mail by the post office Downtown. Either the manager in charge of making these decisions is incompetent and uncaring about his customers, or the mailmen don't want to go that extra mile to make deliveries more convenient. Either way, it's frustrating and there is no way I'll ever give this post office a five star rating. read more

This post office can either be a nightmare or blessing depending on who you ask. For me, I love this location because it's convenient and close to home (without having to go all the way to Ala Moana, downtown, or into Manoa). It's a pretty standard post office if you ask me but, what I love most is that everyone working here always seems to be in a good mood and is always willing to help field any silly questions I might have. Quick, friendly, and efficient, what's not to love?! This location also has a fair assortment of packaging supplies, cards, and envelopes to purchase which I also love considering I always seem to run out of packing tape when I need it most. This location also has a self-service machine for shipping things where you can print/ship your boxes and even buy stamps from. I personally prefer paying at the counter with a human versus a machine, but if you're looking for a quick, in-and-out alternative, they have one there! The parking lot can be a nightmare considering it has maybe 8 stalls at most out front but, thankfully this post office has a lot across the street with TONS of spaces available. read more

Horrible customer service! These ladies both represent the worst service USPS can provide. I can't believe how unwilling she was to help get me flat rate boxes. The line was out the door since before 4pm, they close at 4:30. They don't allow anymore to go out after 4:30pm which I'm okay with, but all I needed to be better prepared doe them tomorrow is the free flat rate boxes they provide and she literally pushed me out of the store saying she had to count her money. This is my neighborhood post office so at times I have to come here to pick up signed packages when I'm not home to receive. They have will call hours from 6am to 9am. After that you go to the counter. This is located near the freeway on ramp so always a busy area. Parking in front of the post office is limited to about 10 or 12 stalls, a few being handicapped parking. Most of the time, they are filled and you wait for the next available stall. At times when it is busy, you are waiting on Lunalilo with your signal light waiting to turn into the lot. There is a larger lot across the street in the ewa direction. I went to pick up two packages. The line was literally out the door. Expected for it being December. All four counters had someone working pretty efficiently. Someone that wasn't behind the counter came through the line and pulled out everyone that was picking up a package, since we didn't need to go to the counter for that service. Was a nice way to expedite the line. I must have waited for about 10 minutes as they searched for my packages. I guess one had gone missing and fell behind the shelf. At one point there was three of them looking and they were very apologetic for the wait. The team there was really nice and even with the line, they kept their cool and offered each customer all services and options. read more

What a difference a mile makes! I'm guessing its the local manager! Whatever it is, there is a 180 degree difference in attitude and customer service Postal worker walking the line "picking up? Or just stamps?"... I suspect this is done in effort to manage the line of customers; attempting to alleviate the wait time just to buy a stamp, or just to pick up a parcel. That said, the rest of us need to patiently wait in the line to get your mail stamped and metered. 4 stations all open and running. Pleasant workers behind the counter (AND THEY SPEAK ENGLISH!!! THANK GOODNESS) and follow through on their script once you're to the counter. The script is 1) how are you today? 2) how can I help you today? 3) do you need anything else? 4) Have a great day. They have a wall full of post office boxes for rent. They also have the self service meter machine in the lobby for those who want to get in and out of the post office. Tons of supplies sit at the door entrance for your use and taking. One down side is the egress/ingress to the post office is horrible. One way in and that is through Lunalilo Street under the freeway or down Pensacola street. Due to it's overly convenient location, everyone (and their neighbors) choose to utilize this branch on a daily basis, which makes traffic miserable for everyone. Lunalilo Street and Pensacola are always backed up as it is because of it being the on-ramp of choice for townies, but also because of the line to the parking lot for the post office. For some reason people don't want to cross the street from their adjacent parking lot, so they all just line up and hover waiting for a stall directly outside of the post office. Then once you're in, you are either in line for the self service kiosk behind someone using it for the very first time or a long line for one of their few tellers just beaming with joy to service you. NOT. All I can advise is to either suck it up and find parking in their adjacent lot or to avoid this branch at all costs. read more

This is one of the ugliest Post Offices I've ever been to, but don't let looks fool you! Situated literally underneath the H1 between two support pillars, I wonder if this location was a matter of choice or necessity. It certainly doesn't take up any valuable real estate. The location makes it a little tricky to get to; the easiest way is to go mauka on Piikoi, the PO has its own lane on the road, which leads you directly to the parking. The tricky part is the sheer volume of traffic that uses these same roads as an entrance to the H1. Parking is usually plentiful once you get here. The only way to exit is to go makai on Pensacola. The post office itself is dated and old, but is kept clean and organized. The private boxes are in the main lobby, with the service counters on their own room to the right. The staff here is very friendly, helpful, and efficient; I have yet to have a negative experience here. They still have kiosks to display stamps and other products, but none look like they've been used this decade. If you're picking up a package, try to come early; they have a separate window that opens before the main one just for package pickup, just knock. read more

Please people! Park across the street!! I can't emphasize this enough! Countless times I have gotten stuck behind people trying to park in the parking lot here when it is full. They just wait and wait and wait till someone goes back to their car and leaves. I get irritated because I just want to get home. I live so close and this is my route home. If you look carefully, there's a clearly labelled sign mentioning additional parking across the street. And that parking lot is almost always half empty! Stop holding up traffic and being lazy and park there! Alas, onto my review =D I go to many post offices because I ship a lot of packages. I like this post office a lot because it is so close to me. I can walk here with ease. What makes things really convenient is the Automated Postal Centers which are self-service kiosks. They are really helpful with printing postage, paying for PO Boxes, and buying stamps. Open almost all the time, it makes doing business at the post office very easy. Another plus is 24/7 PO Box access, shipping supplies readily available all the time, and a will call window to pick up packages. The employees that I have dealt with have always been nice and professional. read more

If I could leave zero stars I would. I was basically attacked physically while on crutches today by the supervisor Selina Siasoi ! I was following up on a claim about a missing package. She was not only rude and unprofessional unhelpful and racist. Now I don't say this with a light heart. My family had worked for the post office for years my grandfather 40 yrs my uncle 35 years. I buy stamps I never use I order to support them. I video taped the entire incident. Them taped her completely act different with the other customer that did not look like me. I file an official complaint with the manager and the district manager. I plan on speaking to the commissioner as well ! read more

Nicely placed under the freeway and conveniently in the Makiki area, this is the one I go to for most things. It does get busy during the lunch time, so be patient if you go during that time. If you can, try in the morning when they just open. If you just picking up, you can do that during their Will Call hours, before opening. That's convenient. read more

This is not directed at any one individual or any one post office, but rather their system itself. You remember how in the past, you had priority and express. In the past, priority was guaranteed 3-4 day delivery. We the Post Office has quietly faded that into memory. Thus, you will pay a premium of "priority," while receiving absolutely no benefit at all for any service. Instead, you will pay extra for soemthing snaling along like first class. I sent soemthing on Friday, 11/13 via priority, and it is now Tuesday, and still shows it in transit 4 days later (and still several states away). So I paid $8.00 for something I could have sent with about $1.50 in stamps. Now, it will not get there in time. The other option is their "Priority Express," which costs about $27.00. Just remember any time, the USPO goes to Congress begging for money, we get no bang for the buck. Use other options. read more

I am so disappointed in the US Postal Carrier Service Hawaii. In the last month alone I have had the following. 1. Mail left at a different house. 2. Mail "undeliverable" to my mailbox where i get mail every day, 3. a lost a package that i have been trying to find for the last MONTH. 4. Paid to send a package overnight and it took over a week to get to the mainland. and i could go on!!!! Although the people at my local post office are fantastic the carrier I have and the systems are now horrible. I used to love the US Postal Service and had a lot of respect for them and there people. Being a business owner, I understand that this has to do with the Administration running the service not doing there job for a long time. Its no different than our political system. Dear Mr. Postman, I confess, I've been delaying mailing off a package for a few days just because I dread the task of "going to the post office" Yeah, you know, trying to get a spot, waiting in line, watching people look completely lost and confused and, well, you know, the whole task. So when I told my friend I would get her stuff "sent right away" my normal response..."well, ya know, da boat, it's da boat"! But today, Mr. Postman/ Post Office, you're all right in my book! Today was a great day...I can't speak for tomorrow or the next time we meet, but today, it was painless and for that I thank you! Sincerely, Me In all honesty, I had low expectations and knew as I was driving up Piikoi street that I better pack my patience panties and just know it was gonna be a task to get it done. Well, low an behold, as I drive in there's actually a few open parking spots. Mind you, it was at 9:14am on a weekday, but hey, I was already grinning! Then I walk into the counter and there was only 1 person in line. Ok, Universe, I came prepared and you're totally spoofing me because I "have all day" to get this menial task done instead of those days when I need it done in less than 5 minutes! The lady at counter was super cool and answered all my questions, took care of my package and yeah, you bet I basically skipped right outta there because I was done in 6.5 minutes flat!! Yay me and yay Lunalilo Street Post Office. Just an F.Y.I.---If you happen to go on a Monday morning, day after a holiday or even a Saturday morning...yeah, I can't say you will have the same experience I just had because, afterall, it is the post office and people are always there and stuffs gotta get mailed and picked up. That poor post office under the main highway with about 8 parking spots is such a horrible location but what can you do? Often I've seen people wait in the turning lane just to get in. So beware, of the time and day. Sometimes you just get lucky and sometimes you just gotta hold tight. Here is what I am upset about... I have lived near this post office for years. I walk by the post office often. There are tons of traffic problems. People just don't know how to park or drive when it comes to an odd shaped parking lot and different kind of road situation that has 2 left turn lanes and one goes into the post office. There are tons of honking horns and angry other drivers. I thought that the side parking lot was only for post office employees. I have never seen a sign clear to drivers hat there is a lot across the street. If it was clearer- say way before the intersection - then cars could get in a different lane and then park in the side parking lot and not clog up the small parking lot. I know too that people are lazy and just want to run in and get in and out- the problem is that this is a busy post office generally. The parking lot infront is very small. Just a few cars only on an small incline. There is a need since there are the drive by mail boxes for drop off so some cars need to go through. There are very few open windows with post men working the windows. The line is just small so then there are usually many people waiting outside the door trying to get into the office because so many people are in line at the busy times. The place really could be bigger for the number of people that go there. They also changed the hours- shortening them to before 5 pm. That is crazy. It is really busy and can handle more hours understandably but I digress. The location is good that it is close enough to near downtown to be convenient instead of going to downtown. It is right by H1 so on the way for many. It uses land that would otherwise be less useful as it is under H1. There are mail boxes and it is open 24 hrs that mail can be dropped off safely and out of the rain and is safe. There is a machine that can put postage on packages after hours- it is like a computer that can think and do most things. But unfortunately it is broken more often than working. I know other older folks are not able to use it - as I see people making mess up s and not able to do what they want to do. read more

Just a head's up... Parking can be difficult to find especially during peak hours. The entrance to get in is through Lunanlilo and you might have to wait a while if you're driving since it's right next to the freeway entrance. Like the previous Yelpers have mentioned, it's better to park somewhere closeby and just walk over. Since I only live a few blocks away, it's not such a hassle :) Came here on a Tuesday afternoon to drop off a few packages and had no problems. Guy at the counter had a smile on his face and was very friendly. I don't think I spent more than 10 minutes inside. While I was waiting in line, I noticed another worker that was putting packages and mail away- all of the back of the office stuff, but as soon as he saw the line start to build he jumped on to one of the counters to help out. The workers really do their best to make sure there's a steady flow going and you don't end up waiting longer than you have to. By the way, if you need to do any passport services make sure you book an appointment! Sometimes, the passport people aren't there and don't do walk-ins. read more
