First time trying Urbe and was very excited. The place looks cool. We got there about 20 minutes before our reservation but seated right away. The good. Sangria was excellent almost spicy. We ordered the chicharrones as an appetizer and my partner ordered something else. I ordered carnitas and everything was delicious. The service.... Wow we did a lot of waiting. A runner brought out our mains before our appetizers. No check back by anyone. No refills on drinks. Wasn't asked if we wanted to order more drinks. We sat for 20 Minutes with an empty table and weren't asked about dessert. We had to flag down someone to ask for the check. Service was a bummer. Maybe it was an off night. There were other dishes I would like to try so we will give it another shot but for the prices- seriously need to up the game. I know places are understaffed but then maybe close off a section? Delicious Mexican street food at Urbe has me planning my next visit already. Tried their pulpo (octopus) tacos. Came in three corn tortillas, generous amount of tender chargrilled octopus. They also gave a side of smokey red salsa, and lime wedges. Delicious, and filling! The roasted plantain was almost like a dessert. Huge portion, with goat cheese, creme, and crunchy plantain crisps. The elote was SO good! Perfectly seasoned, and presentation was so inviting. Loved it! The Wagyu urbe burger was juicy, and we added a fried egg to give it an extra creaminess to it. Came with generous slices of avocado, and the potato wedges were scrumptious with some more creamy goat cheese. I was pretty pleased to try it because I usually avoid burgers, but this one was yummy. Also, had their almond croissant, tres leches, bread of death with vanilla orange filling. All three were balanced, fragrant, delicious, and something I also ordered to go! The restaurant itself was huge in terms of layout. You order your food at the counter during breakfast and lunch hours. During dinner they provide full service where they come and take your order. A friend & I came here on a Saturday at 1pm. It was super busy and we were able to get a spot at the bar. The artwork was gorgeous & music was nice. Went here for the first time on NYE. The ticket was $85 plus gratuity which I thought was steep but I wanted to go with some family members. You got 4 cocktails with your ticket which ended up being more than enough, with the tequila shot they passed out! We came here on New Years Day, and it was counter service which I don't think is the norm. We ordered from our phones which makes it hard to get your appetizers then your entree. We went to the bar to get our drinks or we'd have to wait until they brought it with our food. We weren't impressed, our son didn't like his quesadilla or the rice that came with it, which is what he typically orders at every other Mexican Restaurant we go to. Everything needed salt, flavoring, etc. There was little to no flavor on most of the food and if you aren't coming here for drinks, I'm not sure I'd bother to come. The F.Queso was decent the meat had some flavor but like I said not enough to come back. I had the Waking in Tulum and it had enough liquor and flavor was good. What a great find! I came here with conference attendees for a post conference meal and drinks. Urbe didn't disappoint! The drinks were outstanding and the food as well. We had a flight of cocktails that was brought to our table as a matter of fact several rounds of them were ordered and I think they were five or six brought to our table. I'm a big mojito fan and those mojitos were excellent. While we were drinking our drinks we ordered some appetizers, chips and salsa and the salsa was excellent even though it had quite a kick to it. We also ordered this pork rind dish with salsa and guacamole. Though I'm not terribly a big pork rind fan the appetizer was good and especially tasty with the guac. Afterwards we kind of ordered our meals at varying times. I asked for recommendations because I typically like a good, hardy ceviche! What a great recommendation! It was tasty and had a great flavor to it and was brought with some warm chips. Our wait staff, was outstanding. It helped that some of the people who were with us are regulars there and knew many of the wait staff directly by name. All in all we had a wonderful meal. Urbe had some fire cauliflower tacos! I started off with the elote. It was light on the salt but overall a good starter. For my main course, I had the Coliflor Tacos off the vegan/ vegetarian menu. The pineapples and pickled onions inside the tacos was truly a perfect compliment to the red sauce the cauliflower was marinated in. It was a bit spicy for me but I couldn't stop eating it! I personally loved the fact that they have a full separate vegan and vegetarian menu filled with appetizing options. And finally, I ended the night with the Capirotada (bread pudding) with caramel ice cream for dessert. The caramel ice cream was actually the perfect pairing for this dessert vs. vanilla. My order of Chicken Enchiladas and takeout Churros were very delicious, authentic and good quality. The enchiladas were very fresh with tender chicken, good cheese and a green sauce that was tangy, savory and salty in flavors. The enchiladas were prepped very nicely and very soft. I could taste the exotic blend of aromas without them being too greasy or overly salty. The refried black beans n Mexican rice were great n seasoned very well. The churros were the best churros I have had so far with a great crisp, plenty of sugar on the outer coating, along with two very tasty dipping sauces. We decided to check out Urbe for a Houston Restaurant Week lunch. I had a feeling I was going to love this place just because it is another one of Hugo Ortega's creations. The theme of this restaurant is Mexican street food. It is located in the trendy Uptown Park area close to the Galleria. Though it's a "street food" establishment, the place itself and the vibes has an upscale feeling. We arrived right when they opened and were seated immediately. I don't know how it is during dinner, but at lunch it is counter service. You order and they bring it to your table. We started off with a couple of refreshing drinks. When they brought our drinks, they also brought us a watermelon salad on the house. This was very tasty and a perfect summer dish. Not all the tables got it, so we felt special. For my entrée, I got the Huarache. This was a masa cake, topped with carnitas, black beans and all kinds of other goodness. This dish was very filling and so delicious. The carnitas were tender and full of flavor. The masa cake was soft, yet had that nice crisp on the outside. All the toppings worked in harmony to create the perfect bite. I also got a side of Papas Bravas and Platanos Rostizados because it just sounded great. Turns out they tasted great too. My dining companion got the same entrée but the veg option and that even tasted good. We were full and satisfied but saved some room for our dessert. We went with the Pastel de Chocolate which was a chocolate mousse cake. You can not go wrong with this dish! It was perfect, not too sweet or heavy. Get it! Clean Latin cafeteria style place with counter service for lunch. Here's what we ordered: Street corn (elote)--incredible! They don't skimp on the aioli/cheese/Tajín topping! Ceviche--the olives are a nice twist but I personally don't like olives lol Tacos de Birria--3 delicious tacos, but very oily! They even give you a cup of soupy "dip" which adds to the flavor but also the oily consistency. Make sure not to wear any white while consuming this dish, or just be super careful! Ha! Bol Mexicano with chicken--one of the healthiest dishes you can get here. The chicken was freshly chargrilled. Love the way they cook the cactus and sweet potato. The goat cheese is totally unnecessary in my opinion (and I LOVE goat cheese!); they should've just added sour cream instead, or nothing at all. We gotta make some noise for that brisket queso!!! So good I had to order it twice. The best thing about Texas is you can get some bomb brisket at a Mexican restaurant. In Houston for work and a coworker recommended this restaurant. It's not your typical Tex-Mex it's more authentic Mexican dining. The space is nice, open and modern, and very welcoming. I had a pork dish and my friend had mole chicken. He reported the chicken was on the high side of pretty good. The pork was just pretty good... maybe the highlight on my plate was the black rice. We got some chips and guacamole, too and... good, not great. It is hard to write a review these days without saying somewhere, "It is really expensive.." That definitely applies here. Hugo Ortega never fails to disappoint with his restaurant. Albeit not as renowned as Xochi, his concept of Urbe - a Mexican street food restaurant - shines brightly with his elevated presentations. The gorditas had perfectly cooked carnitas accompanied by a bright and light salsa verde. Even its wrapper, something that is often overlooked in gorditas, burritos, and tacos, was nailed and is good enough to eat on its own. The tlayuda had an exceptional balance of crust, topped with al pastor, a non-overwhelming amount of cheese, and fresh arugula to give it texture and cut its richness. Its pecho de res tacos had an exceptionally smoked brisket, a tasty chili sauce made from blitzed dried peppers, and freshly made tortillas. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in the Galleria area, and one of my fav Mexican places! There are great places for street Mexican food, but Urbe gives it a lil' bit of an upscale, hipster flare (which is definitely reflected in the higher prices). Everything always tastes so fresh and flavorful, and I never miss an opportunity to visit for lunch when I can. If you're a little adventurous, the octopus tacos are my absolute favorite and are cooked to tender perfection. We also always get the sweet potato and elotes, both of which are pretty good (though not the best elotes I've had in Houston.)
