Our group of six came for Sunday brunch and left disappointed due to poor communication & service. I work in the service industry and value transparency, especially with pricing. From the start, the owner made me move my car from an unmarked spot, setting a bad tone before I even walked in. When our group came in, the staff seemed overwhelmed with our party size, even though it wasn't busy. I asked for water but was given a tiny cup while others with sodas had full glasses. When I requested the same, I got a medium mason jar which was still not equal. I don't drink sodas and felt less than just because I wanted water. The main issue was ordering our food of barbacoa tacos. My friend and I wanted just one taco each, as we had other lunch plans to go to and the server said okay when we each ordered just one taco. However, she came back to tell us we had to "share a plate" without any mention of price or portion size. The owner had to have told her something because she seemed fine on just a single taco when she took our order. By the time the food came, we were shocked when a full pound of barbacoa arrived, and even more shocked by the $35 charge! Which was almost double to what others paid for full plates. That was the most expensive plate on the breakfast menu. No one warned us about this! Keep in mind that some of the other breakfast tacos that were on the menu were no more than $6 per Taco. This is mainly about the principle having to share a full plate with more food than what was asked for without any transparency. The server then told us that they could not do a single tacos of barabaco and it was also because of the "time that we ordered it." Smh She then complained to our other friend, as if we didn't wanna pay at all, which was never the case and Our other friend just ended up paying it on his tab. Which was never even supposed to happen! We are very disappointed to say the least and will not be coming back. It was very quiet when we walked in, not a bad thing. The prices were a little steep :/ I got chilaquiles and paid about 20 dollars. I could tell that they had homemade and fried the tortilla chips so that was nice! But adding any protein was an upcharge of at least $3... I thought that chilaquiles traditionally come with at least eggs, but that was still (2.75) upcharge. The starting price was like 16.99 or something. I don't mind paying extra, but I feel like, for what it was, it was a little pricey. I feel like staring price shouldve been $10-$12. Went there for the first time as I see it when I'm on N. Shepherd. Here's my take. Parking is tricky; you have to back out to a busy street. That can be dangerous. The food well, here it goes; I ordered two tacos one with chorizo and potato and one with carnitas (roast pork) on a corn tortilla. Mind you, not a regular tortilla but those tiny ones. The carnitas taco was delicious but the chorizo and potato was very salty. Not to mention that they were tiny tacos at over $4.00 each. I asked the server if they had plain roasted potatoes: I figured I could add potatoes and lessen the saltiness. To my surprise, he said they don't have sides of any kind of potatoes. What? In a Mexican restaurant? Everyone serves potatoes!!!!! Your food is not bad you're just bad at business and overvalue your product. try to take an objective view of your food and prices. Is your food and ambiance really better than Hugo's? Also good to know that you think your neighbor next door, Tio Trompo, is feeding people "chemicals not fit for human consumption". Man this place is so insanely expensive and parking is weird. I feel like restaurants are using food costs to disproportionately jack up their food prices (quick to rise, slow to fall). Consumers are tired of this crap and are starting to push back across all businesses. If you take a walk down an aisle at HEB you'll see permanent price cuts on at least half of the items. Businesses still griping about "2020" are either out of touch, getting ripped off by their suppliers, or just straight up lying to their customers. This place has decent food but you can go LITERALLY across the street to Tio Trompo and get authentic mexican food at a fraction of the cost. The prices are expensive, the building is next to a busy street, and the small parking lot is a hot mess. Ok, now that I got those out of the way, let's taco bout the food. I ordered the fish taco dish. It's $17.50 for two tacos (as of Aug 2023). It doesn't include rice or beans, but instead some sauce elegantly poured across the vast empty side of the plate to let you know you aren't dining at Torchy's. I must say though, the flavors don't mess around! If you enjoy fish tacos, this is a must. If you want something more substantial but still full of flavor, I recommend Chilaquiles with fried eggs. Luckily, my wife didn't finish hers and I was able to try - it's delicious! Service was friendly, especially the person who sells the merchandise. He has a genuine smile and look of care. He walked us to our table, helped setup the kids chairs, and made sure we were welcomed. Would I want to come back? Polanquito is an authentic, chef-driven Mexican restaurant. Again, it's Mexican cuisine - not Tex-Mex, not New Mex, not Americanized Mex... it's *authentic* Mexican fare from different regions of Mexico. The flavors, the menu, and the entire dining experience offers diners a little taste of Mexico. I found Polanquito thanks to Yelp; I was craving chilaquiles and did a quick search on Yelp and read about their chilaquiles and mole chilaquiles. And they serve brunch until 4pm. As soon as we walked in, we noticed most (if not all) of the customers that day were Spanish-speaking; futbol was on the TV; the music playlist was perfecto - we knew this was going to be an authentic Mexican brunch experience. And it was. The chilaquiles are a must. I opted for the salsa verde (tangy and spicy!), but asked if I could taste the mole in consideration for next time. Mole has many definitive types, and everyone has their preference depending on where they grew up, who made it for them... all the variables... but the black mole (mole negro) the server brought out for me to sample exceeded my expectations. We also ordered crudatitos to start, some Topo Chico, and agua de jamaica. There were only a few disappointments during our experience. The side of black beans accompanying the chilaquiles was no larger than a tablespoon dollop. Big disappointment because I love frijoles, and they really aren't an expensive item to skimp on. :( And though the crudites were refreshing (sliced cucumber, pineapple, and jicama) it was also $9 for nine slices. Overall, this is a really good restaurant and I'm glad to see a business doing so well in this building. If you're a native Houstonian, you've seen so many small businesses come and go in this spot, but Polanquito certainly has a very happy customer base and delivers a great product. The atmosphere here was so cute! Service was amazing! Everyone was very kind and attentive. Unfortunately, the flavors for the meat were lacking. I do not see myself returning to this restaurant. Prices are also very expensive for what is being given to you on your plate. Parking was pretty full (but I think that's a good thing for them!) We ordered horchata and Jamaica as our first drinks and they were so good! Cochinita Torta : bread was good, meat was missing some flavor which made it a bit difficult to eat. This was a tasty carryout adventure not too far from my mother-in-law's house during a recent visit. One of my favorite things to do while in Houston is enjoy breakfasts from around the world (because they have 'em all here). During this particular carryout adventure we feasted on chicharrones, pulled pork sandwiches, horchatta lattes, and "Mexican eggs" with refried black beans. The Mexican eggs were scrambled with pico de Gallo mixed in. The food was all delicious and the space itself was cute (very colorful and fun). It appeared that they also offered some delicious pulled pork carryout options for group/family orders. The only bummer of our experience was that the staff wasn't very friendly and the horchatta latte was a little disappointing. I tend to gravitate to restaurants carved in the model of an old home. That homely atmosphere tends to make the experience more tasteful. Plus, Polanquito is family-owned and ran, exactly what I was looking for. The homemade Pork Cracklings with guacamole was so delicious and a unique twist in terms of an appetizer.
