Got into town on Sunday and had difficulty finding somewhere serving in restaurant rather than cur St service due to Corona. The place was busy, but we waited only about 15 minutes to be seated. All the staff were friendly and efficient. I had the eggs Benedict and hubby had the stuffed French toast. My eggs were perfectly done. The French toast was different than expected, but tasted good with the fresh fruit adding a nice flavor. We especially appreciated the fact our waters were kept full as we were outside in a very warm day. All the food that we saw brought out looked so good we Dec we will need to return again read more

Today my family went to their restaurant and waited about 2 hours to get seated. We were 4 adults and 1 child. Family bigger then us got seated first even after coming after us. I myself went up to the desk and asked them how long the wait and he said "checks are on the table so as soon as we have one open".. I went back to my sit and waited. Finally after another 30 minutes my dad went up, THE OWNER HIMSELF was at the desk had the audacity to raise his voice at my dad. We have never been so disrespected. We were regular customers at uptown kitchen. DISCRIMINATING my family. NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN!!!! OWNER IS DISGUSTING!!!! ... I wouldn't even give the one star. We were there for over 90 minutes with a 3 year old toddler... who wouldn't lose their shit after being told multiple times "it's almost ready" and then waiting for 30 minutes. read more

As far as Midwest goes, there's not much choice when it comes to healthy, lean vegetarian and Gluten Free choices. You can easily guess by my rating that Uptown Kitchen has passed in terms of those expectations. I've eaten here on many an occasion--times with people I enjoyed, and times with people I detested. And yet, the food shone through enough to make even the most uncomfortable social venture worthwhile. That's saying something, considering I could unabashedly ignore my human company and engage in my meal, one-on-one, one-hundred percent (there really ARE sandwiches that are more interesting than the person sitting across from you). My experience has always been highlighted by the fact that I can get so many gluten free options without the fear of being "glutened" (details NOT disclosed). Finally, to the point: every meal I've gotten has tasted wonderful, for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. I wouldn't say I've gone home dreaming about each and every one, but the quality and flavor is consistent to deserve 5 stars. I'm not expecting to be punched with the prospect of finding a new favorite (or even a new menu item) every time I come by; that's a tall order. But the options are many, the quality is omnipresent throughout each item, and the flavor and creativity--essential characteristics--are all there. As for desserts, I can't say I've been wowed by the gluten free options. The truffles are tasty; cake is okay. I realize GF desserts are a tricky science, so I will be fair and say the desserts are edible and they don't taste bad, but they aren't fantastic. I suppose I should just be happy they exist here in the first place. Decor is eclectic, but not too bossy. It doesn't demand one's attention constantly, nor does it bore. The surroundings are thankfully not flooded with blinding fluorescent lights, yet it's not so dark that you can't read the menu; a nice balance that doesn't induce headaches. All dining areas, even during a lunch rush, are spacious and clean. I prefer eating near the kitchen because I enjoy watching the hustle and bustle, but anywhere is comfortable. Of course, some days may be more busy and hectic than others, but get over yourself if you think you can be the center of attention at any given moment; it's a restaurant with other diners, and you aren't the Queen of England. If you haven't gotten attention within a reasonable amount of time, wave down any waiter/waitress! Even the dour-looking ones will assist you. For those complaining about cost: stick to your chemically concocted burritos and burgers from chains. You've been feeding into the notion that affordable means a quick, present food fix, over and over and over. Try affording the long term effects of your choices, then revisit your review and reconsider whether its warranted. A $35-$45 (maybe even $50 if you get frills and refills) brunch or lunch for 2-3 people at Uptown Kitchen on occasion is not something reserved for "rich folk"; it's completely feasible, and for the quality, quite proportionate. As for me, I'll be back. I only wish the restaurant was open more often for dinner. I know the Mark exists for dinner but.... Uptown is my favorite. read more

This place was a decent and affordable brunch option in the South Bend area. I went for a large celebration brunch with friends and they were very accommodating of our large group. It was my first time, so I ordered the stuffed French toast on recommendation of several of my friends. I got the challah bread with chocolate hazelnut and strawberries. When I did receive my French toast I was shocked because it was not really a "stuffed" French toast, but more of a French toast sandwich. The chocolate hazelnut spread was just smeared in between the two pieces of French toast. While it was good, it was disappointing to say the least. So, if you do try the stuffed French toast, know that it is not really stuffed. Overall, it was a good experience. They handled the large group well, the service was timely and even though my order wasn't what I expected the food was tasty. If I ever need a breakfast or brunch option, Uptown Kitchen is on my list. read more

My child was between fruit and toast and once he heard what type of fruit was in it he picked toast. The waitress heard me say he only really likes strawberries and grapes. She said oh we can do all strawberries. Ok go for it. Got our bill and there was a up charge of $3 making it $7 for fruit!!! I don't know how this place has 4 stars. 20 minute wait for someone to even bring water, food order was wrong and we only ordered burgers plus it took almost an hour and a half to get it. Once we informed management of our situation a small ratty man in a button up and gold chain came over and stared at us like it was our fault the order was wrong and took so long to get. He offered no compensation or even say sorry. They even knew there was an issue because once we said something the ratty dbag and a man in a sweater vest started working in the kitchen and they still got another complaint from a different table. For my main dish I ordered some ridiculously high-priced chicken breast, which was an itty-bitty, shitty-gritty slab of meat made up of mostly grizzle. It came with a few (literally, a few) green beans and that was it. My husband and I left this place so damn hungry and poor. There really is no need to over-charge for poor-quality meat. Please, before serving something, make the cook inspect the meat before giving it to a paying customer. That grizzle was uncalled for. I've been a loyal customer since Uptown's first day and must agree with most reviews that the food is great, fresh, consistent and the atmosphere is pleasant, as are most of the staff. My only issue with Uptown, surprisingly is that I am more comfortable when the owner is not there. I don't know if it is because I am a person of color, but time and time again I feel like a second class citizen there and never feel quite sure that my patronage is wanted based on the difference in the way I've noticed how he greets, talks to and checks in with certain clients. In contrast, even though I am pleasant and frequent Uptown often, he will avoid eye contact or brush me off to gush at other clients. Surprisingly poor service marred our experience for a recent weekend lunch. I had heard great things prior to going, so I was kind of looking forward to it. 'Thank god we made a reservation', I thought, as we walked in; they looked quite busy and it seemed like trainee day at the host stand. We were seated after about a 5min wait, so that wasn't a problem. Once we were seated, our server took awhile to appear...not good. When I asked for the beer list (no printed one) the server knew three including the special that was written on the menu and said she'd go inside and doublecheck...and didn't come back for 15 minutes. Not good. She came back out with everyone else's drinks, asked if I was ready to order my beer yet (duh), and then rambled through three names of beers and kind of trailed off...not good. Hard to order a beer if the server can't tell you what there is! So I order ine, she takes the newly sat adjacent tables drink order, and promptly comes back with theirs and then mine a few minutes later. Not good. She spilled a few things but hey, it was windy that day, she mixed up some orders (subbing in pricier items!), but hey they're busy, we had to ask for butter for someone's toast and syrup for someone's pancakes, but hey, uh, I'm running out of excuses. We were clearly finished for ages before we were asked about the check, and after we asked it to be split in two (double date) it took another 15 min to get the check which included us watching her take the order of a very large group that had just been sat while holding onto our checks! Aside from all of the us-rolling-our-eyes-at-each-other service, the food was pretty good and the prices reasonable (for people used to city prices). Make-your-own omelet was good as were the pancakes. Also bonus points for seeing Mike Brey there, but hey, I can't change my rating for that. I give Uptown 2 stars because of the service. My friend and I came in for lunch. Because we are over 21, they sat us in the bar. This wouldn't have been a problem if they hadn't sat us at a tiny table! When our food came, there wasn't enough room on the table for my salad and 1/2 sandwich nor my friend's soup, soda, and pancakes. After getting my sandwich, I asked for mayo which never arrived. When I asked another passing server for my mayo, he delivered it and somehow became our waiter as he assisted us for the duration of our meal. We finished our meal with a piece of Red Velvet cake. The cake was very dry and didn't taste good. We would have been better skipping dessert altogether. I probably won't come back. I'm glad that SB has some nicer places in town but I don't think I'll come back here again. read more

This place USED to be my favorite weekend breakfast cafe, then about a year ago the food preparation and portions changed, not sure if they changed chefs, but it was not a positive. Now presently the ONLY reason I gave this place another chance was the Ethiopian coffee was fantastic. Came in this morning to find THAT changed and now they only serve one type that is extremely bold and is like chewing on coffee grinds. I'm done, no more chances.
