I really like this place. Healthy choices and a hip atmosphere. I have been several times and had great service each time. My mother n law is a bit of snob and I took her here when she came to visit. She was impressed. Trust me that is monumental. I like that the new location has less noise. If I have to complain, I am not fond of the seating. The material used on the lime green bench seats makes you feel as if you are glued to the seat. Also the low back makes one feel they need to hunch forward. Leaving the glasses on the tables is not impressive looking because the water is horrible here and leaves spots on on everything. read more

I travel quite a bit for work and consequently do a bit of dining out. Recently, as a means of dealing with health complaints, found my way to something called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Essentially, the diet is an elimination diet that aims to improve gastrointestinal health (along with other areas of health). What makes this diet unique is that it removes grains, starches and most sugars. Add that to an already pre-existing issue with dairy and one can only imagine the difficulty in finding food one does not specifically prepare. Doing some research, I came across Uptown Kitchen and sent an email to inquire about items on the menu that fit the bill or could be adapted to suit my needs. Less than 24 hours later, I got my response. I was assured that not only could they accommodate me, but that such consideration to food sensitivities were a part of their practice. When I came in, I was warmly greeted and sat at an exquisite looking table (I enjoyed the decor very much). When my server came, I let her know what I was looking to accomplish. Even though my intent was to contact the restaurant ahead of time in order to save the server from making multiple trips to the kitchen, this ended up happening. The server was very knowledgeable and did an excellent job of helping me find food on the menu. Unfortunately, because this diet is rare, and I'm new to it, there still was some occasional doubt. My server gladly went back several times. She picked up on what I was hoping to eat and what I was willing to settle for and went out of her way to find a way to deliver what I hoped for. For me, this was an exemplary service as I have Asperger's and this tends to leave me often too shy to ask so much of others (despite being the customer). All too often I simply accept less than what I want out of hesitancy to simply ask. My server, and the preceding conversation before had made the task of sticking to my rigid dietary restrictions that much easier--and this was the first time I asked a server to go out of their way for me. I have to say I was disappointed as I have often been told this a great place to go. For what we paid the options were limited. We were there for breakfast which is supposed to be a hearty meal. Most places feed you well and I was looking forward to some eggs, bacon, and pancakes. No such luck; unless you order al a carte and are willing to pay for it. The pancake portion would have been fine if I could have had the sides, but they were not cooked all the way through and were very doughy, also if you don't enjoy powdered sugar on your cakes let them know ahead. I don't recall seeing that they came with powdered sugar on the menu. However, I cannot forgive the menu advertisement of thick cut bacon; I get thicker cut bacon on a Burger King burger. With all of the great local options I can get to cook on my own griddle, a restaurant had better make good on their bacon claims. Coffee was great! I usually give a place a couple tries, but will have to be strongly convinced to come back. read more

This place is fantastic! I stumbled upon uptown kitchen by accident as my girlfriend and I randomly decided to check out the new shopping complex in granger one weekend, and now I think its the best restaurant in the area. A few key things make uptown kitchen great. 1) the food: really quality ingredients, a constantly evolving menu, and solid presentation all help make the food top notch all the time. The owner stopped by to talk and let us know that this may be the only restaurant in the area has has NO MICROWAVE, NO HEAT LAMPS and NO FRYER! Nonetheless, out food was perfect temperacture and made right to order. Unbelievable! 2) The service: The service at this place is arguably one of the best experiences I have had at a restaurant in my life. How many places can claim that the owner comes by your table, tells you about all the menu items and how they came to be, and even tells a lot about himself and his family (for example: the brisket recipe is actually his mother's, and he's originally from chicago but moved to indiana because of his wife). The regular staff is also extremely polite and knowledgeable, but the owner makes this place special. I would go here over most any place in the whole South Bend, Mishawaka, or Granger area. read more

My sister in law's father (you do the math) recommended this place to us while we were in town for the wedding, and I couldn't stop raving about it. The food is upscale American but not so sophisticated enough that my parents (who like their food simple) couldn't find something to eat. We came for lunch - I had the lunch burrito. The Uptown Kitchen is a great stop if you are in South Bend for a Notre Dame visit. We were first timers who came for a recent Notre Dame event and needed a breakfast option. The Uptown Kitchen met all my needs with a great GF breakfast. I ordered the pancakes. Others in my group ordered the stuffed French Toast which is really special. I think that should be the default setting for our next visit. Great presentation. Great taste. YUM. Even though a football weekend, very good service. It's pretty sad when the best thing you can say about a restaurant is that they have free wifi. Hostess had a rude attitude -- yes I was a single at 11am on a Saturday, but no one was waiting and all she offered was the overstuffed bar or the dining bar overlooking the kitchen. Had the chicken hash for breakfast and it was tasteless -- for $10 breakfast I'd expect better -- would have been a major upgrade to go to Bob Evans. Won't be back. read more

I love me some Uptown Kitchen. I was at ND for five years, and Uptown was my brunch staple throughout. The manager is SO NICE and always comes around to make sure you are enjoying your meal. The wait staff is always very nice too. Not to mention that all of the food is fresh and reasonably priced. I can honestly say that I have never had a bad dish at Uptown. It was so nice to have a progressive menu in the South Bend area. I love their coffee, and was not shy about trying their specials because they were always very good. If you are coming for Sunday brunch it can get a bit crowded, so be prepared for a wait (11-12 seems to be the rush time). read more

I used to live near this place when it first opened and watched it evolve. This place had the smarts and the knack to always keep it simple and nail it on whatever they made. I went back 2 weeks ago, and this was my first trip since they have relocated, and all I have to say is wow. Still a simple menu, and every single thing on it I am sure would have been amazing. I had a burger and sweet potato fries, my Date had the chicken sandwich and green bean fries ( i had told her that when I used to eat there the chicken was always really tender and juicy, and this time was no exception ) everything we had was cooked perfect, presented perfect and the service was great, as I had always remembered. with the Green bean fries came a chipotle mayo-ish type sauce and it was amazing as well, our server boxed up what we had left of that as well...and topped the sauce off for us too! they had a pretty good beer selection and wine selection. I am pretty good with my money and feel that for the quality and atmosphere this place is more than reasonable....2 meals, 2 drinks, out the door with tip around 50 bucks. there are cheaper places...and way more expensive, this place falls right above the middle and earns every dollar you give them with all they do. So glad i made the trip back to Granger to try this place out again. I will definitely be back! read more

I was very disappointed. I ordered 2 fresh squeezed orange juices to go that was clearly not fresh squeezed. Watched the girl open a jug of high pulp juice. I was in the Heritage Square Plaza and decided to go to Uptown Kitchen for a late morning breakfast. It was really a disappointment. I ordered eggs cooked over easy, bacon cooked crisp, potatoes and toast. The potatoes were okay (nothing special) but the eggs were cooked hard with hardened overcook edges and the two pieces bacon was barely cooked and limp. Any cook should be able to cook basic eggs and bacon the way the customer orders them. It was pretty obvious he either didn't read the order carefully or just didn't care. My bill came to $ 13.99 so with the tip it was $16.00 for a basic average breakfast that wasn't even cooked like I ordered. I definitely will not be back. read more

We're huge fans of Uptown Kitchen. We visit the area every summer, and always make sure to eat here as many times as possible. The menu is great, and the service is always excellent. My favorites are the Breakfast Burrito and the quiche, but whenever I've branched out to the brunch specials, they've been delicious too. Looking forward to our next trip! read more

My Mom lives in the area and had heard about this place... she wanted to go for a while so we stopped in over a recent visit. Being from Sothern Ca., I have pretty high expectations for any vegan/vegetarian/healthy/fresh, bla... bla... bla... shops and their offerings. After loading ourselves with Kumas Corner and Italian Beef in Chicago, we were in need of some greens and freshness. This place was really good. Atmosphere is bright, clean and cheerful (extra points in Winter I'm sure). We started with the Hummus platter - 2 Stars (I love hummus... eat it a lot, flavor was missing, it was bland. It is homemade and maybe was just off that day... ) Salads - 4 Stars super yummy homemade dressings, very good variety of fresh ingredients (would have been a perfect 5 but one salad was covered in raw red onions - WAY over bearing), chicken sandwich - 4 Stars (good flavor/bread), veggie burger - 4.5 Stars (homemade, fresh, tasty, good bread), caprese sandwich - 4.5 stars (the tapenade was awesome and made the sandwich, bread was yummy) Excellent local beer selection - 5 Stars Service -5 Stars (prompt, checked in when we need him and stayed on top of our drinks, but didn't bug us) Overall - I would be a regular if I were in the area. Our first visit for breakfast. The kids each got blueberry pancakes that were quickly devoured. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy. He said it's the best he's ever had. My order was gluten free waffles with blueberry compote. YUM! We ordered for the kids first then decided on our order. Everything quickly arrived at the same time. Who'd a thunk that I could come back to South Bend and actually be able to eat vegan food? I was born and raised in SBN, and I'm glad to see the improvements in the dining scene since I left. I went with some friends when I was back in town over the holidays and had the roasted cauliflower sandwich, which was great, though the portion was a wee small for the price (for SBN at least). I also had the veggie chili. All veggie and vegan options are clearly marked, but be sure to let them know you're a vegan, as some of the items marked as vegan actually need to be veganized (e.g., I had them hold the mayo and had vegan bread instead of the challah on the menu). One of my friends had the roasted garlic tofu. She said it was a little bland as is, but she asked for some dressing which made it much tastier. Another friend had a pizza, which was way too big for one person. They even had a vegan cake for dessert, but sadly I didn't notice it until we had paid our bill and were heading out the door. I think it's a great addition to the area, and a place that I could easily dine at whenever I'm back in town. read more

Super friendly service! We found this place on Yelp looking for a good veggie burger after picking up our daughter from a soccer camp at Notre Dame. We did get our meals to go, so the experience may be a little skewed. The owner encouraged us to eat in, but we had to get on the road. However, the place seemed to have an inviting atmosphere. The to-go boxes were conveniently labeled and it was all neatly put together. The food was delicious! My family ordered veggie burgers, a red bean & quinoa burger, and breakfast food (pancakes and eggs). The burgers were huge and "meaty", making them very filling.
