My first experience was very positive. Went for take out on a Friday night (E. Brainerd Road), and the place was packed and with more people waiting for tables. The line to place take out orders was 5-6 deep, but it moved rapidly. Order was completed within 15 minutes and was still hot when I got home with it. Catfish was some of the best I've ever had and enough to feed two people with one order. We were very pleased with the food and service. We will certainly become regular customers. As for the one star reviews, I find it interesting that two of the three the people didn't actually eat there. Yep, that's right I'm a local. Uncle Larry's on MartinLuthertheKingBoulevard is the real deal. Looking for that old school hot fish sandwich. You know the one. White bread, hot sauce pickle. Just do it. Get the white beans on the side like ya momma told ya. Of course it's carry out. You can eat there, but just roll way with your bag full of goodies or sit on the street at the tiny tables perfect for that sidewalk. After a long day of looking at huge catfish, crabs, and many more at the aquarium, our family was hungry for catfish! Easily parked in the street on a Saturday evening, sat at a booth and ordered the family platter. I believe it came with 10 fried catfish filets which were hot, crispy, fresh, divine! Along with two sides and we ordered two more extra, this was more than enough for a party of 4. They have their own pepper vinegar which was perfect on the greens. Wonderful down home restaurant with among the friendliest servers and cooks I remember encountering. It has a nice selection of seafood prepared country style. I will never forget my first visit just over eight or nine years ago. The restaurant at that time reminded me of my Grandma's kitchen... nothing matched. Very soon after being seated one of the "staff" came out, greeted us and started chatting with us as if we were neighbors or long lost relatives. I have always been a "fish fan" and I was pleasantly suprised to see whiting on the menu. As a poor kid, I grew up on whiting... I loved it back then and I love it today. My first meal that day was whiting (cajun style), greens and white beans. The meal was absolutely perfect and I have ordered that same meal almost every time I've been to Uncle Larry's. I have never been disappointed... I generally order the large serving so I have fish to take home for a sandwich or two the next day. Don't let the looks of this place keep you away. Some of the best catfish I've ever had. We both had the catfish meals with sides. Everything was great and cooked perfectly! If you are in the Chattanooga area, Uncle Larry's is a staple that you have to try. It's a small restaurant but the service is great and the food comes out fast and hot. This place arguably has the best fried green tomatoes I've ever had (I can't choose between theirs and my moms). I'm not a big catfish eater but there's was really good and seasoned well. The interior is fairly modest, and you are always greeted and invited to take a seat. All the food is great, but here are my go-to items: Catfish Plate: Two GIGANTIC fillets of catfish are perfectly fried and crispy. You get two sides and a choice of bread or hush puppies. For another 50 cents, I always add the Cajun spice. Hush Puppies: I've never had a piece of bread here, because I am in love with the hush puppies! They are small, crispy, and tasty! Fried Okra: The fried okra is a crunchy addition to anything you have at Uncle Larry's. They are always golden brown, perfect for dipping in a ton of hot sauce or eating on their own. Sandwiches: If you are looking for a smaller meal (but still want to be full to the brim!), try a sandwich. They are delicious, and you won't need anything else to make a whole meal. Knew we were on to something when we asked at the front desk and dude's head started going up and down like a bobblehead doll on steroids. Personable staff. I believe this is the best catfish that has crossed these lips. Cooked to perfection. Light and delicate. I got one with Cajun seasoning and one with lemon pepper. My wife and I decided to stop here for lunch ( i.e. on Friday September 9th) after a lengthy drive to the Chattanooga area. We initially placed our order to go but decided to dine in the restaurant when our entrees were ready. I order the catfish sandwich while the wifey ordered the shrimp dinner. The shrimp was pretty good however the sides (fries and okra) were not hot nor tasty. The catfish sandwich was not good at all as the breading had separated from the fish. In addition, the catfish did not taste fresh. I did not finish the sandwich. The soap dispensers in the restrooms empty and the restrooms were not clean. The issue was communicated to the young lady at the counter but based on our observation was not addressed while we were there. We also noticed the two employees working at that time were talking on the phone for most of the time we were there. Employers should not allow personal phone conversations when employees interact with customers. The employee's main focus should be attending customers who patronize the establishment. read more

I really enjoyed my meal of fried fish, greens, and pinto beans. The beans were really delightful. My only knock was that it was a fairly long wait for our food to be cooked. Walked in and was instantly welcomed by an extremely nice guy who said he was uncle Larry's son. He took time to discuss the menu and options, really cares about our experience. I had the catfish, my daughter had the tilapia and my wife ordered chicken. First both fish dishes were very good, however more importantly, they ran out of chicken. The way the approaches the matter was great and very thoughtful. My wife substituted with the pork chops which brought back memories of fried pork chops we had as kids. Oh my goodness! My momma was born in southern Alabama and my daddy was from northern Florida. I was raised on southern food from fried catfish to hushpuppies to collard and turnip greens. Uncle Larry's does them as well as any I've ever had. Tyrone and Uncle Larry were both there today. My wife had the catfish, fried green tomatoes, coleslaw, cucumber salad and hushpuppies. I had whitefish, turnip greens, fried okra and hushpuppies. They have a kinda pink dipping sauce that is a little spicy but VERY good. There is some malt vinegar that was great on the greens! Just terrific! Everything was fresh, cooked perfectly and piping hot. Very personable staff took great care of us. Cajun Tilapia was delicious and more than I could finish...and that is a rare thing indeed. Fried okra was best I ever had, same for the collard greens. They have couple if TVs tuned to sports events. It's clearly a neighborhood institution based on all the friendly greetings exchanged. AND they deliver now! My only quibble was that all of the dishes were a bit salty for my taste. Next time, and there will be one, I'll ask if they can hold off a bit. read more
