Came here on a whim, based on previous reviews, and were pleasantly surprised. We ordered over the phone and the order was ready in 10 minutes and piping hot! I shared the variety platter with Cajun spice with white bread, hush puppies, fried okra, and a small side of the collard greens. All of it was just delicious and you can tell it was made fresh to order. The fried coating on the fish was crunchy and pepper-y and the fish in the inside was soft and moist. The hush puppies were awesome dipped in the sauce that you get with your order...I just wish there were more than 3!!! And the fried okra was tender but crisp on the outside! Uncle Larry's is the local joint on the corner that may not look like a lot from the outside or inside- but it's the food and overall character that results in five stars in my book. It felt like a barbershop when I walked in to order my lunch, two locals were chatting about the iconic Muhammad Ali photo hung up on the wall. I walked out with a Catfish plate (cajun style) that was prepared perfectly: fried but light and crisp, not heavy with a delightful cajun heat. The crinkle-cut fries and coleslaw rounded the meal well, the hush puppies are the side to note: biting into them there was a really nice cornbread texture that makes them stand out from the norm. My first time in Chattanooga and this place didn't disappoint. My Lyft driver recommended it and so glad I went. Uncle Larry's was the welcoming to the city I was hoping for. The waitress Keisha was so pleasant, made great suggestions and truly showed she cared about her job and the business. I split the catfish platter and pork chop platter with a friend. We chose the lemon pepper seasoning for the fish. The tagline "Fish so good it will smack you" was definitely true! It came out piping hot, flavorful and delicious! We got the Cajun pork chops. Not too spicy but soooo good! The cucumber salad helped balance the meal and the fried green tomatoes were just as pictured and fantastic. The hush puppies were a great addition. Love this place. One of the few that has several types of fish that can be fried. I had the fried tilapia basket. It was 5 large filets fried with hush puppies. The pups were small but tasted great. What I was more amazed with was the excellent service. Around 4 different people working and all were nice and kept checking on me and keeping tea filled. Truly the nicest people who love their work. Quite possibly the BEST catfish I have ever had! Staff was friendly and service was excellent! I wish I had tried the macaroni and cheese but I wanted a slice of the key lime cake which did not disappoint. The hush puppies were also amazing. Ya, that's a craving sure to be satisfied here at UL. Our sides were fries, okra, greens and coleslaw. All were good and tasted good. We both enjoyed the homemade coleslaw best I think. We also ordered a few extra hush puppies because we knew leftovers were in the forecast;) To end the feast we order a peach cobbler and blackberry cobbler w/ ice cream. We got there near closing but Uncle Larry's son got our food promptly and gave us two pieces of strawberry cake and drinks as they were out of a few items. Next time we come for lunch. I loved the cucumber and tomato salad and the slaw but my husband just concentrated in fried catfish and fries ( they looked rather typical). I picked this place purely for the lulz. My brother is named Larry and I wanted to be able to send him a picture of the place so we can laugh about it. This was the best idea I've had in awhile because Uncle Larry's was delicious. I went with two other friends and they decided that I get to pick all the new places because we all loved the food and the atmosphere. Our waitress was lovely and personable. Everyone that we talked to was warm and welcoming. As we were there plenty of people came in and out picking up orders and each one was greeted like family. There's not much on the menu but the things we had were delicious. All of us got the catfish plate and it's the best catfish I've ever had. I'm not that big a fan of catfish but I'm so glad I tried it. It was so good. It came with a sauce they make that I can't remember the name of (smack em?) and it was really good but I absolutely loved their tartar sauce. They apparently make it in house and it was the best tartar sauce. I wish I could buy it in the store. I had the baked beans and cucumber tomato salad, both so good. One friend had baked beans and onion rings and the other had pasta salad and the cucumber tomato salad. None of us finished our food. The catfish was two huge filets and all of us only ate one. I'm not sure how we've never been to Uncle Larry's before now, but we fixed that issue immediately. On our first few visits (had to make up for lost time!!), we ordered tilapia plates with onion rings, hush puppies, fried okra, Cole slaw, and white beans. It's best to try all the sides to give them all a fair shake, but unfortunately, the mac & cheese is always sold out. Obviously that means it's good and we need to come earlier! The desserts look homemade and amazing but we haven't tried those yet. Also, the amount of food you get for the price is such a fabulous deal. Shrimp- fat, fine and fantastic. Sides? Yes please- white beans had solid flavor. Okra and fries were very good, however just a little less hot than perfection. Dessert? They were out of banana puddin' which means it was probably the fan favorite. So, we had some blueberry and peach cobbler which sent us into a dreamy food coma haze filled with visions of sweet delight! That was some mighty fine cobbler. We loved this fish fry! My boyfriend said it was one of his favorite meals during our week long roadtrip down south, crossing Tennessee, Alabama and North Carolina. I got the fried catfish with cajun seasoning, it was perfectly cooked, crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The turnip greens were some of the best I ever had, they cook it down until tender. The hush puppies, fried okra and fried green tomatoes were also yummy and not greasy. So. Good. I've had my fair share of southern comfort food (I'm originally from Virginia) as well as fish and chips. And Uncle Larry's is the best of both worlds. The breading was perfectly crispy and not overwhelming. It added just enough flavor to bring out the fish. Do yourselves a favor and get the smack em sauce. I was amazed that my second piece of fish was still piping hot after I ate the first. Now that's some FRESH hot fish. I tried one piece Cajun and one original. I preferred the original but my boyfriend loved the Cajun. I also got the fried okra. I'm usually not a huge okra fan, but both the texture and the flavor were perfect.
