We were sat when we came in despite it being busy. Waiter was prompt, drinks, food as well. Every was delicious. Had carnitas tacos. Meat was a little dry but wasn't bad. I see most reviews commented on service but ours was prompt and courteous. I enjoyed it. Food is something you might think of home cooked (made at home) which had a nice feel. Me and my boyfriend went for a nice little date one night, and I don't know if it was intentional, but they had us sit beside the restroom, which I kind of mind - because I was there on a date and I kind of felt embarrassed- but I also don't want to be one of those rude people who asks to be sat somewhere but then again, it was a little packed, so maybe that's why. It never really bothered me that much until my boyfriend brought it up since he claimed that we were put there because he wore "raggedy clothes" that night (old shirt and ripped jeans). As for the atmosphere, it was packed, which is good since it was early dinner time. The restaurant was clean on the dining grounds; however, because of being sat next to the restroom, and people going in and out, I can't help noticing that there was a sheet or two of toilet paper on the floor of the men's restroom. It really catches my attention as people walk in and out of there. Neither of us had to go to the restroom so I can't really judge if it was clean or not, all I know is that sheet of toilet paper on the floor staring at me. For the food, I gave it an 8/10 because I was very hungry and everything looked, tasted, and smelled good to me. My boyfriend, who is accustomed to Mexican taste, gave it a sad 2/10. I was kind of surprised because when it comes to food, he is really easy to impress. I'm pretty sure it was because of the setting we were sat at that he was grumpy about it. Either way, I still thought it was good. Kinda pricey and needed more than 4 or 5 (I can't remember) tortillas for a platter for two, because I remember that we had food left and just ate it straight without tortillas (I should know because I can never close my tortillas since I put too much in it). The server was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, which I loved; however, she took quite some time before she got to us for the first time. I even joked with my boyfriend saying, "wanna go? We already have our glasses of waters" because they probably didn't notice us (again, because we were near the restrooms). As an honest reviewer, I don't tend to be biased, I just write what's on my mind and how I felt during the meal. A few weeks ago my wife an I tried a new BWW off 99 and saw Uncle Julio's making a note to try it in the future. Yesterday, we stopped in for lunch and we were amazed at the quality of the food and service. We are so tired of average salsa and chips and are now addicted to Uncle Julio's awesome salsa and thin chips - best we've had in Houston area. My wife's pulled chicken quesadilla and my Tex-Mex mix platter were outstanding. Our server, Patrice, was engaging, timely and entertaining exceeding our needs. She ensured that we were signed up for the UJ's reward program and we can't wait to try our free table side guacamole on our next visit. Worst dining experience encountered to date. Went there on a Saturday about two weeks ago. Surprisingly, the joint wasn't too busy for 7:30 pm. Sat at the bar which we normally do. About half of the seats were empty. Waited almost 20 minutes before we were asked for drink order. Talk about feeling invisible. The watery lame salsa which tasted like a can of tomato juice along with a basket of stale chips were brought. Finally, drinks arrived and we asked for another bowl of salsa/chips which never came. The couple next to us were complaining to the bar waitress deaf ears on their food order. We decided to order the guacamole, queso dip and chicken fajitas. The margaritas were good while we sipped and waited 30 min. for our food. I ordered another marg while the wife ordered the dessert she favors at Uncle Julio's. When the food arrived, chicken fajitas were burnt and tasted horrible. The guacamole was okay, the queso was cold and rubbery. Then the entertainment happened. The bar staff were arguing right in front of us for unknown reasons. Heated argument between two bar members became three when another got involved. Talk about being unprofessional among the worst bar service to date. Our dessert never came after inquiring about it from the bar waitress from hell which she could have cared less. We observed a good number of employees standing around shooting the breeze instead of taking care of the customers. Reflection of poor management. Never again at this location. read more

Lots of reviews complaining about the service followed by apologies and promises from management to take them seriously and fix it. Well, it's not being fixed. Arrived at 2pm on Friday, well after the lunch rush. Three manager-types posted at the hostess stand probably discussing their crappy Yelp rating. Posted up at the bar and was immediately hit with the smell of bar scum - that nasty smell when an establishment doesn't keep the bar clean. I thought this place was new? Only one bartender working the three bar tables, the other 8 people sitting at the bar and the service bar. He was in the weeds from the minute I walked in until I left. Ordered queso - which is really damn good at Uncle Julio's - and the beef enchiladas. The food is typical Tex-Mex somewhere between El Tiempo or Lupe Tortillas. No complaints about the food whatsoever. When the food runner delivered my food, I had to ask for a silverware set up. Instead of getting it herself, she barks at the bartender to get me one and of course he was in the weeds so I sat there for a while waiting for utensils to eat my food. Bartender might be partially to blame - he should ask for help. Fixing the bad service issue is really simple ... the managers need to be out on the floor assessing the service. Any good manager would have taken one look at the bar and quickly figured out the bartender was in the weeds. Empty drink glasses, no silverware in front of guests, people holding their credit cards because they're ready to payout and the general perturbed look on people's faces should be big hints. Went there today with some girlfriends for brunch, and let me just make it clear some locations do offer a brunch menu but this location DOES NOT. The manager was trying to accommodate us by offering to add an egg to any dish for us if we would like. EGGS do not = brunch. Anyway. A friend of mine asked for a dish that is available online but not at this location and they did make it for her. so they will do some things but not others so it's worth a shot to ask for your favorite dish. Chips and salsa were brought out. The salsa does have a distinct Smokey taste to it that is peculiar but pleasing. I asked for the fish tacos a la cart and without tortillas since I am doing keto. The price was exactly the same for the 'A LA CART' as it would have been had I asked for the sides, which hindsight I should have done and brought them home to hubby or offered them to someone else at the table. When I did receive my tacos, I would have thought the restaurant would have had enough common sense to sub out the tortillas with lettuce keeping them "tacos" and not brought out a salad for me. The flavor of the dish wasn't anything out of the ordinary and the fish was kind of dry. We did have a party of 8 but I wasn't too impressed with the service either. First of all the place is a straight up attempt at a Pappasito's knock-off. They try and make the same salsa, same type of chips, have a tortilla station and the waiters even dress the part. However this is NOT Pappasitos in comparison to quality/portion/price. As far as our experience here today. We took our daughter as a reward for her Honor Roll knowing they had a dessert called the Chocolate Piñata (more on that in a bit). The wait wasn't bad. They told us 30min and we waited about 15min., however that's when this place went totally down hill. My wife and I ordered 2 drinks, we got 2 waters for the kids and order the chicken and beef fajitas for 2. Mind you this is 1 dish.... In about 45min, we had the waitress come by one time to check on us and saw 4 tables sit after us, order their food, eat and leave. In the one time the waitress came by, she apologized for the wait, said our food was coming and refilled our waters. 15min after that a "manager" came by, apologized for the wait and my wife, clearly upset told her we had been waiting an hour. The manager rebutted, "we checked the tickets and we'll get it out soon." She had been standing near our table the whole night and saw what was going on but after an hour this was her first discussion with us. So, about 10 Mom later our food finally comes out, minus tortillas for the fajitas. We asked the waitress for them, and she disappeared. About 10min after that the manager again came up to us and asked if everything was okay and we told her we were waiting on tortillas. This time she quickly went and got them and brought back 3 tortillas...for a family of 4.... even if it was just me and my wife, in what world does 3 tortillas make sense? I let my wife and two daughters have a tortilla to make a taco, and patiently waited another 5-10 to ask the waitress who reappeared know we needed tortillas. 10mins she disappears and again...and brought us 3 tortillas...wtf? At this point we're irritated but maintaining our composure because we're trying to have a nice congratulatory dinner for my daughter. When the waitress reappears I ask her to order the chocolate piñata, get me a to-go box and the check. She disappears again... The manager makes one last appearance and asks if we need anything. We told her a box and our check. She promptly brings out the to-go box. Not shortly after our dessert arrives in a decent time. My daughter had a kick out of the display and cracking it open. That is pretty cool. Spoiler alert, everything is cold. You would expect churros, and empanadas to be warm, and I see how that could be an issue with the chocolate piñata, but what it makes it boil down to is that it's not very good at all. With the lack of warmth, very little fruit, a ton of hard churros and watered down cajeta sauce. I would avoid this one! All in all, if you want good food, good service and not a 2 hour dinner, stick to pappasitos...or ANY other restaurant in the world! read more

The good, the bad, and the salsa Finally made it in to Uncle Julio's. It was a Wednesday at 6 pm. I have to say, the hostesses are grumpy, they seem cranky, but we got a table with no waiting. It was a couple of minutes until we saw a waitress, though. They don't bring waters and chips right away like every other Mexican restaurant. When they brought the chips and salsa, they did NOT bring small plates -- the result: SALSA EVERYWHERE. We ordered the queso blanco. It came with a VERY unappetizing red gravy on it. I believe it is the New Mexican sauce. It was gross, but the waitress got me another one without it. The queso wasn't very good, but it wasn't very bad. The chips are very greasy, other yelpers are right (TBH... I like them). The salsa... Full disclosure, I am constantly in search of good salsa. It makes or breaks a Mexican restaurant. My own homemade Salsa is the best - and it's so easy to make, but I like to try restaurants just for their salsa. For my money, Laredo Taqueria on Washington is the best right now. But I digress... Uncle Julio's salsa is NOT good. It is very bland. Super salty. And tasted VERRRRY processed. It seems like it came out of a can from Costco that says, "Mexican salsa" on it. It's TERRIBLE. Our waitress was pleasant, but it seems that most of the wait staff there were depressed. We ordered Chicken and Beef Enchiladas with refried beans and rice. There is some sort of flavoring that they put in their food that I can't quite identify, and it's NOT good. Got a kids meal of chicken strips and it was "just OK." It came with a small bowl of fruit, and was $7... (overpriced). Back to the enchiladas, they were INEDIBLE. I do NOTTT recommend. I know this is a chain restaurant and it's not "real" Mexican food, as in , authentic, but that doesn't mean it has to taste this bad. I wanted to like it. The place is beautiful. The furnishings and light fixtures are gorgeous. I love the decor. There are times when I like "bad" Mexican food - e.g. Los Tios, the old Felix's, etc - but even those have / had an air of authenticity. This tasted like a bullshit west coast version of Mexican food that incorporates New Mexico flavoring -- not cool. This is Texas. Tex-mex is what works here. I've read the other reviews and it seems the restaurant has worked on the timing issues, but the morale is sooooooo low. Most downtrodden bummed out staff I've ever seen. Why so sad? read more

Really gone down hill, when they first opened I really loved them but boy the Managers turn over more then the tortillas! Almost every time I go in it seems like different management and staff. We've been to the Tomball location and enjoyed it a lot. Small town feel with authentic real Mexican food. This one does not disappoint at all. The Yelp reviews are all over the map! Why is this place so polarizing? We decided to try this place and see which reviews are right. I like that they take reservations, which helped get us seated in reasonable time on a busy night. The place is very nicely decorated and the noise level not so bad that you have to scream to be heard. The server brought our drinks and chips. The salsa here is very good and has a smoky flavor that we really liked. So far so good. The chips were on the greasy side though, I'm not sure what was up with that. We ordered an appetizer of queso and guacamole, and the option of the white cheese. That was a good choice. The cheese comes in a cup topped with some spices and was tasty and went well with the salsa and guac. The main course was mixed fajita of steak, chicken, and lobster. It wasn't on the menu like that so they sold us two normal mixed fajitas and added the lobster. The steak was disappointing; we'd heard about how the meat is aged. Some bites were tender but others were heavy with fat. The seasoning wasn't bad but we tend to prefer the lime seasoned beef served at some other places. The chicken was very good and the lobster too. All three meats were well prepared and accompanied by plenty of extras (beans, guac, sour cream, rice, pico), and they gave us both flour and corn tortillas on request. The corn tortillas were very good; bigger than those in some other places and not too thick. We were intrigued the chocolate piñata but went for the churros (more on this below). We had a special request they didn't get right the first time but came through on the second attempt in fair time. The churros were good, served chopped into bite size chunks and with dipping honey. They also offer cajeta for the churros (essentially caramel) and we asked for that too, but were given something more like a watery chocolate sauce...must have been a miscommunication because that's nothing like cajeta. Cajeta fans, you know what I'm talking about. A note about the chocolate piñata: one of the most affecting reviews I read was from another Yelper that said the experience was fun but the churros inside were cold. I've had cold churros before and they are nasty and this really turned me off to trying the piñata dessert. After talking to a family next to us that ordered the piñata, I think cold is too strong a description. The churros we had were warm and had a nice crunch on the outside. The server said that all the churros in the restaurant are made fresh in the restaurant. So while I agree with the other Yelper that hot churros in a chocolate piñata could be problematic, I think the churros in the piñata are probably more like warm or room temperature rather than cold. We may come back to try it ourselves on a special occasion and I can post an update. Finally, the servers were very nice and kept up despite the place being pretty busy. Based on some of the other reviews it appears they've improved some since opening. Overall, a good if pricey meal with several solid points and a couple weak ones. read more

Visited Uncle Julio's new location over Christmas weekend. Service was great and our waitress consistently met our demanding family requests extremely quickly. Despite the reviews I decided to still give it a chance. Ordered beef fajitas the order came with Spain rice, beans, cheese and all that fun stuff. I like my meat well done, the meat was not well done.. the pieces were big but it was mostly fat. I also ordered a strawberry Rita which it says that the strawberries are fresh but they were frozen. The food would be good but the attitudes nasty. I decided to give this place a try and I don't regret stopping by. My server was Dakota. My only complaint thats keeps me from coming back is the salsa. I understand Some people like that kind of salsa, but please give people that are used to Mexican salsa at the other restaurants, give us the option of the cold red salsa that we are used to and had expected. After many years of avoiding Uncle Julio's because of bad service, I decided to give it another try.... BIG MISTAKE!! The service was GREAT!! Bartender was quick and attentive, but the food was a disaster. I do NOT eat beans of any type... its not going to change. I ordered my meal and said NO BEANS PLEASE. My order came out and you guessed it.. BEANS!! Not only were they there, they had spilled onto my food. Bean juice everywhere. The bartender immediately apologized and said she would fix it. 46 seconds later (yes I timed it) she returned with my plate saying she had them "remake it".... no. The indention from the bowl was still on the plate as was the bean juice. When I refused it she said "no I promise that's not bean juice, it's from the ground beef"... no!! Now not only am I picky, I'm too stupid to know the difference between BROWN bean juice and ORANGISH beef drippings!! Spoke to the mgr, explained my situation, and left. This restaurant has the same type and quality of food as Gringos. The biggest differences are: The ambiance is amazing. The restaurant is nice and definitely has the appeal of a nice fine-dining restaurant. The staff is nice. We were helped by more than 4 different staffers for water, food, refills and such.. The tortillas are made from scratch. This is the tell-all of any Mexican restaurant. The prices are far more expensive than Gringos. I had the Juanita's platter and a mango lemonade. The nachos at the start of service were delicious. I also ordered the chili con queso. This was ok, but nothing worth 7 dollars. If you want good chili con queso, order the one from Torchy's. My portion of this standard Mexican food was $38. The platter I ordered had a mix of enchiladas, taco, and a tamale. I wanted to try everything, especially since I was going to pay a good price for them. Food: Enchiladas were good. Tamale was decent, but the filling had too much chilli spice in it, and the crispy taco was standard. The fresh made tortillas were good but I could purchase a pack of "homemade" tortillas from Kroger that are just as good for the same price of 4 at Uncle Julio's. I'm not a cheap foodie, and I enjoy great ambiance but this place is a little unbalanced. For the price of their food, the food should be spectacular! They already have a nice atmosphere but the food is not up to par. On the other hand, I could see how this restaurant could flourish in this area. It is nice and they have great customer service. But if you just want great Mexican food at a reasonable price and don't care about the ambiance, there are a dime a dozen in this area. read more

Horrible experience. We went on a Saturday and meet a friend. She had her drink already. So I ordered a Skinny Margarita and we did the table side guacamole. Ordered our lunch at the same time---big mistake. By the time the table side guacamole was being done and just landed on the table our lunch arrived ( mind you still no drink for me!!) Was the guacamole good - sure but no time to enjoy it. I finally flagged down a manger to get my drink half way thru my lunch. For the price you pay you should be able to enjoy each course. I haven't written a review in a long time but this visit to Uncle Julio's Spring location prompted me to change that. I was rather disappointed in my dinner. I ordered the three fish tacos, which was recommended to me by the friendly bar staff. When I got my plate I immediately noticed the beans in the bowl looked burned and over cooked. The rice was white, which I do not think I've ever seen white Mexican rice. Ok, as far as the tacos... a big no for me. There was SO much cabbage on each taco that you couldn't see the fish. I ate the first one but when I got to the second taco I took off the cabbage. There was little pieces of fish. I looked at the third taco and it was a tiny piece of fish as well. They tried to hide it with all the cabbage slaw. There was no taste and the rice was worse. Basically watered down rice with parsley sprinkled on top and absolutely no seasoning whatsoever. The beans were hard and over cooked. That was $20 down the drain. I didn't say anything. I left most of the cabbage, rice and beans on the plate along with two of those corn tortillas. Food was pretty darn good. The chocolate piñata was amazing! So freshly made that the churros that fell out were warm and the fruit was chilled. Drinks were ok. I had read they were watered down so I ordered beer but my M-I-L liked her margarita. The beer could have been colder. I like draft beer and they only have bottles. She was awful with her service & complaining a lot. Apologies from her about her not remembering what I ordered.... totally recommend the Watermelon margarita. The chips are thin & tasty also salsas where very good! FYI: we had 4 margaritas(2 each & the bill was $45. Took a look at menu & hope to come back hopefully with a different bartender. UPDATE: The staff at Uncle Julio's reached out to us about my previous review (listed below). That showed a lot of integrity for them as a company. The take what their customers say to heart and genially want to correct the issues. It's so awesome to see that now days! We arrived on a busy Friday night, had a reservation made ahead of time, and thank goodness because they were packed! We were a little early so we headed over to the bar. I ordered the original Cabo Margarita; it was amazing! Table was ready on time! We were seated in the back of the restaurant and Marta was our waitress. She was a lot better than our previous experience with service. Connor stoped by a couple times as well and followed up with us at the end of our visit. I think they are starting to find their groove and it's showing. We ordered the table side guacamole and it was delicious I would recommend to anyone going into Uncle Julio's. For the main course I ordered the Ahi Tuna Tacos! I really enjoyed them however next time I order them (which I will) I will ask for the sauce on the side. The manager from the back of the house came out and asked us how we enjoyed everything. He was super friendly and wanted all of our feed back. I feel horrible because I asked his name and he gave it multiple times and for the life of me cannot remember other than it started with a D (I am so sorry). Anyway he was great and wanted to ensure we enjoyed our experience. Connor also came back by and checked on us to see if there was anything he could do because he knew we didn't have the best experience last time. I let him know all was well and I will update my review to reflect how they did tonight! We finished with the chocolate piñata! GET IT! I don't care if it's $100 worth it! Anyway we will for sure be back and I'm so glad we got an awesome experience our second time! **END UPDATE** I'm giving three stars for now simply because I know they just opened. So once they're running smoothly I'll edit hopefully with more stars. Arrived Thursday around 8:30 pm, small wait but that's to be expected it was only their 3rd day open. We sat on the patio which was very nice. First issue: We were seated and sat and sat and sat. The manager Connor walked by multiple times along with about 10 other waiters and not 1 person checked on us. We probably sat for 15 minutes with nothing. We were patient because they had just opened but at the same time I've been in the industry and for a table to sit that long and no one check on them is inexcusable. We had to flag someone down and he didn't ask us what we would like to drink he just said let me go figure out where your waiter is. Finally our waiter Daniel shows up. We order our drinks and food at the same time. ( I should not be able to go to a new restaurant and know what I want to eat before even seeing a waiter; when the first time seeing their menu was when I was seated.) Food arrived within a reasonable time and was good. Everything was correct and hot, but our waiter never checked on us once someone else served our food. Not to see if we needed anything, if it tasted ok.... nothing. Once we finished our meal and were leaned back in our chairs with our plates pushed away from us did he come check on us. We asked for a togo box and the check. Again, more waiting... We see him come out 10 minutes later with a tray of drinks. One of the drinks falls off the tray and shatters. Stuff happens I get it, I've been there done that while waiting tables. Issue number two: Daniel needed to walk off whatever happened. I thought he had cut himself and was worried. I know glass cuts can be bad! He didn't, I'm not sure what happened but he had to go "walk it off". Again more waiting.... The manager still never comes by to check on us, sitting with a table full of dishes and we are obviously finished with our meal. He goes to every single table to the right of us and behind us but never stopped at ours. If your staff has an incident then take over his tables or have someone else pick them up. Pre-buss our table, get togo boxes for us something. Daniel comes back by apologizes, and we ask for containers and the check again. Finally we are on the home stretch! Overall it's a neat place. I know it's new, busy, crazy and they are still trying to find their sweet spot for running it smoothly; but I feel like the issues that I had and witnessed the table in-front of (who waited for an hour for their meal and never got it until they had to grab someone else to flag down Connor) could have been resolved if they worked as a team. Yes, it's not your table but if people stop coming because of bad service then it's taking money out of your pocket too. Hopefully they work out the kinks because it's a neat place and we really needed something like this around here. read more

This is the second tome my dad has tried pick up from here and the first time they offered to remake plate and he went back but we gave it another shot and wow, I truly don't think anybody even looked at the order. Meat and chicken undercooked. Queso was hard. Corn tortillas look like cheap grocery store. Only good thing was salsa and chips. read more

Nope. Will not be back. They charged $25.00 for one meal and my husband and I ordered it to share. The plate came out and had literally (I am not joking or exaggerating) 2 fajita slices of chicken. Two fajita slices of steak. Three shrimp. That was $25.00. One small order of guacamole and one order of sopapillas for dessert. Our bill was $81.00 for TWO people and we even shared the "meal" listed above LOL. The 13 dollar margarita we each had was an 8 ounce glass. And here's the thing, if the food had been amazing even though there was hardly any of it, maybe I wouldn't be writing this. But not only were the prices ridiculous, the food was marginal at best.
