I stopped by Mexican Mom Cocina Tradicional for breakfast today, and it's easily one of the most authentic Mexican spots I've had in Spring. The horchata stood out right away, perfectly sweet and easily one of the best I've found in the city. I ordered the chorizo breakfast tacos, which were solid, and the huevos ahogados with frijoles charros, both full of flavor and well-prepared. The empanadas were also great, especially the chicken and cheese, that one was my favorite. To finish, I tried the pan de elote, and it was excellent. Overall, a really strong breakfast experience with authentic flavors across the board. Definitely a spot worth coming back to. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for months from reviews I have read online. Also, I am on the email list and see the changing weekly menu, and always see something that I want to try. My husband and I finally got to try it last week, and it did not disappoint! All of our items were fresh and delicious! I was enchanted by the atmosphere and presence of the owner and her family. We have already been back for a different special on this week's menu! We especially love the creamy poblano corn empanadas. We fought over one last time, but this time we each got our own. The waitstaff we have had both times is very sweet, but does not speak or understand English very well and was unable to really help us decide this second time, so we just took her recommendation. One of the items she recommended, the Huarachon, was not my favorite, but the other items were very good. We would have especially enjoyed some interaction with the chef-owner or the gentleman who seems to be her husband, since it did not seem very busy at the time, but they simply said "hello". Decided to stop on an early Wednesday afternoon, empanadas were good and the jamaica drink had good flavor! The fideo was good as well! It was simple which when something is good you don't need to complicate it. However, where it was lacking was in service and in temperature. While everyone around us got service and food rapidly, we waited 15 minutes for our one Jamaica drink. And an additional 10 minutes for the fideo to come out lukewarm which was a disappointment because I think it would've made a good meal great. read more

It was very sweet! A great hole in the Mexican place. My boyfriend and I were driving by the area for pottery, and it was in a little shop right next door. It was around 30 people worth of seating and it was a homey rustic look. Some decorations but extremely cute. I took a picture of the coaster. I ordered the enchiladas verde and the horchata. It was delicious and very authentic tasting. Very different from Tex Mex. For the horchata, we were told we could get as many refills as we wanted! Didn't end up taking up that offer, but what amazing service. Service was fast, and I believe the waiter was the owner! We were seated right by the kitchen and they gave fantastic service. read more

Wow! We started by ordering a half dozen empanadas: two beef, two chicken and cheese, and two "Dessert" Empanadas de Manzana containing apple , walnuts and raisins. My favorite was the combination of chicken and cheese where the seasoning was forward and just honestly incredible. For the beef they provided a wonderful chimichurri salsa, and it was so good that I found myself eating the leftover chimichurri with my cutlery. We tried the Enchilada Verdes off the regular menu and the Mexican Mom chicken on the weekly menu. They have a limited menu and I think I actually appreciate that. The one side has their empanadas and appetizers and regular dishes, the other side is a "weekly" menu that changes every week so you never know quite what you will find on it. We decided to try the Enchiladas Verdes and the award-winning Mexican Mom chicken. Special mention to the white rice on that plate, moist and flavorful with cheese on top. The chicken sauce had a brilliant flavor profile from the onion and carrots and mushrooms, slightly sweet and a hint of spicy. So this place has a lot of charm and appeal. It is not like a normal restaurant, has a lot of personality. Some of the food was a little spicy for Mr. Picky, but his Horchata drink helped get him through that. The big question was what to order for dessert. We settled on and enjoyed the Chocolate Tres Leches and a special banana dessert not shown on the menu. I live just down the street from this restaurant and have passed it countless times--so my boyfriend and I finally decided to give it a try last night. They close at 8 PM, and we arrived around 7:30 PM. Despite it being close to closing time, we were warmly welcomed by the owner, who we later learned is the husband in this family-owned business. The menu was unique--regular dishes on the left and weekly rotating specials on the right. My boyfriend ordered one of the specials, but the owner came out a few minutes later to let us know they had unfortunately run out. He was very apologetic, and we completely understood. Then, just a few moments later, he returned with a smile and said, "I think my wife can perform a miracle and make the special for you." We were touched by the effort and told him not to go through the trouble, but sure enough, they made it happen! I ordered the Enchiladas Bandera, and it was absolutely amazing. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with love. The restaurant itself is quaint and inviting, and the hospitality was top-notch. The owner was incredibly kind, and the overall service made us feel right at home. We'll definitely be back and highly recommend this hidden gem. Update to respond to the business owner: I appreciate explaining the difference. I am well aware of it, and I did not expect crunchy enchiladas, of course. Your chilaquiles are delicious by the way! Enchiladas do require a light cooking, not to crisp, before filling and rolling. Your enchiladas "felt" like they were microwaved to get them to roll more easily, that sacrifices their texture and can make tortillas soggy with the tomatillo sauce. I do not know if this is your method. Enchiladas should not get soggy. The cooked tortilla (not crispy) will not get soggy unless it is left wet for a long time, but I think this is not your style. The difference is that chilaquiles are fried to crisp. Enchiladas are just cooked in the oil for a brief amount of time before filling and rolling. I understand that everyone makes their enchiladas differently. I see you didn't agree with my review and I am ok with that. Your flavors are amazing! I have been recommending this place as one of the only truly Mexican places where real Mexican food, as opposed to Tex Mex food, is served One previous time, service was terrible because they had a bigger table, so I did not post a negative review, but this time unfortunately I have to. A couple of days ago I was craving their enchiladas. We got there and Mexican Mom's husband greeted us, he is super nice, very friendly. I immediately felt the place is not well air conditioned. There was only one table that could sit all for of us without being so close to the kitchen. We sat there only to realize things got so much worse every time that door opened. Then a waitress came and took our order, also very nice and friendly. Once we ordered, our meal took forever. I know they make every meal there at the moment, but it was still a very long time. The salsa is already made just like the chicken and the cheese. Maybe the tortillas took some time to fry, but when our plate finally arrived I noticed the tortillas were very soggy, I am not sure they were "cooked/fried" or just wetted in the oil. It made the tacos lose their shape and it became a mess on my plate. It didn't taste good. Then the heat coming in because people like to decide if they stay or not there at the door with door opened. This wouldn't be a problem if the AC was more potent for a place like this.The room was even smoking, you could barely see from our table to the kitchen. To Mexican Mom: I understand food can take a long time, but please don't cut corners on how you make your food. Your flavor, tu sazón, tu mano y tu cuidado is why I keep coming back, but those enchiladas were not as great as the first time I tried them. I don't know how Mexican Mom's cook, but I figured any mom's cooking gotta be good. So we had to make this our inauguration meal to the area ... plus we had to go to Walmart. Weekly specials on the right side of the menu were looking mighty tempting but we decided to opt what they're famous for which is the salsa verde enchiladas (do upgrade with chicken for a couple of bucks otherwise it's just cheese) and their empanadas which we chose beef and chicken (looked branded but was hard to tell from the bubbles on the outside). The empanadas come with what tasted like a chimichuri sauce and an orange hot sauce. My kid ordered the empanadas but then transitioned to the enchiladas. Never seen her do that before as usually fried stuff wins hands down with her. We also got the queso fundido which comes with mini corn tortillas which was a sleeper hit for us. Then we ended it with the chocolate tres leches made with Mexican chocolate. My kid was so full from the meal that I finally had almost a full desert for myself. Heh heh. Water is served room temp from a bottle left at the table. I like cold drinks more (especially as hot as it was that day and we were out moving stuff) but it was fine. Just stopped by for lunch and can honestly say that was the most enjoyable meal and experience I've had in a long time. The atmosphere is cozy and comforting, while the staff all felt like family. Smiles, generosity and courtesy seemed to be natural and not an act. Our waitress never seemed to rush us and we also never waited on anything. The empanadas erupted with flavor. I tried the beef, and both the red sauce and the chimichuri were out of this world. The chicken enchilada verses were packed full of chicken that was moist and the verde sauce was fresh and had the right amount of pop to it. Met up with some friends for lunch and they had been wanting to try this place for a while. It is a cute little restaurant that is adorably decorated very welcomingly (is that a word??) and tucked in a little strip of businesses that all share a fairly spacious parking lot. It is separate from the parking for the Walmart behind them! I got the impression that it is a family owned and operated business because I had asked our waitress (are we allowed to say that?) a question about dietary restrictions and she came back and said she had asked her mom for the answer -- how sweet of her to find an answer when she didn't know for sure! I definitely appreciated that! I ordered the cheese enchiladas (vegetarian options are available!) and my companions had chosen something off the weekly menu-- I can't remember exactly what they had other than one was a meatloaf with mole and the other looked like a kind of lasagna with chicken. I forgot to take a picture of the weekly menu ‍ The flavors were fantastic!! I didn't try the other dishes but my friends were raving about how good they were. My enchiladas were amazing. Perfect balance of tang, spice, and creaminess. Seasoned just right, didn't have an overly saltiness I usually associate with restaurant food. It's hard to tell from the picture but there were 3 enchiladas smothered in the delicious green sauce and accompanied by beans and some tortilla chips. Also the portions are enormous! All of us had leftovers to take away. I should have gotten more pictures but we were too busy catching up and chatting. Came here on a cold Saturday and it was busy. All the tables were filled up. I just wish they had smaller tables for smaller parties. Most of the tables fit up to 6 people comfortably and for a party of 2, it's a shamed some customers left because there were no open tables unless they were comfortable sharing a community table. They did have nice couches as a seated area along some tables. The service was okay due to the difficulties of getting someone's attention. I needed more sauce and later needed the check. When I ended up going to the counter to pay and get myself the sauce, someone said they'll come to me. They ended up forgetting. By that time, the lunch rush had died out, so it wasn't as busy as earlier. Regardless, the food was really good. I definitely recommend the beef empanadas! They were a good hand size. But again, I wish they served it with more sauce instead of tiny little containers for two bites. I'm a sauce girl... I also ordered the chicken enchiladas verdes. They were really nice enough to split a plate for me and my husband and we both had a big plate full. I'll definitely come back and hopefully get to try other things I haven't tried yet.
