We went back for some chips. I like them because they're fresh. thick and fresh. Got a bag which was good sized. Asked for one of those thimble sized containers for salsa and the cashier said it actually doesn't come with salsa. Dang. First time I've been denied salsa at a Mexican restaurant. That's like a Chinese store denying someone soy sauce. He said they sell salsa. But when I saw it it's like a full jar. I just wanted some for my chips. Nuts. But in all fairness when he saw the consternation on my face he gave me a couple of the thimble containers. I mean I would've eaten them dry still. America is just coming to the brink of despair. The store set up is clunky if you are new. You walk in and unsure what to do. It's a go straight to back to order then come sit. The place is small so to-go is good and they have lots of to-go family meal options too. The staff was good but the cashier was a bit slow at taking orders with some customers. I ordered: - Carnitas taco on corn - very good - shredded chicken on corn - highly recommend! Of you ever had pazole it tastes like your chicken in drenched in the broth, yum! - queso blanco - not impressed but it was ok. Chips are delicious so recommend some to-go or with salsa. - Mexican coke - the real stuff too! They have a fridge of salsas to grab for your table. I liked them all so it's your preference. The tacos are big portions why they gave me two tortillas. I basically made two tacos out of one order. Awesome deal for $3.25 a taco! I want to try carne asado which I feel will be worth the $1 up-charge. And try the nopales to see how they make theirs. Only complaint I have is the menu. You can't see it until you are close in line. I want a menu I can view while in line waiting. This way the line runs faster. Lastly the menu transitions are distracting when trying to read the menu. I say turn off the transitions, they are more frustrating than a cool feature. I will be back. read more

We get the one pound of carne asada and I love that they give cilantro, lime and onions and you can put it in yourself with a side of 12 flour tortillas. My mom and I had gorditas & quesabirrias when we went in, and they were delicious! The food was filled with lots of meat that got us full really quickly. The jamaica agua fresca was perfect and refreshing. We also took some cheesecake flan, and fresh tostadas home which came one wonderful. Menu is pretty straight forward. Pick the meat and how you want it, taco, torta, gordita, you get it. Added some onions y cilantro y queso fresco and I was set. OMG!! Today was my first visit to Don Chuy. At first bite, I promoted myself to a regular at this place. When you know, you know. I ordered a bowl of menudo and a barbacoa taco. No haven't had menudo that good in years. I wish I had space to finish the entire bowl. It was seasoned to perfection - came out steaming hot and had the perfect amount of "goodies" in the bowl. The barbacoa taco was on point -- and bonus points for have the homemade tortillas made on-site My son only likes cheese quesadillas when visiting Mexican restaurants. I made him try I and bacon egg and cheese taco. Next thing I know, he's asking me to order him more. I snuck a bite of his taco and everything just went together. I stopped in for a quick bite and this place quickly became one of my favorite spots for tacos. The service was exceptional and the staff made some excellent recommendations. I tried the Al pastor, carnitas and carne asada tacos. Unbelievably delicious and I have to come back to try the birria because they also looked amazing. Tortillas are made fresh and so are the salsas. The ambiance is great and very clean. Music is just the right decibel range and they were playing some great 90's tunes - that's my jam. Checked out this spot on my recent travels in Houston. Tried the BirriaQuesadillas --absolutely delicious! So flavorful, tender meat; just delicious. The customer service wasn't the best & a bit confusing when my group was trying to order a family size order. I don't think the family portions are worth it but I would be back for individual meals for sure. read more

We like Don Chuy for its casual counter service, serving Mexican tacos. The ordering process can be confusing for 1st timers here since the menu is on the wall and it annoyingly rotates as one is reading & deciding. The meat cuts are leaner for the Woodlands area folks, a little bland but the food satisfy the craving for street tacos without having to drive to Conroe. I finally managed to steer the Missus into Don Chuy's yesterday (22Apr25) for a spot of lunch. I was in a for a bit of a surprise when we entered. This is an order at the counter, take a number and sit down kind of place. So just think of it as a not so fast food restaurant. I ordered a burrito with chicharron en salsa verde (pig skins with green sauce) and a small black bean portion. It strikes me as strange that this is the only bean served at Don Chuy's, but I lived through that minor trauma. The meal was delivered and it looked well put together, but the tortilla was beginning to delaminate in my hands as I ate. To me, that meant a very fresh tortilla that had been heated a tad too much on a comal or flattop. It held the fillings in and allowed me to have the hands on experience a burrito is supposed to give. Flavors were very well matched and the texture of the pig skin was sublime. Gelatinous, melty and unctuous. I would have loved to been able to add nopales (pickled cactus) for a touch more salty and crunch but the lettuce and tomatoes managed to give some snap to the chew. The Missus however was not as satisfied with her meal as I was with my meal. It was the black beans that ruined her beef gordita ... or should I say lack of them. See, she is a refrito kind of gal when it comes to gorditas and nothing else will do. She is also not very adept at going to new places, that day her disdain for new showed up in spades. I did give her the choice on the way for a different place to eat, but indecision on her part allowed me to finally walk through Don Chuy's door while dragging her in and try them out. I was in search of breakfast tacos, and I found my new favorite spot. Their tortillas are made fresh, and all the food overall was delicious. They offer several variations of sauces, which you can also purchase. I really like that because I prefer fresh versus buying at the grocery store with all the preservatives. This place has great tacos! It is not a food truck, and it is not a taquería. It gave me a feeling of a fast food place, but tacos are served. I loved the vibe, I loved the mixture of concepts. I loved the "al pastor" meat, and will come back again. I saw mi Cerro de la Silla on a mural and made me fall in love with the place. Sorry! Objectively, though, the al pastor meat was very good, most importantly I never saw any tissue in the taco. I only took a couple of pieces from my son's taco. I hope the tortilla was good too. I'm now 55 years old and I am an avid foodie who loves finding great places to dine in and enjoy awesome food. Finally I find the best Mexican breakfast in Houston!!! The service, the food, the ambiance, everything is perfect. My wife and I absolutely love it and hope to be able to enjoy breakfast here every weekend. So after landing at IAH recently, we decided to stop in on the way home and make Don Chuy our last "vacation meal" since we technically did not return to our property yet :) I ordered three tacos... Steak: Just as great as the first time. The beef is high quality and I can't imagine coming here without ordering this for at least one of my proteins. 5-stars. Al Pastor: Really enjoyable. Almost as good as the steak. 4.5-stars. Birria Beef: This one was just okay. I would not order it again. 3-stars. The chips and guac were solid too. I liked the thicker chips, but the guacamole was a little on the basic side. 4-stars. I got my tacos to go. he did say it's only the corn tortillas and chips that are homemade, unless they just didn't have flour at that moment but it seems like it is mainly corn. Excellent, Mexican. Reminded me of my days in San Diego when you can get amazing fresh Mexican food at any hour. My only gripe was that seating was limited, and we had a baby, and there was no highchair. However, the food was excellent. The atmosphere was fun. I definitely recommend. On my latest visit, I held the door for an older gentleman and told him how amazing I found the place. He turned out to be the owner. After eleven great years in Austin, my love for breakfast tacos is now baked into my identity, and this is the first place I found upon moving to The Woodlands that delivered top-level, authentic tacos. Al pastor ta os, egg and papas breakfast tacos, and my favorite, their carnitas tacos and their birria tacos. My wife doesn't love Mexican food quite like I do but even she was quite impressed. We love La Cocina de Roberto, so we naturally had to try Don Chuy- their newest endeavor! This place was beautifully done on all accounts. As expected, the service from all employees, including the owners was perfection. They make their corn tortillas in house, right in front of you! (Yes, they utilize a machine to assist- all the bests do!) We took two dozen to go and they made them on the spot. Short wait time for the 2 dozen tortillas and half dozen birria tacos- all were delicious. This is more of a tortilleria with a few signature items, not a full sit down restaurant. Stopped by for the first time on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised. We were were about fifteen minutes late for breakfast but the owner's wife was more than happy to accommodate our order. Ordered bean and cheese tacos and egg and potato tacos, both on corn tortillas. All of the ingredients were fresh and the corn tortillas were delicious (not fried). The order came out within a reasonable timeframe considering the restaurant was completely occupied by customers and, most important to me, the food was hot. The restaurant was super clean, food was great, reasonably priced, and service was prompt and courteous. Give it a try and I think you'll like what you will experience. read more
