Finally checked out Umiya today for a lunch date with one of the girlies and it was by far better than we expected. The food was very fresh and delicious and the options were plenty. We tried so many different things and we didn't have a single complaint aside from "Yall are bringing these so quickly!" and "I can't move I'm so full" which are the types of complaints every business wants to have. Our waitress was very nice and quick. We didn't get her name but she had short/shoulder length blonde hair. Overall, this was a great place with great food and is SO worth the money spent. Umiya is one of the best all-you-can-eat sushi spots in town! The restaurant is clean, and the decor is thoughtfully designed. The food quality is excellent--the sashimi is fresh, and both the hibachi and fried udon are full of flavor. Their lunch and dinner menus differ quite a bit, so I highly recommend the dinner menu if you're a big sashimi fan. As a bonus, when you order several pieces of sashimi, they often surprise you with a beautifully plated presentation, which is a nice touch. However, on my recent visit, I noticed the sushi pieces have become noticeably smaller than when they first opened. The quality is still great, but the portion shrinkage was a bit disappointing, so I could only give 4 stars. read more

Got a lunch bento box and 2 sushi rolls for lunch today. Everything about the food was aggressively mediocre and bland. The teriyaki chicken was incredibly dry, and the sauce had little flavor. Stir fried noodles were as basic as it gets. Gyoza was over fried, dry and bland to the point even the sauce didn't help it. California roll was oddly chewy and had almost zero cucumber. Spicy tuna and salmon rolls were both really bland. No chili, green onions, or sesame flavor at all. Just minced fish and mayo. Only positive things I can say is the vegetables weren't over cooked and fresh tasting and the shrimp tempura was decent. It's a lot of food for your money but honestly still not worth it to me. I typically go to Red Koi for a lunch special and will continue to do so. read more

My husband and I have been waiting to try this new Japanese restaurant since it opened. We were drown to the variety of foods that you could secure at relatively cheap price point. We went to dinner which is $30 per person. I started with miso soup and the shaggy dog rolls, which were similar to California rolls. Both were tasty. On the other hand, the hibachi rice was just OK. My husband also got a few different rolls and rice, all of which he really enjoyed. We skipped dessert, but that was an option on the menu. We went on a Thursday evening, which is a slow night. It seems, but our food came out relatively quickly, except for my husband's last order which never came. We waited for about 20 minutes and then they said something was wrong with the original and they were remaking it so we waited another 15 minutes and then we decided to just go. The house was fine and the service was also fine. The drinks were not the best. However, the bartender did recommend a cold sake that had a milky texture. It was fantastic (though overpriced). The ambience is nice, especially for a quick date night during the week. I did see a couple people as well who brought children, so it seems to be family, friendly as well. I hope to go again and be able to update this review with more glowing feedback. It has potential. read more

This is, by far, the worst sushi I've ever had. I've eaten at a dozen + sushi restaurants in Florida (finally finding my one go-to), so maybe that's why I find this sushi insulting. Where's the fish? It's all some sort of fish salad. Even the cucumbers aren't chunks, but tiny slices (which makes it super watery btw). I've NEVER had a bad rainbow roll (it's so basic; how do you mess that up?) - til now. The "spicy tuna" roll had no spices on it. I looked. And, it smelled bad. Not fresh at all. I couldn't finish my meal. I've tried two other ones in Memphis area so far: Takashi Bistro and Red Koi. Try Red Koi. It's the best I've found so far. This stuff is cheap, bad sushi for $20. I'm writing this review because I was extremely disappointed after being turned away from this restaurant today, 8/30/26. I've been coming to Umiya since they opened, and this used to be one of my favorite places to eat. One of the reasons I continued coming was because they had always been accommodating to my child, who is autistic and nonverbal. Every time we've visited, we have been allowed to bring her a small 10-piece order of chicken nuggets and a drink because those are foods she will reliably eat. We come in, order our food, eat, tip, and leave without causing any disturbance. Today, however, we were told that we could not dine in because outside food is not allowed. I completely understand that restaurants have policies, but I'm confused as to when this policy changed because we were here just three weeks ago and were allowed to do the exact same thing. For families with autistic children, food can be much more complicated than simply saying, "They can eat something else." My child is nonverbal and has very limited foods that she will eat. Bringing food that she is comfortable with allows us to enjoy a meal as a family and allows me to support my child's needs while still patronizing the restaurant. What makes this especially disappointing is that we have been loyal customers. We have never caused a problem, and we have always supported the restaurant and tipped when we came. Other restaurants have been understanding about this, including 901 Hotpot when we visited last weekend. I'm not upset that a restaurant has rules. I'm disappointed that there was no understanding or consideration for our situation, especially after we had been allowed to do this many times before. Unfortunately, this experience was enough for me to decide to take my business elsewhere. I hope management will reconsider how situations like this are handled because families with special-needs children deserve to be treated with understanding and respect. read more

We decided to give the new all you can eat restaurant a try as our daughter was in town for college and loves sushi. The restaurant is super clean and nice inside and had an excellent vibe. Our server Chris L. Was brand new, but super friendly and helpful. Our daughter got the all you can eat buffet which is $28.95. Make sure you come hungry so that you can take full advantage of all the restaurant has to offer. My husband and I ate off the regular menu and were very pleased as well. The fried rice had a great flavor and the gyoza was crispy but still really good. All the rolls that we tried were of great quality as well. We will definitely be back again. Once again, this restaurant delivered an outstanding experience! The food was absolutely excellent--every dish was just as delicious as I remembered from my last visit. The staff was friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful throughout my visit. I especially want to recognize Jae Seon who was incredibly patient while I took my time ordering several different items from the menu. Their kindness, knowledge of the menu, and exceptional customer service made the experience even more enjoyable. This time I enjoyed the cucumber salad, teriyaki beef, smoked salmon sushi with rice, shrimp fried rice, and the spicy edamame. Every single dish was fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. Each bite was a delight, and it's hard to pick a favorite because everything was prepared so well. To top it all off, I paired my meal with a cold Tsingtao beer, which complemented the food perfectly. Another great AYCE sushi place in Memphis is here! We came for the first time on a Saturday afternoon around 5:30. The door was opened for us and we were seated promptly. Our server was very nice and explained the menu. We are big sushi eaters and love the raw fish. We ordered one of all the sushi appetizers, soup, cucumber salad, and a lot of sashimi. Our favorites were the yellowtail on fire, salmon mango, poke bowl, and the salmon/yellowtail sashimi. Of course the fried Oreos with vanilla ice cream is a must! Presentation was on point and everything was clean and neat. As of 12/6/24 they serve beer. A few domestic and a few Japanese options. CONS: When we left around 6:30, the place was PACKED, and you can tell the service took a hit. You have to order through the server so it's tough when your server has 8 tables to keep up with. Of course we all did AYCE. Coming from a place that had infinite AYCE, this place had really good sushi. Started off with our usual nigiri order of hamachi, tuna, salmon and smoked salmon. Smoked salmon hands down the best one I had. Our rolls came out on a boat which was really nice. The tatakis were also very good and flavorful.
