First time eating here in a very long time, but the food and service were really good, so we won't wait as long between visits moving forward. The burger I had was juicy and delicious. T's steak was cook perfectly, a beautiful medium. The fries were fine...like McDonalds but the tiny version. We both got Alex's salad to start and they make all their dressings in house. The ranch and the blue cheese dressings were excellent, and the salad itself was put together very well in a chilled salad bowl and with warm, freshly toasted croutons. It was so good, the J must stand for Joe, right? And BOGO Martinis? WTF! It's like a milkshake where you get the extra bonus part in the metal container, but with delicious boozy martini remnants! So I don't recommend 3... just sayin'. Bonus refills were killer, literally! I had the tequila one, the espresso one, and the Duke (the most classic) and all were great. Service here was amazing. First, sitting at the bar and having a drink before dinner as we waited for everyone to arrive. Great, talkative and informative bartenders. Loved it! And the waiter was excellent as well and just nailed it. So friendly and attentive. We started off with the Shrimp Appetizer (Fried and spicy) and these were good. They came out quick and were woofed down by our party of 3. For dinner, I had the the crab cakes (are they native to Memphis?) and they were delicious... as were the sides of couscous and Mac-n-cheese. Double Carbs, please! Others enjoyed their meals as well (Steaks and what not) and drinks and everything. This was a great stop outside of Memphis and was worth the trip from downtown. Although I didn't pay, so I don't really know if it was worth it. But everything was great AF! I'd go back and maybe seek out this chain again in other cities. Great job! read more

The restaurant and parking lot tend to get crowded at dinner time, but the pacing of the food and service is always quick. At night, the restaurant is dimly lit. My husband and I went for a dinner last night to celebrate our anniversary. And had another great experience. Our server had such a sweet disposition and provided exceptional hospitality (Bailey S.). Don't get me wrong, there are more affordable dishes on the menu but when you are craving prime rib...you gotta have it. Nadia, our waitress was attentive and kept a smile on her face even though she was stretched thin! Stopped in while in town. The restaurant is well put together and refreshingly not overly loud (a welcome change from where we'd eaten the night before). Food was a mixed bag. My dining companion had the bean soup and said it was excellent. I had the rotisserie chicken, which was decent but unremarkable at $26. At that price I'd expect a bit more quality and quantity. Our server Omar was polite and attentive throughout, and offered to send us off with an iced tea for the road (a small but genuinely nice gesture). My only complaint is that they were out of several of the things on the specialty menu like drinks and entrees. I will say that it is snowing in the city which might have delayed shipping. We've actually never been to J. Alexander's so we decided to give it a try for dinner. We arrived around 6 pm, and there was already a 30-minute wait. No biggie since they have a nice big waiting area just outside the entrance. Our waitress was very pleasant and accommodating. I requested a red sangria since I couldn't find anything on the menu I really wanted, she accidentally brought me a white sangria instead but it was still good so I didn't mind lol! We started with the calamari, which was nicely fried and the calamari was tender. For dinner, I ordered the slow-roasted prime rib and opted for mac & cheese on the side, and my boyfriend got the NY strip. The prime rib was incredibly tender and packed with flavor, and the portion size was very generous. I tried a bite of my boyfriend's NY strip but found it a bit salty for my taste. The mac & cheese was also amazing, definitely a standout side! Overall, it was an enjoyable experience and I'd come back again! Though I wish the lighting wasn't so dark inside. read more

J. Alexander's has always run a close second to Houston's - VERY similar menu (think spinach artichoke dip, salmon dip, Maui ribeye, etc). Now, with Houston's gone, they are the place to go if you are craving the Houston's experience. (Jack Mahoney, you WERE the Houston's experience!) The calamari was perfectly cooked with a nice red sauce. Salmon dip is not touted as smoked salmon dip like Houston's, but it was good in its own right. The French dip sandwich was huge! I only ate half and ate the rest the next day (after midnight counts as the next day, right?) Next time I would ask for additional horseradish on the side. The cheeseburger was on a beautifully glossy brioche bun with gussied up thousand island and was also delicious. Our waiter was a good waiter, but not as polished as Houston's servers. He had the tendency to come RIGHT after the dish was brought to our table by the runner to ask how it was. ("I don't know - let me try it first and I'll let you know" is what I wanted to say lol) But he was just trying to be attentive, and he was young. No biggie. read more

Met my wife and young daughter there after work for a treat dinner out. The restaurant is clean and well kept the staff was friendly and helpful. Our server must have been new and had to make multiple trips to ask questions which is fine but most of the questions should have been easy to answer. It is disappointing when a restaurant doesn't have anything for kids and the lack of a physical child's menu and crayons seems like a weird place to try and save 25 cents. The food was mostly good, I had the filet kabobs which were undercooked and a couple of pieces sinew which I could not eat. We had a side of Mac and cheese which was awful, clearly reheated and the cheese was watery clumps. With tip dinner was pretty close to $200 for 2 adults and a toddler, so not cheap and at that price point I expect better than that. read more

Tonight the wife and I celebrated 30 yrs of marriage (I know, crazy being with one person that long ;) ). So I made reservations for the evening. That specific process was very easy, no hoops to jump thru so thanks for that. We were promptly seated and our server, Nathan, came over introduced himself and chatted with us about the specials. Er started with thw avocado bomb, a beautifully constructed avocado shell thinly sliced hiding a delectable crab salad, ahi tuna. The picture doesnt do it justice, because we started eating it before taking the photo. Think of it as 'deconstructed'.The wife decided on the steak brazzo in a Madeira sauce. The meat was cooked perfectly, the sauce had a smokiness to it delicious. I had the filet mignon with lemon and reggiano broccoli. The cook on the steak was melt in your mouth perfection, the reggiano sauce was lemony, tart, a perfect accompaniment to the broccoli. Paired with a bottle of Flowers Pinot Noir making the dinner complete. We topped it off with a slice of Key lime pie for dessert, compliments of the house. Other than the decent service, the food was atrocious. The smoked salmon dip was oddly sweet. We had some hope for avocado bomb, but the crab mix was gag-worthy and the tuna they're using is like a jam. We ordered the ribeye Maui entree, which wasn't our first choice as they ran out of the filet mignon. Stopped by J. Alexander's for lunch while finishing up Christmas shopping with my mother. Excuse the pictures, the lighting was pretty dim inside. Even though the restaurant was very crowded, I didn't feel like that impacted the service and casual ambiance. The hostess was welcoming and gave us an accurate wait time. We were told it'd be a 30min wait and I believe we were sitting at our tables within 25min. Our waitress, Taylor R., was also hospitable and attentive. When my mother asked if she could get a green tea cocktail (not listed on their menu), Taylor didn't hesitate to go by the bar and ask if they could make it, rather than shooting her down. Luckily, they were able to make it and it was delicious! For the food, we ordered the Spinach con Queso as an appetizer, Chicken tenders with double broccoli and the Grilled salmon with a loaded baked potato and broccoli (grilled shrimp added). There was great timing between getting the appetizer and our main entrees. The food was hot and very flavorful. We ended with the Key Lime pie. When we arrived our table was ready. We were served immediately after seated. We were so amazed with how fast the food was coming out the kitchen. We ordered and within 10 minutes we had our appetizers at the table and main course ordered. We really value a restaurant that respects the guests time. Also the food was good. Out of everything we ate, the calamari and Hong Kong shrimp were the best. We will return and look forward to trying something different. The only poor interaction we had was the hostess was not friendly, she was very short with us. Also our server was not attentive and very short with us. Other than those two women everyone else was attentive when they came around to refill our water glasses or deliver our food. I'll start with 3 of 4 entrees were good. The Cajun Trout was not. It was tough and seemed to be either a frozen product OR overcooked. The food came all at the wrong time. Prime Rib arrived first and one appetizer, then my salad arrived, my entree came with the salad and my friends Ahi arrived, then last came my wife's trout. Our appetizer calamari still had not arrived, so we just cancelled that. This is not a cheap restaurant, but when they do a good job, the food is very good with big portions, good value. The appetizers and salads must arrive first. We had drinks and a bottle of wine, all good. The drink was a full pour, Gentleman Jack on the rocks appeared to be a 3 ounce pour, good value! The service was very friendly, but clearly not technically proficient or efficient. Overall VERY friendly and most of the food was very good, with one exception. It was busy and the night before Mothers Day? They were not ready for the busy night and it's hard to return to a place that cannot bring food for 4 in the correct order. You cannot bring entrees, then salads and forget the appetizer and get a good review? Just a suggestion for the management. When the appetizer was still not there after everything else arrived, don't let us cancel it. Bring it and make it on the house! Went for Easter lunch. It was excellent. Food, service and ambiance all a TEN! They had a nice crowd but we had reservations and we were seated immediately. We ordered drinks and queso first. I had a Lemon Drop that was fantastic. The queso was hot and fresh and the chips were warm too. I ordered crab cakes with Mac and cheese. Son ordered BBQ Salmon and wild rice/orzo and husband had Mahi. Heads up...the orzo is a cold pasta salad so if you want something hot don't order that. It's been years since I've eaten at J. Alexander's so I decided to stop in for lunch. The parking lot was full so we expected a little bit of a wait. Surprisingly, we were seated at a table right away. We were also greeted by a server right away. We ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich with fries and slaw and the Ribeye with a loaded baked potato. For dessert, we shared the chocolate cake with ice cream. The wait time for food was not extensive. The food was actually better than our expectations (considering we eat out a lot). The portions were huge and prices are we expected.
