    McEwens salad
    Kandis B.

The service tonight was stand out! We sat at a high top and I wish I had remembered our servers name the recipe reads PMS... She was wonderful and well versed as well as enthusiastic about the food. Our meal was so fresh. We each started with a salad. A wedge, a Cesar and the McEwens house, sans cucumbers! Very fresh and each unique and amazing! Ambiance was laid back and chill and not too busy. Very clean. Our meals came out fresh and warm without a long wait. I had the amazing sweet potato catfish with greens and Mac n cheese, it was excellent. My daughter had the baked chicken with rice and green beans and my guy had the sea bass! We finished the night with the bread pudding! We each throughly enjoyed our dining experience and look forward to our next visit. Mcewens is a local staple and consistently turns out reliably great meals.

We spent time in Memphis in October. We wanted a special place to celebrate and found McEwen's. It is such a cozy and welcoming place. The staff was great. Friendly, engaging and efficient. Bert, one of the owners was amazing. He made us feel like part of the family. The food was also incredible. My husband had wanted a steak for his birthday and he got a great one. The food was so good in fact we ate there 3 times in 2 days! No one laughed at us, they just welcomed back in. If we are ever back in Memphis we are definitely going back to McEwan's!

I went there for lunch. The cabbage and bacon soup was a special. It had potential, but needed more seasoning. I ordered the Grilled Atlanta Salmon lunch special. It was seasoned with miso and pecan glaze, which was delicious. I got fried okra and mashed potatoes as the side. I got water as my drink and it was the most foul tasting tap water that I have every tried in my life. The service was just ok. The server, Grace, seemed to be more warm & friendly to everyone else in the building. I had to ask for a straw and for some reason they only have Cholula hot sauce, but no other hot sauce's like Texas Pete or Crystal Hot Sauce. You can give then a try, but it's nothing to write home about.

Food: was amazing everything we tried was great. There were 3 of us so we tried different things and wow. Great! Service: also amazing. They were interactive and joking with us. A lot of places just want you in and out Ambiance: we sat in the bar area which was actually nice and very cozy almost like a speak easy no

Amazing! My team and I visited for lunch not long after they opened. The ambiance was great, the manager and service staff were prompt and friendly, and the food was 10/10.

Redfish over polenta w a Roasted Garlic and Crab Sauce w charred Broccolini

Out of towner here for business. Tried McEwens downtown on a Saturday night. 5:30 PM and restaurant was empty. We sat down and were great by our server who was friendly and took our drink order and quickly returned with our drinks. We ordered appetizers of Baked Brie and Short-rib Pasta. The baked brie was very good, warm and soft inside a crispy puff pastry. Served w crostini, blueberry compote, honey and arugula! Altogether in one bite it was delicious. All the different flavors complimented the brie!! The Short-rib Pasta was very good! House made pasta shaped the size of a nickel. The short-rib and the sauce/reduction coated the pasta. Perfectly cooked fall apart short-rib chunks were plentiful. My main course was Redfish over Polenta with charred broccolini! I almost always get Redfish when I can since the west coast rarely has redfish. The sauce was a light garlic and crab cream sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly and the silky sauce was a great addition to the fish and polenta! The interior is bistro style in a brick walled building!! I recommend McEwens if you are looking for a nice meal!

I was there with a large group enjoying a very nice evening dinner after watching the march of the ducks at the Peabody Hotel where it was an easy walk. We were seated in a large room which was able to handle the 40+ of us attending. Our offering of food was limited to fish, chicken, vegetarian and meat. I ordered the redfish served with mixed vegetables and green beans with minced garlic. The meal was very good as well as the service. Highly recommend.

Popped in here for lunch and immediately knew I'd try the Friday catfish lunch special. I love a restaurant that's flexible on changing up the sides, and McEwen's doesn't charge extra for it. The cornmeal fried catfish was extremely delicious! The server is sweet and extremely helpful in giving me the tartar sauce to go. I will definitely come back just to have it again.

This cute little spot in downtown Memphis was a great place to stop for dinner. I got the Angst Hemingway cocktail which was really delicious. For my meal, the grilled tenderloin with potatoes and asparagus was good. The potatoes and asparagus were well prepared. The beef was just a little undersalted, in my opinion and the demiglace needed a little more seasoning as well. I finished with the banana cream pie which was also lacking a bit in the flavor department. The staff here were super helpful and responsive, answered questions and were attentive and friendly.

Great tasting food and service. Nice atmosphere for a social meal or drink or can even be a romantic outing. I've visited a few times now and everytime there has been no complaints.

Fried green tomatoes with crab slaw which

Really glad we found this place while we were in town. Since we were on a little vacation we definitely took the approach of trying a bunch of stuff. Started off with the special Fried Green tomato's. They were topped with some crab slaw which was ok but since I don't love crab I would have just been happy with the tomatoes alone. We each got a different salad (peach and goat cheese & a feta with dried cherries one) and both were great! I could have just eaten the peach and goat cheese one as a meal (if it was slightly bigger; the menu says pear but I swear they were peaches). For mains we did the ribeye and tenderloin. Both were good. There were also a LOT of fish options but since we live on the gulf coast where we have a lot of fish options we passed on anything fish. Overall service and drinks were also good. The only small downside was the biscuits where I just wanted them to come out early vs with my main and I wanted a little bit of butter to go on them.

    Mixed greens feta, figs salad

Wonderful dinner New Year's Eve! I had crab bisque, very creamy and tasty, followed by pan-seared halibut in lobster cream sauce with smoky broccolini and bacon leek polenta. The flavors melted on my palate.... Hubby had mixed green salad w figs, feta, walnuts and beet vinaigrette. Then short rib pasta. Although it was considered a small plate, it was a sizable portion. We were full from the delicious dim meals so passed on dessert. We loved the coziness of the side dining room and service was well oiled machine . A lovely evening

I was advised that the Bloody Mary would come with bacon. In the interim, we enjoyed munching on their signature popcorn. However, when it arrived (20 minutes later), it did not have it. I asked the server about it and the bartender quickly rectified the situation and added 3 green olives. My friend that ordered the prosecco thought it was fine. However, the friend that ordered the espresso martini was shocked by the presentation. First it was creamy white in color and the flavor was not quite right. It had an odd twang and not at all reminiscent of a typical espresso martini. My friends ordered the breakfast Mexican pizza and were pleased overall. I ordered the huevos rancheros breakfast hash and it was perfectly portioned and seasoned. Not too spicy and just the right amount of flair. Let me start by saying this: I truly enjoy this restaurant. The atmosphere is unique, the concept is fun, and historically the food and service have been reliable. That's exactly why this experience stood out so much. For a party of our size, we would have preferred seating toward the back of the restaurant where it was noticeably warmer and more comfortable. Instead, we were seated in an area that felt a bit chilly, which set the tone for the evening. The bigger issue, however, was with the food and service execution. Four dishes out of our party of twelve were essentially untouched. Two scallop entrées and the Steak Frites were overcooked, tough, and unfortunately inedible. The special ribeye of the night--the most expensive entrée--was also not finished. What concerned me most was that no one from the service team paused to read the table or ask why multiple plates remained full. Only one dish was removed, and there was no follow-up conversation about the others. We spent over $800 that evening, including drinks, appetizers, sides, and desserts, so expectations for attentiveness and quality were understandably higher. When a table leaves several entrées uneaten, that's usually a signal worth acknowledging. After the visit, on January 9, 2025, I took the time to provide feedback privately through OpenTable in the hope that management would review it and respond. Unfortunately, I never received any acknowledgment. Even a brief reply would have gone a long way. Silence, in this case, was disappointing and felt like a missed opportunity to demonstrate care and accountability. I'm sharing this feedback because I believe in the restaurant and want to see it succeed. I work in a customer-facing industry myself, and I know firsthand how small service touches--checking in, asking questions, and following up--can make the difference between a good experience and one that keeps guests coming back. I genuinely hope this was just an off night. I would still consider returning, but I do hope the level of attentiveness and follow-through improves.

I do believe C and I have only been here once as a couple. It did not go well at all, so we have not been back together, as she is holding a bit of a grudge. It's a long story but it all ties back to service. That night we had the worst table in the building and service was spotty at best. Food was still pretty good, just whole ass annoyed by the entirety of the rest of the experience. I am lucky enough to be able to be taken to/host dinner with clients and manufacturers a good bit. They like places like this so I get by ever so often. Gotta love expensed meals!!! Tehehe I like the open kitchen concept they have and the bar is really cool. The metal shelves at the bar that store the booze are bad ass. It's warm and cozy and has a great vibe overall. The last time we sat on the enclosed patio. I had not sat out there before. I think the larger tables all go out there. We had seven and there was another group of about twenty in the same room with us. Food ranges from fairly good to fucking great. I've never had anything bad here, but a few sighs have been had, mostly by misunderstood expectations of what I was getting I would say. So, quite possibly I am the problem. As with most of my problems, actually... The oysters Rockefeller are very different from the norm. Fried oysters on a side of spinach. That's what it seems like. I ate it up, don't get me wrong. I did just switch to only fried oysters after the first one. No need wasting stomach space on spinach. Charbroiled oysters is always a good move and the preparation remains traditional on that one. I do find the oysters to be quite massive and hard to chew the whole thing at once. Cutting them just seems silly though. Steaks are prepared very well and to your liking each time. I have never had a bad one. Good flavor too. I am going to spring on the Hawaiian Ribeye the next time I go on my dime. It's a classic that I remember from Steak and Ale as well as Houston's. Both now gone from Memphis. I like the she crab soup an awful lot, and just about every entree I have had here is killer. You really cannot go wrong with the food. Just order something you normally like and boom. I will also say this. The short ribs I had last time were some of the best I have ever had. Bravo on that! Additionally, I had two giant pieces for like $40! I could only eat one of them after all of the appetizers. Oh.... Yea. They have a hot lobster roll that is good! You don't see that in Memphis very often!! Get you some. Wait.... Lamb Lollipops. They have evolved some of the years but they have really good lamb chops. They used to be the exact same dish as their sister concepts of Itta Bena, BB Kings, and Lafayette's. I am not sure if the whole family still has the old version or not. Here it has changed a good bit. As I write this, I crave it.... Ugh. Damn your foods and your seductive prowess food skills! Lastly, Tommy Peters did great things for this city's food scene. I am sad that he is gone but I know he was proud of this one! Ok. That's enough, Adam.... No one reads this crap anyway. '26 - 48
