This place saved us from a total disaster of a breakfast over at Sugar Grits. We had to leave sugar grits because they never came over to serve us. Then we saw a cockroach so we left and came here. The food was GREAT! It came out pretty quickly and our server was very attentive. The fun bubbly ambiance was fun to look at. Such weird decor but I liked it haha! This is an oldie but goodie when I first started doing downtown diner week this was one of my first places and I have to say it's not like it used to be. My server was really kind and very quick. However, it was hard to enjoy the silence because of the cooks in the back swearing. Let's talk about the food, not as much bang for your buck but it was tasty the buffalo chicken dip with wonton chips was really good. It reminds me of the chicken, buffalo eggrolls that I crave every blue moon. The second course was chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and a gravy with maple sauce. The steak was OK but that maple gravy on the mashed potatoes was fire! This should be a staple on their menu! My choice of dessert was bread pudding a couple slices. From the moment we walked in, the staff displayed a disrespectful demeanor, and the service was extremely poor. When I asked to speak with a manager, our server went to the back and began gossiping with the cook and other staff members about my concerns instead of addressing them professionally. She spoke loudly enough for both me and other customers to hear, expressing her disagreement with my complaint. I was walking by, after leaving the Peabody, and this young woman started hollering at me that I needed a martini. That is how it started. She also mentioned that it was Martini Monday, and that martinis were $6. I was walking by with a friend and we were heading to a shop up the street. Well, I started thinking, maybe I DO need a martini. I had also just walked 14,000 steps all over Memphis in the afternoon and looked a hot mess, but she insisted. ALLLLL their martinis were $6 and they are not making them with bottom shelf liquors. I had a Penicillin and a Bubble Bath. One is made with Patron and the other with Ketel One. They were perfectly balanced and cold. I don't typically go for really sweet drinks but when in Memphis. Plus these were not candy sweet, they were made with good ingredients and on the sweeter side. They were delighful. As was the service. I don't remember the other girls name, who brought me in, but she and Ashely were great. It wasn't busy and we chatted a bit. Went to Automatic Slim's because it had been years and USED to be one of my fav brunch spots. It's not crowded when I get there, but service is slow. I order my usual. Takes a long time to come out and it's disgusting. They gave me a baby redfish or just a piece of it. Figured maybe that was the cost of inflation. My red velvet pancakes came out and my 3 yo said "What is that?" They were thin and pink. Not at all what we normally eat. But I figured she would pour syrup all over them and not care. After she played around in them, I tasted one. It was horrible. Asked the waitress to swap it for a plain waffle. When it finally came out, after a long wait, I just boxed it up and left. We had a wonderful experience at this place! We stopped in before the Matt Rife comedy show and started with these adorable martinis,(we got to keep the ducks). Oddly in this area there are very few places to do brunch that we could find... so we came here 2 days in a row. The first thing that stood out is the friendly service, it was a bit slooooooooow our second day there BUT there were only two young ladies handling WAY more tables than they should. The folks line up for this place, so expect to wait. Food is okay. I had the breakfast casserole/bacon day 1 and Blueberry Pancakes day 2. Both were good, it was a little frustrating when I ordered my bacon crispy and it was brought out very lightly cooked. Stopped in for Sunday brunch around 2:00, and the place was busy. With a quick glance around I v CB oils see mimosa towers and many people enjoying the drink specials for the day. I had the BBQ brisket benne. It is served up on a delicious biscuit instead of an English muffin and as you can see perfectly poached eggs waiting to let that runny yolk flow. The flavor was good, though I'm only giving 4 stars because of the temperature of the food. Potatoes were hot the rest was just barely warm. After seeing a few shows about what may happen to food that is sent back, I don't complain, unless I do so at the end of the meal as feedback. We decided to visit Automatic Slim after enjoying another "Staycation" downtown. We arrived around 10am and there was a wait. We were told that the wait could take up to 30 minutes and that we had to wait outside. Thankfully, it only took about 15 minutes to get seated. Our server was very friendly and prompt. We decided to enjoy the $3 mimosas that were offered along with their coffee which was pretty good. I chose the blueberry pancakes and wanted to try the vegetable frittata. The texture of the pancakes were different, but they were pretty good! The vegetable frittata was pretty good and was served with potatoes. The portions were huge, which made my husband extremely happy. The restaurant was small, but they tried to follow COVID protocols to their best ability. All of the staff wore masks and there were signs around the restaurant requiring guests to wear their mask at all times unless they were still eating or drinking. Such a wonderful day for brunch. My party of 3 enjoyed a great time at Automatic Slim's. We dined in on a Saturday morning, and the wait was not long at all. Maybe 15-20 minutes. We had already looked at the menu, so we knew exactly what we wanted to eat. Our waitress was very attentive and generous in ensuring that we were satisfied. The decor inside is super funky in a good way! They have a nice upstairs for larger parties. Pretty decent sized space and about 80 percent filled but no one close to each other. Made a reservation and was promptly seated. We ordered the banana fosters French toast and blueberry pancakes with a side of eggs. Little sad that my French toast came with 3 half pieces. What happened to my other piece? It looked like regular bread that's cut in half so either someone ate it or they were being shady with the portion size. The eggs were cold, the pancake was very basic and had 3 tiny banana slices on top and the grits had a "chlorine-like" taste to them. I asked my friends to taste the grits and they agreed that something was off about the taste. After everyone was done eating we were brought the bill and noticed post payment that there's a 2.5% surcharge for using a credit card. The bathroom was also very dirty. I've been in Memphis for ~11 years and have been to Automatic Slim's a time or two, and though no one has ever directly recommended or suggested Automatic Slim's, I always got the sense that it was one of the better places to go to downtown and in Memphis overall. I should've taken more of a note that no one recommended it to me because after several attempts, I'm just wholly unimpressed. It's not that anything was bad, but it's definitely the case that most things were underwhelming. I've had both the Automatic Omelet and Chicken & Waffles, and neither were would I would expect from a great place. The omelet was just a massive egg and some random ingredients, including massive chunks of meat, thrown in ... rather than an actually carefully made cooked omelet with ingredients that blended in. I ended up just trying to make a scramble because that was most logical given what was delivered. The chicken with the waffles was dry, and the waffle wasn't fully cooked. The mimosas are decent but definitely lean towards too much orange juice. On top of that, they charge people processing fees to use credit cards. That's unnecessary and not something that should be passed onto customers. Things like that never make customers feel valued and certainly don't help put a positive spin on negative experiences (or a bow on positive experiences either). I think from this point out, we'll definitely head elsewhere for brunch... read more

They also have Cinnamon toast and Red Velvet. - Great seating options - but get there before 11am ! They were so sweet, I couldn't finish them (a mimosa and French 75). - The waffle and hash browns should have been cooked longer - The red fish dish is not filling - they only give you a portion of fish that is less than half of a full filet .
