I've been in Memphis for ~11 years and have been to Automatic Slim's a time or two, and though no one has ever directly recommended or suggested Automatic Slim's, I always got the sense that it was one of the better places to go to downtown and in Memphis overall. I should've taken more of a note that no one recommended it to me because after several attempts, I'm just wholly unimpressed. It's not that anything was bad, but it's definitely the case that most things were underwhelming. I've had both the Automatic Omelet and Chicken & Waffles, and neither were would I would expect from a great place. The omelet was just a massive egg and some random ingredients, including massive chunks of meat, thrown in ... rather than an actually carefully made cooked omelet with ingredients that blended in. I ended up just trying to make a scramble because that was most logical given what was delivered. The chicken with the waffles was dry, and the waffle wasn't fully cooked. The mimosas are decent but definitely lean towards too much orange juice. On top of that, they charge people processing fees to use credit cards. That's unnecessary and not something that should be passed onto customers. Things like that never make customers feel valued and certainly don't help put a positive spin on negative experiences (or a bow on positive experiences either). I went for a girls day out brunch .. Reasons to go : - Variety of waffle and pancake options ... I had the Grand Marnie waffles . They were delicious! They also have Cinnamon toast and Red Velvet. - Great seating options - but get there before 11am ! We had a great seat at the top , in the middle .. perfect for people watching lol ! - Friendly staff ! - The food comes out really quick! - Parking is close by Reasons that gave me pause : - Safety - to no fault of their own , it's a lot of undesirables walking around . Be safe . - The drinks were weak ....really weak . They were so sweet, I couldn't finish them (a mimosa and French 75). - The waffle and hash browns should have been cooked longer - The red fish dish is not filling - they only give you a portion of fish that is less than half of a full filet . I ordered this as my full meal and was still hungry, so I ordered a waffle . - A manager came to our table to check us out. She didn't have a name tag or anything on .. I honestly thought she was a customer wanting to take my card .. When I politely stopped them to ask for the change, they said to me, "Oh it was only a few cents but I'll get it for you"...... Some things you should NEVER say in front of a guest!! I enjoy coming here for brunch on weekends because no matter how full it looks, we get seated every time. It's a small location so the seating on the first floor is a bit tight but the second floor has more room. My food has always come semi-quickly with no mistakes. Automatic Slim's is a gastropub with a southern flare. I stopped by for brunch which attracts a stylish young crowd. The restaurant has two levels of seating and the servers are quite attentive, but the location is narrow so probably not best for large groups. We enjoyed the mimosa "bong" which for $34 contains two bottles of champagne and as much or little orange juice as you like. Several in the party ordered the red fish(I think it's actually tilapia) with cheese grits and spinach. The fish was seasoned to perfection and the cheese grits were delicious, but the spinach was very salty. The Oreo waffle came out cold, but the chicken and waffles were cooked perfectly. We wanted to try the brunch at Automatic Slims. We had a 45 minute wait, but it did not take 45 minutes. They were short handed, but that did not stop our server from making sure we taking care of. Our food was good and we all tried to get different things to test out. The blackened salmon & and red fish were good. The cinnamon waffles were great, but my daughter thought they were a little sweet. It was very laid back & busy. Sometimes I felt like we were yelling, but it's just a busy place. It was clean overall, but I'm not sure about the restroom b/c I didn't have to visit it. Would recommend. read more

This was my first time going to Automatic Slim's and I can't say I have a reason to go back. I ordered red velvet waffles. Instead of using red velvet cake batter, they used regular pancake mix and a couple drops of red food coloring??? Whatever I received was pink and flavorless, not at all red velvet. Icing on the cake for me was the scrambled eggs with cheese that I ordered. No cheese was there but egg shells were. No one at my table enjoyed their meals. Good music and location is about all they have going. I ordered vodka with a wedge of lemon. No lemons. The bartender/waiter said he squeezed all of them for fresh juice. My husband and I went there for breakfast on a Saturday morning. We both ordered brunch dishes, food is pretty good. Biscuits are very fluffy and the cheesy grits are amazing. However, like some other reviews mention there is an automatic 20% gratuity added to your bill when you have more than 1 person dining. (Hence the name "automatic") We usually tip 20% wherever we go if we have good service. HOWEVER, we did not receive good service here. Our waitress was clearly grumpy and never refilled our drinks. Most of the waitresses had rbf's. My guess is that they know they get that 20% tip, so they don't have to perform good service. Whatever the case, we were going to only tip 10%. When they brought us the check it already had the 20% added. On the BOTTOM of the front door there's a sign that says parties of 2 or more have automatic slims 20% gratuity, and there's a little blurb on the table stand. This restaurant was within walking distance of my hotel in downtown Memphis and was perfect for that due to lack of parking. There is a sign by the door when you immediately walk in stating that they charge 20% gratuity for parties of two or more, which was pretty absurd to me but oh well. The use of space downstairs and upstairs in the restaurant was wise as the space is not as spacious. There's not a ton of options available on the brunch/breakfast menu but the portion size of the food is decent. The food was just okay, but I was turned off by the up charge. For a plate of eggs, bacon, hash browns and three pancakes cost me $33.10. Yes ridiculous! This included a 20% automatic gratuity, 2.5% debit/credit card fee (even if your paying with cash) plus tax. This was my first time dining at Automatic Slim's and I must say it was an AWESOME experience. Walking through the door hearing the down home Southern music, I just knew that it would be. The ambiance and decor is so comfy and inviting. Diners have the option to choose if they want to eat upstairs or down (I chose up to view the full establishment). The servers were very prompt and professional. They started us off with water automatically and from there you can add to the order. They offer delicious mimosas for $2.50 or you can order a 100 oz jar for 34.00 if you are with a group. I ordered the BBQ Brisket Benedict and it was amazing!!!! The prices are reasonable for all menu items. If you are in the downtown area you should definitely stop by. My husband and I both had dinner. Wait staff very pleasant snd the food was good but don't go here expecting any liquor in a drink. My martini was served 2/3 full glass while i saw all others full. When I asked bartender to rectify she stated different martinis have different amounts. Visited on a Saturday for brunch with 2 friends. The wait was about 30-35 minutes for us to be seated. Once we were seated, we were automatically served water until our waiter could get our drink/food orders. There was no ice as the ice machine was down. That was a bummer. It didn't take long for him to come by and get our orders, but then we did wait some time before we received our food. One friend ordered the Oreo waffle, sausage links and eggs. She said the waffle was a little dry and her eggs were bland. My other friend ordered the steak and eggs with hash browns. He said it was alright. I ordered the breakfast casserole, and it too was just alright. I think the general consensus was that it was "just alright." This was somewhere none of us had visited before, so we were looking to try something new. The vibe of the place is cool though. I used to work downtown and loved Slims for both lunch and dinner meetings. I hadn't been there in over 10 years and went Saturday night with my family. To my surprise , there wasn't a single patron in the restaurant or even at the bar at 6pm. Now I know why ... it was just an awful experience. I'm not even going to go into detail. But I eat out several times a week and have been to almost anywhere you can eat in Shelby County from the biggest dives to the absolute finest this city has to offer. I almost never leave a negative review but rather leave mostly positive reviews as you can see in my profile. This was just so, so disappointing ( and gross) ... we actually left, they comped our food because of the issues. We never ate it. The people were nice , that wasn't an issue. I feel bad for leaving such a bad review but it's a necessary PSA in this case (Maybe brunch is their thing now ... I'm told. It's def not dinner) read more

The best part about brunch as the $3 mimosas! Parking as easy to find and there was no wait when we arrived. We were seated upstairs in what appeared to be the darkest part of the restaurant (cute if you're going for a romantic ambiance) i ordered the slim scramble and disappointedly it did not come with any sides and my bestfriend and i decided to spilt a blueberry waffle (not on the menu but if you ask they'll do it). The scramble was decent it included chorizo, hash browns, red peppers and a savory sauce on top but it was like flavor for me. The blueberry waffle was just a basic waffle with blueberries on top i wish they would have put them inside of the waffle. Having not been in years, we decided to give it a go since we were enjoying a staycation at The Peabody across the street. Despite a promising menu, the experience was disappointing. Firstly, when we called to ask about making a reservation, whoever answered said "No it's walk in only" and hung up on us. I excused that as their being busy. But when we arrived shortly thereafter, there was only one table in the restaurant. We sat on their patio, which was bustling with people in all the wrong ways (boom boxes, sketchiness, lots of weed smoking, tons of sirens... not A.S.'s fault, obviously, but worth noting for patrons considering the patio). We had 2 martinis and fried pickles for an appetizer; all were decent but nothing extraordinary. I ordered the hot salad (fried green tomatoes with crab meat) and my companion ordered the crab cakes. Her crab cakes were (again) decent, but there was significantly more breading than crab. My salad included fried ripe/red tomatoes, and they looked like they had been cooked in grease that wasn't hot enough. They were a greasy, soggy, disgusting mess. The waitress took them back and I ordered tomato bisque and another salad (no blue cheese). They came out and the salad was covered in blue cheese. I still needed a clean fork and I didn't want to be *that* Karen, so I ate it without complaint. The waitress came and sat down with us, which was only mildly problematic/inappropriate ... but then she removed her mask, which was not okay. In all, it was an $85 meal (20% gratuity automatically applied) with lack-luster food and drinks, mediocre service, and two hours of unsavory entertainment. read more

After Nate scratched our name, Chris stepped in and resolved the issue; getting us seated and served quickly. The FOOD: I had the Redfish and grits and it was absolutely delightful!!!!! I sampled a bit of my cousins cinnamon roll waffle and it too was perfect. The cheese grits were cooked and seasoned to perfection and the spinach was a perfect touch. First time at this restaurant was a good experience. The service was great. The host sat us close to the door at first but my wife was cold so she kindly reseated us upstairs. They have upstairs and downstairs seating. The atmosphere is kinda electric, the place is in high demand being a downtown restaurant. There was a bit of a wait, so I suggest making reservations if you're in a group. They will pull tables together to accommodate group seating. The food was good and the menu is affordable and there are a nice amount of options to choose from. They have mimosas and other drink specials for brunch also. I will definitely go back again. Gave four stars because downtown parking can be kinda hectic. read more
