My wife and I took our son to celebrate his graduation from the University of Memphis. Amelia Gene's is his favorite restaurant and he has been a few times to celebrate other special occasions. This was the first visit for my wife and I but it will not be the last. Kelsie Nicholson was our server, who my son commented was "his favorite" based on past experiences. Kelsie was knowledgeable about all aspects of the menu and paid attention to our allergy restrictions. She was also helpful in navigating the tasty options for all five courses of our meal with thoughtful suggestions and great advice. The vibe of the restaurant was special and timeless but not dated. The mood was lively with a nice selection of low volume but energetic music played on the speaker system. The biscuits were excellent, my son's Blackberry Oysters were perfect, the cheese cart was an adventure and the desserts were incredible! Roasted Duck, Short Rib and Filet were our entrees and we also had a Raviolo and Lumache for our pasta course. Five stars all the way around for this fantastic experience! Have you heard the story of The Shed at Dulwich? It was a faux restaurant that was hyped on social media despite not having a real presence. When pressed, it opened for a few diners, serving frozen meals nicely plated, passing the off as homemade and giving them bougie names at an elevated price point. I am waiting for Amelia Gene to let us in on the prank that they are the second iteration of The Shed. Ambiance and service were good, but the food and price point were outrageous. Overall, food was barely mediocre. Not one entree was inspired or merited more than 4/10 stars. Potato fondue was mashed potatoes, the biscuits were dense and flavorless, but the truly comical moment of the evening was when they brought my 6'6 husband's ravioli to him. $18 for one ravioli that (he said) was *not even good*. I am shocked at the positive reviews and overall rating Amelia Gene's has received. Maybe we hit it on a very off night? Maybe we don't get "it"? Either way it's not for us. On the bright side, I've had weeks of making fun of my husband's face at the sight of the one ravioli, and that's gotta be worth something. read more

Exceptional food and drinks. The fish dishes are perfectly cooked and great portions, we loved the Bee's Knees cocktail as well. The servers were really nice, provided great recommendations. My only constructive feedback is that we didn't receive a starter we asked for. Turns out we didn't need it, but still... was an attention to detail missed. Very pretty restaurant. Excellent service. Quite expensive. We started with ravioli, prawns, burata, asparagus, biscuits, steak tartar, and a 5 cheese sampler plate. The biscuits were really delicious. The steak tartar was very disappointing. I'm sure the steak was good quality but it was so overwhelmed by the spice they used (curry, I think) that you just couldn't taste any steak at all. Everything else was fine but just nothing great. Our entrees were filet mignon and short ribs. Both were very good. Dessert was carrot cake. I didn't love it. Had a ton of crunchy stuff on it that I didn't like. We also had 6 cocktails. All together, it was $675 before a $125 tip for 5 people. Not terrible restaurant by any means, it's also nowhere near worth $160 pp for dinner. Don't see myself going back here. read more

AG's feels like a night out in Italy. I love that it's dimly lit and has intimate settings. Our service was superb and the food was great. The homemade biscuits & honey butter were our favorite!! Mouthwatering buttery goodness! I would come back just for those. The chef sent us a turnip soup that was phenomenal. I hope it gets added to the menu. The prawn appetizer was delicious. Came here to celebrate a birthday and had an absolutely amazing experience. The food and service were both outstanding. The architecture alone is stunning, beautifully blending the building's former industrial/welding roots with elegant ambient lighting. The roasted carrot soup as the amuse bouche was delicious. Simmered with whole peppercorn and puréed to a thick pulpy soup. We ordered the Black Seabass and the Dry Aged Prime Bone in New York strip steak with beef grease popovers. Both entrees were decent with flavor profile and a reflection of a small town charm and interpretation of fine dining. Wow, how can I give this place a compliment that measures up to the experience? My husband and I came for a date night. The place is in a rustic old mill building that's been renovated into a high class modern vibe. The ambiance is cozy, romantic and elegant. The service is outstanding, it's the best version of high quality service in the food industry you could expect. Servers are well dressed with good posture and manners. Forks were changed out, waters filled, server came by at all the right times, not a single thing was unaccounted for. We had a glass of wine and their old fashioned black coffee drink which was so smooth and delicious. To start we had the cheese sample (I cannot remember all the cheeses) but the server cut them at our table and they were paired with guava paste, bread crackers and candied walnuts. The cheeses were so interesting and fresh. I am a huge oyster fan, and these oysters were hands down the best I've ever had. We were told the oysters are from the north East (possibly Maine) and the oyster itself was sweet with a green creamy sauce. Next we had the duck and monkfish. I have to admit I am not a huge duck fan but this meal was incredible. My favorite was the monkfish. Thank you for making our experience incredible. Amelia Gene's was a great date night experience for us. The service was excellent, and the drinks were too. It is a bit pricey, though, even compared to other local fine dining spots. We started with the caviar beignet and the golden potato fondue. This was my first time trying caviar and black truffle. I would 100% get the potato fondue again- it was one of the best potato dishes I've had. I wouldn't recommend the caviar beignet though, as I don't think it's a great value at $30 for a bite. Then, we got the tempura squash blossoms and the steak tartare. Both were excellent and are definitely worth a try. I never knew raw steak could be so delicious! For the pasta course, we went with the bucatini and the agnolotti. We both loved the bucatini with its complex flavors of saffron and white tomato. My girlfriend enjoyed the agnolotti, but I found it far too bitter with the almonds and rabe, and I found that it had very little of the delicious filling. For the mains, we got the duck and the sea bass. I've been cursed lately with getting undercooked duck fat, but Amelia did it right. The leg in particular was delicious and crispy. I enjoyed all three sauces on it. The sea bass was also very good. These chanterelles were the best I've had and tasted smokey to me. For dessert, we tried the salted caramel crème brûlée and the local peach cobbler. We were both let down by the cobbler, and my girlfriend did not care for the crème brûlée, either. I thought the crème could have used more of the tart cherry sauce, but I enjoyed it overall. We each had a couple cocktails and they were all delicious. The sazerac is the best I've had. Our total came out to $400, which is about double what I pay at other local date night spots like Erling Jensen and Ecco. I will definitely be back after I have financially recovered. read more

If you have a friend who is a picky eater and just wants steak and fries, please do not take them here. They will complain about the food, the price, everything! Not gonna lie, we went here strictly for one thing, the bone marrow. But sadly we were told it is no longer a thing, so we were bummed but decided to have a drink instead. Their "Dirty Gibson" is quite literally the best cocktail I've ever had. Bar none. Vodka, gin, cauliflower brine, truffle oil, and tincture of shallot, with fresh chives floating. I do not have the words for how happy this drink made me. Spensyr was just as happy with hers, but I am still thinking of that drink a week later... This was a last-minute dinner choice on a recent trip to Memphis and it turned out to be a fantastic find! Sat at the bar and shared a variety of appetizers (including the buttermilk biscuits, a cheese selection, steak tartare, the prawns, and an unbelievable sweet potato and hummus dish) with my friend, all of which were really delicious. Celebrated my birthday last Wednesday here. Exquisite food! Everything we ate was delicious. I have been wanting to try this awesome place for a long time. Less is more with the different dishes we tried. We began with the Buttermilk Biscuit Tray with butter, pickled veggies and berry preserves. We ordered a tiny two bite croissant with foie gras, sauce and artichoke hearts. Next we shared a Gem salad with ginger dressing. It was fresh and very tasty. Then we experienced our entrees: duck and sea bass. Both were cooked very well and filling. We made sure to save room for dessert. We ate the salted caramel creme brûlée and carrot cake with pistachios. It had six layers and brown sugar in between each layers. The cake was very unique and moist. I did not eat all of it. Also had a cup of Vice and Virtue coffee. It complemented the desserts very well. We took a lot of leftovers home. The ambience is very classic and sophisticated. It has a modern vibe and clean feel. This was my first visit to Amelia Gene's Restaurant in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee. It was a fabulous find that I came across on OpenTable. The atmosphere and aesthetic was charming and warm and outfitted in an old manufacturing plant. They did a fabulous job of integrating the restaurant into the historical space. My server, Makyla, was very knowledgeable about the menu and had a thorough knowledge of the menu. She was warm yet professional. She made me feel relaxed and comfortable. She didn't miss a beat through the entire dinner. Samantha, the sommelier extraordinaire, spoke to me about some of their wine offerings. She was very knowledgeable about wines and pairings. When it came time for dessert, I inquired as to whether or not they had any Hungarian wines. She said she did not think so, but ended up finding the last glass of Royal Tokaji, Late Harvest Hungarian Wine. My dinner began withn Amuse-bouche, chefs gift, a root vegetable soup that was intensely flavorful. I started with an unusual preparation of raw Blackberry Oysters (2), with Cauliflower Soubise, Pickled Cucumber, Bay Leaf. Available year-round, the Blackberry® is raised in bottom cages inshore of Blackberry Hang Oyster Reef in the Chesapeake Bay. Black Sea Bass, White Onion Puree, Caramelized Onions, Brown Butter, with Petals of Brussels Sprouts I enjoyed a glass of this fruit forward and delicious 2023 Domaine de Servans, Côtes du Rhône, Grenache/Syrah, Rhone Valley, France. It paired well with my oysters as well as the brown butter of the Black Sea Bass. Moriah, the dessert elf, came by and did her best to tempt me with an amazing variety of dessert offerings that they had. I decided to stay with a liquid dessert as I had already eaten quite a bit. I enjoyed the last glass they had available of a 2017 ROYAL TOKAJI Aszú 5 Puttonyos, Late Harvest Hungarian Wine. That was my drinkable dessert. I got to visit this region in Hungary five years ago and it is something I will never forget. Intense nose with lots of fruitiness and spice. Great structure and vibrant freshness with flavours of white peach and ripe plums, a perfect balance of richness, crisp acidity and a long finish. Summer was hot, so we began the Aszú berry harvest in early September and continued to pick steadily in the ideal autumn weather. In particular, October provided three textbook weeks for fine quality Aszú, with day after day of early morning mists, afternoon sunshine and drying winds. The Aszú wines show great structure, plenty of botrytis, depth and freshness with excellent complexity, all attributes of long ageing potential. My experience at Amelia Gene's was above expectations. The food was delicious and artfully presented. The staff was professional and friendly. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxing. The combination of everything made for an unforgettable dining experience that I would recommend to anyone visiting the Memphis area. Tonight Dylan (Dillon) did an excellent job of taking care of me, making some solid recommendations on food, and shooting the breeze, mostly talk about Yacht Rock (Steely Dan, Gerry Rafferty). I honestly can't recommend anything to particular because it is all really excellent. I usually get a 3-4 things per meal and it is always wonderful. Tonight I went with the the Lobster Soup which with milk bread which was perfect. I paired that with the Steak tartar app. And for my entree, I went with a super creamy bucatini and the lobster pasta with a cream saffron sauce and some Octo atop it. My husband and I dined here for date night. This is a great fine dining experience. The ambiance and decor are beautiful! The service was friendly and professional. My husband had a smoked salmon appetizer, a special for the night and also served us with a complimentary soup sample before the meal and complimentary chocolates at the end of the meal . For dinner I had the black bass which was fresh , seasoned to perfection and a great portion. My husband had the Wagyu steak , which was flavorful and extremely tender . Other things to note are :the mobile cheese display where they slice the cheeses in front of you as you select the cheeses for a cheese board , a wine connoisseur that comes to your table upon request, valet parking, and the spacious luxury gender neutral restrooms . Got dinner last night at Amelia Gene's and it was truly a delight. The food was luxurious, delicious and dashed with creative flair. They serve french cuisine and in courses. The service was attentive, responsive and overall extremely pleasant. They coursed out the different dishes so that there was a short wait after each dish before the next one came. They also filled our water & brought out our drinks promptly. You could tell someone was keeping your experience in mind at all times without feeling watched. The space was gorgeous, the chandelier was beautiful. It was well lit but also just the perfect amount of moody for a dinner. I faced the kitchen and it was really fun to see it in action. On our server's recommendation, we chose a dish from each section including dessert for 6 total dishes. Each were spectacular, well cooked and throughly delicious. They told us they change their menu seasonally as well. Definitely one the pricer side but it was worth every penny in our book. Will be back soon! read more

Very mixed feelings about this restaurant. I wanted to love it but it just fell short for me. The hostesses were friendly upon arrival and we learned after parking our car on the street with visible smashed car window glass on the ground that the restaurant offered free valet parking so we moved our car bc they said it was hit or miss with robberies and we didn't want to take a chance. I ordered the Boston seafood chowder and my husband ordered the octopus salad for starters. While waiting, they brought a taste of tomato soup. I wasn't impressed. It honestly tasted canned. The chowder was okay. It had a very mild flavor and was room temp. Again, not impressive. The octopus was way tastier. Then for our main course, I ordered the monk fish with a purple sweet potato with jasmine rice. 2 starches. My husband ordered the sea bass w/white onion puree, and carmelized onions. My dish was $40 and his was $48. We mostly eat fish and rarely eat red meat and occasionally chicken at home. I don't like to order what I typically prepare at home and I won't eat chicken out over a certain price point. I hated my fish. It had a very heavy, sticky and salty sauce that overpowered the fish. Thankfully, my husband traded meals with me. His sea bass was better but it didn't really come with sides for $48 as I don't count pureed or carmelized onions as a side and no side choices were available to order on the menu. Between meals our waitress was mia until we were done and she was quick to bring the dessert menu. I ordered the $14 carrot cake to go after asking the waitress how it tasted and how big the slice was, and her telling me it was large enough for 2, and my husband ordered the bread pudding. When they finally brought our desserts 15 minutes later, I was immediately disappointed. It was the smallest piece of carrot cake. I was tempted to send it back but my husband discouraged me. He enjoyed his pudding and ice cream. He said it was very good. When the waitress came, he jokingly said he didn't like his dessert. When we got the bill, our desserts had been comped without us asking. Thank you very much. I told our introverted waitress that he was joking but she didn't get it. While there, I used the unisex bathroom. 1 was out. The bathroom was entirely too dark. I couldn't see myself in the mirror. I don't like dark bathrooms. I couldn't apply lipstick if I wanted to. The floor manager was also not very friendly. I didn't feel a friendly environment nor ate food that I'd come back for. Great ambiance but we weren't paying for ambiance and at that price point, I was not in the least wowed by our food. When we got home, I tried the carrot cake and it wasn't my favorite either. Too sweet and too much cream frosting. Thank God we didn't pay for it. They must have either a listening device at its table or read my nonverbals. read more

Amelia Gene's is one of the more upscale restaurants in downtown Memphis. The atmosphere was impressive, the renovations were done beautifully, the lighting was perfect, and the overall vibe felt elegant yet comfortable. I also appreciated the valet service; even though there was only one valet, he did an excellent job keeping things moving quickly. The hostess was very pleasant and accommodating. Even though we arrived about 20 minutes early for our reservation, she was able to seat us within a few minutes. That was a great start. As a foodie, I was really excited for my first visit. The menu offered a decent selection, though the prices felt high compared to other nice restaurants in the area. For the second course, my salad included avocado -- but unfortunately, it was completely brown all the way through, which was very unappetizing. I let my server, Taylor, know, but her response was minimal and nothing was done to correct it. My main course was the short ribs. The meat itself was tender and flavorful, but the sweet potato and mushroom sides were badly overcooked, almost burnt. Again, when I mentioned it to Taylor, I got the same indifferent response. This lack of attentiveness prompted me to ask for the manager. When the manager came over, she was polite and offered to remake the burnt sides, which I appreciated. Still, by that point, the experience had lost some of its shine. Overall, Amelia Gene's has a lot of potential. It is a beautiful space with a great atmosphere, but the service, attention to the details of the meal, their meal preparation details need to match their prices and upscale reputation. And by the way, our water was never refreshed, but we were asked as we paid our check if we wanted a refresh on the water. read more

Being in a LDR we rarely get the opportunity to celebrate everything that happens to us as it comes so we usually like to splurge a little and wrap everything into one. Ambiance and service was first class. The food was simply not good. I had such high hopes. I asked for medium rare steak. It was pink in the middle but everything around the middle was tough and over salted. Someone joining me had the same opinion of their steak. The salt and rosemary was so overpowering that my mouth was irritated. I couldn't finish the meal. Other apps we ordered were disappointing. The lobster fritters in the corn soup were mushy. However, the Wagyu steak tartar and the biscuits were fantastic. The rosemary in the jam was (again) overpowering. Trust me I enjoy rosemary. I have my own herb garden and I cook with rosemary often. The gulf prawns were bland. The presentation of the prawns was a mess...as if the chef was trying too hard. The carrot cake was divine. Please do better. I want this restaurant to succeed.
