We tried this restaurant for my birthday. Our server was not personable or assertive. We sat without filled water glasses for quite awhile, among other annoyances. Well we thought we'd give it a second look since they didn't impress us on our first visit. So far not so good. Waitress wasn't sure about sashimi vs nigiri availability of the fish and served our bottle of wine without a taste first. We were told there would be a bit of a wait as they were very busy but once our sushi arrived the nigiri didn't have wasabi under the fish as per traditional presentation and one of our diners didn't even get her meal. We were told it was due to a mix up in the kitchen. 15 minutes later her dinner arrived. The waitress then presented us with a card good for one appetizer or free kids meal. That is funny as we will never be back. The Mackerel was subpar, it was dry and not very flavorful. Considering fish is available to be flown in this is just sad. This restaurant try's to be an upscale place but considering how both times they were not able to impress, again we'll never return. My husband and I are big fans of sushi and have eaten it everywhere from the Midwest to Japan but this was unexceptional even for the Midwest. read more

Environment is good, but I think it's little too much. Fancy tablet for sushi and drink display- not much help. Food taste good, but not outstanding. Good service but the environment can sometimes be loud due to their seat arrangements. Maybe they should just add more items to the menu so customers will return. read more

Unfortunately we did not have the best experience with our group of 6. We had to ask for silverware 3 times. Drinks also took forever. When our appetizers were brought we also had to ask for soy sauce- you would think with sushi they would bring it. Our meals were then brought and "an entree was taken by another server" so one meal at our table took an additional 20 minutes. By the time it was brought everyone was done. The waitress said dessert was on her.... well she brought our checks before even asking if we wanted dessert! Therefore we never saw that dessert! After a year of frequenting this restaurant, my husband and I have watched a steady decline of the food quality. Tonight the tempura was thick and soggy inside the rolls. Quality proteins in the meal are being shorted. The Kani kami over loads the dishes in which it is served. For those who do not know, this is simply pollock dressed as crab. The service has never been great. Adequate at best. Being from the Midwest, we expect a more relaxed approach to service. However, Umi lauds itself as a more fine dining experience than it is. While I don't normally criticize, as I applaud all efforts toward great business, i just can't go there anymore. read more

This place is wonderful. The professional and courteous service, the ambiance, the incredible food.. definitely worth the higher price point. My boyfriend and I went here for his birthday and we thoroughly loved the experience. We had the veggie tempura- very good; The miso soup which had a deep and complex flavor; the chicken teriyaki split which was a generous portion; and an unagi and diva roll to finish it off. EXCELLENT service! Beautiful restaurant. Tyler is quite knowledgeable about spirits. Sushi was OK. Way too much rice and too little of the product. Nigiri is probably the way to go and ask for a bowl of rice on the side. You must keep the fish 'supercold' in order to insure freshness. Some of the fish eggs (had 4 types) were just borderline fishy. Sushi is not suppose to have any fishy smell, AT ALL! So it's a Tuesday night, spontaneous time to go out and have a nice sushi dinner at the new hot shot sushi place in southwest. Now, with asakusa now closed, Umi's location is great, close enough to Jefferson point, not too far from the residential oasis of SW FW. The decor is above average, beautifully lit with an electric blue all around the joint, the menus are tablets, the place is clean. Does it need to be though? Because the sushi selection is bold but small: few deluxe and very expensive options. Our drinks came around rather quick, the green tea is very obviously store bought, but really who cares? It was the food that then took 21 minutes to arrive after being ordered. At 7pm. On a Tuesday. Restaurant only half full. They say hunger is the best sauce, the longer you wait the better the taste. Unfortunately the sushi was mindblowingly average. Not terrible in the slightest, but for what we paid, average won't really cut it. We dined at UMI for our anniversary. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. The service was friendly, but not overly effusive. Best of all was the fare. We ordered a number of different sushi rolls and sashimi. All the seafood was very fresh and the blend of flavors with vegetables and sauces was right on target. I would never again order a steak at this Restuarant. The ribeye was thin and served luke warm not that good. Joseph Decuis has a better. cut of steak for a comparable price. Seafood was. excellent. Atmosphere excellent, service was excellent except water glasses were empty several times. Management was responsive and caring: . Private rooms minimums are too high. Appetizers were excellent. Food prep was quick and service was excellent. They only have 1 salad dressing and it's not gluten free. No soups are gluten free? Meal comes with soup or salad no other sides with main course. They did have gluten free soy sauce. Take home bags were grocery bags. Not great for a Restuarant of this caliber. I'll give them another chance but overall experience I would rate as good to excellent. read more

OMG. Finally got around to going to Umi and it will now be the ONLY sushi bar we ever go to in Fort Wayne. We ordered a spider roll, a spicy tuna roll, several types of cut sushi (anagi, hamachi, salmon, etc), salads and some tempura, and I can happily report that EVERYTHING was exceptional. Every item was up there with the best sushi bars we have ever been to on the west coast, east coast, any coast or major city in any continent. And we have had the good fortune to dine at many, many sushi bars. FORT WAYNE FINALLY HAS A BONAFIDE SUSHI BAR EVERYBODY! Umi literally blows Asakusa out of the water on every level, except maybe atmosphere (where both excel). Service at Umi was also exceptional (as opposed to that other place down the street, where it was both amateurish and inattentive). When you dine at Umi you actually get the feeling that the food is inspired. Just the right spices - some of them rather unique - prepared with a high level of care. Talk about class act, between the chic decor, the staff treating you like the only customer and the amazing back ground music, Umi's is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner, birthday celebration (there were a few going on while we were there) or a corporate dinner. The food was FANTASTIC! The portions of sushi were generous, the salmon literally melted in my mouth. My husband got a seafood entree and the scallops were succulent. I have to also say that the staff was too notch. They greeted us with smiles and welcomes and not the fake kind. Our server John was outstanding. Not only was he versed in every drink and item on the menu but he also was friendly and funny and he made sure we were enjoying our dinner without being over bearing. If I could give no stars I absolutely would. In town visiting my parents and went in for an early dinner at 3:45pm. The parking lot was completely empty as was the restaurant. We inquire about a party of 6 and the young gentleman at the host stand asks if we have a reservation, we tell him we do not and he proceeds to check his system and informs us we could not be seated until around 7pm. We leave to find a different establishment. We decide to call to see if we could reserve seating for the same day within the next 15 minutes. The young host tells us on the phone that they would be able to accommodate the same party size we requested while in person. It was the most discriminating and uncomfortable situation to be in, and I am appalled at how such an establishment could have such a racist disposition toward a family willing to patronize their establishment. I or my family who are very well known citizens in the Fort Wayne area will never support this establishment, neither should you! read more

I want to love this place, I truly do. I've been three times now and the first two visits were fine. However last night was very different. When we were seated it took nearly 10 minutes for a server to acknowledge us and when she did she seemed bothered by having to work our table. In addition to that, while I was waiting, I saw a staff member put his hands in the ice that's used to fill water pitchers. Apparently he just wanted something to chew on. I quietly and politely mentioned this to my server and from that moment on all I felt was contempt. In addition to this there were staff standing around playing on their phones. I suppose most of these issues aren't egregious but when put together, at a restaurant with this price point, I expect better. This isn't Applebee's. Nearly everything from the soup to the entree were a disappointment. We were excited to try it, but ultimately it was a let down.
