We went to meet friends here Saturday evening. we sat on the enclosed patio. While it was cold and rainy out, but the heaters were on full blast. we ordered, a crab cake sandwich buffalo wings, a cheeseburger, and calamari. All of the food was good except the crabcake. My friend said it was mostly filler. The buffalo wings were cooked to perfection. The service was great. I will return soon to try other menu items. Very enjoyable. A great place for conversation, reasonably priced drinks, friendly staff, and rather delicious tavern food until 1am.

I had been to Tunnicliff's once before and thought it was decent so I brought my girlfriend there for sunday brunch before walking around Eastern Market. It turned out to be THE MOST DISGUSTING DINING experience of my life. We decided to sit outside and as our meal came to the table I looked over at the mobile waitor station in the corner and noticed a rat underneath the cart. Obviously pretty gross, but we were both almost willing to look past it if that was the worst that happened. City living and such.. However, I alerted the staff which set off a chain off events best described as a downward spiral. The waitor sent a busboy with a broom into the corner which didnt solve the problem. Then the second and third busboys came out and made it a scene. They ended up forcing the rat out of the corner and one of the staff stomped on its head....literally 3-4 feet from our table. AT NO POINT did the waitor ask if we'd like to switch tables, or move inside. The manager never came out afterwards to talk with us or any of the other guests. Patrons just started leaving becasue they were so grossed out. Needless to say we lost our collective appetite after the stopming incident and told the waitor we were leaving. He informed us that the manager was busy and was only able to take 5 dollars off the bill (which I was shocked they expected me to pay). I was so just disgusted with the place I threw down money and got out of there with a vow never to return. Between the rat incident, how they solved the problem, and lack of customer service afterwards, I suggest you think twice before returning as well. read more

I wish I had better review to leave... We dined outside and I had gyro, whereas rest of diners tried chicken tenders and the special: pork chops. The tenders were ok. Nothing special, served on fries. You know when you leave food in the fridge too long past the expiration date? And it tastes off and not quite right? That sums up the gyro. Maybe after a beer or 2 you don't notice...Bummer. I was disappointed and server did nothing to correct. read more

I've been here a couple of times for the brunch. The coffee is good and the farmer's omelette is out of this world good. It's an omelette filled with bacon, cheddar cheese, and mashed potatoes. Yep, mashed potatoes. It comes with sour cream on top, but I thought it was a bit too much - requested sans sour cream the second visit. I've also tried the challah french toast, which is another winner. When it comes to the service, it was meh the first time I came. The server was attentive, but had a strange attitude problem. There were a plate of creamers on our table that were labeled "Keep cold" or something to that nature and the creamers were all room temperature. I requested politely if we could get cold creamers and the server just looked at me like I was an idiot. I then asked for butter for my toast and I got that the same "Are you serious?" look. Maybe it's all in my head. The second visit was much better. Different server who was extremely polite and didn't question my cold creamer request. The hostess who sat us down was also very polite. The establishment is really roomy and there are plenty of tables and bar stools to sit. I'd like to come back at night and try the actual bar scene here. When it comes to brunch, these guys are "A-OK" (hence the 3 stars), but there is some heavy brunch competition in the District. read more

This is my go to Resturant when I'm on the hill and looking for informal casual dining. Always "good" for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This is the place we're locals go for a good and reasonably priced meal eating out. The burgers and fries are among the best I've ever eaten. read more

With its location across from Eastern Market, Tunnicliff's can't help but draw a standing room only crowd for Sunday brunch. The place has sort of a Victorian pub feel with it's etched glass partitions, hunter green walls, and long wooden bar. Personally I think the food was better when it was owned by Lynne Breaux (current president of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington AKA RAMW) and it served cajun inspired food. It's now owned by the same folks who own Stony's and Ulah Bistro. Anyway, it's a good place to grab a burger and a beer (12 taps including Dominion Ale, Guiness and Stella) and do some people watching from it's front covered patio. read more

Came here for drinks after shopping at Eastern market. Place was packed with brunch crowd; looks good but we only had $5 mimosas. My biggest complaint is music is too loud and upbeat/trendy for morning crowd. Felt like a 11pm atmosphere. Wish they played jazz or acoustic (think Sirius Radio Coffeehouse). At least until noon. Went here during Blizzard of 2010 for lunch to get out of apartment. Sat outside in the "heated covered area". Nice not crowded like indoors. Service very slow - took a while for them to acknowledge we were there even though only a few other patrons outside (including someones dog). Food came pretty fast after ordering. My husband ordered fish and chips were good and I had the buffalo chicken sandwich (which is grilled not fried). It was okay. Don't know if we will go back. read more

Food is ok, but the staff were rude and the service was poor. The patio was relatively empty so we asked to sit out there. The hostess brought us to a two seat table right in the sun and it was a scorcher out. We asked if we could please sit further back in the shade (reasonable request). She flat out said no and that those tables were for parties of more than two. After a little while, we were both roasting in the sun and the patio was still empty. When we inquired with our waiter if we could move tables, he too flatly said no! Food was ok and it took several requests just to get one refill of iced tea (trying to replenish lost fluids due to our sun baked dining experience). This is one of my favorite places in DC, but I have to admit that visitors tend to dislike it. It's fun b/c everyone here knows each other, and there is always something going on (like a fight, or someone asking you to give their dog a french fry, or the police being called, or drunk people joining in on your conversation, or whatever). I wish they continued serving more food when it was late out, though, and I wish they'd be a little more flexible about customizing the menu. Stopped in for brunch here on a whim with a friend. Every other place we passed had no tables open but we were able to snag one here without a wait. Besides the $5 mimosa and Bloody Mary specials lured me in like a moth to a flame. The food was the normal brunch stuff, decently priced and decently tasting. Nothing very memorable but enjoyable enough. It was nice to go easy on the wallet for once and be a little conventional. Went here twice during big our week in DC, and came away happy both times. First was a late-night stop - one of the few places serving food after 10:00. Limited menu at that time, but they made us feel welcome and the food (burgers, pizza, chicken tenders) was well made if unexciting. The regular menu of broader selections stuck to mostly standard American fare, but still well-made in ample portions with friendly service. Definitely recommend for late night or anytime. read more

Tunnicliffs tavern has the most ignorant unreasonable staff. Clearly i looked online at the menu, through google, the information capital of the internet, and the staff proceeds to tell me that they dont have an online menu. After i showed it to the guy behind the bar he makes some bs excuse and proceeds to tell me that my regular bacon cheeseburger is going to $15 while my specialty burger is $12. We needed to fuel up before cruising Eastern Market. About 10:30A on a Sunday, and the area was hopping. It was pretty hot and humid outside, so we didn't want to sit curbside. We just happened across this place, so went inside and were seated right away. Our server, Steve, was relatively swift and efficient, if not particularly friendly. We both had omelettes; mine was a western, which had peppers that tasted like they were sauteed ahead of time with some spices; an interesting and tasty twist. Good coffee, pretty raucous environment (but then it *is* a bar), all around decent meal. Right down the middle; three stars. read more
