spicy tuna tataki and red dragon
    Neha A.

Walked by this place on a Saturday night craving sushi and it was a great choice. The chicken donburi was the perfect filling dish with chicken, egg, veggies and a side of miso soup. Both sushi options we got (spicy tuna tataki and red dragon) were both delicious as well. The staff was so friendly, we were there past closing time rushing to finish our meal but our waitress noticed and told us to take our time.

Sushi place on Abbott across from International Village. Parking here sucks. Nearest lot I can think of is International Village. Just don't get caught. The inside has lots of wooden tables, and looks somewhat modern. Staff are friendly but a bit slow. The place wasn't that busy either. Had to wave them down a few times. The chirashi don here is a wee bit pricy, but pretty solid. The menu mentions 15 pieces, but I counted some 19. 2 scallop (squid?), 2 hokkigai, 2 salmon, 2 tuna, 1 toro, 3 more salmon, 2 seared tuna, 2 tako, 1 ebi, and 2 tamago. In any case, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything was fresh. Even the rice was tasty. I would gladly come back. Recommended.

Tsuki Sushi Bar is located in Chinatown, right across the street from International Village. We dropped by here for quick and simple lunch. The food was quite good and they have a good number of Vegetarian specialty rolls on their menu.  I shared a Veggie California Roll and a Veggie Futomaki with someone else in the family who like me, was wanting to eat something light and at the same time Vegetarian. Veggie California Roll consisted of tofu, avocado, cucumber & balsamic sauce while the Veggie Futomaki was made of Shiitake, cucumber, spinach, kanpyo, bell pepper and Inari. Really enjoyed these two rolls. Most people think of raw fish when they think of sushi, but Vegetarian sushi can be very tasty as well and for anyone who's struggled with the words "Eat your veggies!" I find that it's an absolutely delightful way to eat my veggies! Wish more sushi restaurants would expand their Vegetarian options!  Service: Good Parking: Paid parking on the street or in the underground parking lot across the street at International Village Location: 509 Abbott St., Vancouver, BC

Authentic with a wide variety of creative rolls this restaurant appeals to sushi lovers from all walks of life. With a small dining room, get there early and expect to be stunned by their specials. Even those who are nervous around raw fish can find suitable options. The food comes out quickly too. My only negative was I asked for soy paper instead of seaweed but was given lettuce which was odd but not unpleasant.

I've written about my Canucks related foor escapades before. Tsuki is probably the last of my go tos for a pre-game meal. Let's be honest, would you rather pay $30 for a sandwich and drink in the arena, or would you rather spend closer to $20 for some pretty darn good sushi with a cup of hot tea? Tsuki is fairly busy on Canucks game nights. The key is to definitely show up a bit on the early side. You'll get a table, and then can head to Rogers to watch the warm up skate. Despite how busy it is, it's not an uncomfortable packed as the tables are spacious enough along with the bar. I get fairly good vibes as well from the lighting and decor. I've gone a couple times and can't say I've had anything bad. I'm a rolls type of person and I enjoy everything I've ordered. They have some fancy and funky stuff available as well. I appreciate their twist on the Dynamite Roll and think having that torched saucy top is fairly neat. Baked/scorched rolls are what I would consider their way of standing out. I haven't tried them myself but every time I see them come out it looks pretty good. Two thumbs up to Tsuki for a great sushi experience steps away from the game. It's the end of the season for me now, but I'm for sure going to go back next season.

Came here on a Wednesday night for dinner with my husband, and we were pleasantly surprised! Our order: sockeye salmon oshi (pressed sushi), house roll, and avalanche roll with black rice substitute. Total bill $33 canadian dollars before tax and tip. Pros: - Wasn't too busy on a weeknight - Pretty fast service, didn't feel like we had to wait too long - Pretty affordable sushi overall, especially if you get one of the cheap rolls for under $10. - It was my first time having pressed sushi! and it was pretty good, the sockeye salmon is yummy and the jalepeno oddly added a really good twist - Honestly cute and casual vibes, a decent place for a date or family dinner. - I don't know if black rice substitute is common in Vancouver, but it's not easy to find in the Bay Area, so we enjoyed the feature. We will be back! Great simple place to get our sushi fix

Came here with my husband since we were staying nearby. We enjoyed our late lunch. The quality was good and we would come back. The place was clean and peaceful. The service was excellent they got everything right.

My friend and I each got a roll to share - the smoky yam roll and the Hawaiian roll. I thought both of them were not bad but I didn't find anything too special or spectacular about them. The pineapple on the Hawaiian roll also tasted a bit dry and not as juicy as pineapples usually taste. Overall not a bad place if looking for a quick bite or sushi in the area.

I visited Tsuki around 5 on a weekday for dinner. There was no one else in the restaurant and I was seated right away. They did check my vaccination status and my ID! There are a ton of options at this restaurant so I went with the classic combo that they offered (I think around $10?) with three rolls: California, tuna and salmon. The food was really good and also came with miso soup! The service was fast and the space was clean.

Never heard of Tsuki Sushi Bar before but we decided to give them a try. It seems to be a Korean run Japanese restaurant. You'll find them next door to Taishoken Ramen. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 8:30pm) and less than a handful of tables were occupied. They were playing the Oilers game on one of their TV's. Service was passable but we had to flag our waiter down to get tea refills. The menu is massive; most interesting thing they offer is the oven baked rolls. We don't order rolls much but the veggie special rolls looked promising. - Miso soup - they brought a small bowl to start. Nice and hot. - Ebi udon ($10.00) - the tempura was tasty but arrived soggy as they dump it into the bowl. Broth was piping hot and detected notes of seaweed. I was disappointed at how little udon you get along with a lack of bounce/chew to the texture. Cheap but not satisfying. - Ika umeshiso maki ($5.00) - the umeshiso was light and not tangy enough. Passable but the makis were small and uneven. - Negitoro maki ($5.00) - easily the best of the three rolls. Negitoro had a creamy mouthfeel. Again, they don't roll their makis properly. One piece wasn't even filled half way. - Chopped scallop roll ($5.00) - decent but again, the rolls were all over the place size-wise. - Nigiri combo ($21.00 for 11) - two pieces each of sockeye salmon, tuna and ebi along with a saba, tako, tamago, masago and hokkigai. No wasabi and an excessive amount of rice in each piece of nigiri. Literally double the amount of rice necessary. Best piece was the saba and the tamago. Rest were standard fare. Don't bother with the nigiri; thinking the assorted sashimi ($27.00 for 19 pieces) would have been wiser. Didn't find anything particularly unique at TSB. Sloppy rolls and overall poor execution. 2.5 stars.

This.sushi.is.so.good. Coming from ottawa where we're not exactly known for our top notch sushi, this was such a treat! Locally sourced fish and OceanWise approved can ease your conscience as you chow down on some beautifully prepared and delish sushi! Would definitely go back- the menu is huge it was almost impossible to choose! Lots of locals dining there too so you know it's good.

Spicy Tuna Don ($14) - Oh so spicy, a bit too much sauce.
    Mandy T.

In Vancouver, there's a lot of Japanese restaurants serving Oishi Sushi, Aburi Nigiris, Dons and Special Rolls; and Tsuki falls in the average category. The taste is OK but the value is not as good. Also, they do not have a lot of hot food options like Karrage or Beef Ribs. There's Gindara and Gyoza and that's pretty much it. On weekdays, no lunch set options. Not sure about on weekends. I got the Salmon Oishi Sushi ($14) and it was OK, but I prefer my seared box sushis to have a more smokey flavor from the searing, more kick from the jalapeño, and more flavor from the sauce. The Spicy Tuna Don on the other hand was really dosed in spicy sauce; thank goodness for the big pieces of avocado to cut the spice. Pros are that the presentation of their food is nicely done and venue provided comfortable seating.

Steep as it is, I decided I wanted a "quick little sushi lunch with a view", and a quick little sushi lunch with a few is exactly what I received. Although I don't recommend it, I walked right in from the street, no reservation, and was seated at the bar (in pretty casual street clothes I may add). I enjoyed a premium sake flight (which was fine...just fine), an old fashioned served with the perfect accompanying dark chocolate, and a good amount of sushi including their signature aburi style sushi in flight form and nigiri tuna flight (bluefin, chutoro, otoro). After visiting Japan last December, I'm a bit of an otoro snob but I have to hand it to them, all three of these cuts were perfect. The accompanying rice, perfection. The quality of the fish, divine. The view was the cherry on top of this experience. This will certainly be a spot I revisit next time I'm in Vancouver.

Maybe it's an American thing to linger and enjoy a dining experience. To stay longer than needed to…read moresoak up the ambiance and give a good moment some extra time for memories. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).

Every guest is seated around the bar where they can watch the rolls being made fresh. Upon being seated you place your order by marking a piece of paper. We started off with cocktails: kaiju en neguroni and peach pafekuto and they were both refreshing. We each ordered a few rolls and my fave is the unagi hand roll. The unagi was flame-torched right in front of me. Prices are on the expensive side with small portions, but everything tasted fresh.

We picked up the 16-piece Premium Cut Rolls (toro, yellowtail, scallop, and truffle lobster), and the quality really showed in the taste. Everything was clean, fresh, and well-balanced -- no heavy sauces, no distractions, just really good fish. The toro was rich and smooth, the scallop was buttery, and the truffle lobster added a nice depth without overpowering the roll. Pickup was quick and seamless, and the food was packaged well for eating on the go before a flight. Portions are standard, but the flavor and quality are absolutely the highlight here. If you care more about how sushi tastes than flashy extras, Hello Nori is a great choice. Would happily come back next time.

Even on a Thursday night, the restaurant was nearly full, which speaks to its popularity. I ordered the Tako Sunomono and the Premium Chirashi Don. Tako Sunomono: The octopus was perfectly tender and the vinegar dressing was refreshing--exactly what I needed to wash away the fatigue of the day. Premium Chirashi Don: The presentation was stunning and immediately worked up my appetite. Every piece of seafood was incredibly fresh and of high quality. You can really taste the difference here. If you're looking for healthy, fresh, and beautifully presented Japanese cuisine, Shizenya is a must-visit. Highly recommended!
