Came here with my family while we're on vacation. The food was good i got a beef don which was tasty there was glass noodle or some type of vermicelli that I enjoyed having in here its not something im used to. The rice was coated in the sauce under the beef which was tasty its easy to just get non sauced rice so i appreciate that. All in all service was fairly good the amount of food they serve in portions are just right. I enjoyed it as standard Japanese fare. We found this spot online and walked in. It's the night of Olivia Rodriguez concert and it's also Friday night. There's just great energy on Robson street but it was quiet in the restaurant - towards the end of our meal, we were the only ones there and that was around 8pm. You walk down the stairs to go to this restaurant, it's partially in the basement. Service is great although when we asked how many pieces were in the Delux sashimi order, she had to go back and ask. We were trying to decide between assorted $26 and delux $34. Assorted has 15 pieces so we went with that. We also ordered some ramen and rolls. I get a little iffy about ordering ramen at a sushi restaurant because good ramen broth takes a long time to make and I prefer going to a restaurant that specializes in ramen for that. But the ramen here was great! The broth was flavorful and the noodles were cooked perfectly! Lots of beef, Napa cabbage and green onions! Highly recommend. All good here! Convenient location. I stopped here for a quick bite while shopping on Robson. The prices are reasonable, but the food lacks quality. The server was friendly, but didn't seem familiar with the menu. When asked a question, she would run to the back, then run back out with an answer. Ebi aburi: the worst aburi I ever had. The sauce was watery and lacked flavour, and the shrimp was so thin, I was mostly eating rice. Tempura: The batter was crisp and flaky. Have you ever had a hunger attack while shopping for clothes? Halfway through my stroll on Robson street, I became extremely hungry and the first sign I saw was "Yan Sushi". Even though I didn't know anything about this place, I decided to go....well...climb down rather.....It's in a hole in the ground. The place was clean, the service was good and the sushi? I don't know how else to put this, but it was the freshest I've had in a while. We ordered again a week later for takeout and it was again just as fresh. Also, their rolls are super creative culinarily impressive and colourful. I love the fact that it was inconspicuous and unassuming.....very different and refreshing from the current world we live in. Delicious food in what appears to be a hole in the wall. My daughter and I stumbled upon this little restaurant while walking in the area. It's located in a wonderful area near great shopping and other restaurants. The exterior is unassuming. All you see from the street is a door with a few signs around the door. A short staircase takes you down to the quaint, cozy, and very basic dining room. Booth, table/chair, and sushi bar seating were available. The menu included a wonderful selection of sushi rolls, noodles, robata, sashimi, appetizers, soups, salads, tempura, and bento boxes. We chose the Seaweed Roll, the Durian Roll, and the Zaru Soba (as an appetizer). Everything arrived in a very timely manner and was beautifully plated. The food was flavorful, fresh, lite, and delicious! Service was good. The 2 multi-user, gender specific restrooms were clean and functional. Prices were extremely reasonable. Sushi Yan had decent reviews so I stopped by thinking sushi on the west coast, it has to be good. The deluxe sashimi platter I paid about less than 3 a piece came with a majority of the cuts previously frozen. The tilapia, sockeye, octopus and tuna had a mushy and granular ice crystal mouth feel. The shrimp was dry, in a way that suggested freezer burn. Only the likely farmed Atlantic salmon was fresh. The establishment literally smelled like a urinal cake across the whole floor, due to a cleaner I saw them use to wash tables. Speaking to the ambiance. It was kind of like a dive bar, which I can appreciate. Pros - Good prices, nice size portions but average sushi. Its a basement restaurant. I didn't care for the teriyaki chicken. It was full of bones and fat. I think they hacked thru a chicken leg vertically. See pic. Couldn't eat it. The tempura was good. The tea tasted more like water than tea and then when I saw the tea coming out of the teapot, it was actually clear as water. So not sure if that was just a "one off" or they're trying to stretch their tea. Our server was very nice and food came out quick. read more

Passed by during my visit from Alberta. This place is obscure and unassuming as you walk downstairs into the basement of a building. Once you get in you are greeted most welcomely and seated by the staff. It is a hopping happening little place and I can understand why. The staff is so friendly and gracious. Starts with complementary tea, of course. Choosing from a well put together diverse menu will take a minute. The food was very good. We had a sushi roll, tempura, some sashimi and miso soup. I think the prices are extremely reasonable compared to other places. That coupled with really nice service and authentic vibe gives this 5 stars! I will go back during this visit and future visits. I read a negative review by M and I couldn't quite grasp how bad it was for him. I didn't see that at all. I believe that some fish is frozen as part of the parasite killing process. Not everything comes straight out of the sea safely. Sometimes I think negative reviews and positive reviews can be plants. But mine is authentic. I'm from Alberta. The food is alright. The service sucks. I used to eat here at least twice a week. This place always presented an internal dilemma. I don't like leaving tips below 15%, at the same time the servers here rarely deserve more than 10% max (being generous). So today I came for lunch, was sat down and then ignored. This place is adorable! I loved the entrance, how it's just a small door to the basement of the building. Super low-key and reminded me of my time in Japan. Decor is great, and the food was delish. I ordered a tempura udon. The Tempura was ok but Udon was unbelievable. I have never seen that Udon in my life because Udon came in miso soup..... it was the same soup what my husband had with his bento box. There is a Udon called Miso nikomi Udon(boiled in the thick miso ) but the one I had was just noodle in a regular miso soup. That's not Udon at all! I'm a Japanese and grew up there. I know what Udon is. Sorry I don't want to say this again but, that is not Udon. Their Udon was just a MISO SOUP with noodle. I'm very disappointed :( read more

I found this place on my lunch break from work. I walked down the stairway to my little sushi heaven. It's not much to look at inside, random big screen tv's a small 90's soda cooler, old news papers and odd decorations don't even matter. I have eaten here a number of times even bringing co workers, my bf and family here. It's that good. My personal favorite is the lunch special, a chicken bento box (pictured), for $8.99. I will no longer eat sushi else where. The quality of the food served here is outstanding, friendly service to boot. My next favorite is the spring roll, dripping with seaweed salad, packed with fresh tempura yam and avocado. Just all around goodness. The food is made fresh when you order. No sushi boat bs here. This is a great place for a quick and filling dinner! My family was actually pretty bad with ordering (we messed up some orders, weren't ready when we called the waiter, etc) and they were SUPER patient, nice, AND helpful - for the staff, if you're seeing this, sorry by the way!! I saw this on the front page of Yelp and book marked it for future reference on February 18th. I was expecting better, however, was disappointed. I got my usual avocado and cucumber roll, however, since I was with a good girlfriend of mine we shared some warm plates and sides. They were served cold. Service was very slow that day. We have dined here at least 8 times over the last 6 weeks while visiting Vancouver. The meals are always of a very high standard and the service is attentive as long as they are not crazy busy. I would recommend this restaurant, notable is the chicken teriyaki and kong rolls. They are always accomodating and full of smiles. Has a family owned and run feel! Unlike traditional spicy tuna rolls, the sriracha sauce wasn't mixed with the tuna; it was a plain tuna roll with the sauce drizzled over the roll. I did not like how the interior looked, for some reason it looked dirty to me even though it wasn't! We got seated and a gentleman approached us asking us what we wanted. We gave our orders and after 20 minutes he gave me a wrong meal which i had not asked for. Than I told him and he came back with the wrong meal AGAIN! I also had told him i don't want any wassabi and my friend told him that she wanted extra wasabi and he ended giving me the wassabi and not her! That really made my meal not enjoyable. I stumbled upon Sushi Yan and was pleasantly surprised to find a quaint hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurant. Their menu is very diverse so you can try hot pots, tempura, sushi, bento, sashimi, etc. The portion sizes are pretty huge given their affordable prices. The service is friendly, but can be quite slow so don't come here if you're starving (there was only one waitress for 3-4 tables). The tempura wasn't too oily and the amount was good. 5 pieces of vegetables and 2 prawns. The prawns were on the small side but that was alright, it satisfied the craving. I had to take the stars off for these reasons. It took a little while to get seated for a half empty restaurant, but there was only one girl working the floor at the time. I can understand that she can't be seating guests, while waiting on tables and expo-ing the food out to diners. She did try her best, I suppose, but maybe it's a sign that they need another person helping out at dinner time. On to the food. Not sure how my friend's orders were but the spicy tuna I got was definitely not spicy, and the oyster motoyaki had a grimy texture to it. I'm usually scarfing these two down when I get them at other establishment, and I usually long for more motoyaki. I could barely finish the one I was working on. I don't know.. There isn't much to say about it without sounding like I'm just being nit picky and bitching about everything. I feel that they're overpriced for the quality they put out, but I guess that's downtown. I'm just extremely underwhelmed and disappointed.
