Food was great and fresh! Wait staff were friendly and attentive. The inside is very spacious and could accommodate groups of six or so comfortably. I had the Gyoza appetizer and followed up with the Crunch House roll and the Spicy Tuna Tempura roll. The spicy tuna was about a 1 on a scale of 1-5 spicy level. Would come here again for sushi and recommend to others.
Come early as it gets super busy. Servers are friendly and efficient. Hot tea is served when you sit down and they will give you a minute to take a look at the menu. Once your order is taken the food comes out pretty quickly. Gets noisy from all the people as the restaurant fills up. Sushi was super fresh and tasty. Will come again to try more food
Had a nice little lunch before seeing Taylor Swift so we were almost too excited to eat! Plus they were playing nothing but TS music that day so we were doubly distracted lol! The place was super busy during the after-lunch before-dinner hours so that's always a good sign! Luckily we snagged the last open table and ordered... Very clean, service was polite and efficient. The sush was good, not knock your socks off but super solid and it sat well! The salad was the real standout - cold, HUGE, and delish dressing!
Quick service, cheap eats and tasty food! Ordered a spicy scallop roll and spicy salmon roll. Both had the perfect amount of spice and I love that there wasn't too much rice on the outside
This place is so big inside. My friend recommends this place so we walked from our hotel to this place. Service was good. Helpful and attentive. One thing I want to mention is they only have whiskey liquor and not vodka. Tried to ordered vodka and was told they don't have it there. In all honesty, the sushi is decent quality. It's not anything amazing. The dish I actually enjoyed the most was the tofu. Everything was just ok.
Came in 40 minutes before closing on a weeknight and was happy to be seated and served quickly! Our sushi rolls and sashimi did come before the Takoyaki. The portions here are good for the price and quality. It's your standard dependable sushi spot that's affordable too. Parking out front on a weeknight is only $1/hour if you're lucky to snag a spot. The waitress did swoop in pretty quickly to clear plates the second we finished a dish but we understood as it was closing time.
Visited Vancouver for my birthday. I was told canada has really good sushi and that I have to try. Came here Sunday night for dinner around 6:30. I was surprised they weren't packed. It is a really nice restaurant with modern decors. They offer many selections. Too many to choose in my opinion lol. There are so many items that I want to try but just didn't have room for it. My sisters and I ordered 5 different rolls and an assorted sashimi. All the rolls and sashimi were good and decent quality. Service was ok but needed to be more attentive. Prices wise, awesome for sushi!

The vibe of the restaurant is very standard sushi shop - they have a good takeout set up with at least a dozen orders being fulfilled while we were eating. Now onto the food. I have *never* in my life seen such large cuts of fish for such a fair price. Everything was delightful, from the miso soup to the rolls. 11/10 - great and we will come back!

Super airy location, love the high ceilings. Came in for a quick bite. Chirashi Don was very nice and the fish was thick. Rice ratio to fish was on the lean side. The soy sauce was sweeter, like boiled soy sauce and sugar. Miso soup was luke warm with great flavour. Pricing was competitive for the area. Staff was efficient and nice.
I came to Vancouver on a business trip. I yelped a sushi restaurant near my hotel for dinner. Then I found Sushi California. It was 7pm on a Friday night and the seats were more than half full. I was alone, so I sat at the counter. And ordered the sushi deluxe combo and miso soup. The miso soup didn't taste very good. The sushi ingredients were ok but rice was dry and too small rice of nigiri. I felt betrayed expectations.
We visited Sushi California on a spur of the moment decision (we were hungry and saw it across the street). We were greeted by a friendly staff member and were offered hot tea. From the lighting, music, and friendly staff, the atmosphere was great. We ordered a variety of appetizers, a few rolls, the chicken karaage, and a pasta dish. Everything exceeded expectations. The Diablo roll was our favorite, but everything else was great, as well. Very glad we stumbled upon Sushi California and will return if we ever visit Vancouver again.

What a fantastic surprise to find this sushi spot right within walking distance of our hotel! We ordered a platter of rolls, the salmon sashimi (cut into incredibly thick, melt-in-your-mouth pieces), the shrimp tempura, and the vegetable tempura--both of which had a wonderfully light, crispy batter. We also tried the beef teriyaki, which was packed with flavor. If we had one more day in the city, we would definitely come back for another meal! Our waitress was very friendly too! The food here was decent my friend and I shared the appetizer sashimi (among others) which did taste pretty fresh but honestly, I've had much better sushi in Vancouver. It was also fairly expensive in terms of sushi restaurants. The restaurant is also very large inside and it wasn't super packed when we were there. My biggest concern was how the staff reacted to my peanut allergy. I told the waitress about my allergy and she told me that they didn't have peanuts in the restaurant--which I know is false because there are peanuts in the gomaii. When I pointed that out to her, she seemed flustered and quickly walked away. It didn't leave me confident that my food be safe for me to eat. Thankfully I was fine, but I prefer to eat at places where I can feel a little bit more reassured re: allergies. read more

Cemented as a chain that serves cheap rolls and a la cart, it's a great place when you're out and can't decide on a way to fill up. 2 people can order 4 rolls and a beef teriyaki and pay with a $20 bill each, which costs about the same as parking around the area. Mixing undiluted teriyaki sauce or multiple mayos on a special roll generally kills the flavor of the seafood, but standard rolls are done at an exceptionally reasonable price. For instance, a Chopped Scallop Roll is $4.95 here, but would cost about the same at a food court. For all of their varieties of offerings, the menu is very easy to read. They offer the full range from BC Rolls to Russian Roulette Banana Pepper Rolls, making a return trip good enough to try something new. The location is MASSIVE. There will almost never be a shortage of seats, though service can be slow at times simply because of how many customers can fit into the restaurant at a time. Overall comfy place with cushioned seats. read more
Visited Vancouver for business. I was told Canada has really good sushi and I tried this place in the neighborhood around from my Air B&B. Came here on a weeknight for dinner around 7:00 pm. The prices for their sushi rolls were reasonable and good. I was surprised they weren't packed but there was a sushi spot on almost every corner. Great atmosphere, polite staff, and amazing selection with generous portion sizes. read more
Tried the Dynamite roll combo, masago, ikura and dungeness crab nigiri. Arrived with lots of ginger on the side which was really nice as there was enough to cleanse the palate between each piece. The sashimi was fresh and portion sizes were good. Tuna nigiri was surprisingly huge (wrapped under the rice). Unfortunately, the tempura inside the dynamite roll was very chewy and the prawn nigiri was also the same. Although sushi is a cold meal, having rubbery sushi is certainly not complimentary. Really liked the nigiri, although, the ikura was a touch salty as the rice to roe ratio was not balanced. Wish they had more masago as well. Overall, it was ok. Will give them another try another time. Might be an off day but still certainly affordable and very filling. read more

Food was ok but the service was horrible. I wen to Vancouver for my daughters Bday and decide to stop and have some sushi. Everything was great until my server never came back. she served our food and I waited for her to come back as I was thirsty and wanted to order a soda, I waited and was patient until 10 min. passed and I see everyone being attended except my table. i look around and my waitress is sitting down eating and preparing her things to go home. Usually if it's the end of your shit you introduce a new waiter/waitress that will continue to help but No she didn't even do that. there was literally 2 other table and my table so there was definitely enough staff, but nobody not even the other waitresses offered to attend my table. When I finally flagged one of them down 20 min had passed, I ordered my soda and the waitress brought out the bill as well. I wanted to order another Sapporo and something to go but they didn't even bother to ask me. I saw the other tables being attended constantly and I couldn't help but wonder if they were being neglectful because we were Hispanic. I honest have never been left to hang like that at any restaurant. read more
New location downtown which took over a previous sushi restaurant and totally redid the place. Already there are people waiting for tables at lunch time. The location is perfectly suited to the office crowd in the area. Service is quick, the food is tasty, and the prices are fair. It's 5/5 at what it's meant to do. read more

I'm a fan of all the Sushi California's -- I've been to all three locations and so I was very pleased to have one downtown! Conveniently located just around the corner from Burrard Station, the restaurant fills a void of good sushi restaurants in this part of town. I always appreciate the good portions of fish and the option to switch to brown rice (which they use the very nice purple rice). However, on my last visit I found that my chirashi don had noticeably less fish than what I would expect from this order (which I've done a dozen times). Even comparing with other reviews online, you can see that the portions are starting to shrink. Times are tough but it's a little disappointing for what has always been a solid chain. Overall, still a good sushi establishment, but the rising prices vs portion ratio are making me think about what alternatives me be out there. read more
Great location and affordable sushi downtown. Very spacious with lots of seating. The portions are quite big too. However, I find the sushi to be just mediocre. The rice was a little stale and the fish wasn't as fresh as I was expecting. I prefer other sushi spots in town. read more

I got the chirashi don and it was really good value for money. The sashimi is very fresh and thick cut and is easily 2-3 pieces of sashimi at other sushi places ive been to. I shared the don with a friend to try some if the other items and this was a highly recommended item at $21 The ratio of the rice to fish is excellent, with no leftover rice that is often common with chirashi dons when the fish is lacking. The rolls were delicious as well. Easily best place value for money. read more
We've tried the one on Broadway before and well with a busy holiday season we decided to try this downtown location. The sushi is really fresh, and great value. We ordered the chicken karaage, soft shell crab, the 9 piece tuna and salmon sashimi, spinach gomae, avocado roll, tobiko, house roll and chopped scallop nigiri. The chicken karaage portions are hugee. So if your really hungry the portion size is a lil more than double than most places we have ordered from. The house roll was quite big as well as we've noticed other places their house rolls have always been half the size. Props to the restaurant for using the type of takeout boxes as the fried foods travelled awesome without it ever being soggy! So if ever you have a deep fried Japanese food craving and too lazy to pickup your order this should be your go to place for fried takeout. read more

Sushi California is a great place to go if you are looking for reasonable prices while still getting a semi-fancy dining experience! I ordered the chicken teriyaki and I was impressed with the presentation, it was was served on a bed of various vegetables and covered in a great ratio of sauce! The staff was also super friendly and our food came out super quick. If you ever find yourself in the area you should definitely check out Sushi California! read more
Back here again after a long time. They just opened another branch and this time in downtown. As always, sushi california is recommended and cheap and very big. The quality still good and the taste is still good. Nothing new much but its always a comfort sushi to go!! Cheers! Recommended as always!!! read more

All I'm going to say is thank you Sushi California for bringing back what I know as a great sushi restaurant that Vancouver is known for!! All the places we used to go to are now closed and we've been feeling hopeless that this loving relationship we've had with our beloved sushi experiences was coming to an end! But we happened to be in the area recently while visiting for the holidays and so fortunate to find this spot! Amazing fresh, just like we're used to flavors, great staff, quick service and really nice ambience! And the best part not overpriced for very good food...can't wait to go back Im dreaming of this place and I don't even have to go to California lol! I'm in love again! There are many locations all over the lower mainland but we tried the one downtown! read more

Easily the best sushi I've ever had. Ate there 3 times in 2 days while I was in Vancouver. 0 complaints whatsoever. Excellent quality, fresh, and very large sized rolls so you truly get a lot for your money. Also VERY easy to order online which is always a huge plus. read more
Sushi California is one of the best sushi chains in Vancouver and every location I've ever been to has been so consistent! Having said that, I see that there are some reviews under 4 stars but noticed that they were all from takeout/delivery so I can understand that. This location in downtown is so convenient but hidden from Robson St. so people often don't know about it and will go to a more convenient sushi restaurant that is often more expensive and not as tasty. What's so great about this location is that it is huge and spacious! There are so many tables with huge space surrounding so you are not close to other tables at all and there is also a huge bar! The staff are very friendly here and your order comes out very quickly and efficiently. I went with my mom and aunt and after sanitizing, we immediately were offered tea or water. The tea was a rice tea and was so delicious my mom loved it so much cause it was really light! We got a Wakame Salad, California Roll, Alaska Roll, Dynamite Roll, Las Vegas Roll and Negihama Roll. The Wakame Salad came out first and don't let the small bowl deceive you, there is actually alot, the 3 of us kept taking turns eating it and it just kept going, it tasted really fresh and delicious as well! Then the sushi came out all at once. The Las Vegas roll was a new roll that I haven't tried yet but now it's definitely going to be one that I get everytime. The roll had crab meat, yam tempura, avocado, and cucumber inside and on top had masago, spicy mayo and teriyaki sauce. It was soo delicious and had all my favourite items and was just so flavourful. The Alaska Roll was also so good, I make sure to always get it whenever I go to Sushi California because they make the salad dressing sooo perfect here and it tastes amazing with the fresh salmon and avocado. The Negihama roll was also delicious, fresh fish and delicious scallions, the California and Dynamite were up to standard and tastes exactly how it should taste. What I love about the sushi here is that they make the perfect sushi rice - a little bit dry and sweet, not too vinegary, mushy, sticky or overcooked. Our bill ended up being ~$32 before tip and all those rolls filled us up! This location is officially my go-to sushi place for whenever I'm downtown amd will definitely bring friends here since it is so spacious, clean bathrooms, friendly and quick service, and quality of the food and price is amazing and consistent with the other Sushi California locations! read more
