I can't say enough good things about this place. It's so nice to have a place close by with such a great selection and amazing service. I am a layman when it comes to home maintenance. Anytime I come here the staff is very friendly and helpful. The woman who seems to be the manager or owner (I believe her name is Mari) always goes above and beyond. She and one of the employees worked really hard to take slip joint nut off of a p-trap for me so I would only have to purchase the nut and not a new p-trap, which saved me about $12. I thought the two items had corroded and fused together but she let me know that the issue was the installer used plumbers tape or a similar product (she had another word for it, which I can't recall), and if I cleaned it out before reinstalling then the issue wouldn't reoccur. A big box store would never go through this much effort. They also have the sweetest dog that I love to pet anytime I go there. read more

The Mercer Island True Value so often has just what I need to complete a project. It's certainly small compared to Home Depot and Lowe's in Bellevue and Seattle but it is well organized, Mari and her team are helpful and knowledgeable, and it has a surprising scope of materials for lawn/garden and home maintenance/repair. Today I was able to get high quality exterior Benjamin Moore paint custom mixed along with the paint rollers needed for my painting project. A couple days ago, I picked up potting soil for succulents. Feeling grateful to have this True Value nearby. read more

I walked in this afternoon with a tap and stem from a frost free hose bib that, despite a few efforts, was still leaking. I was hoping to buy a replacement part, but they just sold the whole hose bib. But when the woman who runs MI True Value (Mari?) inspected what I brought in, she noticed a small washer at the end of 6 inch stem that appeared to her to be worn out. She replaced it with a new one and sent me on my way. That fixed it. Saved me $ and time. I expect others would push me to buy a new unit instead. Another seriously disappointing visit. Asked for an item. Nobody seemed to hear. Owner was there with her dog. She didn't look at me or look up. A lady who was playing with the dog asked what I needed. I said and she looked blank. She asked the guy. He didn't look up. Finally he simply said " we don't carry it anymore". I went to check for myself. Nope not there. I left the store. Nobody said a word. Really I don't think they give a .... cant understand how they stay in business. This has been the norm for years. The Mercer Island True value is a great store, with excellent service, priceless advice, a good selection of hardware necessities. It has been an Island 'institution' for 36+ years. I suspect that 'reviewer' "Eastside R" is an online-troll paid by Home Depot, to sabotage this locally-owned small-business -- typical behavior of the big box stores. ("Eastside R" has only two other Yelp reviews: one of Home Depot which he gives 5-stars to [wtf?], and one to a closed-seafood restaurant in which he just cuts-and-pastes a press-release from Bellevue Patch, perhaps to make it look like he's a real reviewer. All 3 reviews were made on the same day, Jan 27, 2013. Highly suspicious online behavior.) I don't believe a word that Eastside R wrote. I have had wonderful experiences with this store for a wide variety of needs -- painting, plumbing (Maudie is an amazing resource!), electric, tools, nuts-and-bolts (what an amazing selection! better than the big box stores), etc. etc. etc. The nearest big box store is at least 15 minutes away, each way, and longer during rush-hour traffic (8-9:30am, 3:30-7pm). It's worth a lot for me to save 30-60 minutes commute (round-trip), especially if I'm working on a big project and end up having to make several trips/day, for small items. The staff here can be hard to locate, though once you do find them they are helpful. My main complaint with this store is the prices -- it may be more convenient to grab hardware or supplies without having to go "off island," but the markup is really ridiculous. To illustrate: you can buy a sample size (pint) of Behr paint from Home Depot for three dollars, but today when I went to purchase a pint of black paint from True Value they charged me a whopping ELEVEN dollars. A slight markup for convenience is one thing, but charging three times more for equivalent products seems crazy. Long story short, it's probably worth the savings to take the time to drive to the Bellevue Home Depot. read more

Very limited inventory. High prices. Poor customer service. They're probably still in business because they're the only hardware store on Mercer Island. I only shop here grudgingly to avoid driving to Bellevue or Seattle, but 90% of the time they don't have what I need or I leave feeling like I have had a bad customer experience due to the bitter and grumpy employees or I feel fleeced. read more

Just got very poor service from Mari. She was very much like: "can't do that without a receipt, not even going to try". Sophie on the other hand, was charming, helpful, and customer service oriented. True value is more expensive than Lowes or Home Depot, but they usually make up for it with excellent customer service. Was disappointed this time. read more

My family bought me a grill through this hardware store (they purchased over the phone because they live on the east coast). It was a very nice grill, however the people at this store refused to deliver it to my house or provide any alternatives for transport. We had to rent a Uhaul to grab our own wedding gift. It was absurd, I would think someone who works at the hardware store would own a truck? Anyways I do not recommend this store. The reviews are correct in that employees seem less than helpful and are hard to find within the store. read more

We recently bought a 1 gallon can of black paint at this store. My bf put the paint on his passenger seat and it tipped over partially in the seat when making a turn and the lid SLID right off! It didn't bang into the door or anything and the lid just came right off. The black paint went everywhere in the front of the car. All over the seat, down the door and in the carpet and started oozing out the door. We turned around and went right back in and let them know they obviously didn't hammer the lid on because it just slipped right off. The manager let us know it was a new employee that mixed the paint but then said "Paint can lids just come off all the time". Umm NO. I've been buying paint for 10 years in the Seattle area and no lid has ever just come off unexpectedly, especially when it wasn't dropped or anything. Usually I have the hardest time trying to pry the lid off, not the opposite. If his claim is that their lids just randomly come off all the time then there should be a HUGE sign saying "OUR PAINT CAN LIDS COME OFF SUPER EASILY!" at the front of the store or they should put clips on their cans of paint so the lids DONT come off. We took it to the auto cleaner around the corner and he said there was no way to clean this out and the carpet had to be replaced. The bid is over $1100. Their insurance only paid half since they say it was "he said/she said". I have been trying to call the store every day and speak with the manager to get them to pay for the other half since it was indeed their mistake but they just say hes out or give me the run around. I called both Lowe's and Home Depot and their policy is to ALWAYS cover the cost to clean/repair the damage as long as it occurred before you got to your destination (ie in the car) as it was clearly a lid closure issue. If the owner or manager doesn't respond I will be taking them to small claims court for the other half of the bill. I've been going to this store monthly since 2007 as a Property Manager of an apartment building on Mercer Island but if they do not remedy the situation by paying us for the other half ($580) I will cancel our account and take our business to a company that takes care of its customers and doesn't try to put the blame on the customer for a mistake that was clearly their fault. read more

Extremely bad experience. I brought a old can with paint to the store and asked them to match the color, the employee "matched" the color and I bought a gallon of the paint. I did not use the paint for few months, when I used it two days ago, I found the color did not match the color on the wall. So I went back to the store this morning, the same employee asked me to cut a piece of dry wall with old paint so he could fix it, and I did. But when I went back again, the employee just told me he could not fix the problem. He insisted that the customer, that is me, picked the color and he mixed the color accordingly and correctly. I told him I trusted his professional expertise to match the paint color I brought to him at the first place and he should try to fix the issue. But he just told me he could sell me another gallon of paint that will match the color on the dry wall I cut out. He could not anything to the existing mismatch. I asked to talk to the manager. When the manager came, before I can explain to him about the situation, he just told me the paint could not be returned and walked away immediately. I was shocked to his action. First of all, it is my fault of putting my trust on this store. I should have not thought that they have the expertise to match the paint color that a customer brought in. Secondly, most stores will at least help to resolve any issues a customer may have, this store just blames the customer pick the wrong color. Why should have I brought the old can of paint to the store if I could pick the color from the sample? Thirdly, I expect there are some basic courtesy that a store manager should have. Have you ever met a manager walked away even before a customer can talk? I saw one today. What can I do? I set the wrong expectation on this store....and I don't think they even care losing me as the customer. The good news is that I had totally different experience in Belleuve HomeDepot less than 10 minutes drive. The employee there help me to find a best matched color, they are professional and spent great deal of time serving me. And the merchandise is much cheaper than the TrueValue on Mercer Island. It is worth the short drive to Bellevue. read more

For everyday needs I am very thankful to have this store where I live as they carry ordinary hardware inventory and in bagged garden supply more than you can ask for. The service is great. read more

Love this local hardware store! They have everything and are so helpful. Recently I stopped by with a running toilet issue and they new immediately what the problem was. I purchased the repair kit and with their encouragement made the fairly involved repair-esp for a female! No more running toilet which cost me $14 vs $100 (or more) for a plumber. I have visited this store on several occasions. I have never felt welcome. It's as if they know they are the only hardware store on the island and it's a "take it or leave it" attitude. Customer service, return policy is pitiful. I recommend driving a bit farther to any McLendon's. They are the BEST at answering questions to make sure you buy what you want and need. read more

I bought a tool here but it ended up malfunctioning every time I used it, so I wanted to return it. In TVH's defense their return policy is clearly stated by their registers but I did not notice it when I made the purchase: you can only return brand new unopened items. So yes, my mistake; however, Home Depot and Lowe's have flexible policies and as such seem to care more about satisfying their customers. It's no wonder these smaller stores are going out of business. Bottom line, shop at Home Depot or Lowe's as you never know when you may need to return something. read more

I would give this place ''five stars' but I heard most of those are not read. The staff is quite helpful here, not like one of those huge box stores. I had this problem hanging a bird feeder, and one of the guys who worked there came up with just the right kind of pivoting hook, for only a few dollars. He spent about five minutes with me, helping me figure out what I really wanted. I also have gotten really good basic supplies there, like potting soil, digging tools, and such. They have miles of screws, nails, and such on one wall, it looks like a very complete selection. I like having a hardware store close by, as do not really like driving to a big box store 20 minutes away every time I need a trowel, a nail or some paint. No plants, but they do sell seeds, and mulch, potting soil and regular fill dirt. Their prices seem OK to me. Warning, there is a couple of friendly dogs there who belong to the owner, who will figure out if you are carrying dog biscuits. I carry them because I don't have a dog of my own, and these two dogs became my new best friends. They are good dogs, and ignore you if you don't pet them. read more

My husband & I have separately had poor treatment so we will avoid shopping there. I hate to drive to Home Depot in Bellevue for my needs, but, when I get to Home Deposit, I am always treated with respect & the staff couldn't be more helpful. read more

I have had the worst and most absolute humiliating experience at the True Value Hardware in Grand Junction, CO. North Ave store. I have been a loyal customer since I moved to Grand Junction in 2005. That day I was going to Diamond Vogel paint store but since I was passing True Value Hardware, I decided to stop and get a dado router bit before going further. However, I needed to use the restroom. I was told that the restrooms are not open to the public. I walked to the back where another employee appeared. I asked to use the restroom, he also said that the restrooms are not open to the public. The employee became hostile when I said I was a customer that needed to use the restroom. The employee told me if I didn't like it then I could leave and pointed to the front of the store where the exit doors were located. Another employee came around the corner and I asked him where the restrooms were and he told me to get out and threatened me with physical violence. I have never been treated that way in any store in my lifetime. I have spent a considerable amount of money at True Value Hardware in Grand Junction, CO. I know that the True Value Hardware Stores are franchised, but I called the corporate offices and they said they would contact the owners. I have not heard from them for the last month and a half. They will have to pay me now to shop at any True Value Hardware Store location. They have lost a customer for life but maybe have gained an assault charge. read more
