The woman working Customer Service today deserves a ZERO! She was rude, completely ignored me, and was more interested in talking with an employee. I filed a complaint with a manager who was working the hardware/plumbing area. He was very busy. And helpful. I needed a plumbing part for a broken faucet. While I talked with him about the woman at the CS counter, I also shared how much I appreciate the usual CS person and the garden center team. read more

Always a solid choice of hardware store. On this most recent trip I just needed some generic electrical supplies and remembered that McLendon's indoor garden section. The garden selection is quite nice with a wide variety to choose from. I like that the organize the plants by type - ones that I'm 100% for sure going to kill and others I can most likely keep alive. Store was clean and the aisles were tidy and well stocked. I enjoyed getting some plant inspo for my new office, found the electrical supplies that I needed for my project, and happily went on my way. I liked it so much, in fact, that I ended up coming back the same day...because the project I thought I was doing required some serious modifications once I got started. My bad! McLendon helped me out with that and I was a happy camper. Kinda a weird hardware store, which is what makes it great. Everyone always seems like they don't want to work there and today I went in to get a key cut that i brought in (i had someone help me cut the exact key a few weeks back without an issue) and I was basically disrespected by an employee named "John". He went on to say "you don't bring your own key to any store or you'll f*ck up my machine". I am not the one operating their key machine, they tun the machine and so they know best and that employee that helped a few weeks back was extremely polite and helpful and VERY knowledgeable. This guy John seemed like he was drunk and completely out of it. Don't go to this Mclendon in Renton Washington. Wanted to recommend McClendon's in Renton where I just had an excellent experience buying cedar planks. Kyle in the lumber department helped me figure out what type of wood I needed to repair our deck, patiently helped me go through the planks that I needed, measured and cut them, and helped me load them into the car. Without his help I probably would have gotten the wrong wood, and had to cut it all myself when I got home. People like Kyle are why you should go to McClendon's rather than the big box stores. Had about $200 worth of merch in my cart, but couldn't find pipe clamps, or anyone to tell me where they were. Left my cart in the aisle, and now headed to the other hardware store down the block. Today I came to check the deck materials and sliding door types...etc. The inside of the store is neat and tidy, and all employees greet everyone nicely. Of course, everyone wears masks. Deck samples are free and I asked for a quote. I also got a quote for the sliding door. The price was a little higher than other shops, but the person in charge was very nice and knowledgeable. I have ordered 5 windows before. At that time, I also asked for installation. You can customize the size of the window and you can also consult about installation. You can also get a quote or order by email. The inside of the store is arranged in an easy-to-see manner, making it easy to find what you need. Today I went in to get a few things to fix my bathroom, the people there told me to talk to dennis.. so I saw him and I was gonna ask if he could help me out with an item I was specifically looking for.. I found him and I was just about to ask, he quickly cuts me off with a (WHAT?.. WHAT DO YOU WANT?) It through me off the way he's handling customer service. I ignored it and still told him exactly what I needed and he (pointed) me that way in such a rude manner and said he can't help me out after that. He must hate his job or dennis from the (plumbing) department is tired of clients. In a business it should never have to be that way. I told them about it and all they can do is laugh at my face. So Mister plumber, please take some kind of therapy that can help and chill don't take it out on us. It'll be my last trip there. read more

"Did someone say they were looking for a washer?" the employee said materializing as my friend and I were trying to find this one little piece. Quickly he led the way to a nearby aisle, then helped us match the part with the right size washer to ensure we had the correct item. Ended up my friend needed a 1/4" washer which was bigger than he anticipated. The hardware sales associate explained what to look for next time. We thanked him for his time and assistance. When we checked out the cashier was friendly and funny. It was a very quick, productive trip. That said it is not the easiest store to navigate. It doesn't have an intuitive flow. Hardware parts are either in the very back or up front. The Christmas decorations were scattered throughout. It felt a bit like they arranged based on space availability without worrying about flow. Otherwise it's the run of the mill hardware store with a wide arrangement of various materials. Very easy trip! read more

What I like most about McLendon's Hardware is that it's a local, mom and pop shop with all the hardware, hard hats and tools you may need. Unlike its large competitors like Home Depot or Lowe's, McLendon's isn't overwhelming. My partner received a gift card to McLendon's, so we decided to check out the Renton location while in the area. We specifically came to get some house plants, which they had a good selection of. It had what I was looking for, so was able to bring back home a large, beautiful tropical plant for our home at a good price. At a plant store, this plant would've been much more. Oh, and it's dog-friendly! The staff was very welcoming and friendly and loved that we brought our dog in. Store was easy to navigate around and we instantly found what we were looking for, with plenty of parking spots in the front lot. Done and done. read more

This was the absolute best visit to a hardware store that we've had in some time! We visited last Sunday and by some miracle the store was not very busy so we had plenty of opportunity to look around at our leisure without fighting hordes of shoppers like you find at some of the other hardware places. The staff there welcomed us and offered to help us find what we were looking for. At one point we were looking for a flood light replacement bulb and one of the staff pointed us to their bulb expert. This lady was so nice and funny! Based on the photo we took of our bulb, she explained we would need a BR30 and then proceeded to show us the different types of lighting (i.e., daylight vs. soft light, etc.) that they have on a display so you can actually see the difference between them. When we were being rung up, the cashier was also super friendly and personable and got us signed up for their discounts program. We don't come to Renton very often, but this was such a positive and better experience than we've ever had in our area. We'll definitely be back! They really took care of us here! Have tried time and again to give this store a chance. I don't care for their layout, things are not that easy to find, and every time I have come in alone and had to end up asking an employee for assistance, I am met with sighs and treated like I am a "dumb girl" who has no business in a hardware store. I don't care how dumb you think your customers are, or what gender you perceive them to be, they deserve to be treated with respect and not made to feel like they are a burden. Every time I've went to the McLendons Hardware (Renton) Rainier Ave location, The employees have always gone out of their way to be so helpful. First off, the parking lot is always is clean and store front is very appealing/inviting. Walking in and through the store you will notice the amount of time and planning that went in to a perfect layout of an organized merchandise set up. I wanna give my full gratitude to an Employee named "Drew". He is always so genuine and truly goes above and beyond to make each customer feel that they are the biggest priority the moment they walk through the store. Thank You Drew! My truck had problems the other day and they were so understanding of letting me leave it there in the parking lot, and even were a help to get me the proper auto help (even though they are a hardware store! We came in Feb to get some indoor plants. Mclendons only had one small aisle of them. And not many pot options. If you're looking for indoor plants you could swing by here and see what they have to offer, but I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket on finding what you need here. read more

I really love McClendons it's more of a family atmosphere and they had all the pots I needed for my repotting project.

Our kitchen sink has had minor leaks off and on for the last few years, and like many new homeowners with no clue, we practiced the art of duct taping our PVC pipe together. It should be no surprise then, that the minor problems turned into a catastrophe and we found an entire pipe bent and split in addition to some other leaking pipes. After successfully fixing our own toilet with the help of McClendon staff, I decided that perhaps I could take on the kitchen sink. I took some pictures to show the specific areas needing help as well as the pig picture. I bagged the broken pipe and some other small parts and took off to McClendons. Dave was my hero! He looked at my pictures and pipe parts and listened carefully as I explained what the problem was. He walked me straight to the new pipe I needed. He got new washers for me and even opened up the package to show me the correct way to put them back in the pipes. He also got me a new gasket for the garbage disposal for when I put the new pipe back in. You would think I would know what I needed after fixing the toilet, but it really helped that Dave explained that I would be needing new washers and a gasket for this project. When I explained an abnormal issue and what I thought was needed, he didn't tell me I was wrong, but walked me to a different department to find exactly what I was hoping for. He also asked me if I might need a PVC pipe cutter to make sure everything fit correctly. Fortunately I already have one at home, so everything was all good! The saying goes that when you're working on a home project, expect to go to the hardware store two or three times until the project is complete. Lucky for me, I only had to go to McClendons one time. I think it helped that I was prepared with as much information as Dave needed. And Dave was very knowledgeable and knew exactly how he could help! Thanks Dave! read more

I think your employees might be a little confused about what their job entails. This old female employee complained out loud to another employee how it's aggravating that I'm in the same aisle she was stocking shelves in. I found this hilarious for many reasons... -Why not just walk away if you're scared of customers? (Maybe she doesn't know about the 4 D's of dodging customers... Dodge,Dip,Dive, and Dodge). -Why talk shit about random customers while they shop? Is this like one of those funny restaurants you see on the Television where the servers talk shit to you!?! If so, screw you too! ;) -Do you train your employees to be scared of customers? Interesting strategy for sales, this may explain the staggering difference in relevance you have compared to big daddy Depot and sista Lowe's. -What if I need help? Oh I forgot! I successfully bought my bulbs and left, but while I was inside I walked by a few employees there and shimmied down the aisle past them hugging the shelves just in case they too have that similar rude customer service you see on TV. Besides having higher prices than almost any other store, I recently noticed a serious security/privacy issue at this store. While trying on a pair of Carhartt jeans in the dressing room, I looked up to find a SECURITY CAMERA directly above the dressing room!!! NOT COOL. I asked to speak with a manager to report the issue. The MOD, Sherry (sorry if misspelled), informed me those cameras didn't work and she would have them removed. She said the cameras were changed in the last few years and the old ones never came down. Came here to buy some ply wood for my new project at home, I would say the old man in the wood department was very helpful & had great knowledge about the stores items. They even cut the wood if you know the dimensions, I believe it's $0.50 per cut! All the vegetable plants are in the very front & the other plants (flowers, trees etc.) are on the far left of the store! Very convenient for me & easy to find with plenty of parking! Only reason I knocked off a couple stars is because the store was very clustered & the staff in front was not very friendly nor welcoming... The customer service at this location was terrible. The male attendant in the gardening tool department was inept and slow moving. After preaching a condescending speech about needing to change our own weedwacker head he wandered off retuning later after being called by another employee to immediately walk away with a different customer. When I went to get an employee to get us the weedeater we wanted three employees were happy to call someone else but not to get the item for us themselves. The cashier was on the phone during our whole check out process. My husband decided that we work too hard to spend our money somewhere that we are treated so dismissively. So we only bought a $6 metal scoop at that location instead of the $300+ we were going to spend. read more

My go to hardware store. Still privately owned their attitude is to assure customer satisfaction. You talk to real people with real knowledge and real opinions. Their hardware section puts the big box stores to shame. I can buy one specialist screw at a time. The gardening section is only rivaled by full fledged nurseries. I wanted to rate this place higher, but their customer service just brought them down. Hardware: Great resource if you need to find some obscure part. Workers seem knowledgeable about most everything. Garden Center: Plants look unhealthy and tired. Best to go to a nursery if you're serious about your garden and don't have time to nurse one of their plants back to health. Customer Service: Sarcastic (and not in a humorous way). Most times they are condescending. This seems to be a common thread throughout this particular store. If you can look past these attitudes then shop away! McLendons is one of my favorite stores. It reminds me of the really old lumberyards and hardware stores that my dad would take me to when I was little. And for the record, I love all the elderly women who work here. Actually all the employees are really kind hearted. A lot of them are working class folk and they don't have that saccharine sweet politeness that some shoppers expect. I find the customer service at Home Depot and Lowe's absolutely nonexistent so I can't even compare. *** TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE*** We have been a family of McClendon shoppers since I was a child, and tonight my husband had an incredibly terrible experience at the Renton store. My husband, while Christmas shopping, was followed around the store by whom must have been a security type person in charge of looking for shoplifters. It made my husband feel uneasy, but he shrugged it off and proceeded to finish shopping. While at the register paying for all of his items, he hears on the radio the cashier had a description of himself, as well as details about what he was purchasing- etc etc. The overzealous security employee was describing my husband in detail while my husband could hear. He was highly offended, has never stolen a thing in his life, and was checking out at the time. How could something like this happen? I understand the need for security- but McClendons whoever was working tonight crossed a line, making a customer feel uncomfortable and then speaking over the radio in a derogatory manner within earshot of the customer. I don't know what your security bases their judgement of a person on- but my husband was dressed like your average McClendons customer, a working man. We have spent over $700 at your store in the last two weeks, he has purchased 3 of his Stihl chainsaws from you and often goes to you for his companies supplies as well. It bothers me that such a reputable company would allow something like this to happen to a lifelong customer. Again, I understand the need to monitor for theft- but my husband feels completely violated and humiliated. I feel so bad for him. I do hope you are able to share this with management and Loss Prevention staff. How does Home Depot survive? McLendon's is THAT good! They have everything at the store in Renton, from the everyday to the obscure. I think you'd have a really hard time finding a hardware item, nut, bolt, or screw, that they don't stock... and they have plenty of old-school oddballs too. Their spring selection, for example, runs to over 300 springs, and that's just the ones small enough to hold in your hand! The garden section is outstanding and the folks working in that department have a really good knowledge of local conditions and microclimates, their inventory, and how to take care of the plants while they're at the store. These are not your under-watered, ignored cheap annuals... but the prices are actually really quite good. I love that they have a master garderner at the store every Thursday. For free, you can take advantage of their expertise; they examined a troublesome weed from my property (horsetail) and gave me good advice about how to naturally crowd it out and eradicate it over time, with sensitivity to the three springs on the land and the fact that it's just half a mile uphill from Lake Washington. They have a huge range of outdoor furniture, tools, and other fitments for every project you can imagine. Their power tool section makes me drool and I have to stay out of there, even though their prices are really quite good. The restrooms and the store are meticulously clean. The aisles are wide, the carts are in good repair, and it is generally a pleasure to shop there. The staff, as I mentioned, are super-friendly and there's enough of them to find help when you need it. Once I asked a question of a staffer who reminded me of my dad (about 65 and a real handyman) and he was a bit stumped. Apparently, he thought about it the whole time I was in the store, because as I was paying for my other items, I was paged (by description) and then this employee excitedly gave me a solution he'd devised, complete with a drawing. He was right, by the way; his sketch helped me solve a complicated garage-door opener issue. He was so friendly and thoughtful that my McLendon's loyalty is complete... and he remembers me now when he sees me in the store. :-) read more

This store used to be fantastic. They were my go to for over 15 years after my wife and I set up shop in our first little rental home in West Seattle. They had a huge selection of high quality tools and a staff that actually knew what they were doing, they also stood behind their products...which frankly, rarely if EVER did I have an issue with anything they sold. Our favorite thing to buy at McLendon's? Christmas decorations. They had it all. Blow molds, old school ceramic C9 light strands, you name it. Fast forward to today. We now live in Kent, WA. The Kent, WA McLendon's is singly the cruddiest hardware store on the planet. The staff there all hate doing their jobs. They stand around and yammer, deliberately try to ignore doing anything past the most remedial tasks in their jobs and I'm convinced, they hate their customers. My most recent ordeal with this branch concerned 10 sets of 70 count C9 LED Christmas Lights purchased around Christmas of 2021. Within 2 weeks, 6 of the 70 count strands were toast...complete garbage by which exactly 1/2 the strand died all at once. I took 6 of the 10 back and was refunded. A year later (2022), I put up the last 4 sets and all 4 failed the EXACT same way within 2 weeks. I called the Kent McLendons and told them the issue. $120+ on non working lights and asked if they'd been getting calls about this. I was referred to a manager. The manager picked up the phone and refused to identify himself by name. I asked for it 3x so I'd have SOME kind of reference as to whom I'd spoken to but he refused to give it to me. Completely un professional. He then stated there was NO WAY they could help me as the lights were past their 90 day return policy. I again explained the situation and he refused to help me. He also refused to admit they'd had issues with these lights and stated "I have heard nothing." I then went up the food chain and called the Renton store (the main McLendon's hub). I asked to speak to a manager. Once again, and after waiting on hold for 15 minutes, an anonymous person picked up, with no identification as to whom they were or their job title, just a "hello?" I asked if I was speaking to a manager. I got a "yes." I asked for his name, I got a rudely flat "how may I help you" with AGAIN, no identification, no name. I then told him the issue. He asked me for the product ID, I gave it to him and asked if he'd gotten calls on these lights. He said "I don't know, I'd have to get to a terminal." I said, ok, well let me know what you need then. He replied "I can't get to a terminal right now, it's all the way across the store, but just bring them in and we'll see what we can do." That was it? Basically, "I don't feel like walking to a terminal" ?? Once again, consummate professional at work here. So, I brought the 4 bum sets of lights all the way up to Renton with the original packaging and my receipt. It was a 35 minute drive. I was then helped by the rudest customer service rep ever. She told me the lights were past the return window...I again explained the ordeal and that I'd spoken to a supervisor who refused to give me his name and told me to take them in for a return. I again asked to speak to a manager. The woman flatly said, "sir these are outside our return policy, there is nothing we can do." A manager THEN intervened. Not a guy, a gal. She took a look at the lights and re iterated the customer service woman's refusal to accept a return. I walked out empty handed...oh wait, no I was carrying about 20 lbs of dead $120 garbage back to my car. I then called the manufacturer. The manufacturer was responsive and told me that they would reach out to the McLendon's regional buyer concerning the issue. After 2 calls to the manufacturer over 3 weeks time, NOBODY ever followed up with me. No messages, no calls, NOTHING. I then decided to eat the $120, and never do business with this McLendon's ever again. Something awful happened to McLendon's. I don't know what, but they went from my #1 go to, to bottom of the heap, to now, completely blacklisted on account they have 0 accountability, class, respect or even a modicum of integrity related to the garbage they buy and sell to unsuspecting, once loyal consumers.
