OMG. My wife and I went to lunch to try True Food next to Shake Shack which had been highly recommended to us by a friend. The attractive California modern place has an eclectic menu including smoked salmon toast and assorted salads. The place was empty of customers on a Saturday mid-day which should have been a clue as to what to expect. My wife ordered the salmon toast on brown bread with cottage cheese while I ordered a burger with cob corn on the side. The burger came plain with a few cooked onions and greenery. No catsup or mayo was offered. The burger was just warm while the corn was cold. Biting into the burger after receiving the catsup but no mustard (they didn't have any) it tasted chewy with bits of gumminess. I couldn't swallow it. There also was no salt on the sub-par meat. The slighted heated corn cobs needed a good broiler. The management was polite but unpreturbed by my complaints. He comped the $22 burger but when asked to provide catsup or mayo or mustard or better quality meat seemed non-plus. This is not a place i would recommend or return to. read more

True Food Kitchen has the looks and the appeal that makes all the latest food concepts trendy: a farm to table vibe, "health" driven food, open kitchen plans, etc. While several of these attributes are desireable it can go horribly wrong when it is made to scale by corporate intentions. We visited the True Food Kitchen in Menlo Park. We were blown away with its modern facade in the middle of mall area reminding us of visits to eateries in California or Oregon. One caveat to this review is that we were there yesterday on Mother's Day so we expected it to be slammed, which it was, when we first arrived at 2 pm. By the time we left (2 1/2 hours later!) there were open tables all over the place. First red flag here were our cocktails which were so waterdown that I thought I was drinking an orange seltzer although it was supposed to be an aperol spritzer. Surely it was refreshing but for $14 buck? I don't think so. Then we ordered. One of our group ordered the Mother's Day special of Strawabery quinoa pancakes but the waiter said they didn't have anymore (supply issues?). A young diner of ours wanted to have french fried but they didn't have that either. But we were fine, this is there thing. But that's were our ordeal began. We waited an HOUR before we began to wonder where our food was. Remember we're acknowledging that it was very busy in this huge place so we were patiently waiting. At the 1 hour and 15 we knew there something horribly wrong so we alerted our waiter, who should have notice how long we had been waiting; he barely visited our table. He even forgot a request for straws for some of our drinks. After the mention of concern, since this is an open kitchen, we could see the waiter talking to the expediter and then a manager type. The manager then came back to us and apoligized for the order and that part of our meal would be discounted "deeply". One of us asked if they could send out some appetizers to hold us over and the manager said that he wouldn't want to do that as then our food would come out. Fine. Well our food still did not arrive for another 20-25 minutes. We seriously considered going to the Shake Shack right next door for fries. More than ample time for a plate of carrots with hummus, or cauliflower, etc. During this time we obviously saw the pancakes being made in the kitchen. Hmmmmmm By the time the food came it was admittedly delicious. My kale salad was awesome, perfectly cooked with some added tofu glazed in a delicious vinaigrette. I would however steer away from the poke because it's basically a tuna tartare appetizer: it barely made it up the middle of the bowl for $24 dollars. OOOF. Of all the pokes we've eaten before were at least twice the amount served yesterday. In the end we were discounted 35%. Quite honestly with the volume they pull there, they could have comped the whole meal and have me thinking I would definitely try this again and maybe its just a bad day. But that made me realize that they only just care about money and not their customers. So, no I don't think I will be going back. Sad because that kale salad was so yummy. read more

We ate here a week ago choosing this restaurant as a good place to eat with a vegan friend. The ambience was very nice, clean and spread out so you don't feel like you're sitting on top of each other. The hostess and the server were also very nice. A lot of interesting choices though my vegan friend was upset because they ran out of vegan cheese for her vegan burger. two of us split the meatloaf and the turkey meatball sub and they were both delicious. What wasn't delicious is the tiny amount of food. I know food prices have gone up a lot, but they could've thrown a couple more carrots and potatoes on the meatloaf plate at the very least. if someone else was paying I would gladly return, but if I'm paying, I just can't see coming out of a restaurant where I'm still hungry and paying top dollar for it. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant. My friend and I loved the decor and atmosphere. Unfortunately we both thought the food wasn't very good. We both had bowls (Korean and Teriyaki) and they were too salty and over spiced. The dessert choices are few and we tried the squash pie which our waiter described as lighter than pumpkin pie. It was, in color, but it was just as dense as a pumpkin pie and not as tasty. We both agreed we won't go back but I want to because I really really loved the decor. It's very peaceful and we hadn't seen each other in years so they were kind with letting us stay a long while to catch up. It wasn't super crowded though. First time trying this place. We place a take our order. The customer service was great. I heard good things about this place and had high hopes. I order Umami burger, Pesto Pasta and Lasagna Bolognese. If I wanted to get hypertension I would definitely recommend the pesto pasta with a side of extra large water. It was extremely salty. I don't go here often enough, as every time I go, I feel I want to try every last item on the menu, and there are still so many I haven't tried. During our last visit, we started with edamame guacamole, then enjoyed a teriyaki quinoa bowl and a Korean noodle bowl, with fragrant iced green tea to quench our thirst. There's a healthy, energetic vibe in this restaurant that always puts a smile on my face. Although crowded when we go, service is efficient and friendly. I enjoyed my time at True Food Kitchen with my family. We got hummus and the garden scramble to start and it was both very delicious and fresh. I also had their jasmine green tea which was very potent in flavor and smell. For entrees we got salmon, the panini, Korean noodle bowl and one of their burgers. Personally, I did not find the panini or salmon to be the most flavorful of dishes- however, the other ones were quite tasty. We finished off our meal with the cookies and ice cream as well as a spiked mango lassi. Overall, we really liked True Kitchen.
